Great list, well informed. I've used all the mics on this list and plenty of other candidates, and it's nice to see someone endore great stuff that isn't always talked about but holds its own in professional environments at any budget. Not to mention, presented very well :)
Thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it! I'm always keeping an eye out for mics that hit above their price point. If you have any that you think are especially great, I'd love to hear about them in case they're ones I've never tried!
I have some recomendations in this price range : Dynamic - sE V7x or dynacaster LDC - Austrian Audio OC16 SDC - Mic-parts Snare mic (km 84 clone for high SPL) RIbbon - sE Voodoo VR1
Yeah, the Voodoos are great! I'm borrowing a pair from a friend right now (to appear in a video soon...), and I've been quite impressed by them! I've definitely been curious about both Austrian Audio and a few of the mic parts builds. I'm looking forward to trying them out at some point!
Hi! Cool video, nice to have some tested options presented. I use an AT2020 from 2005 still for my voice work... great workhorse mic. I wouldn't call it THE choice for voice acting and voiceover work under 500, but at the time I got it for $100 paired with a small diaphragm condenser. It's almost 20 years old and still going strong, and I think produces decent audio for dollars.
I'm glad you liked the video! I don't think I've ever used the 2020, but I've heard a handful of people say good things about it, ESPECIALLY for a hundred bucks! I'll have to try one out at some point.
The MkI has actually given me a bit of trouble on kick out. It sounds great on lightly playing drummers, but when I've tried it on kick for hard hitting drummers, it crunches up a bit. I've heard of other people really liking their Warblers on kick, so I'm not sure if they're using a different version which handles it better or if they're just not recording people who smash the kick drum. I just reached out to the owner of 3U this morning (feel free to email him with any questions, he's always been super helpful to me) asking if the MkII would handle it better, but I haven't heard back yet (I'll let you know once I do!).
@@tvd1188 Guosheng from 3U just emailed me back and said he'd recommend the 3U GZ47fet for kick out. Looks like they probably run in the $600 ish price range.
My two favorite large diaphragm condenser mics under $500 (barely under) are the Roswell Mini K67x (the one with the transformer) and the SE Electronics SE4400 (not the 4400A). To awesome mics that that are great on just about everything and sound amazing.
I've been really curious about the Roswell stuff! Haven't gotten a chance to try one yet. And yeah, I've been impressed by every sE mic I've tried. Great value on those!
Hey man, I haven't even watched the video yet, but I've got a request and you might be the guy to make it happen. I own more than 1 studio, and combined on paper the gear value in all of my studios is worth well over a million dollars if bought new for typical retail prices. I've paid a fraction of a fraction of the new price, because I buy used whenever I can at places I'm able to return the gear if something is catastrophically broken. Microphones that are well above $2,000-3,000 I find used for under a grand all the time. Microphones that are around a grand I find for a couple hundred bucks. These aren't broken, dented, beaten up pieces either. Everything I get has to be in great to excellent condition. I find rackmount Neve preamps with EQ for under a grand, in fact I'm looking at a pair of them I found for $750 each, (that's in the same price territory as a Warm Audio or Heritage Audio clone.) I don't find these deals every day, but often enough to be able to build out world class studios relatively fast. I'd say a few times a week I find holy grail pieces of gear for unbelievably cheap prices. I don't make RU-vid videos myself so I'd like to find someone to collaborate with who has an audience to show them how and where I find my stuff so they can spread the word. If people knew they could have top shelf stuff below budget prices I think a lot of stress would be relieved.
