This week, on Tactical Rifleman, we are going to cover Karl’s favorite 5 Rifle Drills for New Shooters. Yes, there are hundreds of great drills out there. Yes, you need to practice all your critical skills, such as transitions, malfunctions, and speed reloads. However, first and foremost, new shooters need to develop muscle memory. That takes thousands (7-9k) of repetitions of the same CORRECT movements and actions.
You’ll see that each of these drills builds on the drill(s) before it; so that you are continuing to push those said movements and actions into your subconscious mind. It’s like driving… the first few months, you had to think about brakes and turn signals. Now, you just drive subconsciously. That frees up the conscious mind to focus on signs, signals, and other drivers. Likewise, you need to push all these basic shooting skills into your subconscious mind. That frees up the conscious mind to focus on “Is it a Threat” and “Is it a Threat that warrants Deadly Force?”
Master these drills, through lots of repetition of each. If your unit doesn’t have that much ammo, then start with dry firing, and wrap up with live fire. Once, you have mastered them, then add all your critical skills to these drills:
Add Transition to Pistol Drills, every time your rifle runs dry or malfunctions
Add Tactical & Speed Reloads
Add Turning & Moving Drills, to these drills
Use Dummy Rounds, to induce Malfunctions during these drills.
Once you have mastered these five drills; we’ll give you plenty of other great shooting drills to work on. When you are ready to test; use the timed Critical Task Evaluations (CTEs) to see if you make the standard. If you don’t know them, we are going to cover them in an upcoming video, on Tactical Rifleman.
Again, we know there are tons of other great rifle drills out there. I know all the Internet Ninjas are gonna start screaming how “Their Drill is Better” or how we “Obviously don’t know how to Shoot.” Yep, you guys are awesome. However, these are still Karl’s Top-5 Combat Drills for New Shooters. Thanks for watching. Strength & Honor, TR.

Hello Karl, another AWESOME video man. You have taught me/us so many cool training drills I appreciate you giving me these tools to put into my tool box. Unfortunately I don’t get to all of the drills I have been exposed to in your channel but the ones I have watched are all tucked away in my head. Just being exposed to things can help a Human in a time of need. Again I appreciate it and thank you for all the lessons.....

hejdu13337 You should move to America, my friend. I have a range in my backyard, and I practice at least 3 days a week. Our government is getting excited about trying to take away our guns. Ain't gonna happen... There's an average of 3 guns per household here. Our constitution requires us to own firearms, just incase a "tyrannical government" issue should arise. Our forefathers knew that this day would come. God bless America!!!

I've been to a few different gun/shoot schools. You can learn something from any one of them and benefit from both "new stuff" and from the common-threads they all present. I admire and appreciate the "delivery" that this instructor provides. Seems to stress the purpose and imperatives of each skill-set being taught and puts the student in a real-world mindset during the lesson. Demonstrates very well w/o attempting to showcase his own skill. Great instructor, great teaching-method. The "finished product", i.e., "the student" is always a reflection of a good instructor. His instructor pride is very obvious.

@TargetAcquisition

We ran the same drills in the Marines, except for the "zipper drill". We did something similar when firing on burst or using crew serve weapons. Placing double taps close together is because it inflicts more trauma to the same area. Especially when wearing plates or body armor. 1st round may not penetrate but the 2nd would, if placed closely. Same goes for a foe without armor. If the first round hits the chest bone and a second one hits the same area, it'll be more painful and traumatizing. The target may not be fully exposed, that first round may glance off a rib, hit their hand or the weapon. That first round is to shock them and clear the way. The purpose of trying to keyhole the shots is because, in a live situation, those shots will be spread out due to adrenalin. Aim small, miss small, and practice how you play. Practicing to shift and spread those rounds out may result in a missed shot.

That's why you do drills and then put them together in scenario-based exercises, which change each time. These can be in military training or even 2-gun matches. You have different scenarios of who must be and must not be shot, perhaps intel you have to get, etc. You have to assess and decide, real time what tactic to employ and when.

Table 3 is an excellent marine corps day time carbine shoot similar to this one. You can also run table 4 which is the exact same course of fire, only it's ran at night with PEQ 16's and PVS 14's. Within 25 meters, I usually use the 400 meter stadia line on my four power RCO acog in order to get fairly accurate shots.

THANK YOU for not holding the rifle like a tacti-tard, like all these other wanna-be hotshots on youtube. Thank you for firing correctly.

It say about 70% of the techniques and training can be done without rounds and found its a great way to save some $$ while learning proper footing, grip, and all around comfortably with the drill itself before doing the complete drill on a range/course. OK, but the distance to the target... I know everybody wants to do CQB and DA, but go 5/10/15/20/25m, mark the spot on the target and train accuracy/speed/muscle memory. Lot of guys shoot fast, but if you put them with iron sight 25m from a target after doing 25 pushups they have a problem to hit a torso, but if you shorter the distance to 3m they starting to hit the target.... I do not deny this video, It's only my opinion. Regards.

These are BASIC skills development drills. In my opinion you shouldn't increase distance or add physical stressors (push ups) until a shooter has mastered the basics... or performs them well and on demand. Got to start and evaluate somewhere... and this is how you do it.

from one of his replies: "Everyone keeps asking about my rifle... AR Rifles are like Legos for Guys. This particular rifle is made from a pile of AR parts that I had laying in my workshop. It is a shorty LaRue Upper (Yes, I have the Tax Stamp), with a Timmey Trigger stuck in the lower. I run AAC brakes on all my guns, so my Suppressors (Silencers) fit. Again, nothing fancy, just a pile of spare parts squished together. Optics vary on what class I'm teaching, but it usually has a Aimpoint on it. Thanks for watching, TR. "

Just to subscribe: I don't want to be "one of those guys," but you need to do your research and pay attention to the video better. One of the five drills Karl was demonstrating was the "'Failure Drill" (not the "Zipper Drill"), which was two to the chest, and one to the head in order to "turn off the switch." It's called the failure drill because if your two to the chest doesn't finish the bad guy, you need to put one through his melon to finish him off. The drill was original referred to as the "Mozambique Drill" because some famous mercenary working in Mozambique at the time had the aforementioned scenario happen to him. He allegedly shot the guy twice in the chest, and the Mozambique citizen looked at him. Thus, he transitioned his weapon to the guy's brain housing group and put him down for good. There. Respectful rebuttal submitted.

You could put up a video with the true answers of the most important questions of the universe and there will still be an asshat or two that dislike it. Weird.

Out of all the people making videos that teach what they more than likely learned in a video game, I'm glad I didnt give up and found this one. Very comprehensive, educational, and the hands on is awesome brother. Good job. Hope you made a handgun one too bro!

Great video, thank you. The great thing about this is if you have a dry fire system you can practice with your muscle memory at home and the app shows you your shot placement. I cannot get to the range as often as I wish .

OK, Challenge Accepted! I combined all your drills and a malfunction drill, then shot it, videoed it and uploaded the video- including showing my targets. Thanks for the great content and the inspiration!!! I think I did well, and i'm happy with the results, but the video also showed me things I need to improve on, so next time I go to the range, I'll be better than I was the time before. Get of the couch and go train!

Thanks for talking about the importance of spreading that hammered pair across the chest. For years I was taught getting those rounds inside of 1" I learned from a ranger buddy that's not always what you want.
