Thank you all for your support of this channel. The response to this video has been phenomenal! And yes, I now know how to pronounce “cloche” properly. 😂
I’m glad you knew how to pronounce it - I had to look it up! I love learning new things about words… And I love people who don’t deny it if they make a mistake! Thanks!
Respect on all your good finds. As a French speaker I can confirm that for your future videos it is simply “klohsh” cloche is the word for “bell” in French. Like the kind that rings as well. Cloché means “clogged” as in a drain
Another thing to get is the mesh laundry bags. They are a pretty large size. I use them over my blueberry and raspberry plants , Drape it over a frame of some sort (like a wood frame or a tomato cage) to protect your fruit from being eaten by the birds. Easy to pull up or off, doesn’t impede sunlight and works great
I use those to protect my plants from the dreaded Japanese beetles. 🪲 I actually cut them to make a “sheet” so I can just lay them on the plants. Works great!
Thank you for sharing this! Japanese beetles are a disaster for my young apple trees! Got to get some milky spore for the orchard & blueberry area. Thanks again!
The wire trash baskets can also be placed in the planting hole to help prevent moles or other underground critters from getting to your plants roots. Roots can still grow through rhe wire mesh.
So… admittedly I am quite new to vegetable gardening, been researching lots of hacks as of late. Would the basket (buried) work for potatoes? Just pull it up and shake the dirt out… for easy harvesting?
Good ideas. I used the $$ laundry baskets, which are pretty flimsy for holding actual clothing, over my squash and brassicas. The deer and the rabbits left my plants alone and the neighbours had lots of interesting ideas about what I was doing with laundry baskets all over my front yard. 😂 Loved it!
I get shower caps from hotels…my friends who travel know to grab them for me. For plant tags I cut along the length of yogurt and cottage cheese containers and make them into strips. I cut the bottoms of milk jugs or use big clear spinach or lettuce containers for mini greenhouses.
Another thing that works is the big plastic container that those cheese puffballs come in. They're taller than the cloches and have a nice wide opening.
I can’t believe how many people are complaining about how you pronounce or spell a word!! I think we all understood what he was talking about! Great job! I love your ideas!
I liked the video until cloch-é. Now… I absolutely love it. The first time I saw that word I had to Google the pronunciation. That’s such a difficult word to wrap your head around and I was an English major. You made me feel a lot better.
At least he now learned how to pronounce the word properly! 😊 I have always wondered why youtubers don't check how to pronounce words that they don't know before they make a video going out to thousands of people. Some young kids may be watching the videos and then learn how to pronounce the word incorrectly.
Great tips! I like the cloche and wire basket ideas for protecting seedlings and the shower caps for wintersowing (it's better than using plastic wrap). I'll be visiting my Dollar Tree for these items and check out the seeds too! TFS!
Good ideas. A suggestion on making holes - get a cheap soldering iron to make the holes. Depending on the type of plastic, it can shatter and make not so nice holes. I had that happen to me, so now I use a soldering iron.
I'm always looking for something to protect my tulip bulbs (in pots) from squirrels. Wire waste baskets will be perfect! Also, the hot point of a glue gun will melt a hole in plastic.
You gave me a "duh" moment!🤦🏻♀️ I got several of those baskets after seeing them used for plant protection on another channel, and I've also been wanting something to sift some rocky soil . THANK YOU for saving me the effort and expense of getting a mesh frame to do the job. It's such an obvious thing, and yet it never entered my brain.😄
I should have read the comments before I left mine, but that's mostly what I use that can for it for. It's amazing for sifting! The mesh slowly begins to rip along the top, but I get a full season use out of it.
I just discovered the dollar tree clotched this year. They finally are carrying them at my store. But just like you are use water jugs too. It’s nice that we have choices.
Dollar Tree also has small black wire pencil holders (in the school supply section) that look exactly like the black wire trash cans. Those are good to put over individual small plants with a couple of garden staples and they will keep squirrels and rabbits off your plants when they are tiny or small.
@@TinySpock Yes but buyer beware: You have to buy a certain quantity of some of their items. So, if you only needed one of something, their website may not work out.
I love love love your suggestions for gardening on the cheap. Thank you! May I help with the first item? It's pronounce like "clothes" but with an "-sh" at the end. You are absolutely correct that french sometimes pronounces an "e" like "-ay" but you will know when it's pronounced that way because there is an accent egout over the "e". It's a small "back slash"- /. Thank you for all your suggestions!
For the showercap hack I prefer to use a rubberband, which can also be aquired at dollar tree. Then you can remove them more easily and the moisture wont affect the adhesion of the tape.
I use the bottle shake method for seeding, & fertilizer. I use empty Parmesan cheese container and or an empty container from large bottle gravy powder. Or spice container. All come with shaker type tops, so do not require burning holes in plastic (yuck) & the cost is nothing from already used/discarded containers. The clothe covers are Awesome‼️. I use the wire baskets over plants, however I’ve cut out the bottom of that wire grid-mesh trash can so plants can grow tall, they remain protected, and unrestricted. Inside the upside down wire waste basket . Keep up the good work. 👍
For the bell cloches, I have used shish kabobs to anchor the jars down. The cloche has pre-drilled holes on the lip. I just push the skewers through those little holes, and the cloche will remain in place even during a windstorm. This has worked fine in my raised beds even during late February, here in Washington state. I should have fresh lettuce and spinach in another few weeks.
I bet my ground squirrels would just dig under anything. I love them but I hate them too! not looking forward to having even the native plants do well here cuz last year the squirrels and chipmunks ate almost all the sprouts and then it was so dry here. Gardening sucks sometimes when its always fighting someone or the weather. you are very clever!
great gardening tips going to use my shower caps and also purchase a garden cloche to germinate seeds makes a great greenhouse effect!!! I am a senior and i have been gardening since age 20 and still loving it!
Thank you! These are such great ideas and the waste basket is much more convenient than chicken wire! I’m definitely making a dollar tree run this weekend!
As Brian commented to my milk jug cloche suggestion, that's a wintertime thing! When the weather warmed up, we took them off. We're zone 7b. Actually we had a late hard freeze in March, I had to quickly put them back on for a couple days. You can't leave them on permanently or the plants would get cooked. It's just for freeze protection.
The wire waste basket also works very well for a compost/dirt sifter. It only lasts about one season for that use, eventually tears along the top, but it's my favorite thing for that purpose.
Those "Cloche's" are really nice. I just might get me a few. BUT, I DO not END UP USING TOO MANY POTS THAT ARE THE MEDIUM SIZES JUST LIKE THAT BIG POT THAT IS SHOWN AT THE 5:22 MARK HERE. I DO HAVE A SMALL GREENHOUSE, SO,L THAT IS WHERE i WILL BE ABLE TO SHOW YOU WHERE MY GREENHOUSE IS EITHER DOING good, OR MAYBE not DOING GOOD.
I wish all you RU-vidrs would quit talking about dollar tree like it's so special. They've changed. I wanted a cheap mop cause when I was done with the job, it was going to be trash. Well, it's $1.25 for the mop, + $1.25 for the handle. They were quite upset that I didn't want the handle, I have plenty. They now have 2 aisles of $3 & $5 stuff. Don't have a lot of food anymore, no cupcake liners, no theater box candy, - I miss jujubes & Good and Plenty. Don't have much in way of thr aluminium throw away bakeware. And the stuff that is the same in Family Dollar and Dollar general is actually cheaper at those 2 stores.
Love those black baskets. They really work well to protect my tomato seedlings from the myriad of squirrels that dig in my yard. Once the roots are established and the plants grow taller I just take them off and store.
Dude! I've been trying to get started growing some stuff, but something WAS eating and/or messing up everything I was able to get started! I was going to buy some chicken wire or something, but that wire bin hack is genius! Thanks!
I've been on the look out for those at DT but still no luck. I find that my local DT locations never seem to get things I see others finding on RU-vid.
I used the wire waste basket to protect my carrisa holly from the rabbits this winter. When all of the other vegetation goes dormant, my holly has been eaten up in the past. Not this year 😊
I use those little caged waste baskets to protect my plants from gophers. For some reason they like my yard more than my neighbors yard, so I dig a hole enough for it to fit in, fill with soil and fertilizer and put my plant in. Last year I wasn't able to plant my garden and at the end of summer when I was able to go out side, a gopher had tunneled up along the side of it, but didn't bite into the wire. I'm sure they could, but for some reason, they didn't. I've already bought some for this year's garden that I can't wait to start. I'm getting some cattle panels delivered this week so I can make some arches. I missed my garden so much.
@@seanaames6855Tractor Supply delivered them to me. I signed up for their reward membership in the store, I think it's called Neighbors or something like that. Every three months they send you four vouchers, two are for free delivery and the other two are for free trailer rentals. It's one of the best reward programs I've signed up for and I'm signed up to many in a lot of different stores. I loved having that perk from there because I only have an SUV and I'd never be able to have gotten them. This year I'm setting them up.
I used my glue gun first and it cracked the pot, so I ordered a soldering iron from Amazon. A very good investment. Wish I'd tried that first. Not only did I break the pot, but I ended up getting melted plastic all up inside the tip and had to dig it out with a paper clip. Doesn't seem to work as well now either. So I lost the pot and the glue gun. BUMMER 😕
Thanks for the warning. I had planned to use a glue gun, but thanks to your timely warning, I will dig out the soldering iron. Ĝod bless you for sharing.
My IPhone updated and I lost following your site. I am delighted to rejoin. I was hit very hard with fungus gnats. I thought I did everything right and my seedlings were wiped out. I felt like a burglar came in my home. My mother was a great gardener she’d cook her soil before planting. She dealt with cutworms. She was dealing with soil planting and more space than my patio garden. I am starting my patio garden late because I have been I’ll. My MS has been unkind. For me it’s been a blessing. I found your site again. I have rejoined and look forward to what your doing. Thank for your guidance and bless you. On I am in zone 8 in N.C. We had a lot of rain. -Athompson
@@briandaniels4 I am waiting for my order of bags and mosquito bits. The mosquitoes ravaged my seedlings and I noticed the larvae in my bag soil I got. I tend to use my microscope for testing my soil. The fugus gnat larvae is very aggressive. I have to treat my soil & my seedling soil too. I don’t understand why this is such a soil pandemic these past years. I would appreciate your take on this situation. I don’t want to kill the good parts of the soil. Thank you 🙏
I've bought seeds from the dollar tree ,but they never grew & Brilliant ideas cause I got chickens that rob seeds that I plant that is so frustrating! I like these ideas
I found the plant tags to be useless when you write on them with permanent marker it comes off. I resorted to masking tape and covering them with plastic. The cloches are great, but secure them, or they will be all over your neighborhood. Yeah, gardening is fun
Brian, you are a man after my own heart! Last year I discovered those wire wastepaper baskets (at least, I think that's what they are!) like the ones you're showing in tip #5, and thought, "H'mm. For $1.25, these are a whole heap cheaper than buying pre-made poultry mesh cloches for anywhere from $17 to $30-something apiece, and a darned sight easier than trying to produce my own." *And* my local Dollar Tree had them in black, even last year (but that might vary from store to store?) As it happened, last night we were out and about and picked up five of those, in white. I may have to go back today and get some more, only in black. Last year we thought a few this year, a few more next year...and every year...until we have plenty of them to protect seedlings. We also picked up some of those cloches last gardening season, had the best of intentions to protect plants from early and late frosts; life interfered and the garden suffered and those cloches languished in the back seat of the car, and turned a yellow-y color. I suppose those aren't going to be much good for daytime use but should still keep plants a tad warmer on very chilly nights? Anyone else viewing and commenting: do you have input on this?
I love these baskets and have about 25. I was able to get them before the prices went up to $1.25. I would enjoy having the pretty cloches but you are right that the prices are just way out of line. The ones that I really like are in the $35 range so that's not going to happen 🥲. I would not worry about the color of the cloche. They may not be transparent with the yellow color but they will still let light in. Check them with a flashlight from the inside just to be sure. If light is coming out than light will be going in.
@@leeluv96That's an idea! I'll have to ask himself whether he has any headlight lens restorer; I know he had some at one point. But I'm wondering about this, because headlight lens restorer is used to "grind" away the roughened surface of the lens which occurs during normal driving, all sorts of weather, and so on: it's on the surface. Because the cloches are so much thinner, and the color change may go all the way through, I'll have to experiment on one small area of just one cloche. Carefully. Thank you again! 😊
Those showercaps have multiple uses! I cover my bowls filled with dough - multiple uses ,no dry spots & mini humidifier. My husband drinks way too much soda so i save the 2L bottles to cover , just pop holes in it
I am so glad I clicked on your video! I’ve been trying to figure out what to do about the squirrels because my backyard is a squirrel Haven, and the wastebasket idea is genius!
I like to winter sow my veggies also. I didn't know dollar tree had bell cloche I will definitely try to get some of those and the water bottles too, great hacks! Thanks! Much Love and Blessings
I actually went to Dollar Tree today and stocked up on a lot of the things you recommended! Saved me a ton of money. Instead of a BPA free bottle, I'll use an empty bottle from my recycling! I couldnt find the waste baskets in black but I got them in white! Thanks for this video :)
I use those glass punch bowls that I can find in donation stores, flea markets, etc. They are cheap and work well and I can store and use them again and again.
Only if you use fertilizer that contain salts, or un-rinsed coconut coir. I bottom water often, especially fancier house plants, that hate water on leaves. I put bottle cap to make an air gap, so they can self prune roots, like a Kratkey or self watering container system. 👍
Always bottom watering isn’t recommended but watering from the top every once in awhile will allow the soil to be flushed will keeping the balance in check.
Friend of mine had trouble with the mini greenhouse idea for moisture sensitive herb..really depends on the temp of the area you plan on using and the herbs ability to withstand too much build up causes wilting ..
Awesome ideas!!! (New subscriber.) How wonderful to find a DIY channel that gives practical ideas with a calm soothing voice. It was a pleasure to watch this video. Looking forward to more!
That’s a good idea about the waste basket! How clever. A couple years ago the deer 🦌 have gotten a hold of my vegetables. This is good for those who live by the woods!
