I did a poll on which video to do next and this top 5 LPS for beginners narrowly won out. So here it is! Let me know what your top 5 list looks like below.
Even as an experienced reefer I always appreciate the videos. I’d love to see some videos on your preferred propagation techniques on corals like Leptos or even Blastos. Gracias Than
That was really helpful, htnak you!! could you do a video about reefing for beginners please, like basic parameters, fish, coral,... I want to get into the reefing community but I also want to gather as much information as possible first
My fav is Doughnut Coral. Its just a giant mouth, and super easy imo. Been seeing more and more nice color variants popping up. I was sticking to the poor mans Elegance...the Duncan! I'm tempted to try an Aussie Elegance...
This may sound weird but I love your voice. It is very soothing and relaxing; pair that with a video of amazingly beautiful corals and this is what you get🙏 I’m a new hobbyist and I’ve had great success with Duncan’s, acans, and pocillapora. Thanks for the vid. #subscriber
I agree with the other 4 except the elegance corals. I found them difficult and they go downhill fast without much warning - videos and Reef2Reef threads show that even the more experienced hobbyists have some difficulty with them too.
Great video! I couldn't help but notice your CBBs in this video. I know you've mentioned them as a vital part of the TG clean up crew in the past. I would LOVE to see a CBB care video due to the fact they can be extremely picky eaters. Thanks for the great content!
When I tore my tank down; I removed all rock, flow, heater and most water. I had about 2” of water and a little bit of sand. I removed the sand and stagnant filthy water at least a week later. I found a living trumpet coral frag with two colorful heads. I’ve found blastos to be really tough, and easily except food.
I got a blastomussa merletti and a welsii. Man, how beautiful are these corals! It's satisfying to feed and see them eating. I feed them twice a week with squid pellets. They eat fast for a coral and start to be very colorful when I put these pellets food on their mouths. Great LPS coral.
Than! I love your videos! You are one of the reasons why I started my channel. If you ever get the chance from your schedule, Check it out and give me some feedback!
Help! My Elegance did well for 3 months then suddenly is retracted and black striations seem to be more blotchy. Water Parameters are solid/stable and I do 20% WCs every 10 days. Mixed reef and all other inhabitants look great. Maybe he’s an Indo? I’ve moved him under a rock ledge to see if he ‘s getting too much light. I use 2 Hydra 64s and a LED strip light, and flow is medium with a Sicce Extreme and Voyager. Any other suggestions?
Than I have a question is there two types of Duncan coral ? Branching and not branching I guess or is the grow pattern due to flow ? Just wondering thanks.
I suspect they are harvested in different regions and their growth is specific to those environments. There are some really diverse collection points in Australia.
Than. Thank you for another excellent video and thank you for all the work you do informing us about these wonderful creatures. Your depth of knowledge and commitment to the hobby is plain to see. Keep up the good work. From me and all of us in the reefing community. Best regards Phill (Birmingham UK)
Thanks Than you hit the nail on the head. My favorite is the Elegance followed by blastos. I had a Elegance in my 55 which well for a few weeks only. In my 40 gal over 25 yrs ago my Elegance was fantastic and grew large. This was when I was using tap water as I’d never heard of rodi.
What causes the bubbles to be trapped like that at 1:45? is it a substance secreted by the coral itself? or a film like build up from something in the tank? it looks harmless, and somewhat beautiful, but im not quite sure.....
Hello there I have a question can I go with corals and "seagrass stuff like that" together to create a natural environment in a 57 to 60 litre tank as I have not that much money to buy a huge one as I am just considering going in the hobby
Hi since you are a true expert. I have a question. I have a gold torch. It fully extends and looks healthy but I found one of the tip has a brown thing at the top of tip. There is no round tip. I am concerned about it. Can you help me out what that is?. I can send you the pic if you want to see it. Thanks
You make some of the best coral videos out there!! Everytime I'm Looking into a coral I go to your videos to learn as much details as I can! Thanks for being so informative!
Hey Dan. .....love what u do and all the knowledge u have and continue to give. ...one of the best grow houses ive seen by far...Yet i dont understand how u allowed urself to add elegance coral to ur list especially for beginners....that coral is so sometimy I peraonally wouldnt put it on any list to buy unless u guess want one...just my opinion.... yet keep up the great job hoping i can get to that level one day👍💯
Of all the corals we keep here elegances are one of the ones I never have to worry about. Over the past 10 years we maybe have lost fewer than a handful ever and we've seen thousands. Did you have a bad experience with them?
That is one of those corals ive heard and seen sooooo many horror stories about i honestly have NEVER personally kept one in my tank....NEVER see amd healthy ones and if i do its only a day or two and then before it leaves the shop its dead....Yet like i said LOVE the grow house and so much more positive u actually care about the animals in ur vat's Not knocking u by far was just curious as to why u added that coral to ur list....ALOT. of ppl say zoa's are easy too...yet that is. The one coral that DOESNT. grow for me ever..lmao😁😁
Oh yea and i just noticed auto correct fixed/messed up ur name....Lmao i did type Than and it replaced it with Dan 😁...Keep up the great work....like i say hope to reach that level one day👍
i saved my Duncan from petco i guess in good karma he gave me green tips thats so cool i didt know its rare if your interested ill train u a head for something ??? i can prove it too that hes green tip !!!!
Some can be very easy while some are really delicate. There are a lot of different types of plate corals that all get thrown together into a single category. My favorite are Diaseris plates that can even be propagated easily.
@@tidalgardens Not sure which one I bought. But it is really striving well. It is bright orange with yellow tentacles. It is the shorter tentacle version. I feed it mysis shrimp 2-3 times a week. And is doing well with lower right and flow.
I've been watching this guy for about 4 months since I started on this hobby. Amazing advice and I have followed everything to point. My Duncan has been closed now for 2 weeks and I'm worried. I was an idiot and spent a lot of money on the biocube 32 and realized 2 months after how garbage the lighting is and was hoping for advice. My Duncan has been closed for 2 weeks now sometimes coming out slightly at night. My zoanthid, hammer and acropora are doing great and I'm trying to revive my platygyra brain which it seems to be after moving it much higher up closer to the light lately. I'm very new to the hobby and tank is 4 months old. I'm spot on at all water levels, water changes, and flow from forums and research I've done. But my Duncan will barely open still. I know they can be moody but I'm trying to be patient but a lot of time and money has gone into this amazing hobby and any help would be appreciated :)
*I love Blastos. They are tough hungry pigs. I had one colony that was perfectly happy in the shade. *I had a partial trumpet that was still alive after I broke-down a tank. It was living in 2” of unheated silt at the bottom of my sandbed for almost 1 week. I placed it in another tank after I found it. *Bubble Corals. They seem hardy for me and love to eat. Unfortunately they can be rather aggressive and their colors bland; however, they almost look like an alien. *Duncan Coral. *Acan Lords. Awesome colors.
You should talk with rookie reefer. He says he talked a guy that frags scolys and he fragged one into 9 pieces and they take about 3 Years to go back to round. Idk I’m NOT cutting my scoly 😂
I used to have a SUPER RARE neon green duncan, but by emerald crab (which was purple) almost ate the whole thing, and there was a weird period of time where it SUFFERED, then i lost the whole thing while I had to move the tank, as I had to move houses for school. :( And I have been looking for one in stores and online, and there wasn't one that was for sale for miles. *sigh
Hi. I’m a poverty stricken noobie who has no business getting into an expensive hobby like this. May I ask if these 5 corals are affordable for the rare financially challenged reefer like myself?
I love your videos but I completely disagree with a few of these, elegance is not a beginner coral and having blastos at number one is absurd. I work at a fish store and a tell you what customers with little knowledge can easily keep alive... these are not it
Hi since you are a true expert, I want to send you a photo of my gold torch. The tip should have round milky color under white light and turns into blue under acrylic light. But one of tip has a tiny brown thing. There is no round tip. I am very concerned about it. I have no idea what it is. Can you help me out?
Hopefully soon! We just sold a few of the red and blue ones so if you were looking for those they vanished shortly after this video went up. I hope to have frags of the red and yellow ones later this week. Some of these corals sell out fast when we offer them.
We struggle with those right now (Micromussa lord not so much Acan bowerbanki) so I couldn't in good conscience recommend them as an easy coral. It's great to see many other people suggest them on this list because I have a feeling they do much better in a hobbyist setting than a greenhouse coral farm setting.
Anyone who is experienced plz answer this, do I have to start with soft corals? I’m 14 so I don’t have the most experience in the hobby but ik the general stuff about lps. Thx!
One of the best RU-vid Top posts I've ever seen. Spot on Bro. Been an Fish Guy for about 10 years now and have a 225 in a storage and looking to get her started. Found this Gem.
