Film noir, noted for its dark visual style, takes place primarily, but not exclusively, within the generic complex of the American crime film of the forties and fifties. The term was first introduced by French cineaste Nino Frank in 1946. Here is a selection of some of the best film noir released in the year 1949. Total ratings for the 40 films = 270.2 (out of 400) an average of 6.75 out of 10.
Three books were useful when selecting films for this video series - "Dark City - Film Noir" by Spencer Selby, "Film Noir Guide" by Michael F. Keaney, and "Film Noir - An Encyclopedic Reference to the American Style" by Alain Silver and Elizabeth Ward.
Ratings Average sources include IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes, Radio Times, FilmAffinity, Letterboxd, TMDB, Videohound, Maltin's Movie Guide and Halliwell's Film Guide.

Someone has been hard at work assembling a terrific list of 1949 noirs, including three of the all-time greats at the top. Plus “Champion” and “The Set Up” and “Too Late for Tears”. More great directors, including surprises like Fred Zinnemann. A new category, Commie-noir, makes perfect sense. The USSR’s first A-Bomb test was in 1949, shocking everyone, and the Second Red Scare was off and running. Joan Bennett appears but alas her hair stylist let her down. Lizabeth Scott is now the hair style leader. No dumb women’s hats at all it seems in noir. Finally. Lots of good films, a solid repertoire of noir actors, what’s not to like?

Hi Walter, that's 200 film noirs ranked and rated for the 1940s, many of them all time classics. Let's see how the 1950s compare. I'll have to include 'color noir' for the first time. Thanks for commenting on these videos, much appreciated.

@@Top10Charts3978 If the 1950s had only one noir - Sunset Boulevard - that would be enough. But I’m sure you will find many other worthy candidates. Mickey Spillane is coming into focus now.

IMO White Heat is one of the 6 greatest ever noirs. I did not think The Third Man was that all that great and wrote about it on a film noir site.....Boy did i get it from all sides. I should have worn a flak jacket....lol

I like you define Caught as a soap opera noir. I love Max Ophuls films, but his two noir genre flickers I find mediocre. I appreciate Champion. Kirk Douglas is incredible (pun intended) when is given to play purposeful characters.

I've seen Champion a couple of times but never saw the other boxing noir that year 'The Set-Up' which was rated a bit higher. Question is, Rocky aside, why are boxing films so downbeat? Thanks for posting.

@@Top10Charts3978 Boxing is a formalized fight and fight symbolize life and when you die, you lose that fight. The famous Hemingway "Double dicho", most vividly presented in: "The old man and the sea", could apply smoothly in the boxing arena: "Man can be destroyed but not defeated. Man can be defeated but not destroyed". Probably the creators of these boxing movies are influenced by Hemingway, nevertheless "The old man and the sea" was written later, this "Double dicho" is essential for most of Hemingways' prose. But most likely the authors of these films found suitable to show a boxer falling out of grace as a metaphor for their pessimism.
