My 17 year old son watched this video, this year (2023) to find an idea for a Christmas present for me. He decided on the Pilot E 95 s in black and surprised me with this wonderful pen this morning! I put ink in, wrote, and it was AMAZING! I’m sure glad he found your video. 😊
That is so great! Thanks for letting me know. It so nice to hear that I provided some inspiration. Plus, that is a wonderful pen. It has such an interesting and expressive gold nib on it. Great choice. Merry Christmas!
One more thing I forgot to tell you that I think is fun…I asked Drew which video he watched for fountain pen gift ideas, and he said, “ I don’t remember but he had glasses and a big book case in the background”. I knew immediately it was you and when I said, “Hemingway Jones?” He said without hesitation, “yes”!😄
I love Pilot pens so much (I have a Kakuno and Falcon), but their converters (to the models that use them) seem to have the most minimal ink capacity of all the fountain pens I've used. I think I've read somewhere that the Kakuno can fit Pilot's largest converter which typically only fits in their highest tier models. I haven't tried it yet. I do want to get a Kaweco sport one of these days, but for now I have a TWSBI eco on the way because the ink capacity on those is perfect for a traveling artist and their nibs clog the least when filling them with waterproof ink! Great list! I didn't even know Pilot had a piston-fill pen model!
The Pilot Custom 823 is epic. It is so perfect. The TWSBI Eco is one of favorites. Such a great pen. You’re right about Pilot and the small converters. They are almost comical. All the best!
That is a great list with a nice price range! I think one of the BENU pens would be great for some people! Lots of sparkle! They have a good price range as well!
I've given away quite a few pens the last decades, but only ever gifted one. The distinction is "here you go, try a fountain pen instead", and no occasion or packaging. They've been one Baoer 801, and the rest of them either Jinhao 159 or X750, with nibs I've tuned myself (not necessary for the Baoer) to make sure they're great. The single one I gifted was a Lamy Safari. It'd feel cheap to gift a Chinese pen, even if I like them, and they weren't new. They were mine, as I seem to buy one of them now and then. The funny thing is that it's important to me that the fountain pen is respected and used. And every Jinhao that I unceremoniously handed over to help, was, and they have mostly changed the persons' writing habits and relation to pens. ...But I don't think the gifted Safari ever was. I suspect it has never been tried. As far as I know, that person still buys or 'steals' a new expendable ballpoint pen every time a pen is needed, after having run around like a headless chicken, wailing about "why is there no pen that works?". Gifts are always tricky for me, because I want them to "fit". Usually, a FP doesn't fit.
The list is really good. I've got a few pens as a present but when it comes to some expensive ones i have, i had to gift them to myself. The problem is i keep gifting myself a little too frequently.
If Santa brings you a Visconti Homo Sapiens, you may consider the new limited edition travel version. It comes with a beautiful Visconti Homo Sapiens design ink pot. Limited to 300 pieces, so they won’t last long. I love mine.
Hi Hemingway. It would be interesting to see you present gift ideas for fountain pen collectors. I am thinking here about pen storage solutions, pen cases, multi ink selection boxes, leather bound journals. Just a thought...
All are good choices except Liliput and Kakuno according to me.. Liliput is a cute little pen, but too small for any practice use.. I’ve not re-inked it even once after purchasing it.. I’d prefer to gift a nicer looking pen in the same price range than a plastic Kakuno.. And I’d include a Vanishing point in the list !
Vanishing Point is a good one! Poor Kakuno. I love my little Buddy! Liliput is great though. So easy to always have around you. Great comment and thank you!
I finally got to a pen show and was able to see and touch a Visconti Homo Sapiens in person and it is all I hoped it would be. The Montblanc 159 actually went the other way for me and fell off the list. The threads bothered me with my grip. So my #1 wish list pen is the Homo Sapiens...but that is not happening. The other pen I saw that really intrigued me was the Opus 88 Opera in grey arrow. I have never had an eyedropper pen and this one just struck a chord with me I would not have expected if I had just been looking on an internet site. Totally unexpected, but Seeing it in-person and holding it in my hands, this pen shot to the top of the list too. And at $150-$170 it is a lot more realistic for what I feel right spending or asking for.
Hello Hemingway Jones , congratulations for all your tests, I need a little help I am looking for a fountain pen to draw with a regular line that glides well medium and resistant tips with a regular flow and very dense ink do you have a model for me advise
How do the Estie’s nib sizes compare to Japanese and European brands? Since Esterbrook is an American company, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The Estie is tempting me, but so are the E95S and 823!
Excellent quiet. They are Jowo nibs so they are wider than the Pilots. The E95s is an excellent bargain. It has such a unique feel. Bargainous at $136. The 823 is as good as any pen. Brilliant.
On my letter to Santa it would say.... Dear Santa ive been very good this year. Please could I have a "Montblanc Meisterstuck LeGrand Fountain Pen Around the World in 80 Days" 😂 This pen is really beautiful and different from the standard 149.
@@HemingwayJones Very True! That would work. I love my pink Benchmade, it matches my pink Spyderco... LOL.... Which matches my Lamy, Twsbi, and others.
