When he mentioned that certain "mainline protestant churches" are big tent with any variety of unbiblical teachings it just brought to mind how important Biblical Church discipline based on strong Christian doctrine really is.

“Relative” is definitely the right adjective to use for how conservative these denominations are. I came back to faith in what was considered one of the most conservative episcopal churches in the country. It was the most liberal church I have ever attended.

Thanks for the shoutout- to the LCMS - and thanks to Joel and Doug Wilson I am working hard to gain PostMil and Theonomy traction in the LCMS church I am at (most conservative church in my area for 20 miles). All the LCMS guys in my sphere - are following Canon Plus and Boniface Option type stuff. Also, due to the craziness of the ELCA - in reaction the LCMS is “cringing” conservative. Lastly, the LCMS has the extensive Christian School ground game - to build Christendom 2.0 - as it further moves conservative!

@@MountainofYahwehI am in the LCMS as well and admire Pastors Webbon and Wilson, but isn’t our theology explicitly amil? There is often a lot of crossover but I don’t know that postmil theology fits in with our confessions. Still, you are right, we have the largest number of Christian schools in the US after the Roman Church I believe. I pray that we can ward off liberalism again like we did in Seminex, though what happened with the Large Catechism last year worries me greatly.

My father was Methodist. A lot of the conservatives, including my dad, left and went to Anglican. I've tried to talk to him about coming back to the Baptist side but as reformed, like myself. His wife was very Catholic, so that's one argument why he won't and he claims Baptists are legalistic (I guess there was backlash from when he left my mom so he seems to want nothing to do at all with anything "Baptist"). He's now just fine with female "pastors."

I can't wait to listen to you guys. Just off of the first 30 seconds I can say I have my doubts about the Episcopal and United Methodist Church, the latter of which I grew up in. I'm now mostly Baptist with a few Presbyterian beliefs, and my grandmother is still Methodist(and a great Christian Woman), but goes to an independent Methodists church that split from the United Methodists. It is perhaps better to win those over first before the United Methodist, but I'm eager to see what the conversation is about. I have to be honest. I do often miss the more structured form of Methodists worship in terms of practice sunday to sunday.

I think the question of whether these mainline denominations are worth fighting for comes down to whether or not you agree with the theology behind them. My grandfather was an Episcopal priest who entered communion with the Roman Catholic Church in the early 1980s. On one hand, he joined the Catholic Church because of how liberal the Episcopal Church was, but on the other hand, he also believed that the Catholic Church was the one true Church and he had always wanted the Episcopal Church to re-enter communion with Catholicism. It was clear by the 1970s, with their female priesthood, gay marriages, and botched apostolic succession that this was just never going to happen, so he jumped off the train. If he didn't believe that Catholicism was the true Church that all Protestants should be moving toward, perhaps he would've stayed and fought for the Episcopal Church. It's a question Episcopalians, ELCA, United Methodists, etc. need to ask for themselves, as I'm sure many had. By the way, the theory about nuns playing with baby Jesus dolls being the foundation of modern feminism seems very crazy to me. I don't see what is feminist about nuns having baby Jesus dolls, although I agree that it is weird.

Former Nazarene here...Nazarene have been ordaining women from the beginning and are around 115ish years old. Historically there were not a large percentage of women ordained until recent years. I would guess that if one were to graph the increase in women ordination in the Nazarene church and the increase in false teachings within the denomination you would have a very similar graph. It the Episcopal Church was important in the founding of the country, it was most important in Virginia. In Colonial times, the Episcopal church was THE "official" state church of Virginia. All others (Lutherans, Presbyterians, Baptists, etc) were prohibited. My ancestors were Quakers who came down to Virginia in the 1700s, and I don't know how they survived! Maybe they met secretly, I don't know--but according to historian David Barton, you could be imprisoned or potentially killed in colonial Virginia if it was found you were anything other than Anglican

Love his concern for the survival of historical mainstream institutional CIVILIZATIONAL Christianity. This what we used to call “Christendom”. Unfortunately for him, the oldest largest most significant mainstream body of Christendom is the Catholic Church. Not to mention Catholicism knows something about “Reconquista”. But seriously, If you’re a Protestant who really cares about recovering institutional civilizational Christendom, you’re on the path to Rome. Let’s look at the numbers… Luth, Calv, Anglicans and Methodists count for 13% of Christians. That’s “Classical/Historical” Protestantism. But 20% of Christians are either Baptists, Pentecostal or Nondenom. Low church modern Protestantism is the majority. All together Prots count for ~36% of Christians. non-Catholic Eastern Churches are home to ~11% of Christians. 9% of Christians are Eastern Orthodox. With half of that being the Russian Church and the other half located primarily in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Compare that to the 53% of Christians who belong to the worldwide Catholic Church. We are the institution that was left behind. This fleeing from Rome coincides with the fall of Christendom. Let’s just be real

I'm Baptist and I agree that trying to save 'historical' Protestantism is losing. If I ever left Protestantism I'd go be Catholic. I have to respectfully disagree with Joel when he says that if he baptizes 5 children who are born to regenerate Christian parents and are born in the church, and 5 adults, mostly young adults in their 20's, for whom the veil has been temporarily lifted by God so they can see the Father, Son and Holy Spirit for what it really is, the odds are greater that the first five will remain regenerate and avoid apostasy than the latter 5. My experience, both lived and online, has shown me a shocking number of kids who were born in the church and serious born again, evangelical believers, to the point where they were evangelizing for Christ as early as their preteens, and not due to the influence of their parents, but because they were that ON FIRE for Jesus, then they reach H.S. or College and do a complete 180 apostasy. Not exclusively, but especially H.S. to College age girls. I've lost count of the girls who gave me their testimony, Christian since birth to atheists and sexual deviants (strippers etc.), and it breaks my heart every time. AND YET, I took advantage of girls like that into my 20's when I got saved, and now, till this day, I'm still remorseful about it. Believe me, I have a lot to repent for, but I know WAY MORE kids who were raised in the church and went 100% depraved, atheist, apostate, than people who came to Christ after getting beat to a pulp by this demonic world, and you couldn't get most of them to return to the world if their lives depended on it. They know it's FOOLS GOLD, while too many kids born in the church look at their friends seemingly having fun and get tired of depriving themselves. Aside from the kids I saw it with in H.S., which was A LOT, stories of that same apostasy are endless online. "It's the sick who need a physician." Jesus was referencing a double meaning: Physical & Spiritual. The latter KNEW they needed Jesus as much as the former. Meantime the Sanctimonious, chosen Pharisees conspired to have Christ crucified. Lastly, just watch the atheist testimonies on RU-vid. There are more than a few and it will sicken you when you hear they were raised in the church. I wasn't even raised in the church and it sickens me! I wish I had that advantage in life, instead of a mob father in prison. My father went to prison when I was an infant and I didn't see him again until H.S.

Comparing apples to oranges. If you really think about it, both groups have people who have had to go through difficult experiences in order to finally turn to Christ. One group lived in sin for most of their youth. Another group has to learn the hard way about sin. Both needed to reach a low point to either believe in Christ or return to Christ. You have no idea how your life would have turned out if you would have grown up in the church. You would probably have made the same mistakes because, having grown up a sheltered life in church, you wouldn't have appreciated your salvation. You would have taken it for granted. In other words, sadly, most people have to get things out of their system, so to speak, before they come to the point where they realize that there is no happiness in world'y pleasures. That is why the parable of the Prodigal Son exists. Growing up in church is no guarantee of a perfect life. Satan always attacks those in the church first. He doesn't worry about those who are living in darkness, because they are already lost.

@@2GunRock I never said I agreed with his point of view. I was disagreeing with your view. Your view is the opposite of his. But I say that BOTH groups of people will face temptations, trials, tribulations, etc. Both groups can be susceptible to losing faith if they do not lean on the Lord with all of their hearts. Though we may not be certain at all times which church member is a true believer, we do have the assurance that the Lord will save those who are His. That is why we should not make judgements about our brethren. God is dealing with each believer in His own way. Sometimes we see the fruit of our preaching immediately. Other times it may take a person their whole life to finally turn to God. But the seed has been planted. Remember the parable of the seeds. Some fall by the wayside, some fall on shallow soil, some are chocked by weeds, some find root in good soil. In the day of Judgement, we will be surprised by who we see in Heaven. I don't take any of this personal. I'm a non-denominational evangelical. In the 1980's they were fighting the culture war harder and in larger numbers than every denomination combined. The "Christian Coalition" was comprised mostly of evangelicals. Not exclusively, but they were definitely on the front-lines! IMO the Cultural Marxists would have flipped America as far back as the 80's if not for the Christian Coalition supporting Reagan in the tens of millions. After Reagan they were demoralized by Bush I & II and lost their passion for politics, then came back for Trump in 2016 followed by the stolen election of 2020. They know it was robbed. I just hope that doesn't demoralize them again for 2024. Go look at old Christian Coalition rallies for Reagan. They look like Trump rallies in 2016. That said, much of that older generation has passed-on and America is more atheist than ever, that's why you'll never see another 49 States landslide like Reagan had in 84, or even Nixon's landslide when Christians first became politically active due to their disdain for the counter-culture (Cultural Marxists).

Christians are actually called to judge (albeit, righteously, per John 7:24). I don’t always agree on everything here. But on the meat and potatoes of the Gospel; i.e. the doctrines of grace, I do. I guess I’d just say the Bible isn’t a salad bar where we can take just what we like or what the world likes. I can’t speak for literally each and every person who attends a historical mainline church, but no, for the vast majority: United Church of Christ, Episcopal, Evangelical Lutheran, Presbyterian USA…those are not churches.
