I share my top five basics for taking care of pet slider turtles. More details and research with a veterinarian should be done before acquiring a turtle. These are just the basics!
Great video. I bought my daughter a RES when she was 12 years old & now she's 25. When she went to college I had to care for her Turtle bc she couldn't take it to school with her. Needless to say, I've had the Turtle ever since. When I got her the Turtle it was the size of a quarter, now the Turtle is the size of a large dinner plate. Her name is Maci & her length is 10½ inches long & 10 inches wide. She's huge . . . 🐢
@@taymoney9169, well since having Maci she's been through 4 different tanks & at that time I was still learning about turtles. Had I known what I know now I just would've bought a 110 gallon tank off rip bc for every inch of Turtle shell it needs 10 gallons of space/ water. So Maci shell is 10½ inches long, so she needs to be in a 100 gallon tank with a basking area. I started out with the little plastic container I bought her in, then a 10 gallon, then a 20 gallon & then a 75 gallon.
A person abandoned a red slider hatchling and left it in an empty store for about 3 weeks. Last night I rescued it and have it in a 10 gal. tank. Today I will be going to shop for it and your video is of a lot of help. Thank you. I never abandon a pet, they become my family and I just could not understand how someone would abandon this pet turtle. I know that the minute I took it in, it became a commitment to a lot of years.
This commentator is beyond excellent... I got more precise information, clear and accurate in a short space of time then these guys who just like to talk and not tell you anything... She is awesome... I subscribed. I have four giant turtles that I rescued from the food market. They are now safe and happy and living the life. Bless you guys, great job.... and please give her a raise..
Your turtles are so well behave!! Mine will never stay that calm in my hands!! I was so nervous at the end of your vídeo when you put one over the other one😂
Thank you for the awesome tips i got two Turtles One Red Eared Slider for 24yrs now and another still looking up her species in a Huge half of Water tank about 150Gal water , i use that same type Turtle sticks for them also.
A suggestion for other viewers as well, buy pellets from well reputation producers, as the pellet makes the most of their diet the pellet must be high quality and contain correct protein source. Fresh food is always a good snack so do provide them if it could be.
Thank 😊 you for the good 👍 information I have a yellow belly slider and I love him his name is Tyler and he knows his name he's smart thank you for this video
Can you tell us more about turtle ponds that are buit for residential yards. What are some key points? ..("...must haves?..)..Please pretty please. This might be a better option since much space is needed as these 🐢babies grow.😊 Thanks!
My yellow belly has a skute on his top shell it is peeling off but not fully it looks like he itched it partially off.. idk what to do I hope he isn't sick. He eats fine and is highly active.
My turtle's love when I give them a light brush scrub ...and right now the four I have are doing very good weird thing is they don't like being separated I put them in all separate tanks and they started getting depressed so I put them all back in my 150 gallon and they are happier then ever
Sorry for the delayed response. Wattage is going to be based on the size of the enclosure and on the distance from the floor. I would ask the folks at the petstore for the right sized wattage for your sized tank.
Hi so I have a question. My baby’s mother got him a slider turtle and she supposedly says they only eat every other 2 days. I wanted to know if that’s true if not so I can correct her and let her know
Hi, I'm carrying for my brothers 8-10yr old red eared slider and have noticed that he is loosing his color. He is active and eats like normal. Any ideas what I should do?
HELP So my neighbor has a son who kept a red eared slider named Sammy. They got her or him in downtown La. he had her for about 5-7 months but kept Sammy in the kitchen under the stove light. I rescued Sammy. She’s now I’m a bigger tank but still looks like a baby. Is she okay because they had no idea about lighting or food
I wish my turtle can grow be alive as big as that. I’m worried now. I think my little turtle 🐢 is dying, not active since yesterday and now it barely move.
Hi!! At what age should I be changing feeding to 2-3 times a week.? Our slider is 1 year. We feed him daily… same with our Mississippi map turtle. We have them in separate tanks and the map is about 2 years of age… thank you in advance.
After a year you can probably start every other day and they'll be fine. I wouldn't reduce more than that until they're full sized. Like 9 to 12 inches.
I have a red eared slider and you should get them a big tank, a 10 gallon one is fine when they’re a baby but you will have to upgrade once they get bigger so I would recommend just getting a big one now if you can. They also need a filter, a heater, a heating lamp, and a basking area so like a rock or something that they can get on to bask. For food you can just get them pellets and feed them lettuce or even fruit sometime but not too often, I sometimes feed my turtle strawberries as a treat but they should be fed more vegetables. I hope this helps:)
...How long can or should baby turtles spend in water...ex, daily, weekly? We also got special drops, FYI, that are needed to be mix into water. We got food pellets, but won't eat, but ate a fly...? It likes to go inside a lego shed...Is it mimicking outdoors in any way? How much holding is too much? Thank you for your video...It really helps.👍
The most important thing is making sure it has both heat and UV lights. They go in and out of water when they want to and when they need to. There is no set amount of time. And hiding is okay too they go in and out of a hide house whenever they want also.
@@TheRedlandReptiles Good morning, an THANK YOU ever sooo much for your kindness for a reply.👍..My boys love this 🐢💌 turtle and will be happy that you help answer our questions. Thanks for your 👍 dedication.🌞
Question ❓ I have a red ear turtle, 5yrs now her name is Halo ( like the game.. first though she was a boy 😁). Is she going to be making eggs pretty soon?. I watched a video an this guy said; that a girl turtle would lay them. If nt then she could store them in her an it nt be good for her. What do you think ???? #Concerned
I actually have a question. I have just thoroughly cleaned my turtles entire tank.i cleaned everything very well. I then put a brand new filter into the tank with 5 gallons of spring water I bought from the store. Supposedly we r supposed to change the water once a week but it's only been 2 days and pretty sure already smelling ammonia. Now I know I should replace the water, but already I had to make 3 different trips into the store just to buy the water I got. With this pandemic going on the stores r only limiting us to 2 gallons at a time. I can get to a store to the end of the week, so what can I do? I'm not using my water bc the complex is using water softener salt system. It's so bad it leaves white dusty salt all over her so I switched to Gallons. Just so u know I didn't buy these guys, they were in a tank next to a dumpster in a late October and I don't have very much of an income, so I can only afford to give them the minimal care. If there is anything I can do to keep there water as clean as I can til the end of the week that'd be helpful. Thanks for the videos. Oh and I don't use twitter or Facebook.
You need to first of all keep the same filter , it has the bacteria that eats the ammonia. You will need to clean the filter in tank water. You need to learn about the nitrogen cycle. You need to not change all the water ever. It has the bacteria they need.
@@Justin-mb8ve thank u for the tips I will do my best to learn what I can. The pet store I go to only have me a small card with very little instructions. Im not sure they know that much about taking care of turtles either. They kept selling me bulbs that would explode in them from the moisture. I finally found the right kind of bulb but now I have to wait to buy proper lamps to go with it. Thank u again for the advice.
Hey, I'm looking to get one and I have some questions! If I'm getting a red eared slider at the stage of a hatchling how long can it stay in a 10 gallon tank? And do u have any filter ideas? I need a cheap filter if possible
I would say it can stay in a 10 gallon until it grows to about 3 inches. After that they definitely need an upgrade. This would be a sufficient filter for a 10 gallon tank... www.chewy.com/tetra-whisper-internal-aquarium-power/dp/133163?Tetra&gclid=CjwKCAiAirb_BRBNEiwALHlnD5IEhi3MOflE3_tw-Psl2N_AfMgB7X9R4nMhxB2LvAM4-_EERISHmhoCgAUQAvD_BwE
If you can jump up to a 40 gallon tank, I know they can be in that for about 8 inches. After that I would just recommend a pond but it will be a few years before you get to that point.
Yea that should be fine. Just keep in mind that after a few years they will be to large to have a comfortable amount of space in a tank. They can reach 10 to 12 inches and really should have a pond at that point.
I laughed twice. First time when you just let the baby turtle rest in the palm. The second time was when you stacked one turlte on top of the largest turtle
Unless its direct sunlight, I would get a UV bulb just to be sure. You really don't know how much UV rays are able to get through the window and how much is filtered out.
Should I clip there nails? I have a yellow belly turtles for years now and I was told when I bought her, that it was a female. But based on the nail length I’m assuming male. Should I be clipping his nails or not? There are very long
Honestly, it's not worth the work. They defecate a LOT. You'll have to do it 1 to 2 times a week for babies and probably every other day for adults otherwise.
My slider turtle is young right now and very big but he doesn't eat veggies 😅 I have to disguise the spinach and brocoli with meat otherwise he won't eat his greens
My baby turtle is not eating any food from 8 day's and I'm really worried about, please help me with this to give it better vitamin and minerals. It is not preferring any food. Please give me the name you have shown
I was at the park today and a baby turtle Walked up to me , it was mukky from the mud so I cleaned it notice it couldn't see so I found some water and cleaned it off , I couldn't leave it for the birds
That can be a number of things. The turtle needs to be seen by a doctor who can give it a full physical examination and perform diagnostics to figure out the source and treat the symptoms.
Mazuri brand is usually very trusted by veterinarians for most species www.amazon.com/dp/B00OV0WIPA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_fP-NDb90Q390T Zoo Med is usually fine too www.amazon.com/dp/B000ENIRZS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ZR-NDbR1CTS61
I’m so thankful that I didn’t buy one on a whim at Daytona when I was drunk that one time 😅😅😅 I’m too broke for a title rn 😅 I really want to get one after I mi w though I have a list of everything I need
They usually only do that if something on their face is bothering them. I would clean out its enclosure entirely, change out water, and give it a good warm water soak in a separate container rinse off any possible contaminants.
