Have you ever been questing and then randomly come upon a mob during the quest and think "Holy shit, are we actually fighting that person here? And not in a raid?" Well, this is probably a feeling the average wow player doesn't have, since I know for a fact most of you dont know much about lore. But not to worry! I'll make sure to explain who the person is and why its such a big deal that they were involved in a quest as some random quest mob.

At level 7-10, as a Human in Elywnn forest you receive a quest to kill a gnoll called Hogger. It is a little known fact that Hogger is the reincarnation of Sargeras, however his god like powers are well known and he should be handled in a 40 man raid.

I've dropped MANY hoggers in my day. Some really felt like they had the strength of Sargeras, but they all ended up in the same place every time I dropped one.... In the Stormwind sewer system where the littles shits belonged

In regards to Zar'jira, in a way I feel like it was a good idea to place her in the troll starting zone because it allows the fresh new players to understand Vol'Jin's backstory and try to get them to sympathize with Vol'Jin. It surely beats doing the orc starting zone and the most important lore related thing you do is collecting cactus apples for your boss like the peon you are at level 4

That's why I love the blood elf starter zone. It's still pretty lore heavy. Sure its stuck in the burning crusade timeline but it helps new players who dont know the lore of the sin'dorei and helps them to understand why we are the way we are. Now I main a sin'dorei death knight but i do have alot of blood elf toons lol

Gotta point out something about Dar'khan though: Back in the day, Deathholme was basically an open-world dungeon. It's soloable at level now because of changes to class abilities, but back then if you went in there alone you'd get murdered. If you look at the quest description for Dar'khan it says you need five people. You really needed a dungeon group. Myself and my guildie got our mount money by running people through Deathholme (me tanking, him healing). At the time it certainly seemed pretty epic. I really liked the fact that this important charcter's demise took place in the open world and everyone got to do it. I strongly disagree with the idea that everything epic must happen in an instance, and with the idea that a huge grind makes a boss more epic. Ysera is a perfect example of how you can make an accessible yet epic boss fight scenario. Everyone does it, but it's not like she's nerfed: you just have a forty man raid with a great raid lead behind you. At the end of the day, Ysera is still her epic self and when the lament of the highbourne plays you will still bawl your eyes out. If you weren't too busy doing that to fight in the first place.

I doubt it’s the same anymore, but since the scaling update of 7.3.5, I had to do that quest last night to kill him and it was tough. I went in solo on my rogue I started leveling, without heirlooms. Was able to kite out the adds on the sides of the room and take them out one by one, leaving just him in the room. With 2 stuns, an interrupt, and a silence ability under my belt, I barely was able to do it. I had to drink a healing potion, as well as use pop crimson vile on cd. With some LOS fiddling and slowing/stunning him as much as I could, I took him out with my last couple pixels of health. Then I see this video, and I find out he was actually a big deal. Made that encounter feel much cooler.

@keelhaulsthingsthatdontmat3877
I actually think quest kills can be far more significant than raid/dungeon bosses if they're done well. Dar'khan was actually a super-hard fight and pretty much came only at the very end, which I think is pretty significant. Plus, dungeons and raids are full of "unimportant nobody" filler bosses. And, to be honest, I'm over quests having "final battles" that just end in me being stunned while the boss blathers on and disappears. Legion had way too many "Enough, I tire of this" villains. The really well-done quest bosses are the ones you see/interact with several times before the final showdown.

To be fair, when they made him, they probably hadn't even created the full story of the Titan Keepers and how important they were supposed to be. He was probably just meant to be some guy created by the Titans to watch over some facility with Titan lore.
@ZulatobariGreatforge
@ZulatobariGreatforge 6 лет назад
Point being, it is disappointing that such a powerful, and now lore important character (Chronicles Vol. 1) is relegated to a lvl 40 dungeon boss. Also, I believe he was a Titan Watcher in Classic/BC, even then the Titan's were effectively 'Gods', we never met them but their presence was known. This being from a quest in Darkshore where we see a projection of 'Aman' w/ a Titan Watcher model referring to Aman'thul presumable. The Chronicles change was making him a Titan /KEEPER/ instead of a Titan Watcher.

Watchers being lesser Titanforged who are in charge of lesser facilities, and the Keepers being what amounts to the, 'sons and daughter' of the Titans.

"He was a titan in vanilla." Haha no... Archaedus was always just a watcher, the true titans all left Azeroth after creating the dragon aspects, long before mortal life had started to bloom... even the Kal'dorei hadn't sprung up yet on Kalimdor then. All but one that is... namely Azeroth's own world-soul, as a world-soul is in essence an infant titan.

Character that should be on this list instead of those we killed with help of overpowered lore characters: Dimensius the All-devouring - you remember this NPC from Netherstorm you go to kill with bunch of random ethereals? Well guess what this guy is a manifestation of a fucking Void Lord Zalazane - ok they fixed this one with Cata revamp, but before that ... geze Yenniku - don't know who this guy is? Well he was the youngest son of Vol'jin before we killed him Most of the villains in artifact quest lines ...I'm sure I could find more. High Admiral "Shelly" Jorrik - this guy is a High admiral so I guess he is important, but he is just a random ass NPC

Lord Peranolde? The leader of the Syndicate and closest thing Alterac had to a king after the Second War? Yeah he and the Syndicate were all but forgotten by Cata, but he was a fairly major lore character. Or Galen Trollbane for that matter. To everyone asserting that certain NPCs should be more "powerful", take a second to think about how power is a relative measurement. I have seen comments about low level dungeon bosses being super important, yet killed by level 40s etc, but that's just how a level based game has to work. Yes they were important, but relative to the level of player designed to be challenged by them, they are very powerful. Think of it like this: Dar'khan is level 20 and gets killed by questing players, but relative to his purpose in that zone and the players fighting him he is very powerful. You have to think of these characters relatively and realize that we didn't always have level-adapting heirlooms and enchants. A lot of these very important characters were created before the game was so simplified. Edit: also, do you think that if you were living inside the wow universe that you would have a "level". The numbered leveling system is for user experience and organization. If you could bring an NPC to life and talk to them they wouldn't have any idea what level they were. Just like the powerful people in reality don't have levels that we measure them by, the NPCs in wow wouldn't in their own right.
@guilhermeroyama8842
@guilhermeroyama8842 6 лет назад
Yeah true, not to mention most NPCs have different levels according to their location. So the level system of the NPCs is only to keep the game balanced since that's how the difficulty system of WoW works.
@mangomariel
@mangomariel 6 лет назад
Sometimes you get help from an NPC at lvl 20 and he seems good, later you get help from him at lvl 80 and he seems good. It's all relative. It's not like he is 4x better at 80, it's just an artificial game play mechanic to keep the game going,. It's not a story mechanic.
@mangomariel
@mangomariel 6 лет назад
For example lore wise, Arthas, and Yogg Saron could probably kill almost all WOD raid bosses, even tho they are lvl 80 and WOD bosses are 100. Says something about how shitty WOD was :/ Gameplay wise a lvl 100 character can kill Arthas and Yogg Saron alone, because it's 4 expansions back. , but not WOD bosses

Jørgen Fallet Mosand Gameplay wise I defeated the Lich King alone extremely easily at level 100. But lorewise he is one of the 15 most powerful characters in Warcraft and the most powerful final boss along with Deathwing. (I still think Arthas is the strongest though)
@simon9902
@simon9902 6 лет назад
+Friendly Engineer. Arthas is way weaker to Deathwing: the first have the power of Ner'zhul/the scourge (he lost some when he separate from the burning crusade). And the second the power of Old gods and Titans (the ultimate being of the universe and further). Deathwing could destroy azeroth when Arthas was just a mear kid threat. But yeah after that we had garrosh who was a kid too compare to Arthas strenght (and a tiny little cry baby for Deathwing). Ultimately we could kill Deathwing cause of all the other aspect and the dragon soul (a weapon way stronger of frostmourne itself)

It mean that Mathias was just a few meter away from death, since in lore, the adventurer would have found him and killed him while doing the quest, we are supposed to wipe everything in the area, both cultists, the elementals, the dragons, and the leader. I have to toss my opinion in and say that it's a shame you didn't mention Orgrim in WoD. His lack of ANY sort of treatment was damn near insulting considering how important of a lore character he is. He was such a throw away and it was a huge shame. Hell half of the time his dinky "cut scenes" didn't even seem to work for awhile.

i think this video has some pertinent qualities,i like this idea,maybe it could become a series in the future,one of the npc's i thought was really interesting personally was "Kathra-Natir" the dreadlord,he wasn't part of any quest,but he was available for a short time period as a (boss) on the broken shore before the opening of the area,there might be some screen shots or some wowhead evidence to prove this,but he stood out to me and will always be in a special place in my memory.

I would argue that Dar'khan is the only one that makes sense being easily killed as a low-level. Because he had been vaporized and killed a handful of times. So I would say his powerlevel have been dwindled to be pretty much non-existent now as I would believe the void gods had been draining his power.

Well when Anzu ate Seethe, his cursed flesh turned him flightless (Like you saw in the dungeon in TBC) which is why I was somewhat confused in Alternate Draenor - Not to mention Rhukmar was killable, and was known to be a vain & racist to non-flightless creatures was still kind & benevolent & Anzu was moreorless her (Yes Rhukmar is a girl!) bestfriend. She could not find Anzu because his love for Rhukmar was strong & he didn't want her to see him flightless, so hid. She was humbled by Anzu's sacrifice, but she was also horrified by the curse that now darkened her home. Rukhmar took to the skies and left Arak, eventually settling atop Gorgrond's highest peak. Rukhmar decided that if she could not find Anzu to thank him, then she would reward his sacrifice by creating a new race in his honor. Using her own life energies, Rukhmar transformed some of her kaliri followers into the arakkoa: "heirs of Arak". Due to sacrificing much of her life & power though, she ended up dying. Later the Arakkoa, they found her charred bones near the spire, and they used their magics to resurrect her. But it was only a partial success. This new Rukhmar had only a sliver of the original's power and intelligence. Nonetheless, the Apexis worshiped her as their goddess reborn. The Anhari infused her with their Light powers, granting her a long life so she could soar the skies for millennia. So perhaps the alternate 'Rhukmar' we saw in Alternate Draenor, was merely the shadow / recreated version from the remains.

With the sea witch pre cata I think it was there was awhole event to take back the echo isles then in cata when the troll area was released she is the "end boss" I guess you could say. So there was a huge whole event to take back the isles and the last bit of it was finished in the quest line.

I've thought about this so many times. About your main character, because I actually read the quest to him and researched him. When I found out how significant he was and how little focus was put on him I was genuinely surprised. Especially when you look at some of the goofy raid bosses they have.

I always though it was dumb that Rokhan was some random NPC in Northrend in Dragonblight that gave you an elite quest. I know he was kind of just in WC3 to fill a slot for a companion for Rexxar, but if Chen became a big deal then why couldn't Rokhan?

Random Quest Mobs? Every single of those NPCs is not random, but placed were it made sense for the story of that zone. And it wouldn't make sense to put them into some stupid raid or dungeon. Most of the bosses in Raids are anyway random filler between the Arthas, Deathwings and Kil'Jaedens. Remember Highastromancer Solarian, Marrow'Gar, Flamegor, or any of the other dozen of random filler Bosses? It's good that Blizzard doesn't put all important NPCs in Raids just to serve raiders as loot bags. As Quest Mobs they have their story they can shine in without being grinded for some tier set.

I disagree with your assertion that these lore characters should have been raid or dungeon bosses. They don't really make much sense there Zar'jira's importance is primarily to the Darkspear trolls. The other races don't really have a stake in her death. She also doesn't really fit any of the Cata dungeons (again, because she's important more as the source of the trolls' plight than as one of the Naga who might assault the Abyssal Maw) Like Zar'jira, Sethe doesn't fit any of the WoD dungeons either. The raids are all focussed on the Iron Horde or the Legion so he wouldn't have fit in there and the Arakkoa of Skyreach don't worship him either so he would have clashed with the theme of that dungeon as well (which is about the glory of the Arakkoa, not the dark side of their society) Ysera, like I said earlier, would have fit in with the Emerald Nightmare theme, but she's more important in the main zone. If she retreats to the Nightmare, there's no inner conflict for Tyrande to resolve: both the things she's after are in the Nightmare, so she'd have no reason not to follow. Killing Ysera in a regular quest means Tyrande has to choose between trying to rescue her beloved or stop Ysera from destroying the Temple of Elune. This is a much more compelling story than "Okay. I need to get to the Nightmare to rescue Malfurion and Ysera. Come back in a couple weeks" Fenris could have replaced Darmac in Blackrock Foundry, but it would make both the questline of Frostfire and his fight in BRF worse in the process. Most players (all Alliance and a whole lot of Horde) would have no idea who he's supposed to be, and players who care about him during the zone would be very disappointed by the lack of decent resolution to Ganar's story in Frostfire. Dar'khan is harder to defend because BC era Blizzard hadn't really learned to use their quests to tell a story effectively. By modern design principles, he would haver fit in well inside Sunwell Plateau as something of a prelude to Wrath, but that still leaves the Blood Elves without a big thing to cap off their starting experience. I can't fault past Blizzard for using him there instead of saving him for Sunwell, over a year after the release of TBC Ultimately, Blizzard have become better at telling stories through their questlines and a consequence of that is that sometimes important characters will have to get killed as a result of that. Saving the characters for a raid or dungeon only makes the zone's story worse and diminishes the impact of the important bosses in the raid. Imagine if each of the bosses in Nighthold was the culmination of one of the storylines. It would make Elisande and Guldan's deaths much less impactful. Legion's dungeons at the end of each zone does help, but you're still left with cases like Ysera where the story is better if she's not in the dungeon
@SampoPaalanen
@SampoPaalanen 6 лет назад
With Dar'khan there is a possibility that he could return, I mean when we kill him it isn't the first time he died, but depending on how some scenes in Sunwell trilogy played out either his second or third time he has died on screen, since the story is rather vague as did Tyragosa kill him when she stomped Dar'khan or did he teleport away just in-time, there's nothing vague about the time Kalecgos reduced Dar'khan to skeleton though. EDIT: not Kalecgos but Aveena but the point stands still.
@Dovahnuke

For Dar'khan he was even extremly hard to kill (at least for me as a new player) I remember having to make a party with people that were above his level to kill him so he wasn't just a guy they through there to be killed by anyone. Well now with lvlung beeing easier he is but he was really far from it at the time!

Could've been interesting if they made Dar'khan a hidden optional boss in the Sunwell, like all the ones Karazhan has. I don't know if the Sunwell was planned as the final raid of the xpac from the start. If it wasn't then it made a lot of sense to put Dar'khan as basically the final boss of the blood elves starting area, him being mostly responsible for the sorry state the blood elves were in at the start of TBC.
@ZrodyApo

Dar'khan was a pain in the ass to kill back in BC, you needed a full group of players and the magic items that silence him to beat him, he was equivalent to a dungeon boss
@Biouke
@Biouke 6 лет назад
Plus, Dar'khan wasn't that important, I remember at the time I just thought "oh, so the WoW manga is canon", I hadn't even read it and was a bit disappointed to have this guy as the end-of-starting-zone boss. In comparison, I was quite pleased to avenge Vol'jin in the new troll starting zone because to someone who initially got into WarCraft with the RTS, it made more sense than Zalazane, who came out of nowhere in WoW.

I include neither the Sunwell trilogy nor Blood of the Highborne in my headcanon. While I accept the existence of Dar'Khan and the fact that he was indeed the traitor who helped Arthas and was killed by him (in other words, only his brief appearance in "Arthas: Rise of the Lich King"), as far as my headcanon goes, he was not subsequently vaporized even once, and him not being all powerful and not much of a big deal is justified.

Kinda off topic but something I enjoy about Game of Thrones aswell is that if you've read the books you can see they included many important characters in the show that are just kinda there in the background and don't even necessarily have any lines, but if you know the context of the scenes and remember the descriptions of certain characters you can recognize them there :)

I agree with these for the most part, but Sethe and Fenris just aren’t quite on the same level for me. Zar’jira is the reason we have trolls, Dar’khan is behind the story of the Forsaken, blood elves, Kael’thas and Kel’thuzad, and Ysera is quite obviously a goddamn Dragon Aspect (and is the most significant one to the general story of Warcraft other than Alexstrasza IMO). Meanwhile Sethe is behind the backstory of a race that, while heavily featured in Outland, Draenor, and a couple dungeons, never even had their own raid, and were really just kind of a filler race. And Fenris is mostly only notable because of his relation to other, more important characters.

Dar'khan actually beat and mind-controlled Korialstrasz in the Sunwell manga. The red dragon who was second only to Alexstrasza and was fairly infamous for being a Knaak mary-sue, part of the trilogy with Rhonin and Broxigar (although Broxigar was more liked than the others). It's crazy how he went from that... to getting stomped by level 19 Horde twinks.

You should have included Murmur. Even though he was a last boss of one of the dungs in Auchendoun in TBC. This guy was responsible for having destroyed the Place, in the lore it was stated that he could destroy entire civilizations simply by yawning, and yet. 5 guys go in, find this random boss and kills him. Soooo undramatic for a being that according to the lore at the time that was presented, rivaled Titans in Power, even though the extreme bits of it may be retconned or simply a metaphor.

I was thinking more like the Anvilmar's, in northern Wetlands. There the rightful air to Ironforge. But since the conflict between the other clans happened in IF, way before classic. The Anvilmar's said were out! And just never came back. They were close with the Bronzebeard's. Hence why they had the majority of Ironforge.

Basically, one of the big reasons the Horde even exists and the draenei were nearly wiped out. Pretty important, huh? He gets killed in a quest in Mac'aree. A pretty good quest, but still a quest.
