LOVE my Aglaonemas. I keep them in the darkest areas of my condo, furthest away from any windows. I equally only water about every 3 weeks or so and they continue to thrive and push new growth. I've had surprisingly good look with my Maranta Leuconeura/prayer plant but continue to fail with Calatheas. I have a Calathea Undulata and Calathea Zebrina. I thought the Undulata would be easier since the leaves are a different texture but It's proving to be equally challenging. :-/ I'm looking for a Stromanthes or Ctenanthes to try. The Norfolk Pine is another easy low light pant that I wish got more love and recognition by other plant enthusiasts. I've found it to be such a great easy going plant.. :-) ALSO, Thank you for being so specific about your watering schedule and watering technique. I find that others who provide online videos about plant care consider once a week 'rarely' watering their plant and almost always recommend full saturation which does not work if your climate is more humid or if your plants are not receiving enough light. Especially if they're not in the correct soil mixture or pot with drainage holes.

Peace lilies are not as low light as they’re rumored to be. In my experience they need a lot of indirect bright light, for many hours a day, regular fertilizing, and need to dry out until they start to hint at drooping before soaking them with filtered water.

I like your choices. I held off for a very long time to get a ZZ plant but then realized the Raven would work really well in my bathroom which is gray, white, and black. There's one good-sized window so that light should be just right. I can't appreciate dracaenas or give them the praise they are due because they remind me of working in the office for 35 years and I just want to forget that :) I'm certain the peace lilies in the office survived on a diet of coffee.
@miriamrobarts
@miriamrobarts 4 года назад
I've grown a couple of Peace Lilies, & they've been one of the easiest plants for me. I would say to put them right next to a window (or glass door) with bright indirect light. Make sure it has good drainage, and just water it when the soil is dry, or if the leaves start to droop. It will perk up again within a few hours. However, if you have been watering it and the leaves droop, it probably has had too much water and you should let it dry out.

We have this Spathiphyllum at work (school library). We forgot to put it away from direct light before summer vacations (2 months in my country), so it looked totally dead when we went back (all other plants were living there best lives, they are in plastic pots with built-in water reserve). So we gently plucked all the dead leaves that would not resist when we would touch it, give it a good splash and put it in a less sunny area. Oh boy did it revived, we even got 3 splendid flowers a few months later. And it survived the 2 months lockdown without watering it before like it never happened.

Pothos or snakeplants aren't really low light, perhaps I would say it's in between the two. My pothos lost her beautiful color after I put her 2 meters from the window, after I put it 1 meter closer, the beautiful color return. Similar things goes on to my snakeplant and fern -- growth of new leaves stopped or even died off when I put them 1 meter from the window, actually they have to sit pretty near the window to ensure proper growth!

I bought a peace lily which I kept in my office with no windows (just typical fluorescent lighting) and it did pretty well. It stopped flowering but it did keep growing. I had it for about 8 months in that space and it was fine. I watered it once a week and never had an issue. I eventually gave it to my sister and the plant is now deceased. I recently bought another peace lily and gave it to my mom last week since her apartment is pretty low-light. Hopefully, this one fares better.

I've watched quite a few videos on low light plants. None these days seem to mention Aspidistras. We've had an Aspidistra for 43 years. It's lived in different light conditions in 3 different places. At present it's in a low light room about 15ft from a window and it's fine. Occasionally it will decide that a few leaves will die but the plant itself doesn't die. It always comes back. At present it has no dead leaves. Only water when the soil is dry and don't leave it sitting in water. It likes humidity so you can sponge or mist the leaves occasionally but it will survive without that. I've hardly ever done it. I do wipe the leaves occasionally to clear any dust off.

I grow my peace lily in plain water. Nothing fancy, no hydroponic hee-haw, just 'soft' tap water with a bit of Baby Bio plant food added with each watering. It's huge now, and really healthy, flowers often, etc. It's in a bright room, but on the wall that doesn't get direct sunlight. I've had it for about 6 years, and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger. I also grow my goosefoot plant in water, with a great deal of success. It doesn't climb, but gets bushy. I keep it next to the peace lily, as they seem to like the same conditions.

My fave has been my money tree. I saved it, bought it when it was rejected at the store, a 4 inch pot, dead leaves, almost dying, but it was calling me, I was like why will I buy it if I kill plants?. But I felt so bad for him, it was even on sale $1.99 so I just took my chances, yes they do need light by the window it does fine, been with me 2 years it is 2ft tall. After him, I guess all the love and care now I do great with plants, and since I pass the year and 2, now I feel comfortable buying more, all my plants I have now been with me after I bought the money tree, but they all require light, I AM looking for plants for living room now. Low light and will buy all the ones you listed.

My ZZ plant after 4 years in the darkest corner looked pretty sad. It’s leggy and the leaves became very light in color. Leaves became thin like paper, not succulent as before. It is still alive, but I’m not sure for how much longer if I continued putting it in that corner. So just wanted to put it out there that it would still need some rotation to keep it alive. I’ve placed mine in a brighter room now and hopefully it will recover well.

Good picks Nick, I have the ZZ plant sitting about 6 to 7 feet away from my two windows and it seems to be happy there, I would love to find a black ZZplant to put next to it, but for now it's on my wish list. I would also like to get both of those Calathias, I have the Medallion Calathia and find it is more fussy than my Rattlesnake and Triostar. I haven't had the pleasure of buying a Dracena yet, I'm still on the lookout for the perfect one, I love the structure of these and how they put them in the pots. I do have two peace lily's one being the common green one and the other is the Domino variegated, this one is one of my oldest plants it started out just tiny in a 4 inch pot some 15 or so years ago and is 5 times at least bigger and is also one of my favorite plants, I actually had a small one growing to the side that I popped into a pot for my daughter and she just loves it. Loved your video. I learned so much. I had no clue about the fluoride. This is the first time I’ve heard of it. I always wondered why some of my plants got that annoying burnt tip. Thanks so much! Your house must have the cleanest air!

I have all of the ones you've suggested! Or I have a couple of different varieties that you've mentioned. Good to know that I've got them in the right places in my home. Thanks for the informational video!

I’ve heard the saying, “the larger the leaf, the lower the light the plant can handle” meaning, the larger leaf size can absorb more of what little light there is rather than a small leafed plant. Do you think that’s true in general? I always have trouble with winter light in my house (living in Canada) being shorter days and far less intense than the other seasons. Finding plants that can take Canadian winter low light is a challenge but I press on! Thanks for all the advice! Love the first and last suggestions especially! 😀

Thanks for this. I have very few windows in my house and need to supplement lighting with plant lights. This isn't always possible, therefore, some areas of the house - with some ambient light from windows - are sadly bereft of greenery. But based on your video, I will definitely look to purchase at least one or two you recommended. Peace.

Here in North Philly, we call the flower on the Peace Lilly, "Preacher in the Pulpit". Don't know. Maybe they call it that everywhere.

These are all beautiful plants...I am surprised you did not include aspidistra, or Cast Iron plant...I love those and they do very well in low light and do not like direct sun at all...so many varieties of those too. Great video : )
