Cool tutorial video, much appreciated. Sitting here dead center of the states and not surfing, but I like the idea of moving for a few years just to experience the culture.
Also, as I got better at the turtle roll I found that I could use the force of the wave passing over to help me flip back atop the board. At the tail end of the wave passing over you...start to turn your board and the water moving passed you will flip you with a little more force. You have to get the feel for when to reconnect your chest to the board. If you time it just right it puts you in a good position faster and you can look forward and maybe find a low spot to paddle for or get ready to repeat.
Good tip! And you're very right. When you flip back around you can use the tail end force of the wave to help get you back into paddling position. That faster transition makes a much more efficient paddle out. Instead of trying to climb back on the board after turtling.
Great video I didn’t know about the pop cork! One thing someone taught me about the turtle roll is to push one foot into the back of the board to help get the nose under bigger waves. Aloha 🤙🏽
these are nice for small waves imo. for large sets of white water barreling towards you and a beachbreak, I just ditch the board and dive under. this works well if you have a leash on and there is no one behind you! do not try this if you have people near behind you...
There is actually some incorrect advice here. I regularly surf longboards in overhead waves. No problem. Been surfing for over 40 years though and i am very very fit. Angling and knifing the rail sideways into the wave reduces the force on the board and is easily a much better method which i learnt from my decades of experience.
Omg this is very helpfull for me. Ussualy i always jump off from the board when the waves is coming, and then make me tired quickly 🙇. Thank you surfcoaches. Hope this summer i can go for surfing better..
I used to pop up ok but I’m coming back from an injury (double trimaleolar ankle breaks skydiving), and I’m going to try and longboard to help me rehab back into surfing gradually, so as an old surfer and first time Longboarder this was very helpful thank you 😊🙏🏻
That funny thing you mentioned at the end of video actually happened to me. Was turte-rolling, got pushed and flipped vertically while still holding the board. Suddenly I was facing the shore on my board..so I popped up and rode it 🤣🤣 Fascinating!!!
I've always done what I call the duck dive, and this is at The North Shore Oahu always worked for Me. But I've never been on a longboard so maybe it's different.
That's okay for getting through small waves, but when you get a barrage of larger waves, it's a bit more difficult. Any tips for that? Only thing I can figure out is wait it out or go way around, which takes time. I'll practice the turtle roll more, I guess. WATCH FOR REEFS WHEN YOU DO TURTLE ROLL!
+Darth Figpucker Try looking for channels/rip currents, they'll help you get out back without dealing with the impact zone or wait for a set to finish then start paddling in deeper quickly so you don't need to spend a third of your session duck diving and restoring.
Sit up and straddle your board and turn around to face the beach by circling your feet like an egg beater, putting your back to the wave. Slide back a little still sitting to act like an anchor and hold the rails. Let the wave go by, turn around and keep going. Or, with a leash and if you are not near anyone, get off the board and dive under the wave and feel that cool tug when the wave pulls your board.
@@judyliciuos1 Yup, Im ass at surfing so far so I just dive under the wave, holding the nose of my board behind me with one hand, and if the wave is really strong I let the board go. Helps ease off a bit of the tension and if its not too strong of a wave I still have my board at the ready once Im thru the wave!
TheValeAcunna TVA you won't feel the the wave and i think if the wave was going to break on you you just go down and let the surf boerd go than pull it from that think on you foot
I just started learning how to surf ( getting on it and riding it on a small wave ) I surf in California does anyone know the best spots for a beginner 😁
the pop looks like it needs lots practice deep and wide legs in turtle roll is worth a try. sometimes i like to punch through the waves and if the white water is big but not big enough i hold tight lay side of head on the board and it feels like a pop but i lay on board because if it has more power than i anticipated it doent smash my face the pressure over the board feels lower and after the pop im like vertical and seems like a drag vs backward push i saw another method.... you spin to have back to wave board as vertical and deep as possible i done this a couple times when i misjudged the break and pow brake right on my head i ditch board but they say keep the board.....
+Jonathan S Depends on the size of the wave, Turtle roll is the best of the 3 for waves right in front of you, but a good size wave on top is bad for all 3 methods.
+Surf Coaches if it is a bigger wave breaking right on top of you, i suggest just aborting the board and swimming down under. u should make sure that their arent any people in the water behind you before u use this method as ur surfboard could hit them
Sometimes on big waves I hug the front of the board and dive under the wave with the board under my arm. I’m off the board but still holding onto it. Is this bad technique?
A life long surfer/ surf shop owner in San Diego told me to do it this way instead of turtle rolling. He said to keep the board close to you with your arm and and turn yourself sideways. Maybe it’s an old school way? I need to try both and compare.
How about shore break or for almost breaking wave, can I do turtle roll on it? cos I realised the wave just flip my board out of my hand most of the time. I find turtle roll only works for white water(breaking wave)
Sharks are just like puppies, they will make them selves present, if you leave them alone they won't bother you, but they can nibble if you entice them.
like all the other comments said, just paddle over unbroken waves. When there is no white water there is nothing to push u. If the wave breaks as you are at the top of it, a lot of the time your board will punch through and u will make it over.
if your using a longboard turtle roll coz it'll break on the board and will be fine though a lot of the time if you paddle hard enough you should be able to get over it. don't duck dive if its a big board coz it will b e near impossible to get under
@@rebeccawint_ ...i regularly surf my longboard in overhead surf and there is a method to use which works. It takes timing and skill though. Learners struggle duck diving anything in even small surf.
I'm still working on the turtle roll. My friend saved me on bigger white wash by having me sit on the tail and face the shore and the wave passes me. I'm so weak and the turtle scares me ha ha
Place your weight through feet on side of the board that you want the board to turn to. Practice on land on a skateboard if you dont understand this basic idea.
that waves are not 4'-6' or more if you tried a duck dive then you would snap the board you have to slice the wave with a longboard at 80 degrees turn it 90 degrees take it with you holding the rails then slip back on doing escomo rolls in shallow waves no use in large waves with a longboard they can easily do 10 foot waves
I think it's a regional thing. In Southern California everyone says turtle roll and even turns it into a verb: " Do you know how to turtle your board?"
'Turtle roll'? RU SERIOUS? That's a good way to get your face smashed by your board and will NOT get you outside. NO ONE who has a clue 'turtle rolls'. No one.
