You got me hooked as soon as you put Mad Hatter on the list! THANK YOU! Dear Jervis deserves more love, respect, attention, and effort put into his stories.
You're welcome! Yes sadly it seems like the writers at DC just don't care about ol' Jervis. When they finally do use him he's just an unlikeable silly creep..
I was disappointed that you didn't add the penguin because he had amazing episodes and Paul Williams did a perfect voice for him and I liked that he was more poetic and more nice than he was before and I can prove that by his rule "honor among thieves" which I really like but that's my opinion!
He was good and one of my runner ups, probably would've been my #6 or #7. If you haven't already, watch my "Birds of a Feather" video, I talk a lot about TAS Pengy there.
Paul Dini usually always has the best depictions of Jervis Tetch. Even in the comics handled by Dini, the Mad Hatter is sometimes portrayed as not all that bad of a guy! Definitely, well, mad, but still had some humanity to him. There's one Batgirl comic written by Dini where Jervis is the Mad Hatter actually saves a lesbian woman and tends to her wounds, and allows her to accompany him in getting revenge on the man responsible for killing her girlfriend.
I wouldn't apologize to Nolan, personally he only got one villain right and that was Two-Face... Then he killed him. And how can you not resist the urge to put Two-Face at 2? My list is probably: 1. Mr Freeze (defining origin) 2. Two-Face 3. The Joker (best Joker ever) 4. The Riddler (John Glover really sells this) 5. Red Claw (another created just for the show I believe, but I don't think ever made it into the comics, but I love the episodes)
Great video ! Your channel has quickly become one of my favorites on RU-vid.Overall, not just in TAS, but in all of Batman media I'd say my top 5 are. 5. Basil Karlo's Clayface .4. The Riddler .3. The Mad Hatter .2. Scarecrow .1. Two Face. Number 1 and 2 have flip flopped a lot over time, but they've always been my top batman villains. I also really like some of the more underrated villains like Zsasz, Maxie Zeus, Humpty Dumpty, and Tally Man. All of batman's major foes I love pretty much in some way, besides Ra's Al Ghul, I've always found him a little overrated.
Don't forget Roddy McDowall was also "The Bookworm" in the "Batman" series in '66. I think it's now fair to call Mark Hamill's Joker legendary, and I think we got a nice hint of the Joker when Hamill portrayed "The Trickster" in "The Flash" tv series, a year before the "Batman" series began. I remember seeing him in an interview just before his episode aired, and he was so excited to be portraying one of his favorite comic characters. (I'm sure Tim Curry would have done a good job to, but...) I don't know how I missed Richard Moll was two-face, I'm a big fan of the actor. And though I like all the Villains of this series, I do kind of wish they'd stayed closer to the comic origin of Two-Face. And Mr. Freeze voiced by Michael Ansara! Great choice, and another good Batman character made great! Yeah, "I figured it out," but since she was created for the series, and grew to be so popular on the series, she fits as number one I think. And if you haven't seen it look for the video on RU-vid on Arleen Sorkin on "Days Of Our Lives" using the voice that inspired her friend Paul Dini to create the character. What would my list be? I'm sure if you asked me my answer would change often. But the true genius of the show is Paul Dini. Credits to the voice actors, but behind it all was Paul. Honorable mentions to Paul Williams as The Penguin, Adrienne Barbeau as Catwoman, David Warner as Ra's al Ghul, Ron Perlman as Clayface, John Glover as The Riddler, Marc Singer as Man-Bat, and Henry Silva as Bane. Thank you so very much for your video.
It was a one-two punch combination of "A Lonely Place of Dying" and the "Two-Face" two-parter from this show that has forever made Harvey my favorite Batman rogue.
Caring for a fire is a lot like caring for a child. You have to be attentive and watch them as they grow, trying your best to make sure they stay alive and grow big and strong... I like to imagine that this is Lynn's mentality toward his infernos and why he's so obsessed with them.
For me Poison Ivy should’ve been number 2, in almost all portrayals Poison Ivy is just a plant obsessed lady who seduces men to achieve her goals but we don’t know why she is obsessed or why she hates men, in the animated series she hates men and is a low-key feminist(but in a good aspect) because she was seduced by a scientific who was responsible for making her immune to poisons but at the same time he killed any chances for her to live a normal life, if you watched the web series Gotham Girls Poison Ivy is a great mother and in “House & Garden” she tries to be one but fails as she knows that as much as she enjoys a family it is purely brainwashing and mutating DNA, that’s why she takes Plants as her children; But in the Animated Series it didn’t end there, she creates plant clones of herself(one that burns itself out, and another that appears in The Trial and TNBA) and escapes to retire from crime. And pretty much is more enjoyable because we know what she wants instead of being a walking plant and shows her humanity, in TNBA yeah she’s fun and everything but she’s just a clone and is nerfed to just work with Harley Quinn.
5. Two Face (Cmon it's so good) 4. Mad Hatter (everything you said) 3. Harley (The original take is by far the best take. Arleen is great but no one else gets her right) 2. Joker (Hamill Joker fucking nails it, and nails everything about the Joker and is in my opinion the most interesting take on Joker) 1.Mr Freeze (Nuff said)
I appreciated the insight about the improvements of some of the characters, but as a kid who watched this after school, Poison Ivy and Scarecrow were the two villains I always hoped to see. Seeing who the villain was that day was half the fun of watching. For me, the Joker was a disappointing one. He had too many episodes and just wasn't as fun or intriguing as others...
It is amazing how much of an impact the animated series had on the Batman mythose. I never realized that Mr Freeze's entire modern interpretation started here.
Probably he was not considered cos of his actual lack of episodes dedicated to him, but I think the ManBat was one of the greatest Batman TAS villains; he was way more primal and wild than the comicbook counterpart, and for me it was an improvment of the character. He reminds me of the Spiderman TAS version of The Lizard, but while Dr. Connors his turned to a monster by chance, making him sympatetic, as well as it happens for the original Man Bat (that is even difficult to be considered as a rogue) the TAS manbat choose to transofrm into the monster, giving birth to the scene that I think is one of the MOST ICONIC and disturbing of the TAS "..... it's in ME, BATMAN....MWAHHAHHAHHAAHHAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHHAHAAAAAAARRRRRRGHGROWWWWWAHHHHR". Anytime someone asks me about TAS I just search for this scene on youtube. As the first episode, as well as the first Villain, ManBat defined the genre of the show, showing to children and parents that TAS should be wartched WHIT your famility, to not just hearing a child screaming all of a sudden from the living room.
1. The Ventriloquist and Scarface 2. Joker 3. The Mad Hatter 4. Twoface 5. Mr Freeze 6. The Clock King 7. The Riddler 8. Poison Ivy 9. Penguin 10. Manbat
Not even an honorable mention for Baby Doll? Her villainous theme was unconventional to say the least, but the internal conflict made her a great character.
My Top 10: 1. The Joker 2. Harley Quinn 3. Mr. Freeze 4. Two-Face 5. The Mad Hatter 6. Clayface 7. Andrea Beaumont/The Phantasm 8. The Penguin 9. The Riddler 10. The Scarecrow
My Top 5 B:TAS Rogues 1. Two-Face 2. The Joker 3. The Mad Hatter 4. Mr.Freeze 5. Scarecrow Two-Face's 2-part origin episode arc were in my opinion of the best and darkest episodes I've seen in any superhero cartoon. Gotta love Paul Dini's dramatic character & story writing.
My dear Mr. Rogue, do you think you could explain something to me? I agree the Hatter fell rather short in the comics, but any idea why, of all villains, he seems to get along best with The Scarecrow? I have no idea why those two would get along as well as they do, so if you could explain it to me, or even suggest some comics with the two being a pair? Cause I'm always on the lookout for a good Scarecrow story, I'll even take one where he's paired with someone as silly as The Hatter.
The list from my opinion for the five best BTAS rouges: 5. Mad Hatter, 4. Two Face, 3. Mr. Freeze, 2. Ras Al Ghul, 1. Joker / PS, this is a villain list which is why Harley isn’t on here since she’s not as villainous as more of the other rouges.
20:50 Harley's "I can do it myself, thank you!" (FAIL) was my favorite moment of hers. Also I'm a little bothered that Riddler wasn't on the list, as the animated series was my favorite version of him.
I can't believe so many people doesn't like the design change of BTAS or the whole season 4 (aka TNBA) because of that, despite the fact it's the same design as in Batman Beyond, Superman TAS & both Justice League series and no one complains about the design there. It makes no sense to me most of the time.
I know you watch Gotham the Mad Hatter is so great in that live action show. Please do a video about Gotham the show on Fox. No one has a good review on RU-vid about that show.
I would mostly agree with this list... Even if I would personally try to add Ventriloquist to mine. To my knowledge, this show beat Knightfall to really exploring his issues/multiple personality in a compelling way while also making him a greatly amusing character, a la Harley. Didn't hurt that Dini clearly has a soft spot for the guy. He had an amazing TNBA episode too.
in the batman animated series all villains are cool characters but the best its CAPTAIN CLOWN Resit in peace!!! seriously other fives great villains: Scarface, the Riddler, Killer Croc, Poison Ivy and Penguin
who was the villion that fell into the same vat that the joker fell into. i think he wore like a fluffy looking red scarf or cape and green underwear and i think he was immortal too.
I love Phantasm and SubZero, they're two of my favorite animated Batman movies. Mystery of the Batwoman I haven't seen in so many years, I can't honestly say. I like Return of the Joker, although I'm not really a fan of Batman Beyond.
I think you could've left the joker out, because he's such an obvious pick. I wish the writers of tas rewrote more obscure villains. They were so good at writing their villains. The only villain they didn't do justice was bane.
1. Joker (Great design, love Mark Hamil's interpretation) 2. Two-Face (Good tragic character, like his origin story in Batman TAS, great voice acting. It is interesting that Two-Face seems to have this compulsive obsession with his coin because otherwise, he can't make a decision. This somewhat humanizes him, IMO) 3. Clayface (Gave me nightmares as a child, so looking back now, great design. Like his abilities.) 4. Harley Quin (I dislike how she keeps getting emotionally manipulated by the Joker and keeps coming back to him, despite how he awful he treats her, psychologically this is realistic. Besides that, she is a good character mostly, though I like her more on her own rather than Joker's sidekick/ fangirl. I like her paired up with Ivy or Batman. Her voice actor is great.) 5. Scarecrow (Season 2 of Batman TAS's design was nicely creepy, therefore a good villain IMO. I like the fear and psychology thing)
Mr.Freeze is my favorite batman character due to tas and it always angered me that they had arnie who could have done a good job at playing freeze if he had just played it like the first terminator film cold emotionless
