Guppies 9:46 PS: feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, I know very little about brackish water tanks, just want something to be able to refer to, as the visuals of the video are too much focused on the guy and not enough b-roll xD
I love brackish setups!!! And as far as mudskippers go... Those are little aliens that have been sent here to steal our hearts!!!😍❤️ Thanks for all the information and Great video!!
I don’t know what it is that I love so much about brackish tanks. I had a gsp in brackish for a while before moving them into full marine but man I’ve been thinking a lot about setting up an archer tank in our bedroom lately.
@@rac_godly4100 that's not a dumb question. They can live very well in brackish water but I don't have experience to tell you about marine tanks. Many people told me about mollys in marine tanks. They told me "they can live some months or about a year, not two" so I wouldn't let them have to face this environment. Hope the information could be useful.
@@carlosr1461 so i bought some salt yesterday and put it in my aquarium but before that i got my 2 f8 puffer fish and my snowflake eel aka indian mud moray eel so today i drip acclimated them for 1 hour and 30 min the salt is at 1.0021-1.0024
Thanks so much for making this video!! I've always wanted to breed Nerite snails, but when I heard they had to be kept in brackish water, I thought I'd never get the hang of it. Now I'm less worried about salt ratios and whatnot, and I think I might add some Guppies to the Nerite tank before I convert it to brackish. Thanks again!
Brackish is definitely fun. Had 2 Green spotted puffers. Dope video as always. And hands down out of all the fish keepers I follow your fish room is the best! 🔥🔥 Great job
I also have a green spot puffer with Knight gobies! Glad you addressed your water change methods there at the end because that's how I too have been doing it! My GSPs belly turns black every time I do a water change tho so I thought maybe I was going about it wrong! I have had him/her for over a year but just trans to brackish water 3 months ago and I was very nervous about it but all has gone well thus far! So as you said don't be scared people give it a go! I now wanna learn more about those blemies! TC all!
Tazawa tanks, I love brackish fish as well. You made an interesting statement about not needing to keep salinity stable. I have always wondered, since salinity in brackish environments changes with the seasons, if the truly brackish fish wouldn’t live longer if we changed up there salinity from time to time. More freshwater during the rainy seasons and more salt during the dry. We tend to think that stability is less stressful, however, for brackish fish maybe stable is harder for their bodies to maintain long term? An experiment worth trying with the true brackish species.
Are pea puffers also a brackish water fish? I have a tank with a knite goby, 4 pea puffers and I put my excess female pregnant guppies in there because I have way too many. I guess i could transition it to a brackish tank? I also put my pond snails from my betta tank. Will the salinity kill the snails? My puffers prefer to eat live snails and live blood worms. I have Java ferns and water sprite in there - it’s a dirt capped with sand tank - will my plants die? Thank you for all you do and teach me!❤
Hello, I recently set up two brackish tanks, a 10g and a 55g. The ten has two mollies and three guppies. Cycling normally. The 55g consists of plants, 4 Sailfin Mollies and a Knight Goby, along with a couple Nerites. This tank is consistently >.50ppm NH3, .25 Nitrite and ambient 5ppm nitrates, all × one week. Quite a few plants. I also purchased an API Master freshwater test kit. My question is A) Is this product affected by brackish conditions? B) Is it possible I have ambient nitrites in my source as well? I live in a dairy state.
I had a beaytiful brackish setup with a Green Scat,3 Knight Gobies,an Archer fish and both species of Monos.......the Monos got huge!! Great video stay safe!!
Hey zenzo if i live near a brackish estuary (i think im saying it right?) Can i collect brackish water from it if the ammonia nitrates and the like are low? Also where did you get the indian mudskippers?
I don’t know why I’ve had figure 8’s and drip acclimated them into brackish and are sensitive. My green spotted puffers are not as sensitive I got baby puffers from fresh drip acclimated them in my reef tank have been good for 9 months now.
Nice 👍 I have a question can you convert a figure 8 puffer to full salt water like the green spotted puffers? I saw a video on one I just want to make sure it is safe. Also I have my figure 8 in freshwater it’s still a baby but I want to start acclimating him in brackish water should I do it slowly or all at once?
Yeah I have done it, I just used a plastic fish cage and bumped up the salt level little by little so as not to stress the fish once they introduced to a marine environment.
I’d keep guppies to breed and let my puffers eat the fry it’s a renewable food source and keeps the hunters in the tank with a little bit of natural behaviors oftentimes they are denied of.
Thanks for taking some of the pressure off of getting salinity right! I've had a fresh water tank for years and really want a brackish crab tank with some fishmates but salt can get intimidating. Do male guppies have a high bioload? I have mollies in my freshwater tank and they make a lot of babies and a lot of poop. Hoping male guppies and gobis are a lot less work and can live peacefully with Fiddler Crabs and some Ghost Shrimp. Any further advice is appreciated. Thanks for this video!
Guppies aren't called "the millions fish" for nothing. If you're worried about lots of babies they're not a good option unless you only get males or only get females.
@@jeremyfrost2636 I ended up getting male endlers and bumble bee gobies in a brackish tank. It's been super successful with no fatalities. I also had ghost shrimp in there for a year.
It’s extremely refreshing to see a popular fish RU-vidr that delves into our brackish water world. A few points about the video. I think it’s important to distinguish between the true brackish fish and those fish that merely find their way into estuaries and mangroves during the rainy season. The later type are really freshwater fish that may live In brackish water in an aquarium setting. However, the salt level and the changes in salinity are much more of a problem with these types of fish. So fishes like the wrestling halfbeaks, the needle nose or rocket gar, guppies, horse faced loaches and most bumblebee gobies are all fish that do not tolerate a wide range of salinity and really only thrive at a SG of 1.005. Other fish like the Monos (Atlantic and Pacific), Scats, Archerfish, Mollies, and most pufferfish will tolerate a wide range of salinity from freshwater 1.000 to full marine at 1.025. I personally collect most of my brackish fish down here in South Florida and they can thrive at just about any level from full fresh to marine. Thanks the the great vids, as always. Cheers. 👌🏽
Xavier, right on man. Too many of the “brackish” fish being sold in the hobby are doomed to fail in a permanent brackish set up. Trying to source long term residents (that aren’t monster fish ) is actually difficult and limiting. The best thing to do I pick one fish and study to see what its long term requirements are. If you can then find tank makes that can live the same then good. I do love brackish though. I have three set ups right now.
Hi Tazawa, thanks for the cool video, how do the diseases differ from fresh water to brackish water systems, my guppies have an internal parasite issue i cannot get any proper medication for them during this lockdown they are very skinny and I have moved them into a separate tub, i even tried to treat them with a cat de-wormer as the active ingredient in most animal de-wormers isPraziquantel but i was not sure the ratio of mg to ml, however Seachem paraguard comes highly recommended as a medication i would like to know from you have you used seachem paragaurd at all and i would love to see another video on how to treat your aquariums, thank you. Keep well.
I have a 20 gallon tall tank with harlequin rasboras, otocinclus catfish, cherry shrimp, and mystery snails and I am thinking about moving them to the 30 gallon half moon tank. I am planning on making the 20 gallon tall tank into a brackish water tank what are some good stock for a 20 gallon tall tank?
Are we able to transform a tank into brackish water.? I have a tank with guppies, amano shrimp, cherry shrimp, ghost shrimp, and blue crayfish. From what i gather, they all can live in brackish water. But I've had them always in freshwater. Any feedback is much appreciated.!
I am set up for my Knight Goby. I want to administer some API Allcure, but should I wait until he is acclimatized to his temporary tank, or can I treat immediately?
I started googling for brackish tanks because I am interested in keeping a supply of nerite snails which I have heard will only hatch in brackish waters. You didn't mention them in your video, so I'm wondering if you have had any experience with them and hatching their spawn. I love my little nerites, and I would like to keep them going without having to buy new stock when they die.
To expand...I have a tank that is pretty constantly exposed to natural sunlight even though it's more than 8 feet from the nearest window. Nerites are my only algae control for this tank. Wouldn't dream of introducing the Malaysian Trumpets from my other tank since they are so prolific.
I have MTS in every tank. I actually like having them. I also have several nerite snails in multiple tanks. I do have one in my Indian mudskipper tank. I don't have any in the other brackish tanks because of puffers. I have not tried breeding them yet. Maybe soon?
I kept some Sailfins in a brackish years ago, with some Bumblebee Gobies. Saw some Knight Gobies yesterday. I have been debating which way to go with my next tank, and I'm really leaning brackish right now. Which fish and invertebrates go best with them?
With the Knight gobies? Nothing that they can eat. Something large/tough enough to be left alone by them. As far as invertebrates, some brackish crabs would be cool (just make sure to have land area).
Stupid question: I have a brackish tank with bumblebee gobies, figure 8 puffers, and black mollies. My “stupid question” is, what master test kit do I use salt or fresh? I have both not quite sure
I freaking love Molly’s females more because. I had this wonder full dust gold molly I named her princess because she acted like the queen of the tank. She was so sweet and had the most personality of any fish I had before. We have a male red wag sword tail that somehow got her pregnant which I’m very confused by. But I never realized she was until it was to late. Even though I could blame my self I had these 3 yellow labs in the same tank as her with a chocolate chiclid. When she finish giving birth they all had a feast and when I realized it it was to late all the baby’s were gone. About a month later we got her a panda molly originally named prince, the sudden name change is because he killed the other female molly that was in the same bag as him. So we named him syco. Anyways the second we added syco to the tank he went right to her and breed with her instantly. But this is when everything went wrong. We originally suffered with ich in our tank. Which is why 2 of our yellow labs died and our ballon mollies. So when she was about 3 weeks in to her pregnancy she got it. I just shrugged it off at first but then it got worst. So we quickly went to the pet store the next day and got the medicine. But when we put it in it was to late. She tucked her self under a rock and passed away. But happy part first. She had 5 baby’s the day before and um 😐 the alll got eaten by accident by our common Pleco. They were hiding under her food and well 💀. And that’s the story about my favorite molly I have ever kept and how it changed me as a fish keeper.
Tazawa- if you haven't already, I highly recommend checking out @ultimatedreamfish on Instagram. The newest contributor there is Jeff Rapps, former owner of Tangled up in cichlids. There are several guys contributing there now, and one of the original guys has an amazing collection of rare brackish fish! Stuff I never knew existed. For anyone else who reads this there are all sorts of other fish there as well, including a ton of beautiful US native fish I had never seen.
Im torn and need advice. I've been a fishkeeper for a year now and I have a 40 gallon tank i am about to setup. I am contemplating it being a brackish tank and keeping a puffer or keeping a pair of convicts as a freshwater tank. help?
@Christopher Walker thanks for the input. how do you think a group of three would do with a 40 gallon water change every 3 days? and would they be fine alone if i feed shrimp and snails?
Do you only use rodi water and add the fritz? This is why I'm stopping my marine and considering brackish. I travel too much and can't trust someone to do top offs and mix salt for me. I'm without an rodi unit to make my own and lug it back and forth from the petstore, so using tap water would be ideal for me. Thank you for your time, sir
I still get false positive NH3 results on my two brackish tanks. However, the results more resemble negative on the salt chart. I calibrated on both pure distilled water and brackish distilled water. I got a negative (freshwater chart) on the plain distilled, but the result on the distilled+brackish looked more like 0.25ppm on the freshwater chart, negative on the saltwater chart. I use the API freshwater master test kit. I even talked c the people at API and they also said to go by the freshwater chart with a brackish tank. Both tanks are fully cycled. NH3 "negative" NO2 negative, NO3 around 30pm in my 10g, 0 in my 55g because of live sand.
Make sure to learn about the species you plan on keeping, including water parameters and compatibility with other fish. Also, make sure to have some snails on hand to feed a few times per week (or other hard foods, depending on the species).
My bumblebee gobies won’t eat anything apart from frozen bloodworm it has to be bright red otherwise they won’t eat it. I even have to target feed them sometimes.
Mine did great on live or frozen Brine Shrimp, Tubifex, Blackworms and frozen Bloodworms. I kept them in fresh, but they lit up when I put them into brackish. They did great but were a little nippy.
What makes a Figure 8 Puffer suddenly start swimming in circles, running into things, half inflating and generally acting drunk?? Then he'll snap out of it as suddenly as it comes on. Also, he's in a well furnished and planted tank, but he paces constantly. Have you experienced this odd behavior in your pufferfish?
@@noname-br5lo Well, it's been a while now without any further seizures or whatever. He is eating well but doing a lot of pacing. I try to keep ghost shrimp and snails on hand to keep life interesting for him. The tank is really busy and I'm contemplating paring down on a lot of Livebearers, esp guppies and mollies. They aren't aggressive, just dirty. I'd like to keep it to more unusual fish like Indian Glassfish, my Knight Goby and of course "Pink", my puffer.
I've never done brackish. I've always been scared that I would royally screw it up..... and brackish fish are pretty expensive in my city.... maybe some day. I do really like them.
I posted a video of my mud skipper tank on RU-vid search 180gal mud skipper tank. Not a great video just posted it so u could check it out. Let me know what u think
EASIEST WAY IS 2 BUCKETS OF SALTWATER IN A 10 BUCKET TANK IF YIU KEEP SALTWATER YIU CAN ADD THE SAME RATIO VIA WATER CHANGES - THINK FARM GRADE NEUTRALISING BACTERIA FROM FRESHWATER SUPPLIES
You have a reef tank...you probably know a lot about salt. Zenzo's fish look good, though, so maybe what he does is okay. I have literally done the same thing when using aquarium salt to treat for stress and illnesses, and so far it hasn't been a problem. Maybe I'm lucky 😅
@@melissalong3858 Aquariam salt is completely different than reef salt! Just dumping reef salt is not a good idea. Depending on what salt it is, it needs up to 24 hours to fully dissolve.
