Great video! I noticed that pruning off the stems that were below the area where they started to fall down, and stems that weren't getting a lot of sun triggered flower bud growth!
My gift to you (9 min of your life back): 1. Don't plant new cuttings w/ established plants 2. Don't mix varieties in the same pot 3. Don't over plant (crowd) in the same pot 4. Don't over prune (esp. when fruiting) 5. Allow for plenty of room between planting posts
Thanks for sharing your knowledge! I too have seen others suggesting trimming the branches as a way to provoke fruit bearing. I just planted my first dragon fruit branch that was gifted to me and I'm glad that I saw your video.
@@Honestandtruth Hello. If your location is in the northern hemisphere then flowering and fruiting is from March to November. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching. 👍😊👍 Cheers
What a lovely garden! I really love the video. I just started my dragon fruit journey here in Kenya🇰🇪 and I really do appreciate these tips. Good work👍
Hello. I'm glad to hear from someone from Kenya. Greetings from San Diego, California 😊 Best wishes on your dragon fruit plants. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching. 👍😊👍 Cheers
I bought a potted dragon fruit knowing nothing about it and now I know its way overcrowded as it has dozens of plants in it 😂 one had fallen out and I replanted it on its own and it’s growing so fast! Thank you for all the helpful information!
Thank you very much for your tips and showing your garden! It's like heaven! I just told my husband if I ever move again I would like to live in one like yours! Can't imagine just going out and picking my own fruits, amazing fruits!
Hello. You are welcome. If you plant something there will be a chance that you will harvest something. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching. 👍😊👍 Cheers.
Thank you for the well presented, useful information and especially the link for identification of different varieties. I live in Australia and am now pretty sure what I am growing is the Vietnamese Jaina. I'm transplanting it today into a pot with a central post, here's hoping it neither breaks nor I get spiked to death in the process. Lesson number 1 learned, plant dragonfruit immediately into its permanent position, not leave it to grow prostrate for 3 years. Happy New Year to you.
Been there done that. But i still get them going in their own pot first. Once roots have formed and before any major growth I settle them in their home pot.
This video was very helpful. I'm going to add this video to my favorites. I also liked your pepper plant. You should do a video on planting those too! Keep planting my friend.
:)) Mahalo for showing us by using your own. But yours look pretty good, even so! Looks like a jungle in there now. Much aloha to you and your wonderful plants.
thank you for sharing this video.. it is very insightful. i have a backyard operation here in Nairobi, Kenya. I plan to plant 3 acres in the future. cheers keep up the good work.
Hello. Wow 3 acres 🤩👍 it is nice to hear from someone from Kenya. Hello from San Diego, California. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching. 👍😊👍 Cheers
Despite some having too much growth at the bottom your plants look very healthy and happy! I hope mine will look so good after they grow. Thank you for tips!
This video was very helpful. I was wondering about pruning branches and glad I didn’t do anything yet. Also was going to plant two varieties together but might rethink that although I do believe they have the same root system.
@@1980mezza hello. That is why I have the wooden planters and half of the 55 gallon barrels enclosures around the plants to minimize weeds. I try to take out the weeds whenever they are inside the planter enclosures. I do not mind damaging some of the dragon fruit plant roots while taking out the weeds. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching. 👍😊👍 Cheers
@@sackboymahalo Great thanks for the reply. One more question, do you top up the soil in the planters occasionally? mine are now quite low with a lot of showing roots but I am worried if I put in more soil the bottom of the plant my rot? Is this true
@@1980mezza I do not top off the soil in the planters although every month I add 2 trowels of manure compost to each plant. I do not think topping of the soil will result in root rot. As long as there is good drainage I do not think it will be a problem. I have seen growers add or dump a lot of compost to the plants once a year and this serves as nutrients for the plants the whole year as the compost breaks down. I hope this answers your question. Thank you again. 😀👍 Cheers
Well, I got about 20 cuttings from ebay, about 4 varieties, most sets of 2, I have 5 pots (25 gallons each pot) I mixed the hell out of them and they already growing new branches, that is the only DONT's I did. I saw a few other videos of Dragon fruits were the growers mentioned it was ok to mix them. Will see how mine grow up. I was looking the over crowded dragon fruit on this video and all I saw was $12 bucks per cutting that was alot of money if he sells them. Thank you for the video.
Nice garden my friend I started last year with one big pot and my plant just started hanging over the bicycle tire I have on top. I have another species I started and will make sure to keep it by itself .
Wooh.... some of those dragon fruit pot are crazy insanely over grown its amazing how they can overly grown if unchecked... nice dragon fruit garden. Thank you very much for sharing the tips.👌👍
Oh man I wish I lived in a warm place so I could grow them outside. I am going to try growing them indoors for now and I’m germinating some from seed atm. So exciting I love growing fruit and veg.
Wow! You have so many!! I have a small dragonfruit plant and two cuttings I'm attempting to grow. I can't wait until they get bigger and I'll bring them outside! I have some nice large pots waiting for them. Beautiful yard you have!
I see some of your pots are half inserted in the ground. What pot sizes do you use? 5 gal or bigger? Did you have the bottoms cut off? I did mine the same way and had the bottoms cut off for roots to stretch. Now I am concerned about root bound when they get bigger and also difficult to add compost and fertilizer. Any suggestions?
Hello. I use half of a 55 gallon barrel as "pots" for the plants and yes there are no bottoms. I suggest using the biggest possible pots to eliminate root bound or limit the number of plants in a pot. This is a link to the video on how the pots that I use look like: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UnBgbi67Q3g.html I hope this helps. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching. 👍😀👍 Cheers
Hello from Valley Center, CALIFORNIA!Thanks for the video! I hope this is just the start! San Diego is sure amazing to grow in! Vista, Ca. can even grow pineapples!
Hello. I do not use artificial lighting. I believe the lights are for extending the daylight hours to mimic spring/summer daylight hour times during fall/winter time does tricking the plant to produce flowers/fruits. You can extend the daylight hours as needed depending on the difference between the spring/summer daylight hours against fall/winter daylight hours in your specific location. Thank you for your question and thank you for watching. 👍😊👍 Cheers
@@sackboymahalo I don't have much difference, maybe an hour, in sunlight all year long, (Philippines), and am not planning on producing on a commercial scale. Thank you, it's just curious to me.
Hello. If they are both red or both white there might be no problem. Problem may be apparent when mixing megalanthus with other varieties since megalanthus as stated by some viewers have weaker roots. The problem will probably be more apparent when smaller pots or smaller planting areas are used. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching. Cheers.
I bought two cuttings one grows it’s about a foot long now and the other one did not should I take the one that did not grow out of the pot? Do you have your pots buried in the ground? When mine starts growing large enough for a large pot do I have to put the pot in the ground or can I keep it as is? Thanks
Hello. Cuttings grow at different rates depending on their maturity. I had a cutting that showed growth after 2 1/2 months. I say keep the cutting (no growth) in the pot. My "pots" are 55 gallon barrels cut in half and yes they are buried underground and are open to the soil (no bottoms). You can keep the pots as is - no need to bury. I suggest using a pot that can hold at least 12 inches of soil depth and heavy/big enough that it can safely anchor the plant when it gets big and top heavy. Thank you for your question and thank you for watching. 👍😀👍 Cheers
Hello. This link might answer your question: homeguides.sfgate.com/winter-care-dragon-fruit-plant-56979.html which says 65 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Thank you for your question and thank you for watching. 👍😊👍 Cheers
Thank you so much for generously sharing your experiences Mr. Sackboymahalo. You have been so helpful to me in achieving this level. Her on the Big Island, I have finally achieved the point of my first 4 buds. I have had a difficult time finding other successful dragon fruit growers, except my one friend. Your channel name sounds like you may be in Hawaii?
Aloooha. I was fortunate to have lived in Oahu for 3 years. Great to hear from someone from the Big island 😊 Congratulations on your flower buds. Best wishes. Mahalo for your comment and mahalo for watching. 👍😊👍 Cheers
Hello. Watering is usually dependent on the climate and the type of soil the cuttings are planted in.. with this in mind I usually water the new cuttings every third day. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching. 👍😊👍 Cheers
M thinking of planting dragon fruit from seeds and then I saw this video... Thank you, it will be good if I could get live sappling from you.... From India
Hello. Greetings from San Diego California. Currently I only sell locally (San Diego area) Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching. 👍🙂👍 Cheers
Hello. The round piece at the top of the post is a motorcycle tire. I do not trim above the tire anymore. Once the branch starts to bend because of its length and weight it will trigger to grow new branches on the area of the branch that is bended. Thank you for your question and thank you for watching. 👍😀👍 Cheers
Viewing the commercial dragon fruit plantations.....they are limiting the amount of branches and reducing the fruit yield probably to have uniform big dragon fruits sizes. I do practice the way you let as many branches that stay in the plant to get as many fruits as possible.
I plan on planting 3 cuttings; two are red dragonfruits, and the third one is a white-fleshed species. I assume I shouldn't put these all in one pot, right? I know it was stated in the video, but I wanted to make sure I couldn't save space by putting them all in one container since it was the red and white ones. So, if I were to put the white dragonfruit cutting in one pot by itself, what size pot should I use? One with a ~16 inch diameter, or would I be alright using a somewhat smaller pot?
Hello. I always recommend the biggest size pot possible because the plant will be top heavy as it matures and a bigger size pot will be able to safely anchor the combination of the post's and the plant's weight. I also suggest to have at least 12 inches of soil depth. I hope this helps. Thank you for your question and thank you for watching. 😀👍😊👍 Cheers
Thank you so much for you great videos! They are so helpful. I am relatively new as a dragonfruit grower in East Co San Diego and now see that I have broken all 5 rules!🤦🏼♀️🤷♀️ but I am determined to learn and grow in success of helping my stems produce fruit! Question…some growers suggest only 3 stems per branch and taking the tips off the ends. I see your plants are full of fruit so I am very interested in your wisdom of this and the understanding of trimming and tipping off the ends.
Hello. I mainly trim for the 3 Ds (dead, dying and diseased branches as well as for balancing of the post. I used to "tip" but I don't anymore. I did not see any difference between tipped and untipped branches as far as fruit production. I just let the branches grow. I hope this helps. Thank you again. 👍😊👍 Cheers
Hello. The rubber tire is on top of the post and it is used as top support for the dragon fruit plant. Here is a video on how the tire is held up on the post: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Tdb5ieYa7xk.html Here is a video on how the rebars that hold the rubber tire is constructed: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oT8e634E3A8.html I hope this helps. Thank you for your question and thank you for watching. Cheers.
Hello. You can plant in a bigger pot to avoid transplanting in the future. I hope this helps. Thank you for your question and thank you for watching. 👍😊👍 Cheers
You should try growing your dragonfruit from a pot on top of a post, so the plant can hang down, and the fruit will be able to start production quicker.
Hello. Probably needs to have a way to anchor the pot on top of the post. The dragon fruit gets heavy when it matures. Thank you for your input and thank you for watching. 👍😁👍 Cheers .
Hello. The "pots" are open to the bottom. The pots are 55 gallon barrels cut in half and are embedded 5.5 inches in the ground. This is a link to a video that might show it better: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UnBgbi67Q3g.html I used pots because the soil underneath is predominantly clay and I used my own soil mixture. Another reason is for weed control and lastly I want the soil in the pot elevated for drainage during rainy season. Thank you for your question and thank you for watching. 👍😊👍 Cheers
HoIa wanted to ask a difficult question. I have purchased some dragon fruit red fleshed variety. Dragon fruit plants are unavailable in the area where I live which is the tropics. How long from seed to fruiting do you estimate. I have seen widely varying reports. And is there any way to speed up growth to the fruiting stage biomass required?
Hello. I think the dragon fruit originated from the tropics so your area might be perfect in growing dragon fruit as long as the temperature doesn't go up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. One way I see to speed up growth is by using artificial lighting to extend daylight hours and probably adding fertilizer. I heard fish fertilizer are good. As for the time from seed to fruiting it probably depends on the location... that is probably the reason why your search showed varying reports. I have dragon fruit plants that were started from seeds on March 16, 2018 that have not given fruits yet. Thank you for your question and thank you for watching. 👍😊👍 Cheers.
Very good tips. How can we get lot of fruits fast with young plants? For overcrowded, I guess we can always prune them. Also how did you build pot and trellis?
Hello. Usually you get few fruits from young plants because they have few branches and as they mature they have more branches which translate to more storage of energy to be able to support more fruit production. I guess you can coax the plant to grow more branches by increasing nitrogen application during the first year. This is a link to the first video of the series which shows how the trellis/post is made and how the 55 gallon barrel is set up: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oT8e634E3A8.html There will be a link to the next part at the end of each video. I hope this helps. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching. 👍😊👍 Cheers

Thanks for your dragon fruits experience! I just wonder if the weather is 30~50F. Do I have to cover the dragon fruits? I live 85501. Winter weather some some snow only one night or two days in Globe AZ. Thanks
Hello. It is recommended to cover the dragon fruit plants to minimize exposure to freezing temperatures. Freezing temperatures will damage/kill dragon fruit plants. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching. 👍😊👍 Cheers
@@ericdontsmoke We went to vacation last month and our backyard was destroyed by javalina after one week. Because our friend forgot shot the gate! My dragon fruits still have a little bit! We got home three days ago! We have horrible smoking from wildfire two days now. I got dragon fruits from CA.’s friend last May. Gilbert doesn’t care about winter time! Globe had some snow this February and March! I always put greenhouse or basements!
I had no idea that I could grow dragonfruit in a pot. Mine is super large and out of control, I would love to have more control of the plant and its fruiting.
