Thanks Paul. I have been playing trombone since 5th grade and I’m only in 8th right now. I have improved a lot over this year from watching you videos and tips. I find your vids really informative and helpful. I realize I need to hydrate a lot more now because I am never hydrated while I play and I always wondered why I never did well when I’m thirsty or dehydrated.
Did you know anxiety can cause a dry mouth , many yrs ago I was telling a musician friend and he suggested Opral fruits the advert for them always finished with made to make your mouth water. Keep blowing its worth it you are able to play today that took lots of practise and so it goes on , better and better in standard 👍
Thank you Paul! I am a freshman in high school currently and I have my All-Region audition this Saturday (2 days) so this helps so much! I am currently first chair but it could go either way!
Hi paul. I've been playing trombone since june. I've turned to your videos for beginning tips. I've already played in a concert. Thanks for saying the things us trombonist need to avoid. enjoy the rest of your day
I've been playing bone for years and I've literally started carrying a half gallon jug of water everywhere I go for the past 3 years. I definitely noticed a huge difference in my playing when I started hydrating.
This is really helpful, i recently had a traumatic experience and dont want tl experience it again this is not in reference to trombone playing but something that i had to go to er for and i dont want to have this happen again u have been a huuuuge help and inspiration definitely top 10 inspirations i am getting my MD in physical therapy and 2 yr in music
I would be interested in a video on the following topic. For a composer (not a trombone player) writing for the trombone, what are some smart things to do, and what are some stupid things to do?
This is just a slightly annoying thing I find in a lot of trombone pieces that my band director has pointed out as stupid. Whenever you guys write in alternate slide positions rather than the normal ones that are more difficult than the original positions or are frankly not necessary. I always hear him telling me to just ignore them and that it’ll sound better without them lol
Earlier this year, I saw Chicago in concert. Jimmy Pankow, their trombone player, had plenty of water. Jimmy has been playing the trombone since the 1950s when America liked Ike and loved Lucy.
Please help me, this is my second year playing and my tone is terrible, I’ve checked my mouth shape and air usage, my trombone doesn’t have any leaks, I’ve have braces, could that be causing it??? I just can’t hit any high notes without sounding fuzzy and airy. Please help
Ohhhhh thank you so much so your saying we shouldn’t do this we have to avoiddd thank you you’re a great teacher 👍 😂 jk thank you for the advice great help
How about over practice? Back when I was in grade school, none of the teachers ever told me trombone is NOT an instrument that one could practice 6 hours per day. That's what I did. What's painful is, my reward for all that time and dedication was my playing just got worse and worse. By the twelfth grade I would have to "warm up" for about 3 hours before my lips would break down enough to buzz. During those years I thought the solution was just more practice. My band director wanted me to showcase in a concert in my senior year, but I had to turn it down. I think he admired how hard I tried, but didn't realize my predicament. I just had no confidence in my playing. Now, decades later, with the benefit of the internet, I've read the condition I had is called "leather lips", but more formally it's some form of "embouchure collapse". It's funny because it was not so much collapse as solidification! I think Miles Davis encountered this as well, near the end of his career, if you listen to some of his interviews. In retrospect, if I wanted to practice that much, I should have concentrated more on the piano.
That has happened to me when I did some Honour Band, everyday, 6 hours of playing, 3 in a row, another 3 in between hours. For three weeks straight lol. Got super better with technique however at the last week my chops where very solidified howerv for a week of no playing just buzzing it reset
