the excellent JFC Fuller said it was because it was Alexander`s general ship was put to such a universal test that he takes his place at the head of the great captains

If Alexander had not died when he did and lived twenty or thirty years longer there would have been no Roman empire so his death was one the most important events in history as to what it might have been other wise

Hey Jakub, thank you for your comment. No i have not heard of Jan Žižka but thanks to your comment I have just read his Wikipedia. You are right he was clearly a very good general and like English hero Admiral Nelson he too was blinded and only had one eye. A fascinating man. Thank you for helping me learn.

as for the greatest military commander without doubt it was Alexander he was one the three conquerorers of Asia he was also the greatest mountain fighter in history the son of Antigonous Demetrius called the besieger couldnot even take Rhodes whereas Aexandwer took tyre and Gaza one after the other Allexander was the greatest besieger in history

Controversial yes. Genghis Khan wasn’t ancient. Historians regard the end of the ancient world with either the beginning of the common era or the end of the Western Roman Empire. Here is my list: Pyrrhus of Epirus, Sun Tzu, Hannibal, Julius Caesar, Alexander… Good video

Hey Deana, thank you for your comment. Sun Tzu had many accomplishments beyond his writings. He achieved notable success as a general and military advisor to King Helü of Wu. One of his most significant accomplishments was his leadership in the Battle of Boju in 506 BC, where he orchestrated a decisive victory against the much larger and powerful state of Chu. This battle is a prime example of his strategic ingenuity, where he employed surprise attacks and psychological tactics to outmaneuver the Chu forces. Additionally, his reforms in military training and discipline were critical in maintaining the effectiveness and efficiency of the Wu army. I would go as far as to compare him to Gaius Marius in terms of his military reforms and installing discipline onto his army. Thanks again for your question.

You are right I should have put Belisarius on the list. I regret not doing that. if not for the Justinian plague he would have reconquered the old empire. I regret not including him. In my defence, this is a tough list to do. Thanks for your comment I am glad someone mentioned him.
