Top 5 Best LEGO Bionicle Sets From 2007 (Mahri + Barraki) 

Hahli Mahri was quite literally the poster girl for 2007, always featuring front and center in the marketing, and being the only Ga-Toa in a decidedly underwater theme.

By far my fave wave of bionicle, it was such a unique wave (and I just love underwater everythings, especially sea creatures)

Gadunka was definitely peak weirdness

So much of my childhood Bionicle obsession took place AFTER most of this stuff was long gone from shelves, but I had kept all the comic books from LEGO magazines back when I was just old enough to look at the pictures, so Mahri-era Bionicles and such took on this mythical rare quality as the coolest toys that were hard to find. My friend had a few, and they were some of our favorite toys to play with because we both knew they weren't easy to find anymore. Then I found a $10 bag of Bionicles at the thrift store, and felt like I had hit the jackpot. SO MANY epic older Bionicle sets, even if many of them were incomplete. I had a complete Axon, Ehlek, and several others, plus a complete Spinos from the Maxilos set (sadly I only had one of Maxilos's arms, but hey, got that cool Vezon mask at least) and most of the parts of Gali, albeit in pieces and with cracked lime joints, plus assorted other Barraki parts and a Piraka head. I made good use of those pieces in MOCs, even if I didn't have enough pieces to complete all of the sets. My most treasured Bionicle however was a green Bohrok given to me by my friend after he got a bunch of them from a yard sale. The green one was a duplicate and partly incomplete with one of the torso pieces being white instead of green, so he said I could have it since I liked the Bohrok and they were some of the most difficult Bionicles for a kid to obtain. My Ehlek and Axon have long since been cannibalized for MOC parts, but I still have that Bohrok and will never take him apart. That one's my favorite, wrong-colored torso piece and all :)

Does this wave really have a bad set? It's definitely bionicles peak.

I can mostly agree...while i sadly only ever got one 2007 set, that being takadox, mahri is what got me back into bionicle as a whole...fun fact takadox was actually an accidental get, i was actually wanting hauli but my parents only understood the blue one

Lesovik would definitely be in my top 5 choices! That lime faxon is just beautiful, and the little sled vehicle is super clever

My favorite year of bionicle. Awesome unique sets, awesome colors, awesome titan sets, everything was just awesome. I just really like that if you were someone that could only get a couple sets from each wave, you would be getting completely unique sets.

I remember even seeing the Mahri canisters on the shelves in a local supermarket, and to this day I regret that I just shrugged at them, since at that time, Bionicle was almost entirely faded from my life, and seeing another Toa team (I was very "loyal" to the Mata team, and/or stupid + didn't knew the lore) I just went "it's not even the original team anymore, why should I bother". And man, was I wrong, but now I have a shot at righting my wrongs and hopefully can get a few sets at a reasonable price.

Respect that #5 pick. One of my favorite Bionicle sets, period. Also, am I the only one who prefers Karzahni's mutated design over his original one?

Kalmah’s probably my favorite of the Barraki like, character-wise.

One thing that Maxillos had that no other buildable figure has to this day is shoulder articulation which is why it’s my favourite alongside Hydraxon. The terrain crawler was also one of my favourites. I just love vehicles that can fit these fairly complex figures in.

These videos are my absolute favorite to watch. They make me so nostalgic and appreciate other sets in new ways.

I actually had the orange underwater guy, those special curved parts are super cool, the marbling effect looks really nice, and his claws are such fun pieces. I’d love to make a modern one that’s a bit more crab, because giant enemy crab is badass

If I would go to 2007, Hydraxon, Hahli and Nuparu would be bought for sure. I LOVE Hydraxon and I dreamt to have it but, nope. The Barraki, I think Elex (?) was called was catching my eye. His design was awesome for me and, those giants claws with this squid blaster on it worked perfectly. And the last one set... I don't know because beside those four, the rest didin't catch my eye and heck, I didn't know abut this giant number 5 set. I have to think about my last picked set but those four I have named, are my definitive picks.

Hewkii was my first bionicle, so he already has a special place in my heart

This is my favorite year, and while my first BIONICLE sets weren’t until ‘08, I remember watching the cinematic commercials online and thinking Kongu Mahri was the coolest because my short little man had TWO GUNS. So, based on nostalgia and my personal love of appearances, my list might go: 5. Kongu Mahri 4. Ehlek 3. Hydraxon 2. Lesovikk 1. Maxilos and Spinax

Hewkii mahri is super overhated and in my opinion one of the coolest toa

my faves from each size: - defilak. dekar might have the keetorange but defilak just has the better overall appearance. one of the best matoran designs ever imo - kalmah. an unusual and imo underrated choice. nobody talks about him but one of the most fun to build and perfectly displays SQUID - hydraxon. after all these years still one of the most badass looking sets of all time. he just looks like he can win every fight

Karzahni is definitely a great choice for this list. While often easily overlooked or straight up completely forgotten, Karzahni is a really unique and weird character that feels more like a cursed object than an actual Bionicle villain. I still have him to this day, and - 2007 being my absolute favorite year in Bionicle - I remember id role play massive fights between Karzahni and all 4 of the Matoran from this year so many times. And call me a madman, b ut this years Matoran build was by far my favorite. It kept some of the goofy weird proportions of the early Matoran builds that gave them so much character, while also giving them more of a practical sense of maturity and scale that the later Matoran sets were going for (Yet lost in their oversimplification.) These Matoran simultaneously came across as both vulnerable and simplistic, yet also complicated and cunning. Previous Matoran in my opinion were too clearly meant to be goofy and precious like little Hobbits, and later Matoran were so oversimplified they didnt even feel like construction sets or Bionicles at all, and half of them looked like Grunts from Halo. (Especially 2008) The trap is an awesome piece of world building and a great extra construction piece for either game play or just extra blade parts for MOC's, and Karzahnis build itself is super unique and definitely makes a good stance next to Nocturn and Gadunka as these towering grotesque ocean creatures, especially in the sense the three of them and their more advanced takes on the Barraki design philosophy really gorgeously counteracts the opposing titans like Hydraxon, Lesoviik, or Maxilos, who respectively all reflected a more Toa-based design philosophy. All around this was such a well designed, well rounded, perfectly balanced year for Bionicle, and is by far my favorite in more ways than I could describe. 2007 was peek.

Hahli Mahri always looked unfinished to me. The lack of chest armor was a bad problem in 2007 IMO, and the complete lack of lime on her chest really hurts the color blocking. A lime armor piece would have been perfect. Also, I'm pretty sure the initial thread where the Mutated Brutaka MoC and box design were posted said it was fake, like right there in the original post. IIRC it was spoiler marked at the bottom, but the guy who made and posted it said it was fake right in the same post.

2007 is my favorite year for G1. Not just for the sets, but also for the story. The stakes were higher than ever and the villains of the Year, the Barraki were (I feel) an antagonistic force that was truly capable of rivaling Makuta himself. If I could only purchase 5 sets from this year, I'd have to choose... 1. Matoro 2. Hydraxon 3. Pridak 4. Nocturn 5. Karzahni
