What are some of YOUR favorite musicals ? Which ones would you rather perform in instead of see live (or vice versa)? Have a great week and weekend all !!!
Once Upon a Mattress is so fun to perform, but I don't think I'd ever pay to go watch it. I'd also do Pirates of Penzance again in a heartbeat. I really want to see How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and Thoroughly Modern Millie in a heartbeat.
In no particular order...and there’s so many more I want to include!! 1. Newsies 2. Legally Blonde 3. 42nd Street 4. Anything Goes 5. Something Rotten I LOVED performing as Princess Fiona in Shrek, but I’m okay with not seeing it live! On the other hand, I saw Kinky Boots live and loved it, but wouldn’t want to be in it.
so are we all going to ignore how incredibly talented kevin is on the piano or am i the only one with my jaw dropped to the floor while he plays these pieces so beautifully and so casually
I mean his is a professional music director who went to music college, so you'd kind of hope so. But I know what you mean, and as an enthusiastic amateur it makes me insanely jealous
I adore Jekyll and Hyde and wish more people knew about it, no one I know has ever listened to it! And The Wizard of Oz was one of the first musicals I ever saw live so that's always going to be one of my favourites!
Leyla Natasha I totally agree with you about j&h, I introduced my friend to the show and she fell in love with it! It's great to know you're spreading a great show
1. Ragtime 2. The Last Five Years 3. Once on This Island 4. Hamilton 5. Next to Normal I would love to be in all of these except for Once on This Island and Hamilton. Updated list: 1. Bare 2. Once on This Island 3. Ragtime 4. Next to Normal 5. The Last Five Years
Honestly, a week from now Hamilton will probably not even be on the list. Ragtime is literally the only one that will probably keep it's place because I love the score. Then prolouge is probably the best thing since the prolouge for Into The Woods. it's (Ragtime) also extremely relavant because of some of it's themes.
I did ragtime last summer and I absolutely loved the show while doing it, but it's really in hindsight when I realized how much I love it and how incredible it is.
Mine are 1. Les Misérables 2. Parade 3. Bonnie and Clyde 4. Miss Saigon 5. The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Also A Chorus Line, the Last Five Years, Ragtime, Guys and Dolls, The Addams Family) let me stop myself there 😂😂
In no particular order: Hamilton Legally Blonde Come from Away The Book of Mormon Billy Elliot (has a special place in my heart because it was the first live theatre I ever watched)
Agh I'm really bad at choosing but I'm going to try (not in any particular order) 1. The Last Five Years 2. Great Comet 3. Dear Evan Hansen 4. Les Miserables 5. Falsettos
1) Newsies 2) Rent 3) Les Mis 4) Jekyll and Hyde 5) Come From Away I would love to be in all of these, but Newsies would definitely be a bit iffy since I can't dance for the life of me and the dancing really just makes the show😅
Newsies I'd love to be Crutchie, Maureen in Rent, Fantine in Les Mis, Lucy in J&H, and Annette/Beverly in CFA. It's really cool to see that my list is Kevin approved. Totally made my day. Have a great day, Kevin!
The dancing in Newsies is almost to the point of dangerous- My best friend actually slammed down face first while doing a backflip during the opening number.
Oh my goodness! I never knew you liked Jekyll And Hyde!! Can you perhaps do a piano cover of one of the songs? I'm just wondering. Anyway!! My favourite musicals!!: 5: Urinetown 4: Legally Blonde 3: Carrie The Musical 2: Les Miserables 1: Jekyll And Hyde The Musical
1. Spring Awakening 2. Caberet, prefer the revival w/ Alan cumming 3. RENT 4. Original Little Shop, not a huge fan of the revival 5. West side story, but for the instrumentals more than the story, because it such a good score and so fun to play and develop technique with. 6. Great Comet of 1812, but I'm just sort of grapsing that one totally now, I just love the music
What a coincidence! My high school did both Guys and Dolls and The Wizard of Oz in the past few years, and although I didn't perform as an actor in them, (I can't act or sing at all), I did get to play in the musical pit for The Wizard of Oz as a clarinet, and it was an amazing show to play from an instrumental standpoint.
Have you ever heard of "A day in Hollywood, a night in the Ukraine"? I've never seen the show, but an old voice teacher gave me a song from it called "You're the Best" - definitely worth a listen
I adore songs for a new world and knew you would.. right up your alley with composition, originality, and “plot.” ❤️ you Kevin! You and JRB could totally jam together it’d be an honor for both of you!
I did guys and dolls my freshman year in high school and I was in the mission band and it was the first musical I was ever in. And I still can sing follow the fold by heart😂 It is a cool show on of my favorites. But I think my top 5 favorites(in no particular order)are Anything Goes, The Great Comet of 1812, Rent, Newsies and Wicked.
Ugh... it's like trying to choose your favorite child! But if I must... In no particular order: 1) 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee 2) The Count of Monte Cristo 3) Bonnie and Clyde 4) Urinetown 5) Anything Goes Also love Addams Family, all Sondheim, all Gershwin, ALW!!!, pretty much everything except for Rock Me Amadeus and Shrek.
1. Spring Awakening 2. Fun Home (The music isn’t big Broadway stuff but it’s super just small and personal and real and absolutely gorgeous ) 3. Newsies 4. Next To Normal 5. 35mm (it’s really a song cycle but the music is good) 6. The Last 5 Years 7. Falsettos 8. Tuck Everlasting Special mention 1. West Side Story- I like everything about this musical except Tony and Maria.
It is absolutely crazy that I have a connection to the majority of the shows on your list! Bear with me if my comment is long winded, please. Guys & Dolls was my first high school show (I played a crapshooter), and I never really liked it until the show was over! In regards to Jekyll & Hyde and Songs For A New World, I'm currently learning songs from both of those shows! And lastly, my local middle school is doing The Wizard of Oz, and I'm the head makeup designer/artist. I absolutely love your list, keep up the great work!
I love The Wizard of Oz! My drama club did the entire show last year for our spring musical. It’s such a classic and an amazing show with an amazing soundtrack. I was in the crew, and putting the production together was amazing. During the last show, several of us got emotional since the eighth graders were leaving (I’m in middle school). So, besides the obvious, that show means a lot to me and I associate many joyous memories with it.
Saw the recent off-Broadway revival of tick, tick, boom and loved it! On top of that, there was a talkback after the performance I saw with the director and the cast members. Not many of us stayed, so it really felt like an intimate conversation about the work with us and them. What struck me the most was that Nick Blaemire talked about how Jonathan Larson was really a millennial before that existed. And that just made so much sense! :)
1-Wicked 2-Book of Mormon 3-Newsies 4-Les Miserables 5-Into The Woods (I love all your musical videos, thanks for sharing your love of theatre with us)
I’m really happy you mentioned tick, tick...boom! i love that one so much!!! Some of my faves are Les Mis, A Chorus Line, Spring Awakening, Parade, Something Rotten
Omg!!!!! I was soooooo happy when you put Wizard of Oz on here!!!!!!!! It’s one of my favs too!!!! And my high school is putting on this show right now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Okay first off your dog is frickin adorable, Second off my top 5 favorite shows in no particular order are: 1) Ragtime 2) Avenue Q 3) Great Comet 4) Into the Woods 5) Cabaret ❤️
Top 5: 5. The Lion King 4. Cats 3. Into the woods 2. Newsies 1. Wicked I love Wicked (my favorite musical)! I am an actress, and my dream role is Elphaba. The story of her is so relatable and inspiring!
1. Phantom of the Opera 2. Newsies 3. Chicago 4. West Side Story 5. Bandstand I'd LOVE to perform in Newsies, Chicago, and West Side Story. ALSO sidebar: you playing the Wizard of Oz music totally took me back to doing that show in high school. :D
Oh my goodness I have never encountered another person who knows Tick Tick Boom!! I actually performed Therapy for our regional theatre festival and am taking it to state! As far as my top 5 go, it would have to be: 1.Rent 2. Falsettos 3. Tick Tick Boom 4. Music Man 5. Kinky Boots
1.Great Comet 2.The Band’s Visit 3.A Little Night Music 4.Mamma Mia 5.Ragtime I would love to perform in then all but I could never do ragtime. For a million different reason.
The most fun show I've ever been in is far and away Sister Act. It's not my favorite show, but it was extremely fun to perform in. We did it in an outdoor ampitheater and it was always so funny to see what our headpieces would do in the wind. Mine blew into my face as I was turning so I couldn't see anything on multiple occasions😂 My favorite shows are Les Mis, Come From Away, The Sound of Music, Mamma Mia, and I've recently discovered and really enjoy Spamalot!
Ecstatic that tick tick boom is on your list. Never heard anyone else speak about it before! Huge love of mine :) Also mine are probably 1. Rent 2. Les Miserables 3. Edges 4. West Side Story 5. 42nd Street
1. West Side Story (nothing will ever beat this one for me) 2. Next to Normal 3. Les Miserables 4. The Light in the Piazza 5. The Hunchback of Notre Dame
In no particular order: 1) Into the woods 2) Sweeney Todd 3) Les Mis 4) Pippin 5) Company 6) The Book of Mormon I could go on. (The first three are the stage versions btw)
1: Little Shop of Horrors 2: Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 3: The Wiz 4: Be More Chill (not so much for the music, but the storyline is cool) 5: Hair Those are some good ones in my opinion for anybody who’s never heard them I’d check them out :)
Late to the party but oh well. 1st: Ragtime, Into the Woods (I'm too indecisive) 2nd: Wicked 3rd: Sweeney Todd I listen to Women On The Verge of a Nervous Breakdown a LOT but it's mainly just for background music. However Tangled Up and On The Verge (both songs from the musical previously mentioned) I could listen to for forever.
This list was kinda hard to make- I like Heathers since it got me into Broadway, but I know how you feel about that musical- 1. Hamilton ( Because I'm basic-) 2. Jekyll & Hyde 3. A Gentleman's Guide To Love And Murder ( You should see it if you haven't. I only listened to the soundtrack so far.) 4. Something's Rotten 5. TGWDLM
1. West Side Story 2. Les Misérables 3. South Pacific 4. The Light in the Piazza 5. Company Honorable Mention: Miss Saigon I would love to be in all of these musicals but I would kill to play Maria in West Story!
Ah, Tick Tick Boom! Wanted to make that here but I'll probably never find the scripts or partitures in my country lol it was a one-person show Larson made back in the day. I found lot of references to RENT while reading it (well, pretty much the other way around) but I actually learned more from RENT when I read that.
1. natasha pierre and the great comet of 1812 2. into the woods 3. les mis 4. waitress 5. the scarlet pimpernel i'm more of a backstage person, but yo being the witch in into the woods is My Dream
1) The King and I 2)Man of La Mancha 3) Ragtime 4) Hunchback of Notre Dame 5)West Side Story and literally every other Sondheim show! I kinda have a thing for the oldies in case you couldn't tell! 😅
Honorable mentions: a man of no importance, light in the Piazza, fun home, Jekyll and Hyde, and I'd have to include Phantom since it was my "Gateway Musical"
