Hey there! Hope all is well, you and I chatted on a previous video. I have a question that’s been stumping me and I hoped that you could help. When it comes to those first certifications and getting your first job, do you recommend this route as you discuss in video more than getting the more well known entry level certs? Sec+ for example. I think it’s well known that the classic big dogs of the certifications are always the Kings and we want to work towards them at some point in our career but I agree that it is important to not obsess over them. Just get working and get your hands dirty. 🍻.
@UnixGuy
@UnixGuy Год назад
the ones that I recommend will give you SKILLS that u can put on the CV that companies are looking for. If you have the word ‘Splunk’ in your CV for example and can prove u know how to work with Splunk that will make u more attractive to a company that uses Splunk than a Security+

@Unixguy : How many times in your career has the technology, coding, and needed knowledge changed? I'm getting into cyber security as an Army veteran and I hear a lot about knowing this or that, and college degrees, but at my age I have seen computers go from Floppy tech to Zip Drives to Cloud computing. How useful is a college degree or specificity with certain programs in the long term? Serious question.
@UnixGuy
@UnixGuy День назад
yes it changed a lot. i worked on mainframes and unix servers and things changed and evolves but the fundamentals remain the same college can be a box to be ticked for some companies although that’s changing as an army veteran if you can get a fancy degree paid for from a top university then go for it, otherwise just follow this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rz0RL4Xue-A.htmlsi=hNgf_aE-G87DB70C

@@UnixGuy thank you. I working on getting a generic degree since i have 72+ hours of various college credits, just to put one on the wall and then transfer into a program somewhere. I'm waiting to find a school that will mix software development path with computer engineering path, like a dual major. I feel that would be better than specializing in one or the other only. Seeing where computers went after the big AOL/Internet break I think that the CPU integration into every day life won't go away willingly. I consider computers as a type of symbiotic organism for our modern human species, from the way I see it developing.

Hey UnixGuy! I've been a big fan of your channel which is super helpful for me! Thank you so much for creating awesome pieces of videos on cybersecurity and helping people break into the space! By the way, I have a question, a bit outside this very topic though. I am currently working on achieving those certs that you recommend in my job hunting endeavor on remote cybersecurity roles. I'm from South Korea, but I always wanted to work remotely for some companies outside my home country. Do you think it is a legit hope to keep going? I used to belong to web development before, more than cyber security. And transitioning into cyber security is my current venture that I wish to achieve.. Do you think my attempt to break into cyber security and work remotely (as a south korean) for a company from other country will work out for me? I would really appreciate your advise and insight❤❤
@UnixGuy
@UnixGuy Год назад
hey mate, so happy the videos are helping you! remote work is definitely possible but it depends more on the company rather than the role. Your best bet is to find a local company that has clients overseas (for example work for IBM in south korea and if they have clienta outside, you can transition this way..). It’s not easy so you need to apply to jobs every day…. it’s not a usual arrangement but its not impossible
@geniusmind7777
@geniusmind7777 Год назад
@@UnixGuy Thank you so much for your advise!! That perfectly makes sense that I need to try local companies with internarional clients! This might be a silly question, but just as a novice, so is outsourcing common in cybersecurity? I might be wrong about this question, but it sounded like to me an outsourced cybersecurity agency or sort of it that works on clients (domestic/international clients etc). I just wasn't familiar with how businesses in cybersecurity works, but it just sounds like software development agencies working on client jobs. Does cybersecurity work the same/similar as the programming industry? Sorry for my novice question!!!
@UnixGuy

yes it is common but less than IT. Either way, it shouldn’t matter to you as much because you can always work for a service provider

With all this said, should we forget Comp TIA security +, and take these more practical exams? Or could one maybe use the materials for similar certs for foundations, then move to these? Could use a mentor, or anyone that is willing to lend advice to an aspiring sec. Analyst. (nobody to do it for me, but direction for some sort of roadmap or path) To prevent going sideways. I started building a lot of projects with python, mostly things I find useful for automation, to get some scripting skills for later on. Have taken some E Learn security courses, passed a Qualy's vulnerability management detection and Response course, and really not sure where to go from here. Only actual cert I have currentl,y is A+ (Which we all know does nothing but help with fundamentals of IT) Thanks!! :)

I was even thinking about staying where I am now as I currently work as information security analyst, stay on the blue team for a couple more years and then move to red team. Take some TCM or INE certs, then OSCP. Pentesting is what I always wanted, but I understand I need to get some solid experience in the field first since I was able to break into it. That should help me pivot smoother. [edit] also… take some time to improve the knowledge I got so far. Fill some knowledge gaps that I may have.
