Top 3 tips to avoid Medigap Buying Mistakes
So, you want a Medigap plan and might be wondering how to get one. If you’re like most people, your money matters and you want it to go as far as it can, so you want don't want to make a bad decision.
Stick with me and I’ll share with you your 3 tips to avoid mistakes when buying a Medigap plan.
Hi, Joann Quinn, co founder of remedigap.com and insurance professional..thanks for being here today.
Let’s get right to it…
The first tip to avoiding Medigap buying mistakes is to
Think twice before pressing the “enroll now” button...that little button can take you two places...and both are not in your favor.
It’s common to want to shop online. After all, we do it with so many things in our lives now and the internet makes it very easy. Case and point...you found me. But, I’m going to show you how to be very, very, careful when shopping for Medigap online.
If you don’t want your phone ringing off the hook, then make sure you avoid doing the following:
AND, if you do end up finding an Enroll Now button that actually allows you to input your information and buy a plan, then you’ve just forfeited any choices that were out there for you. Meaning, you settled for the ONE Plan F, Plan G or Plan N that company offered.
Which brings me to tip #2
Think twice about buying direct with the insurance company
Like I already said, no choices One Plan F, Plan G or Plan N and their price...whether you choose to enroll online or call directly...same end result...no choices. They’re not going to tell you their competitor has a better premium, but gladly sign you up for their Medigap plan and more than likely try to sell you something else.
Which brings me to tip #3
Say no to pushy sales tactics
This is the one that ruffles your feathers the most because I hear what’s happening when I talk to people like you everyday...and it infuriates me...and I’m a pretty even keeled person.
So, here’s some of the latest tactics that I’ve heard:
I recently had a gentlemen call me who originally called the insurance company to get quotes and he was reaching out for your opinion. He told me the agent at the insurance company told him he should make his decision quickly as rates go up in October. Well, I could go on and on about what is completely out of line and wrong with this statement. But, to keep on point...this is a pressure tactic and in fact, rates weren’t going up in October, b/c the insurer had just had a rate adjustment a few months prior, but either the agent didn’t know what she was talking about or she was using the October rate increase as pressure tactic.
Another gentlemen told me he had an agent who called him numerous times and finally said, in so many words, that because she had taken the time to call him and follow up with him that he owed it to her to buy a plan through her...what? She made the whole experience about her...That’s unbelievable...but, he felt the pressure...and her tactic worked...it’s just awful not to mention unethical. I think your blood pressure is rising just talking about this.
Unfortunately, there’s more...one of your clients told me that when he was in the research mode for Medigap plans, that he kept getting a lot of phone calls, but he only wanted to communicate via email; however, he was told that “they” preferred to communicate by phone. Again, making the experience about themselves and not about him and his needs...but, why is the phone so important to many agents...because that’s where they can work the pressure tactics into the conversation...just like in the previous stories.
So it seems like I’ve eliminated any option for buying a Medigap plan. Well, I wouldn’t leave you without a solution.
If you don’t want to push the enroll now button, apply directly with the insurer, or deal with high pressure tactics then you can choose compassion, understanding, and patience...I know that’s seems odd...but, There are plenty of insurance professionals, like myself, who have those qualities...who knows...you could get lucky and find one right in front of you. But the bottom line is you need to be comfortable making decisions about your Medigap benefits and not let an individual or company do it for you.because, after all, it’s your money.
So, If you want more tips on how to avoid Medigap buying mistakes, my contact info is below. And, don’t forget to subscribe to get all videos about Medicare and Medigap & of course press the like button if you enjoyed this video.

Call several independent insurance brokers. They aren’t affiliated with a particular insurance company. First, research several plans you want to receive quotes from these brokers on. Their features and benefits are easy to look up online. All Medigap plans offered through all insurance companies are the same, only the premiums vary. My suggestions would be Plan F (no longer available to those who turned 65 after 2020) so that’s out for most, Plan G, Plan G-HD, and Plan N

Medicare is already insurance. So, you are buying insurance on insurance. The average retiree is hospitalized 4 times over a 20-30 year period. You will never recoup the money you pay in premiums for a supplement policy. Your health would have to be horrendous to even come close to being justifiable financially.
@lynnciavarini1052
@lynnciavarini1052 5 лет назад
What if you are still working and have, no plans to retire at least for a year, and have excellent and very reasonable health insurance with your employer? Is Medicare B enough to cover the co-pays that I pay out of pocket now?
@Remedigap
@Remedigap 5 лет назад
Hi Lynn...if you are still working and your employer has more than 20 employees, then you don't need to add Part B coverage until you're ready to drop employer coverage. And, you won't incur a late enrollment penalty as long as you've continued working and maintaining employer health coverage. However, if you decide to enroll in Medicare while maintaining employer coverage, then Part B pays based on what the group health plan paid/allowed and what the provider charged. In some cases, you may pay whatever costs Medicare or the group plan doesn't cover. If you'd like to discuss your situation further, please feel free to reach out: joann@remedigap.com or 888-411-1329.

Your video is informative. I had determined that I want the original medicare then adding a supplement. I see the attraction for Med.Adv as well, so roughly I have completed the app for Medicare Parts A & B and have no idea which supplement plan is best for me. Here is my profile...I am in good health with no conditions other than being on Atorvastatin for stubborn cholesterol. I am not on any other medication and haven't been for a greater part of my 64 years...no high blood pressure, no diabetes, no heart issues. I exercise, keep my weight in check and get an annual physical, annual eye exam, and teeth cleaning every 6 months. What plan(s), with this information, should I probably consider?
@Remedigap
@Remedigap 5 лет назад
Thank you for reaching out. Since you are applying for Part B, you can use your Medigap Open Enrollment Period to purchase a Medigap Plan without answering health questions. As for drug coverage, a low priced Part D plan will work well for you since you have one low tiered medication. I'm happy to send you information on the Medigap plans available in your area if you like. At your convenience, please feel free to reach out to me via email at joann@remedigap.com or 888-411-1329.

I enjoyed this video and as you mentioned in the video, some people prefer to first communicate to an agent by email. I'm such a person. I went to your web site and did not see that option to ask questions --- only to get quotes. Is this option not available , or did I just miss it? I do not want to ask my questions on this youtube site as they would not be questions for the rest of the world to see.

as a broker myself, a few things i tell customers to look out for when they speak to an agent: 1) ask the agent up front which carriers they represent - if they hem and haw or dance around the question, just hang up on them. an honest broker will tell you up front what products they have to offer. 2) ask them if they sell medigap AND advantage plans both - some agents only offer one or the other. If you're looking for an advantage, or a supplement or aren't sure what you need, this way you know up front the agent's potential biases. and 3) if you plan on still shopping around even after talking to the agent, just let the agent know up front that they shouldn't waste too much of their time and this way they will be brief, to the point and not get all butt hurt at the end of the call when you don't enroll with them.

Thank you for sharing! I have 13 to 25 callers a day. I just got rid of them all from last enrollment period. I have not spoken to anyone besides Medicare rep who is not able to help and I understand why. This is so awful! We all want what is best for our own selves but these people are like pirates wanting for their own selves. So who do you trust? Like most, I do not have all this time to figure these plans out. It sickens me that this is where we are in society not being able to trust anybody for the most part. Always a scam! All about money and greed! What a shame this country is in. Terrible that are agents themselves on here who have to come to You Tube to get educated. Also I take it you get paid too for having people respond to this video. This is how you make your money right? I would call you in a min if I didn't think possibly this was another scam. Also I don't trust the FREE consultation as how many times has this been used? I would really like a Free Consultation and I would pay for a consultation if I could trust that the information was in my favor and not the benefit of these plan people who are a dime a dozen. Its all about trust so the question is Who?

Meet in person with an agent and look them in the eye (If ) they are good they will be able to keep things understandable . If they tell you " you don need a supplement , keep your money in your pocket and get an advantage plan " you will know not to trust them and close (slam)the door behind them . Im an agent and even though i know the big secret ..( medicare advantage pay alot more to agent than medigap ) I always recommend when first eligible ( IF ) you can afford supplement premium grab one with low rate increases .Big Company like UHC is best bet ( If you cant afford medigap premium its medicare advantage plan shopping time Does it imply trust to you that I recommend a plan I know will pay me less ?

Great video. 3:48 How do you know when a company will raise the rates and how do I find this information? Are the rates raised once a year? If I have a Medigap plan, will my rates increase at anniversary date or at the time the company raises the rates? I also saw a comment below about the donut hole. Do you have a video on it? Thanks in advance.
@Remedigap
@Remedigap 4 года назад
Hi there! Most insurance companies raise rates on the anniversary date of your policy. You will receive a letter from the insurance company at least 30 days before your premium changes. If you have an insurance agent that sold you the policy, you can contact him/her to see if there are any upcoming increases slated for your plan. As for the Donut Hole, I don't have a video specific to that topic, but if you have concerns about your situation, feel free to send me an email. joann@remedigap.com

I hope your Medigap agent told you about the problems with hospitals admitting people into 'observation' status as outpatient and thus not qualifying for Medicare's skilled nursing coverage. Medicare requires 3 midnights as inpatient in order to qualify for skilled nursing coverage and due to Obamacare laws, hospitals are being forced to admit less patients into inpatient and more into outpatient observation. Most Medicare Advantage plans waive this requirement of 3 midnights to qualify for skilled nursing coverage whereas Medicare would deny coverage if that requirement is not met meaning you privately pay for your $400 to $500 per day skilled nursing care. There are many small problems with Medicare coverage that Medicare Advantage carriers fix on their own and this 3 midnight rule is one of them.

Why would anyone pay more for a supplemental when the plans are regulated by the Medicare? For instance, I am paying $70.95 a month in Florida for Plan F High Deductible (the HD is $2240). Why pay higher premiums per month when the plans are regulated by Medicare?

Thanks for sharing your experience with Medicare Supplement insurance. For many people, price isn't the only factor when determining coverage. The name of the company, rate increase history, and projected age increases play a part in the decision making. The choice isn't always easy; and, everyone's situation is different. There are people who start Medicare with pre-exisiting conditions and stress about choosing the right plan/company knowing they may be with that plan long term.

In 2008 I purchased United Health Care Med-gap ins. No one explained the donut hole, now 11 years later, I'm in the donut hole I have only Plan A and B from Medicare, and as I'm older my medications have sky rocketed. I cannot afford $741.62 and $475.92 for my meds. I need help. I understand I can apply for plan D in October 2019. How do I get out of the donut hole and what do you recommend, Seniors really get railroaded when we get older.

The Donut Hole can be a challenge. I'm sorry to hear about your situation. The only way to get out of the Donut Hole is for you and the drug manufacturer to meet your required costs. My recommendation is to call your pharmacy or drug plan and ask them how close you are to getting out of the Donut Hole.

Thanks for your feedback. I understand the sound on this video can be an issue on some devices. I apologize for that, but I'll always do my best to provide valuable information.

I want to say as a medigap seller your last point is so wrong. I have conversations everyday with people. Asking them about what is important and to talk about the differences in the medigap policies. You aren't the only one for people to speak with. You can't email a conversation there is no relationship building with that.

Thanks for your feedback. I also speak with people everyday about Medicare. Sometimes, however, email is the first point of contact and more comfortable for people. It allows them to ask questions without feeling pressured to buy...what's wrong with that? By answering questions, we have a conversation via email and a relationship begins to build. It works. You should try it. 💯

Carrie Lonsdale Joann Quinn is right, and thousands of customers will agree with her. Simple questions should be answered by email. Insisting on a telephone call for every little detail does not build a relationship. It only builds frustration. Any honest agent should be prepared to give an answer in writing, by mail or by e-mail, if that’s what the customer wants. It’s a simple matter of customer preference. If that preference is not respected, how can any decent relationship be built?
