The problem with Starfield is the things NPCs asks you to do would only make sense in a medieval setting. Those "talk to [person]" quests where you travel to another planet, talk to [person], then travel back to the 1st planet, would only make sense in a future where phones somehow don't exist.
Having to run across an open barren planet to find an NPC that could have found their way back on their own and for some reason has zero way to communicate with their crew... its bad
The problem with the game is it’s dogshit dude. It’s a Bethesda game. They are trash. New Vegas is the only good Bethesda game and it isn’t made by Bethesda.
as someone who put over 200 hours into starfield and went through the unity all 10 times i can tell you safely that starfield is the shittiest game i’ve ever played
I feel the System Shock remake doesnt get enough praise for how faithful it is yet brings a new experience with a newer engine and great care to detail. One of my favorite immersive sims ever
The original System Shock is awful, and the remake is X2 awful, that's the kind of games without fanbase gamer community does not give F#&K about those old games.
So sad not seeing The Talos Principle II on many of these lists. (It's a great list though, I'm just sad that Talos II doesn't get the recognition it deserves).
i didnt expect robocop to be so much fun, moving around slowly ( since you're robocop) i was kinda worried about it, but the game plays very well, the graphics are great, the recreation of police station is great, and the way they captured the chaos and anarchy in the city is insanely well done, overall a very solid game worth being on the list, im glad you guys agree too !
@EmKayBass spoken like a trully nuts of a person. Anything to justify spending 60+ dollars ona garbage game with 10 year old outdated grtaphics, mechanics and gameplay filled with tons of bugs. Bethesda fanboys are far worse than even sports gamers lmao
@EmKayBass Cyberpunk opinions changed way before the DLC dropped. I've also been playing games for over 30 years, and Starfield was not good. It was not bad, but it wasn't good. Based on Bethesda's track record (minus Fallout 76), Starfield is a big miss. Also, jumping the the conclusion that I haven't played the game and am regurgitating hot takes from RU-vid is just lazy. You're gonna need to come to terms with the fact that Starfield isn't a good game in many people's eyes. Having done basically all the content in the game, it makes me wonder if you've actually played another game besides FO76.
@EmKayBass I've played it for over like 250 hours or something, but it's just not "amazing". Though I agree that it's not as terrible as people force it out to be. It's such whiny gamer drama, similar crap happened with "TLoU2" (for different reasons and in a different way, as well as it being a much more solid product). But gamers just like to create drama by exaggerating everything. They can go cry some more.
Bg3 is a generational game that will be talked about for years for me. I put it with chrono trigger, kotor, and witcher 3 in terms of how a game can change how certain types of role-playing will be done in the future. It's amazing an one of the best games ever made.
maybe if they didnt sell out to epic games for a 1 year exclusive, it would get more downloads. cant wait to try this out for next to nothing when it finally decides to get over itself.
@@themadakh3229you can't have been playing all the fantastic games then, there's no other explanation I can think of. Of course there's bad games, every year will have them, but there's been a metric tonne of great games this year. I play a lot of games and it's been incredibly difficult to keep up with all the worthwhile games that have been released.
No one will probably see this, but as far as I know and have researched, cocoon is NOT made by Playdead, the developers of inside and Limbo, but is developed by a new studio and published by Annapurna Interactive, the same company who’s published Outer Wilds, Stray, What remains of Edith Finch, 12 minutes etc. This isn’t really important but I just thought I should put this out there.
A nice mention for Dead Island 2 is that the gore system is one of a kind. Not sure if the system they use is only within their engine but its just really great.
Starfield was so boring. The settlements or bases, whatever theyre called on the planets are pointless, the planets are empty also. The main story bugged out and i uninstalled after 20 hours of misery
Guys please try Laika: Aged through Blood. It's a bullet time, biking based shooter that has some insane art, amazing melancholic music and a touching story It's an indie game and could be done in a few hours. Please don't miss it and more people need to hear about the game.
Absolutely agree! Such good atmosphere and fun dialogue. I just wish they titled the game differently, personally - I wonder if it would have helped it.
This game is hella damn good! Though I do sadly agree that not all people may have the tolerance to handle it through & through (its whole gameplay mechanics). Iron Pineapple did a good review of this game with the same sentiment as well.
In regards to Starfield, idk how people can just ignore the game lacks computer hacking, real NPC inventories, scrapping, weapon components, real maps, clothing like glasses, you can’t loot a single desk in the game, there’s no in game radio, meaningful reasons for posts(it’s cheaper to just buy resources from vendors than manufacture them yourself), no way to explore, meaningful dialogue (all npc encounters are a pass fail, it literally doesn’t matter what you do to get there), meaningful leveling progression (just unlocking things you could do by default in previous games doesn’t feel progressive, it feels hindering) It's a bad game that has less than what we've previously seen in Bethesda games. It feels cheap and lifeless, and the NPC's feel like they're just computer prompts being activated when you talk to them
I see that the best was saved for last. Barotrauma is an absolute gem of a game, that never fails to entertain me. With friends it is one of the most hilarious and fun videogame experiences.
If Hogwarts Blood Libel makes it on there next to the Diablo 4 and Starfield shitshow, there's absolutely room for Talos 2. And so many better games, for that matter. @@JupiterxBlues
Diablo 4 didn’t get hate when it first came out. In fact it was great. But Blizzard went ahead and ruined it. Idk how they do it over and over again. I used to enjoy Overwatch and look at that game now.
Falcon I think you like Starfield more than some because you enjoy the gameplay and visual aspects of a game more than the lore, storyline and characters so you're having a much better time playing the game comparing to its haters (like myself). 🙂
Dave the Diver was one of the few single player games in years i actually stayed up late playing. Despite having all the characteristics of grindy games I don't like yet because of it's charm and the way it's broken up and each activity supports others. The timing of how it introduces everything is just excellent. The boss fights were way too easy, stupid easy but other than that if you want a change of pace i'd recommend Dave the Diver even if you generally are turned off by singleplayer games.
I love horror games so much, and they typically don’t scare me. I had to stop playing Amnesia The Bunker in less than 45 minutes, I had never been so scared in a game.
"It's a besthesda game..." should not be allowed to be used for an excuse. It should be held to high standards of other games, and not given a pass on It's shortcomings because it's developers are subpar.
I love that you put Hogwart's Legacy on your list. Every other site pretends that game didn't even release and it was clearly one of the best games this year. Good for you guys.
People jumped on that “I hate Diablo IV” bandwagon with the same intensity that people jumped on that “I hate Avatar” bandwagon. But that’s just people for you. People are weird.
I'll keep saying it over and over the only reason starfield got hate was because it did not come out on Playstation. They have been the most vocal about it and i find it strange that the gaming community ignored issues cause it was Bethesda but as soon as it wasnt on Playstation the bugs/content were no longer able to be ignored 😂
I played Expeditions Rome and Suzerain last year and they were both beyond great. Really suggests anyone who likes historical settings and love having multiple endings. I honestly find few games mentioned in @gameranx that are like that, following you guys for around a year now
#1 most Major change with the DeadSpace Remake that people who didn't play the original DIDN'T know, and the #1 reason this is such a major change to the game, is that Isaac Clarke... DIDN'T HAVE A VOICE in the original! He was the mute protagonist! They had to not only bring in the original Voice Actor from DeadSpace 2 and 3 to do lines, but all of the other characters had to have their dialogs rehashed to respond to a now NON-silent protagonist. What they did to make this game, other than what Falcon mentions - the continuous, single ship experience - along with upgraded sound, upgraded graphics, certain elements were changed. Like the Hunter fight... that thing kept popping up hunting you in room after room after room, and you had to TRAP it in an engine test room and flame the sucker instead of just get your timing right on a console. I'd go so far as to say the original game was harder! Then they added collectables and side stories and... this is just generally an AWESOME remake, and I hope they give the same business to DeadSpace 2, which in my opinion was superior to the original Deadspace 1.
Wow, it's not on this list because it's generally considered to be 'meh' and not very good, I don't know why your opinion is so opposite to the majority, but yeah now you know
@@willbearheart7919 They do not. Being a turn based game is the primary reason why so many didn't agree with one of the greatest RPGs of all time winning game of the year
The reason Starfield is disliked so heavily by the fans isn't because we're being unfair or because we just want to hate BGS. It's disliked because the writing is utterly lazy, without question the worst writing in any bethesda game bar none. The gunplay feels somehow worse than fallout 4, the world is utterly vapid and devoid of any interesting content to explore, and to top it off the devs responding with braindead takes about how the first astronauts on the moon weren't bored when they weren't playing a damn video game. The engine isn't even in like the top 10 list of biggest problems with the game yet somehow people continue to default to that because they didn't actually put the time in to see what people are saying or play the game themselves. Kind of an L take honestly love you Falcon but you're off with the take here.
I agree with your take on the writing. Holy crap. Vapid is exactly the verbiage I’ve used to describe it and some other “epic” games released this year.
So, Alan Wake 2, huh? Guess I found the perfect time to finally start playing Alan Wake one. The game's been sitting in my Steam library for over 5 years and I finally got around to giving it a go.
@@bensandquist6185 Certainly did enjoy it. As much as one can enjoy a dark horrorgame, but yeah. Just finished the main game, and just for the heck of it gonna watch a video of all the cutscenes from the remastered version now. ...bit annoyed that's only on Epic, but yeah, nothing new on that front.
My favorite game this year had easily been bomb rush cyberfunk. I loved jet set radio future when I first played it on the og Xbox, so it's spiritual successor has been so great.
I wanted to like it bc I liked jet set radio back in the day but it just isn't as good as jet set for me, and it seems a good amount of people agreed. People who are bigger fans of jet set might enjoy it more tho.
Great video. But I often wonder, how do you manage to play through so many games? How many games do you typically beat per year, and how many hours per week does that translate to?
Shame that no room at the Inn for Lords of the Fallen....i'm only 30 hours in and its excellent...great homage to FromSoft games like Dark Souls. Throw in a few unique mechanics like the umbral realm and a few patches later from a dedicated dev team who add new quests, fixes, spells etc.....truly epic game.
Yea. Weird that they take games like Starfield - not bad but bland - and Avatar - oh look, yet ANOTHER Ubisoft-sandbox - over Aliens Dark Descent. I mean yes, the last mission is bad and the story fails to explain the central plot element to any decent degree, but other than that, the game is solid.
With regards to Starfield, you'll often hear people say "It's a Bethesda game!" toned as both an excuse and as an explanation for the weird design choices and the game's overall presentation. I don't think that such a statement should absolve the developers for anything. The game was only 75% completed. I make that statement after having played it a considerable amount but the game needed flesh out the universe FAR more. It's a mile-wide, inch-deep kind of approach. There's generic space pirates, generic space marines, generic space cowboys, and generic space bandits, and generic space explorers. The "substance" of all of their work is mostly participated in through a kiosk. It's a boring and repetitive gameplay loop that I believe they implemented in order to not distract the player from the overarching goal of completing the game and entering it's New Game Plus system. Those factions needed to be much bigger, in my opinion. Constellation itself needed to be much bigger as well. The ship builder was the most robust part of it and nothing felt worse than building an amazing ship and then having nothing but repetitive and boring tasks to use it for.
Lies of p is hands down one of the best games i have ever played. The graphics, combat, so well optimized, the beautiful music and well crafted levels, dark but beautiful athmosphere. Love it. 4.5/5
Baldur's Gate 3 ain't a AAA game. Its a previously indie studio upscaling and trying to make a AAA game. If BG3 failed, Larian would've barely survived. BG3 is also such a massive effort because it was in early access for years prior to release. Keep in mind their previous release DOS, which eventually went on to become a bit hit years into release, was initially crowd funded.
@@Sealreth I think they are because they say the place they are xd if it wasnt in an order they would not use any numbers or would count up instead of down
@@Sealreth they are though, For number 3 he said that while its his personal number 1, there are two more games that made a bigger splash. that only makes sense if he is ranking them in terms of how big they were.
Bums me out to see Against the Storm not mentioned in hardly any of the conversations about PC games. It's currently Overwhelmingly Positive on Steam with 18k+ reviews, I'd love to see it be in more conversations. Wonderful gem of a dark fantasy, rogue-like city builder. The 30 games listed are great, but hot damn if Against the Storm doesn't deserve to be in lists like these.
He mentioned a lot of mid games and excluded some way better games. When u look at review scores for many of the games on the list, there's a fair amount of games like Against the Storm that he never mentioned, while mentioning games like the 75ish Robocop or 71ish Avatar instead. My guess is he's not into city builders and some other genres of games, so he just left them out or maybe never even thought about them, instead adding some mid games to the list. Ready or Not, Slay the Princess, Ugly, HiFi Rush, Vernal Edge, Gravity Circuit, Blood West, Jusant, Turbo Overkill; all these games also scored higher than tons of the games on this list and they're all excluded for more mediocre titles
Probably because that's what it is, a city builder. When your competition consists of huge first person shoots and rpgs, a 30 dollar clash of clans reproduction isn't gonna cut it.
BOMB RUSH CYBERFUNK was dopydopedopestuff. Really glad it is mentionned in the game of the year 2023 video. It can't be everywhere, small vibe game. But hellavibe
@@Bust_A_Nut_bar maybe but brc maybe a beautiful synthesis of the previous 2 games with a killer soundtrack (and a so-so combat) to me its part of the franchise as it will most certainly inform jsr3's directions
Sad to see D4 and Starfield on here but not Rogue Trader. D4 wasn't up to par with free games developed 5 years ago, and Starfield while it did have some gems in there, for the most part was empty, lifeless and joyless. Phantom Liberty for me at least was amazing start to finish, Starfield was forgotten until this video.
As a person who couldn't tell Hermione from hemorrhoids in Harry Potter, thanks for remembering my GOTY Hogwarts Legacty. Amazing game that got lost in the GOTY discussions unfairly, imo.
not only does this list include diablo 4, it's also a "top" list and diablo 4 is actually above things I guess you guys really love the barb whirldwind animation
Hogwarts Legacy is my top game of the year. Been waiting for this kind of game since I was a kid reading the books for the first time. The world is so detailed, the combat is fun, map is huge and you have the room of requirements as a nice bonus. I can see myself playing this game over and over before the next installment comes out. Finger crossed for expansions/new content.
I have no issues with Starfield being ON the list. I just think it should be lower-tier, considering the amount of caveats it automatically brings with it. I enjoyed playing it, on a number of levels. But I also had plenty of negative things to say about it, not the least of which is that when I finished an initial playthrough and about half of a NG+ playthrough...I was just bored. It's aggressively mediocre, and especially forgettable, in comparison to every other game on this list that I've personally played. To sidestep a bit...I feel the EXACT same way about Hogwart's Legacy, in pretty much every respect. Neither of those games is going in my top 10, or maybe even top 20, of the year. That said...Baldur's Gate as #1 is definitely an easy and accurate choice. Larian outdid themselves, and I can't say enough good about this title...it's 99% perfect.
I think it's just boring...and forgettable, you feel like your having fun playing, but when your done your kinda...why was I playing this. Kept hoping there be more to it.
"At #14 is Dad Island 2..." Now I kind of want to know what Dad Island would be like. Buncha zombies in white sneakers and cargo socks staring at lawnmowers before they attack you?
Alan Wake 2 is my game of the year by far, what Remedy have created is just beautifully crafted from the links to the first game and Control and how everything relates to Finnish folklore it just gets better the more you look into it. Lets face it the Herald of Darkness mission is the best level of any game released in the last year :D
Starfield and Diablo 4, while having merits in fundamental areas in gameplay and art, both deserve the pushback, and I disagree that deciding not to support such products and bad business practices amounts to nothing. The problem is that there's a lot of people that think exactly the way you appear to do so, Falcon. I love this channel, but this is a part I genuinely disagree with. Also, as an Alan Wake fan and a longtime Remedy fan, Alan Wake II absolutely disappointed me with how little actual gameplay it offers. Horrible pacing. Oh, and let's not forget... Sweet Baby Inc.
Hearing them say what amounts to 'just play the games even though you don't agree with the companies' just makes me wish Totalbiscuit was still around. Video game youtube desperately needs someone as pro-consumer as John was.
The mortal Kombat story is amazing and this one is no exception imo. its actually insane, the year the games take place seem weird because you have modern shit mixed with ancient tradition due to the Tournament. its not that bad. its actually the modern earth but you have an ancient monk society that knows about the tournament so they keep traditions and keep training to defeat outworld in, Mortal Kombat!
Aliens: Dark Descent deserves at least a mention. It´s one of the most inovative strategies in years. I will just tell myself, that Falcon purposely forgot that, because as a bird is scared of tight corridors.
