I've watched a lot of different side chaining videos and I've never fully understood what it was doing. The way you explained it in the first five minutes taught me more than I ever knew.
Worth mentioning where in the chain you put these ducking compressors too (usually last) so beginners don’t get confused that you might have other compressors earlier in the chain to do other things, and this is a final mix ‘vibe’ process that comes later
This is an amazing tutorial... It is extremely important stuff... Ans that c6 compressor is a complex plugin. I had this plug in but didn't use the sidechaining to that extent... This is great. Thank you.
Tip for Logic users, you can see all notes in milliseconds (synced in tempo of your project) by clicking on "Delay" in region inspector on the left side, click the arrow "More" if not visible. I can also recommend one more sidechain trick... multiband in an expander mode on drum room, sidechain snare into it. Set the multiband to the range you like (maybe you want more boomines or more high end splash) and everytime snare hits you get more room just on snare hits.
I paid a couple bucks for an app called ‘BPM to MS’ for figuring out the same thing. I have it on iPhone so I’m not sure if it’s also available on Android. That cheat sheet is a great idea for those who want a free version. Thanks, Bobby!
Hello Raytown production your channel is very helpful because I know a friend of mine who has learnt mixing and mastering tips from your channel and has released his first music album named Symbol Beats
great content, highlighting a variety of ways to create sonic relationships between tracks using sidechaining. to a degree this was validating some of my long-time practices that I haven’t seen anywhere else until now in this video. what I may add as another interesting technique to experiment with - try feeding lead vocals as sidechain source to the mid image of the instrumental bus’s dynamic eq, that is set to attenuate the range ~2k-3k (the exact placement mainly depends on vocals’ characteristics). works great for getting some additional clarity, also widen things a little bit due to unmasking of the side image, caused by attenuation of this range in the mid. also I can’t agree more on the point of syncing every value of attack/release to the tempo of the song - the moment I started doing this was actually when I started to get the most impressive results from my mixes, i seriously think that it’s some inevitably crucial stuff to get everything in place in every possible circumstances, regardless of the source material you’re working with. don’t forget to also pay attention to the values that are not straight (1/4, 1/8, etc..) but also the dotted ones as well as triplets for the current song’s tempo. often one of those is able to add some insane sense of breathing and movement to the finished mix.
Thanks so much Bobby, this is really helpful advice your sharing in your video, and its very much appreciated as well as its easy to understand and follow what your explaining. It makes all the difference like you say, night and day, awesome. Happy holidays to you and all 😊
Good video 👍. Does Fabfilter MB have the same curve like the 2 sections in C6? Regarding compression/side chaining the vocal and fx would you place a compressor on each send effect rather than combining them like you did?

Great tutorial. Learned some new stuff to try out. I've been using kick to bass, but the others will be new territory...Thanks Again!!! Didn't get your Cheat sheet via download
Thanks! I got a bunch of emails about the download problem. I'm working with my host to fix the issue. Hoping it will be working again soon. Just in case, you can send me an email and I'll get it to you that way (my email is in description). Cheers!
@@RaytownProductions Worked in my studio last night trying out the techniques you showed us in this video....All I can say is WOW, what great results!!! I was using volume automation to "duck" different instruments but this is the way to go...Thanks Bobby for sharing this great stuff!!!
Also, drawing in a filter or volume modulation in something like Shaperbox 3 (where you can do both in one) and have it triggered by a kick? It can get HELLA precise! And it’s multi and.
I knowed the trick with the Sidechain compression of the Reverb and Delay Busses. And I always use this. But the other tricks I've never heard. but that works great. Thanks for Sharing. I love the way you describe this tricks. Specially for Rock and Metal music. But I'm wondering, why Samplitude is not supporting multiple Sidechains on one Track. 🤔🥵
Thank you so much! You are very, very kind. I sincerely appreciate your donation to support me making more helpful tutorials. It's people like you that encourage me to keep making videos. Cheers to you, my friend!
But often, I don’t tempo Synch the release. I keep it unnoticeably quick. I largely sidechain for the sake of preserving clarity of the kick and maintaining tenable headroom on the master. If I want that SP404 type pumping sound, tho, tempo synchronization is useful.
I do house/disco music and I make all the bass in stereo and I offset the bass track from the kick slightly This kinda sorta removes the bass directly from the center of the mix, where the kick resides. The Juno synth bass, with a little delay/echo sounds so much better in stereo to me and makes a mix really full sounding without adding a lot of instruments, which is essential to me since I record on an 8 track reel to reel and analog mixer, but if I ever have to do a mono type bass, I'll just arrange the bass line so that the kick and bass are not hitting at the same time, because I'm not a fan of that plugin sound......
Hello Raytown Productions, i recently see your vidéo "How to clone Guitar Tones from Your Favorite Song" which was very cool, but now I'm trying to copy the rythm guitar of the band I prevail especially from their last album TRUE POWER, but I kinda stuck and I was wondering if you could help me ? Wish you the best your vidéos are awsome ! 👌
18:00 would you do that on the snare when its fast blastbeats? And why not also doing it for the high freqs of the snare, not only the low freq of the snare
Thanks a lot, very helpful. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm wondering if TDR Nova Dynamic EQ would be another way to implement sidechaining tricks 1-4?
How do I not have the side chain external audio tab as shown in the video, is this only given as a option if the plugin is used in cubase. Kind of strange if it is.
@@RaytownProductions Thank you! also I would like to request a tutorial on getting amp sims to sound more realistic I find that they seem thin in the mix and also the distorted tones seems harsh I've used kramer tape/smooth operator/eq'd out the harsh build ups but then it sounds dull
I like your videos, but searching for a note to set sidechain tempo is a nosense... just check on timeline how long sample/kick/snare/etc is (lets say 200 ms) and then set it to realese time. Why even bother with notes here?
The absolute truth is to just use your ears to decide the right length. Tempo syncing will help keep the ducking in time with the groove of the music. This is especially important for the bass/kick which most of a song's groove comes from. Just measuring the length of an arbitrary kick sample will probably not duck the bass in a musical way with the song. Hope that gives more perspective! Great question - Cheers!
Did you really expect us listeners to hear the effect with that obnoxiously sounding bass gtr ? And why do all these post 80’s “ rock “ songs sound exactly the same ? There are a few things to be learned from here I’ll give you that , but for the most part that song is a mess .
