Calcium is a vital mineral found in bones and teeth, providing structural support and strength. It is the most abundant mineral in the body and is crucial for bone health, muscle contraction, nerve transmission, blood clotting, and cellular signaling. Adequate calcium intake is essential for overall health and prevention of conditions like osteoporosis and muscle disorders. Five calcium-rich foods include dairy products like milk, yogurt, and cheese, leafy green vegetables like kale, collard greens, turnip greens, and spinach, sardines and canned salmon (with bones), fortified foods like orange juice, plant-based milk alternatives, and breakfast cereals, and tofu made with calcium sulfate.
Dairy products like milk, yogurt, and cheese are excellent sources of calcium, with low-fat or fat-free varieties available. Leafy green vegetables like kale, collard greens, turnip greens, and spinach are packed with calcium, with one cup of cooked spinach containing approximately 240 mg of calcium. Fortified foods like orange juice, plant-based milk alternatives, and breakfast cereals also contain calcium. Tofu made with calcium sulfate is a good plant-based source of calcium, with a 3.5-ounce serving providing around 350-750 mg of calcium.
