Well overdoing something does ensure that it's done perfectly - come on, we all admire his skill, and while RED is extremely excessive, he'd be fine without it, his quality is incredible with or without top of the line videography
Yes exactly. Although it goes without saying the XPS15 would win. My big question is upcoming MBP retina 15" with oled bar vs XPS 15. The question is more a mac vs windows one, but its a tough decision. So used to macs now
who knows if they are able to ditch the idea of gaming like they did in the past whos to say they can't bring it back. of course they market to video editors and the creative peoples so perhaps they still don't want to be associated with gaming but look at ios its one of the biggest gaming platforms around and yes I face palm saying that but its true they could do it! they have the technical know how, the systems and connections. maybes its time to leverage that. HP, Asus, MSI and other companies have gaming laptops everyone except apple. fine they don't have to market to gamers but put a good video card in there for us!
apple's products have been moving away from gaming machines for a while. good luck getting developers to waste their time coding games for apple's OS. it's not worth their time.
nemoo7 Sure! Happy to share. Pros: TONS of power. No issues there Contrary to popular belief, cooling is GREAT! I never get above 80 degrees Celsius on my GPU or CPU, and that is right within the comfortable acceptable safe range. Screen is matte, and beautiful, with great colors. Screen also has G SYNC! Its a huge difference vs a non G Sync Screen. The laptop only weighs 5 POUNDS! And it has a GTX 1070! It's insane, I still can't believe it. And finally, it's decently thin! Razer Blade still takes the cake for the best form factor but this laptop is trailing behind and its decently close. Keyboard is great! The laptop looks AMAZING. Cons: Build quality is DECENT. not excellent but that can seriously be forgiven at this excellent price point. Speakers are "meh". Doesn't matter to me because I have headphones. Battery life is not that good, especially under load of games. That's all I can think of, honestly in my opinion this is one of the best value laptops available for purchase right now. Even if it's more expensive, go for it my friend! It will still be the cheapest with all this power.
aryarock22 Im thinking of getting the VM (slim version with 1060). Not sure if you're still around but some input would help :) How's your system so far? I picked it because I want it to be a match between my business work and a little bit of gaming on the side. How's the trackpad? Keyboard typing? Im coming from a macbook so I guess they wont be that impressive? Wanted to go for Razer blade but their horrible service and risk of repair threw me off. I've heard bad things about the xps 15 in terms of reliability, plus it has the older 960 so this is probably the best choice.
The glass trackpad on the razer blade is the most accurate windows laptop trackpad I've ever used, and I like the physical buttons more than diving board trackpads.
+Zentex I like the blade a lot but aside from build quality and size, I wouldn't place it as a winner in any other category. (Well aesthetics but that's a very personal thing)
***** Why do you like the other trackpads, screens, and keyboards over the blade's? The blade has the best keyboard and trackpad I've ever used on a windows laptop.
I'm glad I bought my Alienware 15 back in 2016. It's still alive and kicking in late 2020 and I can play most of new games with good graphics and performance.
Right?! Seems the only brands that 'get it' are Dell and Razer. The rest just scream 'LOOK AT MY NEON GEARZ'. It's getting tiring seeing this in the gaming industry, especially when most gamers now are mid-20's+ who don't want to walk around with neon-gear.
I totally agree. For that matter, I'd buy a clevo if I was going for a gaming laptop. For now, I am happy with my xps15 but I'm still hoping for a reasonable egpu solution.
zeron82411 It still drags along the stereotype that 'gamerz love neon' (in this case that neon/bright orange). The GL502 does look pretty good, but it's still got that look...
A.D.Dudes I guess you can say that. but I personally don't find it "out there." Even my friends who are non gamers don't find the design "out there" either.
Hey, I've been looking for a gaming laptop thats right for me. I was wondering I play shooters and Action-Adventure games like Alien: Isolation what would be the best laptop for me? Also is the Alienware 15's Keyboard mechanical? Because I don't like Mechanical Keyboards. Thanks for all the help!
+strkilla89 it definitely does not have the best trackpad. I use it regularly, it's a great device overall but the trackpad is one of its weakest features
***** seriously? Mines fine and other reviewers have given it stellar marks on the trackpad. You might have a dud... Mines on par with a macbook pro touchpad in terms of sensitivity
Hey Dave, one great aspect I've noticed from watching other tech channels is that some of them (like Edgar from TechSource) provide US, UK, and CAD prices in their reviews or best tech deals when recommending products. I think this would be a small, but incredibly useful addition to your content. It doesn't necessarily need to be spoken in the video but it could just be provided visually. Thanks! and best of luck in your future videos.
I have to pass on Dells after two failed attempts with their 6560U XPS 13. I had been considering the Asus UX303UB, but I don't trust their quality control.
XPS 15 replaced my Samsung Gamer 7. It has dedicated graphics, quad core, 1TB SSD, yet qualifies as an ultrabook. Battery life is amazing. The display is a lot better than the Razer with none of the fingerprints. For a hardcore gamer perhaps they should get the Razer, but as I have a PC I built for games, XPS fit the bill. Thanks for including it.
Had 3 people in my company go for the DELL XPS 15 with 4k screen on it. I warned them everything's gonna look like shit on it, because since Windows 95 nobody thought about equipping their software with icons better than 1:1 DPI and some even implemented bars and window panels as bitmaps, and some languages and technologies don't even support scaling until today at any level. OMG I WANT 4K ITS AWESOME U KNOW NOTHING. 1 month later all 3 units have been returned and reordered with the standard screen. Same thing on latest MacBook, but at least Apple forces developers of new apps to be high DPI scaling compatible, so they have at least SOME progress. Windows will not be higher DPI ready for the next 10 years AT LEAST.
yup, the 4k screen is awesome for content creation (and kinda required for 4k content creation), but TONS of developers still have low rez app icons heh
The XAML devel for .NET handles scaling out of box, but icons being bitmaps cannot be upscaled automatically, because the information is just missing - it can't upscale an image and add information it doesn't have. If a developer wants to make the app compatible regarding icons, for every icon size Windows utilizes, that is 16, 32, 64, 128 and 256 since Vista, there has to be it's version with higher DPI. So if you want to make it compatible with current Windows options, you have to provide at least 3 versions of each resolution for 100, 125 and 150 percent. That is added work and increased costs, it is very hard to justify the added cost to a customer, so there is little or no effort to actually implement this, because the customer often doesn't even understand the concept. With older technologies like Windows Forms, the scaling capability was very limited and items on screen often looked distorted, out of order. Developer had to specifically implement the DPI scaling himself, for every DPI value, which nobody did. I'm sure we have lots of Java developers that can testify the devel on their platform was just as bumpy.
Is it weird to say this...but whatever, I honestly subscribed to your channel because 1. Your voice is so calm (I don't know, just feels so mellow) 2. Love your transition and the specs animation on the bottom, haha. 3. I mean, I love tech in general...so yeah. Thanks for being a favorite youtuber of mine.
Dave my man, I didn't just like the video, I loved it. I had almost finalized on getting the Predator 15 with 980m for grad school and after looking at this video of yours, I think I've made my decision (although I plan on getting it by August-September). One important thing to note, Acer upgraded the Predator 15 from the G9-591 to G9-592 recently. The upgrade offers an RGB colored backlight for the keyboard & glowing trackpad outline along with a more efficient set of fan blades in the FROSTCORE. I just hope team green and team red don't announce new mobility graphic cards immediately after I've bought a laptop. As always, keep up the great work ✌️
You've done a great job dude! a bonus feature i think would make it even better it that you could add to your videos is a table comparing the results of each laptop according to the faces of comparison upon your results. just an idea though, keep up the good job
I really have yet to find another tech reviewer who gives such excellent visual presentation of a product, and lays out their specs in such a meaningful way. Love your videos man, keep it up.
There are just too many high end gaming laptops! ROG was my first my choice, then opted to Alienware, then DELL 7567..finally got confused! Ive been watching your reliable reviews for weeks now, this is the verdict video, and Im going for ACER Predator 15! buying it weeks from now. Thank you Dave! your REVIEWS are by far the BEST!!! Helps me finally decide which device to buy:)
I don't need a gaming laptop in my life. I just love watching Dave's thorough videos. Almost 200k subscribers! Still waiting for Dave to review sandwiches. From clubhouse, BLT, Philly cheesesteak, to PB&J. I would like to see the thermals on all these sandwiches.
Dave your videos are so clean! I can't properly describe how enjoyable it is to watch your videos. The information output is always high but easy to grasp. Great channel!
for the guys wondering about Europe, I live in Austria just bought the Alienware 15, GTX 980M 8gbs, 1TB HDD + 256 SSD, 16 gbs Ram, 1080p display for: 2050 Euros {On sale from 2300 Euros} = 2,279 Dollars (on sale from $2,557) Prices in Europe are DEFINITELY much more expensive by all means due to all the taxes.
The Dell's display is just stunning to me, 4K and those thin bezels, obviously it won't run games at native res but still awesome for video and just general use.
Nice comparison review, very comprehensive. It would be awesome if you could make a version of this one but for the 17 inch options, an even more so for the budget 17 inch lot.
yes dev you did good things comparing all the gaming machines and giving us the best performance machine with expandability and good build quality.perfect video for who want a best gaming machine with expandability and best performance.
So I just subscribed to this channel and wtf? Why do you not have more subscribers these videos are amazing with so much detail and they're helping me a lot in choosing a gaming laptop btw I think I could fall asleep to your voice
If they can just find a way to improve the cooling, give better hardware and than maybe add some kind of elegant battery attachment I would pull the trigger but caring out a graphics amplifier or a razor core seems more trouble than its worth. Than again I could also see practical use in stationary scenarios.
Another fantastic review Dave! You brought about all the laptops I was investigating, and it came down to the Razer Blade and the XPS 15. Went with the XPS as, like you, did not enjoy the addition of the buttons on the trackpad, and the wonky trackpad drivers. The Dell just felt 'smoother' overall for lack of a better way of describing. IMO, I definitely get the feeling that the staying power of our laptops going forward will be geared much more towards mobility + the eGPU option(s) when at home. Very excited to see what's to come
Dave thank you for this video, i'm literally looking at all these laptops trying to make my mind up, I think i've gone full circle and i'm going for the Alienware, Battery life and Gaming power? sign me up.
keeping up your videos. made me keep up new tech. finally can put that knowledge to work, getting a laptop around $1500 going for MSI GE62VR 7RF but still waiting for your best gaming laptop video (end 2016)
Hey Dave, would you be able to do a laptop for school? Something portable but still powerful for mild gaming or video editing. Thanks! Also, from your reviews I'm looking at the Xps 15 but I still have till the end of the year to decide :D
I like the xps 15 too! The razer blade is around the same price as the more expensive xps but for a sub 1500 laptop I think the alienware 13 is around there and is more powerful gpu wise, although it isn't as slim.
My father bought me the acer predator 15 as a present and told me that was the best laptop in that shop. So i'm here searching for the best laptop and this video made my day and made me so happy. Thanks dad.
man so much information... its just awesome.. keep up the good work buddy.. love u..

Awesome review as usual. Thanks for comparing gaming laptops, is probably hard to gather so many so good and is for a very specific audience. Appreciate it ;)
Very well done video. I have a MSI GS60, and love it, I got it with a few upgrades from XoticPC, came in around $1900. If I had no budget though, I would really like the Aorus X5.
I started with the GS60 Pro-002 spec, had the 126gb SSD replaced with a 256gb SSD, had them use IC Diamond compound on the CPU and GPU (only a few degrees I know, but over a few years it may help), and I had them put a Carbon Fiber wrap on the out side since it is a finger print magnet. I think that is all, I may have forgotten a something small.
Random Guy Nice. I recently got a Ghost Pro as well but from Best Buy. I was debating on getting it online but chose a local retailer instead in case of issues. Anyway, I hope you didn't get any light bleed and enjoy the laptop.
I'm glad you added the Dell XPS 15 to this mix, since most other reviewers don't consider it a "gaming" laptop, due to the 960m card. I've been considering it since my main games are CPU and not GPU based games (like Guild Wars 2), though I've heard the XPS 15 has a throttling issue (size and weight is a major issue for me, which is why I shied away from larger machines).
maybe the best presented, most accurate and fairest overview i saw on youtube till now. It's very hard for me to pick a gaming notebook. I sruggle with the decision now a half year. Most of all I like the Acer Predator the most. But besides everything that Acer does great, it's big. REALLY big ( 4:04 ). If the Razor does not get that loud, that it makes you crazy, i would like to get this notebook. BUT (!) i live in Europe (Germany). And as far as i know Razor just produces for the US Market. Anyway, Thanks for the Great Comparision-Video.
Great video . Commentary , music , videography etc on point, probably one of the best tech reviewers on youtube! Quick question for anyone else reading. Do you think I should get the xps15 for moderate gaming? (Overwatch, league, hots maybe some other light games). I want an ultrabook that has sleek appearance and I could use out and about without the childish 'gamer' design. I'm a bit worried by the number of quality issues and tech complaints im reading online.
