Your CO2 videos are what got me to get into hi tech tanks MJ. I was hesitant at first but your calm narration made me feel more confident. It's weird to say I was nervous to try a simple CO2 system, but there's a lot to learn about this hobby when you first get started. Thank you for this content.

You can avoid dumping CO2 into the tank at night by adding a splitter valve and just bleed the CO2 somewhere else when the lights are off. If you have two tanks on opposite light cycles you can double the efficiency by just swapping back and forth between the tanks.

I have a zrdr solenoid diy set from Amazon. I got the 4L and cannot recommend it enough. Got 650 psi built up in the tank and have been running worry free for months now. CO2 on anything under 60 gallons, it’s your best buy for sure.

I went to my local sod farm and they gave me a cut of sod the size of my tank bottom for free after I told them what I wanted to try, I laid down a thin layer or pond soil followed by a layer of aquasoil then placed the length of sod on top. Its been 6 months and its flourishing, the grass is amazing and all of my fish and shrimp love it.

Those chihiros regulators look nice. I like the app control vs a smart plug. Btw for anyone wondering a 2.5 lb co2 cannister last my 20 gallon tank for over a year. Cost 15 bucks to get refilled at my local fire extinguisher place.

Thanks Mark great content clearly presented as always. In the UK it can be expensive to get a cylinder filled and a challenge to find a company willing to do it. We tend to use refurbished and refilled Fire Extinguishers here, even on a large tank running with hard water, a 5 Kg tank will last around a year and will prove very economical. Space of course is an issue with 5 Kg fire extinguisher cylinders and they must be treated with care, pressurised gas can be dangerous. The hand needs to be depressed, cable ties work well though some folks use duck tape, I always doubt the long-term durability of duck tape for this purpose. Running CO2 at low bubble count 24/7 rarely is a problem for the fish, and, in my experience can lead to very stable conditions and thereby algae control. Yeast & sugar works fine, just requires recharging to be part of the regular maintenance regime, I tend to clean a filter fortnightly and recharge - I run yeast & sugar successfully on a 60 cm tank. I found citric acid and bicarb to be much less long lasting than I had hoped - probably due to the modest amount of CO2 produced.

rule #1 for the refillable co2 bottle: get it from a merchant with focous on bars/drinks to avoid the stupid aquascape premium price. dont get china made pressure regulators, they are not airtight and have untight check valves so water can get into the bottle and electronics.

The F-zone ones have a finite life before the seals go, mine lasted about 1-2 years, which isnt bad, but dont expect it to last forever

Excellent video! I feel more prepared to dive into the world of CO2 tanks. For my size and set up, I'll start with a diy kind, I quite fancy the 3rd one with a metal cylinder. I'll use a splitter so I can off gas during the day, but does it matter where it off gasses?

I recently unhooked CO2 systems from my tanks. I set up nutrient rich substrate and the plants grow well without it. The longer I play with aquariums, the more I think it's all a money making scheme. Paying for carbon dioxide seems like madness.

Is it actually ok to use just basic airline tubing with the DIY CO2 system or do I need the special CO2 tube? Someone says the tube will crack coz of the acidity of CO2, someone says it's just fine to use the airline. I'm planning to try making the DIY CO2 so this would be appreciated to know. Also, the aiurline tube is not made for the higher pressure of the CO2 but I guess there is not that high pressure in the DIY CO2 system as in the pressure bottle of CO2.

I have an old Superfish Aqua 70 with a few plants and a few fish and snails, it has a LED light build in but I don't own a Co2 system yet. Do you think that buying the ingredients and a plastic bottle are the smartest option for beginners? Or do you recommend the Dennerle Starter kit? Which lasts a bit longer but is a little bit more expensive?

I would very highly NOT recommend the Fluval low pressure systems. Once the top is screwed on, it's not coming back off. I purged the system for about 72 hours to remove any internal pressure, and the cap just doesn't budge. It took 15 minutes of me throwing it into the concrete of my driveway to finally get the cap off. Of course, the entire thing is now trash, but that's what that product is to begin with, so don't waste your time and money like I did.

The chihiros ecosystem is starting to trap me like Apple products, but I like it.
