I wish I’d seen this video 7 years ago when my stepdad found a painted turtle & gave it to me 😭 They are SO! MUCH! WORK! I had no idea. And I didn’t have the space at the time for a turtle, so the poor thing lived in a 20gal until I rehomed it to someone more knowledgeable. Turtles are so cute & deserve to be treated so much better than they are by unresearched owners. ☹️
This happened to me I got a yellow belly and the lady selling them said they aren’t that much work and didn’t tell me how to care for them. The moment I got I did my research and went out to go get them what they needed
I have three turtles that do NOT get along, I cannot house them together so I have THREE turtle tanks XD I don't have the space or money for external filtration so I do weekly water changes and it takes an hour for each tank, but they're worth it. I probably shouldn't have gotten them because there's so much time and money and space involved but they're adopted from people who were going to throw them to the river because they got tired of them and I just couldn't let them. It makes me so happy to see them with actual tanks to swim in (one was housed in a hamster cage for eight years before i adopted him) and filters and controled heating and natural sunlight to bask in daily,if I had to do it all over again I so would
I myself got 2 turtles in a gift from a reletive who died because of Corona I think he knew he would die that's why he gave me them. There name is froppy and shel I don't have the space or money and I don't know what to do with them. Eny Edvice?
No living creature should be given into the sole care of a child until the child has demonstrated an intrest, aptitude, and ability to maintain the animal. Even then, there must be an adult to ensure the resources are provided for the child to properly care for the animal (habitat, nutrition, and vet care).
My pawpaw has raised a turtle named tuck for 11 years now and they juss let it roam around the house and feed it worms and stuff .. it hasn’t died yet 😂😂🤦♀️
Very helpful! I’m a tarantula keeper but one day someone (a kid from my apartment complex I’m assuming) left a red eared slider on my door step in a tiny enclosure with the food on top. I had no idea how to take care of a turtle luckily I actually have done all the right things. Thanks so much for the feeding outside of the enclosure tip I can’t believe I never thought of that 🤦🏻♀️ cleaning the tank is a PROCESS and filter replacements are expensive but I love him so much wouldn’t trade him for the world!
Thank you for this. My turtle was a gift. So far im doing everything right. Thank you for the idea of feeding them in a separate container. That will make it so much easier
I watched this because my husband and I are considering buying a turtle but we want to do it right and take good care of it. Thank you so much for this video!
I used to have a red eared slider (called red eared terrapins here in the UK). It was the size of a dinner plate. For years I was convinced that I had a boy, but I have come to realise that I had a girl all along: the females grow much larger than the males, and they have shorter tails and front claws compared to the males. She loved uncooked defrosted cod fishfingers (with the breadcrumb coating removed before feeding it to her, of course).
Omg thank you so so much for this video. When I was little, like, ten years ago, I really wanted a pet and my mom bought me a turtle. We didn't have any ideas of how much we would have to work to keep her well and we didn't take well care of her for years. Now that I'm older and starting to take care of her by my own I realized we are doing SO MANY THINGS WRONG like omg I can't stop feeling guilty. When I discovered we were neglecting her, I started doing a lot of research and I told my parents about it all, so we're building a new enclosure to her. I'm watching so many videos and all, and this one is far one of the better of them. Take you so much for helping me taking better care of my turtle.
This is awesoomee! Turtles are neglected so much by lot of people... The rescue i volounteer at is full of red eaered sliders and yellow bellied sliders who were released into the wild (it's a very big problem here in Italy, they became two of the most problematic invasive species) or straight up surrendered after months or years of abuse... It's just heartbreaking.
A friend of my mom's gifted me a painted turtle years ago when I was a kid, maybe 4th or 5th grade. I loved him, and took care of him as well as I could. He loved minnows. I could watch him stalk them for hours, it was so fascinating. I was young, and really knew nothing about taking care of turtles or reptiles in general, my mom was not well versed in the subject either lol. He had nowhere to bask or anything. I had him for maybe 2 years before I gave him away to a friend. I'm heavily considering getting another painted turtle or 2 now that I have the means and the know-how to do it properly
I'm so glad I came across this video. My 12yr son was gifted an aquatic turtle...not sure the type. But I'm realizing this is another child for me lol. Now I'm going out to buy different types of food, different lights and a bigger tank including decorating the inside. My question is if and how long can aquatic turtles be out of water?
This was a super helpful video! I have a painted turtles and I bought them everything they needed as soon as possible! And I'm so happy and obsessed with them 😁 they do require a lot of care and work but it's definitely worth it, they are such beautiful and unique creatures 🐢
Very helpful, our niece just got a baby turtle and was not ready to really care for him. We decided to take him to help give him the best conditions. First time turtle and reptile owner so I have been doing a crazy amount of research. He is still in a smaller tank, but it will be replaced soon.
I recently stayed with a family.member and was appalled to find he's been keeping 2 turtles in a small bowl for a couple years , I'm in the process of pushing him hard to sort out a proper housing for them ! While I was there I put a rock in the bowl to have a basking area which they used everyday , I also put them outside everyday for some sunshine .
question! i rescued a red eared slider from a girl who was keeping him in one of the small critter keeper containers..she said she had owned the turtle for about 2 years..i brought him home and put him in a 10 gallon aquarium (to not overwhelm him) and i’ve had him for almost a year. He is still SO TINY, he’s doubled in size, but he’s still probably about 1 1/2 inches around. I always thought that “keeping him in a small container will keep him small” was a myth too..so i’m not sure why he’s not growing?
I just rescued a turtle. She was in a very bad situation and they had no clue. I'm trying to learn and give her the best life ever. I don't know anything about her except I do know about bearded dragons and that she's going to need special lights special food special temperatures
i already made a BIG mistake a year ago, i just bought one turtle because i thought it was cute and bought it without doing research, and after that time now i have 5 turtles but i am happy i saw this video so i can keep my turtles healthy!
I adopted two baby res turtles this past summer from someone selling them illegally, without having any knowledge that it is illegal or how to care for them. However, I am a very passionate animal caretaker so I have done loads of research :) They are currently basking on their dock while I watch this video XD I love watching these kinds of turtle videos since I can see how other people have their full grown turtles set up. I love how you built their dock to look a little bit more natural with the hanging plant and wood logs, I would love to do something similar!
Impt. Video I live near a creek n have rescued turtles 🐢 that have wandered in the street .I've always retired the safely to their natural environment..lulu is so cute .
Do you feed your turtles every day or every other day or something else... also how long can a turtle go without food (red eared slider turtle) someone plz give me an answer
My African side neck was bought at a pet smart and when we saw her in her terrarium the water wasn’t even up to half to her shelf and she was still pretty young
I bought a red eared slider and I knew I what I was doing, he came a small container I quickly moved him to a 10 gallon tank keep in mind he was a baby. I’m happy there’s people like you that tell people the truth before the kill them by not knowing the truth
I just got a new turtle. She's 7 years old. A friend of mine had her in a 10 gallon tank and she's 15cm. Now she in my 40gallon. I know it's small but at least she's better and i'l locking forward to update her into sometime big. I'm having a hard time figuring out the specie, cause she's not a false map turtle as I was told. Idk if she's a river cooter, yellow belly slider or a painted turtle
I impulse buy large turtles 😳 it requires two 120gallon tanks four turtles 😬 but I love them they are soooo cute! They also love to sleep & bask together!
some questions my beautiful youtuber! i heard that the lamps must turn of half day at the night is that true ? i bought a small turtle and i have one lamp for heat and it writes UVA no UVB you think i must buy UVB too ? i have one heater device for the water , and some dry foods , you think it needs live food too worms etc ? thank you keep up good work
when i was 5 we got a turtle when i was able to read i read the whole book about those turtles we were a very poor family and i wanted my turtle to be healthy and happy but we just couldn't afford all the stuff she needed then she died when i was 9 now im 14 and have enough money to get one with all the stuff she needs and i can't wait for it
It so weird though. My cousin has two turtles. ( like the one you showed at the beginning) but they are small. They haven’t grown. ( they still look like babies ) but the turtles are old as well. My cousin has them in a small ( not even 5 gal ) tank. Obviously that’s wrong, but those turtles have been with her for more than 8 years now. I’m trying to make her understand the importance of giving the turtles more space, variety of food and care. But I find it very weird how the turtles are still alive, and haven’t grown a bit after all these years.
Awesome video, just some food for thought. The ex70s are ok, checkout an aquaclear 110 (do away with cartridges) Get a good bio cycle going. Weekly 50% water changes and gravel vac. Bada Bing you just cut your maintenance from a few hours to 30 min. I have a yellow belly ( Betty), painted (Vincent), and an African SN (Bubbles) how's together too.... Bubba is my snapper, he's got his own mansion
My class had a turtle for a class pet for the first 3 months of school and all we did was change the water and feed the turtle and it was still alive untill the student/owner had to take back the turtle becuz yeah it's her's the heat lamp wasn't needed cuz I live in very hot country so it wasn't needed but good advice : -)
I have an aquatic turtle that a stupid guy took from a river (🙄) and didn't have him in a good condition, my poor boy had bacteria on his shelf because he never received sun. I didn't want a turtle as a pet but I couldn't handle to see him in that condition and aked him to give him to me. So he's now with me, being happy in a big tank, I take him out to my backyard every morning to receive sun, and finally he's actually on a diet because at first I knew nothing about turtles and he got fat 😅 but he's getting skinny now lol 💚
I just rescued a yellow belly slider natural from Florida. She was in the side walk really dry. I make no idea how it came far from the canal. She seem very active in the aquarium. Should i put it back to the canal? Seem to be so little to survive...
I thank you for this video. I will wait and keep doing my research. I was going to get one but now I am definitely going to need some more time to think about this.
My mom literally had the turtle in 3 inches of water... The turtles at least 6 inches smh shes been doing it all wrong but im taking care of it now because she never cleaned the take just the filter and the poor turtle was COVERED in algae but I cleaned him up with a toothbrush and were getting better everyday. Hes basking now that its properly set for him to climb on and hes swimming and stretching his neck out so I feel like I'm doing good. I just need more rocks and plants and I guess we need a uvb light. We just have a heat lamp. But the tank isnt even half full and my mom thought I was putting too much water wow. When before he could barely swim. I think he had to sleep with his neck out of water. Im glad im learning to care for this turtle. I felt so bad for the condition he was in. And im thinking of getting a baby turtle so theres no struggle for dominance but he also wont be lonely. Idk I just want him to be happy after all this time of barely living.
I have one baby red eard slider and one five inch red eard slider one box turtle and one tortoise and one ball python and one baby Mississippi map turtle and two green anoles and one long tailed grass lizard and three leopard geckos
Hi, your video contains sooo many helpful informations!Thank you sooooo much... ❤️ I have two Yellow Bellied Slider Turtles too. They are around 7 too 8 years old and measuring 13cm. I really want to know how to let them have a good and healthy hibernation. How long should they stay there? Which temperature is the best? How much space do they need? How much water should be in there? I keep them in the cellar now. It’s always very dark and pretty quiet. Is this good? My turtles are very important to me and I would love giving them a good life. I hope you can answer some of my questions! Thank you so much again!😊
I have a turtle n idk if it is a boy or girl, it looks like an adult idk but my sister had it for like 4 or 5 years and she never would feed it it never goes outside and just straight abused it so I said I can keep it, so now im binging turtle videos on RU-vid
I rescued a Red-Eared Slider this year. It was nearly 3 years old and never had UVB, nor a hot spot, nor a balanced diet(it was eating baby turtle pellets only), and it was in a 10 gallon tank.... I’m not dissing what you’ve said but I’ve done a ridiculous amount of research this year and I disagree with 1 statement that you made. Turtles should have 1 gallon of water per 1 inch of shell from the base of their neck to the base of their tail. Just do some research on it if you’re curious. Thanks for speaking awareness about the neglect that happens to turtles. Mine is a perfect example of how often this happens and to what degree their neglect gets. Mine is certainly lucky to be alive, and they’re hella spoiled now. ;)
I got a baby res I like the idea u said feed outside the tank ! Great idea mine is a baby so should I give it mostly protein like pellets and shrimp .. or should I mix the veggie too
Is there a problem if the tank is way bigger than the turtle?? Im planning on getting a kinosternon leucostomum but my tank is kinda big, like yours, anyway thank you, saludos desde México ❤🇲🇽 amo todos tus videos!!
My turtle came from a bad environment and never had a proper heating source. Now that I’ve got everything for him he basks a lot of the time and he’s starting to get brown on his neck area he’s a red eared slider can you please give me any advice?
I got mine from a chinches store and there water was so small and they are big and they only feed the once a week and I brought one and they are eating good now
