Couldn’t agree more. Atmos music has been an amazing added benefit to the home theater setup. Dude, thanks for the video. Seeing so much excitement about it (which made me decide to buy a surround system) is just amazing. The first song I heard in Atmos (with headphones) was "Waiting Forever" by Odesza and it was just mind-blowing, especially in the very beginning. The instruments... feel like they are dancing and surrounding you. You can feel them individually, and the voice was clearer, like... why isn't anyone talking about this? (I thought). Anyway, when I buy my system (I've already bought the Apple TV 4K to ensure the Atmos mix), I'll be back to give my thoughts on the songs you recommended. Also, BOOM sounds ridiculous even on headphones lol.
Perhaps not directly on topic, but we are talking music here. Anyways, Jennifer Athena Galatis puts out some great soundtrack Atmos theater demo tracks. I've got a 5.2.4 with front and rear heights, and she gives off some of the best overhead effects i've heard. Check her out if you haven't already. And Billie Eilish has a lot of good Atmos songs, if her music suits ones tastes.
Old songs now has good atmos mixings. Btw, your experience makes me wonder that Dolby Atmos music really works on dynamic objects and your front wides benefits from that, the sound really moves around you.
I'm not a big Michael Jackson fan but I obviously know his stuff, when I first heard thriller and billie jean in spatial audio it was amazing. I think it's in atmos but I heard it on Sony's competing format called 360 Reality Audio. I've listened to a bunch of both atmos and 360RA music and the biggest issue is each artist and sound engineer mix these uniquely which means you get different results that will be to your liking or not. For me most are an improvement but there are a few I would have preferred a different approach to how the surrounds are utilized. Then there are a few that I would prefer just stereo.
Will check these songs out. I've been listening on prime music and although it sounds good, it is real quiet compared. You have to turn it up fully. What's annoying about this is that not all songs on the same album will be in atmos, so when the next one comes on, it's extremely loud if it's not an atmos track. So you are constantly changing the volume by a lot, which is not ideal. Although the atmos music is pretty cool, I still prefer my old CDs, though. Also want to mention the Hans Zimmer live in Prague blu ray with the atmos audio. That is a great experience.
Some Dolby Atmos song mixes can be very good, but most are just gimmicky. For those interested in an immersive experience with a great musical track, checkout the following tracks: Make us Stronger by Ghost Rider, Zulu Voodoo by Kalya Scintilla, Queen Mary by Francine Thirteen. Now for truly legendary audiophile tracks with great imaging and dynamic contrast and impact checkout: Le Temps Passe (live at Cigale 1988) by Michel Jonasz, Duende by Bozzio Levin Stevens, Stimela (live at Blues Alley 1993). For those who want the bass punch impact of a John Wick movie, checkout: Trouble (live) by Fink, Death Row by Chris stapleton, Barbatuques by Biana, Fanfarra Cabua Le Le by Sergio Mendes. Crank up the volume and raise the gain on sub level output. These are visceral tracks, not just boom boom computer generated bass. Test my suggestion and you will love your system not just for movies, but for great music.
When you address people's complaints about atmos movies not utilizing the surrounds correctly you only blame it on saying often movies are focused on the front. But you know better, people have issues with action scenes that common sense would use the surrounds and don't. You know this is due to the sound engineers not taking the time or given the resources to master it like it should.
Yeah; there certainly is that element as well. But I’ve read/heard complaints about the lack of surround sounds during scenes where most of the action is focused at the front. The mixes I’ve seen handle that well are the ones where they add music and ambient sounds to the surrounds during those scenes.

@@GeorgeTheaterAtHome i have marantz sr 7015, 2 klipsch rp 600m, 2 surrounds from klipsch as well. And a center speaker from klipsch. "On" the ceiling i have four small loudspeakers.
As an audiophile listener, it's a bit taboo to listen to music in multi-channel sound 😎 2 channel stereo and a good composition of equipment, defeats all ideas of listening to multi-channel music. But.....listening to multichannel audio track is a fun factor for a while. I admit that I do it 😀 I even use it as a demo in my channel. Fans of multi-channel music would sometimes listen to Auro3D recordings, which I personally think is a better option than Dolby Atmos. If you are into a brand of amplifier that has Auro3D decoder, you could even upmix 2 channel stereo music with the Auromatic Upmixer, that's really fun
I still haven't watched the video, but there's something I'd love to know. Basically, there's a song named "Less Than Zero" by The Weeknd. At 0:26, there's a sort of electronic keyboard that shifts between the right and center channel (I believe), creating a really spatial effect. Now... there's a problem. This effect is really noticeable on Tidal Music with headphones. However, I changed my platform to Apple Music (due to a better interface and price), and this effect is gone. Completely. It looks like the stereo version. On Tidal, works every time. I'd appreciate it if you could do the test yourself. If this effect is present on your system, it will mean that Apple Music just removed the effect only when doing a downmix to 2.0 devices. In this scenario, since I'm going to buy a surround system, it won't be a problem. If you want to know more examples, I have one that's really subtle (but super atmospheric), and Apple Music also removed it.
Some SACDs and DVD-audios have been released on Apple Music in 5.1 as “Dolby Audio.” For example, most 1987 and beyond Pink Floyd /David Gilmour is in “Dolby Audio” 5.1 on Apple Music
I have Sony SACD player from 20+ years ago. Due to copyright, back than, all the decoding was to be done inside the player, and the output was 5.1 analog. There was no HDMI back then. Unfortunately, the newer receivers do not have 5.1 analog inputs.
No one said you had to love the songs. They're just there as examples of excellent Atmos mixes. "BOOM" is not a tune I'd listen to everyday but I usually use it as a demo to someone who's never heard an Atmos mix before. I'm sure there's tunes out there more to your liking.
Could not agree with you more on WDTAB it is a fantastic song. In part because it is a song AND a choreography and literally the voices dance around you. Give it a listen to “No time to die” from Billie Elish
Trying to get Amazon music in atmos on my home theatre. Certain albums show on my phone app in Atmos but not on my TV (amazon music) app. Very frustrating.
Have you tried going into the TV sound setting and clicking on pass through. Therefore, rather than the TV do the decoding, the signal will be sent to the receiver as is.
As an ardent music Stereophile, I'm skeptical of this. I've never listened to music mixed for atmos but just the concept of it reminds me of 3D movies and the gimmick that is. Most people listen to music on basically junk speakers and amplifiers. When you get a truly great setup, the music absolutely comes alive in ways that makes it sound completely new and exciting. I'm wondering if most your newfound joy in music actually comes from listening to it on great speakers, amp, and DAC which brings natural depth and clarity to the music, rather than the fact it's mixed in atmos.

Music mixed in Atmos from the ground up by experts can be amazing. Checkout Steven Wilson’s Atmos mixes of his music and others (The Who, Van Morrison, Tears for Fears). Unfortunately about 75% of Atmos music is extended stereo, just adding reverb to the Surrounds and heights.
