My new "surplus market" is the Police trade in stuff. It's still reasonably priced and in some cases they're basically giving away .40 cal Glocks for 200 bucks. I really like the stuff that's marked "For Police and Government Use Only".
I almost bought a 5906 for $280 on sportsman's guide. By the time I contacted my FFL to make sure they were taking transfers, it was sold out. Can confirm on the .40 glocks. Got a g22.4 for $299 with tritium sights, like new. Put a .357 sig barrel in and it's my woods gun
I had a Fudd at at gun show try to sell me a MAS 36 with a beat up stock and a shit ton of rust for $700 by saying "the bore on this French rifle is in great condition because they surrendered before they could use it" I told him the bore is irrelevant with the current condition of the rifle. Later on another Fudd was selling a Finnish Mosin for $600 it had holes drilled into the chamber for an optics mount that was painful to see.
I got a 1903/38 Turkish Mauser years ago and its probably the best shooting Mauser in my collection. Bolt is glassy smooth, trigger breaks like a glass rod, and shoots a tight group. I held off on getting Turkish Mausers for a long time because a lot of people said they were junk.
Just bought a G-11 from edelweiss arms, subsidiary of KRISS. Excellent gun for $615 shipped. Came with sling, muzzle cover and in a long rifle case* that the G11 actually fits in. Couldn’t recommend them more for any Swiss rifle.
Long time Swedish Mauser fan. Have their target variants as well and just started hand loading for them. Factory ppu and Sellier and Bellot ammo can be found for dirt cheap these days too, in comparison to other full size military calibers
I own two Caranos. One TS and one cavalry carbine. Luckily, they're both in good condition and are pretty accurate. I actually got the ammo a bit before grabbing the first Carcano. This was back when the TS model was only $250.
@@thEannoyingE No, the one he allegedly used was the M91/38, I believe. I own the M91/24 TS and cavalry variant with the fixed bayonet. Anyone who's more versed on the subject, correct me if I'm wrong. They're neat little rifle. I love how the clip slides out the bottom after chambering the last round. Very satisfying.
Same, I got a 1916 TS from Gander mountain before they stopped selling guns. $250 out the door for a WW1 pattern carbine. (Didn’t even have the side sling swivel mounts)
Nice job Mike! Picked up a M96 Swede all matching, beautiful wood, this past year. Here in the northeast, they are approaching 600 bucks quickly. If you want one, don’t hesitate.
I purchased my Swedish 96 Mauser from Woolworths for under $60.00 many years ago. Love it. It's one of my favorites, shoots flat, and is very accurate.
The Argentine M1891 Mauser was my first gun in the 60's. Paid $30 for it at Sears. Years later I added the Model 1909 Mauser also in 7.65x51mm, loved it too.
Great video Mike, as always. These video do influence the market and it's silly to think they don't. Not just you obviously, all the other big RU-vidrs influence this too. Arisakas were sub 250 bucks 1-2 years ago and now they're selling for 650-800+ all day long and I attribute that to people making videos on them.
I really dig my Turk Mauser, ever since i was shown my dads original Swede Mauser i was hooked. Got mine in December for a solid 400. Stock is great and the bore is perfect! Im glad i found the mil surp hobby, but im kinda sad i found it so late lol, prices have gone crazy
I found a 43 Turkish Mauser in really great shape at a local gun shop for $300. Thanks for the recommendation. It’s not numbers matching (bolt is different) but still a good pickup.
Lately I've found a few good deals centerfire systems did have k31 rifles for $399 but it was missing the magazine. As for finding deals in my neck of the woods most Enfields are around $600 and I bought a Russian captured 98k mauser for $650 and that's here in Kentucky
I just got a carcano cavalry carbine for my birthday. My friends said they got it from rti for around 200. It’s a bit beat up, but still has both sling mounts and some rifling. I’m surprised given that it’s production year is 1900. I’m excited to use at least half of the 20 rounds Ive scrounged up at the range.
I managed to get a beautiful 1908 Brazilian Mauser for $450 at my local gun show about 6 months ago. I believe it was made in 1910. Besides the marks from where it was dropped or sat on the ground, you would never guess the thing is 110+-years-old. Brazilian crest is in beautiful condition, only ever so slight faded in some spots. I love how it says, "United States of Brazil," which I believe they dropped way back in the 1960's. Everything is original, except the bolt. The stock is in impossibly great condition, I thought it had to be a replacement. Nope. Even still has "7MM" carved into it. Incredible shooter. Accurate, with very little recoil. It's become my second favorite gun, just below my Russian Makarov. I don't think you'll be able to find one in that condition for under $500, though. The guy I bought it from said to me straight up, he knew nothing about it. He made a trade with one of his friends, and the Mauser was included. He was just looking to get rid of it because he had no room for it. I would strongly advise any Mauser fan to buy one if the opportunity presents itself, so long as the price isn't outrageous, of course.
I just bought a Swedish M96 from a coworker last week for $400. Dated 1907, it's numbers matching except cleaning rod and magazine floor plate. Sweet fiddleback stock and great bore. A nice used sling was $30 and a bayonet was $100. It came with (2) old boxes of Norma 156 gr bottlenose soft points, but I've ordered several boxes of S&B FMJ from my local gun shop for $22 per box. Thanks for the great video!
Hey Mike, WI born MN guy here. I've lucked in to a few decent deals lately. Argentine cav carbine with crest, a beautiful tiger stripe 1903 m96, no4 mk1* long branch, a yugo "capture" k98 mis labeled as a turkish Mauser (from cabelas), and a k31. Except the m96 which came with a bayonet, all sub $500. There's still some reasonable deals out there. Thanks for the great content.
My favorite surplus rifle has always been the Mosin m44. Partly because you used to be able to get them for under 100$ everywhere and if you know what you're looking for .you can't find a straighter shooting rifle. There's a reason the top snipers in history used the Mosin. Simo hayha the highest scoring sniper in history had access to mousers and Italian rifles and pretty much anything he wanted...and he still used his old iron sight Mosin. My second favorite used to be the 617 Argentine but those aren't really surplus anymore lol. I can't remember the last time I seen anyone get a bulk order. More than 20 years ago now.
Hey Mike I was inspired by a video a ways back on you channel about yugoslavian mausers. I'm looking at an M24/47, but instead of "Preduzece 44" on the side of the action, it's stamped with what looks like "3ABOD 44". Any thoughts? How could I post a pic of the stamping?
I have what used to be a Swedish Mauser, found it at a show and the guy had already changed the stock, stripped the barrel, milled the rear receiver and was missing a couple small parts. I paid a whopping 80 beans for it, just mounted a scope and fixed a few issues and it's my son's first hunting rifle, I may have snuck it out and shot an oryx with it also.
3 years ago I bought a Turkish Mauser for $185. I remember the first gun I ever bought in 2002 when I turned 18 was a Mosin Nagant which was $85 at the time at Big 5.
Great video Mike. We appreciate you. You need to make a video concerning wether a parts kit build is actually surplus. There are many variables and it can go both ways.
@@uttermostvids631 that's the way I'm leaning with it. But a lot of people have different opinions. The way I see it is if it has parts that are surplus then it can be collectable. The market over the past 20 or so years has proved this.
I actually have an M93 Turk mauser that was upgraded in the 30's, that still has the magazine cutoff on the side. Hard to come across one of those. Think I paid 100 dollars of so for it about 2 or 3 months ago. Private sale.
Hey I just found a k.kale mauser on gunbroker kinda impulse bought it for 260 dollars lol... it's missing the barrel bands and upper handgaurd any sources that you know of that would have those parts?? Or any knowledge on what military stocks a k.kale m38 would fit in?
I remember paying $130 around 2015 for a complete Mosin kit that included ammo pouches, bayonet, an oil can, bolt adjustment tool for the firing pin, etc. Wish I bought more if I know the prices were going to inflate to these crazy amounts.
Hey Mike! Back when I was a younger lad, I could buy SKS from the local B&M new in cosmoline for 59 bucks, the used SMLE's were around the same. Man how times have changed!
Solid choices for sure, I picked up a Carcano 91/28 TS for myself and am quite happy with it. But lets say I want a Type 38 Arisaka carbine now, does anyone know where to look for one for a reasonable price without having to trudge through "I know what I got" on gunbroker?
Some beautiful examples you have. The Argentine Mauser is near pristine. The Swedish Mausers are my favourite versions with the M38 short rifle at the top of my list.
I’m always a little confused when Mike cites prices. For example, when he says that Swedish Mausers are 350-400 dollars, where is he finding that deal? In person? P2P sales? Asking not because I think he’s wrong but because I wanna find those deals lol.
Glad to say that I've got a Mosin Nagant M91/30, a Carcano M91/38, a Carcano Cavalry Carbine (was my fathers from when he was a boy back in the 60's), and a Mauser M98. Love all of them. They shoot great, are very accurate, and a couple are rather hard hitting (the Mosin especially, it's been trimmed down to a 16 1/4" barrel). But the Carcano can be difficult to find ammo for (PPI is the only place I can find 6.5x52mm ammo for it), but recoil is rather mild and it is a pleasure to shoot.
I have an argentine mauser and they are good rifles, but the ammunition has recently been very expensive if you can find it at all. Nearly all 7.65 x 53 Argentine is out of stock unfortunately. But if you know where to buy some ammo, please let me know.
I skipped on a Argentine Mauser years ago, kicking myself for not getting it. The wood was beautiful. I just bought a Ballester Molina and well.. Guess I need a rifle to go along with it.
what's the difference between the swedish m96 and the turkish m38? Other than caliber, they look really similar. I have a turkish m38 and was looking at this video for any "ideas" on what to get next and I see the swedish mausers pop up occasionally, they just look so similar I'm confused at trying to convince myself on getting one (although I am definitely teetering, which is why I'm asking for any excuse to get one XD )
In my experience Moison Nagants vary in quality but most are easily upgradable. You can float the barrel putting a thin shim between the action and the stock and carefully grinding out the hanguard and finished is not noticable. When buying one look at the muzzle as it was common to redrill the barrel to correct crown problems. There are aftermarket triggers but many are corrected by making sure the trigger screws are snug.
Just noticed the cleaning rod at the end of your example of the M38 looks a bit different to mine. Perhaps the rearmament of the 1903s saw some get new rods and others not? Now I’m self conscious about my rod.
I own tons of different surplus firearms. One of my favorites is my 6.5x50 Arisaka type 44. Unfortunately it’s been sporterized , what really sucks is that the chrysanthemum is intact. I’m sure it was done fairly early after the war and these guns weren’t really expected to be that collectible,,,who knows?? Dust cover is gone, which isn’t surprising, guess the Japanese got rid of them quickly too noisy,,turned down bolt handle, wood from the top has been made into design in the stock. Whoever did it did do a nice job but wished it was original. The person I bought it from had no idea what it was and I didn’t pay much for it. I’ve read that some were rechambered to 257 Roberts. Anyway, I still enjoy it. Really enjoy your channel Mike, definitely one of my favorites!
The Argentine Mauser is nice for hunters that reload .. because they can run regular. 30 cal bullets just perfectly and will feed any shape of bullet due to its magazine design
I was lucky enough to get into milsurps at the best time, the mid-laten90's into the early 2000's. Back then, we had $29 M38 Turkish Mausers, $39 Mosin 91/30, $69-99 Swede Model 96, various 8mm Mausers less than $250, M1 Carbines for less than $300 unless it was a desirable manufacturer like Winchester or Rock-Ola. Then there was the ammo. I REALLY miss this. 8mm Turkish Mauser was $79/1440 rounds, Russian 7.62x39 $55/1000, Russian steel case .223 $79/1000, and even brass case, boxer primed, non corrosive 7.62x51 NATO made in Venezuela by CAVIM was $150/1000. And the best part? All these prices included shipping! I'm far from rich, but I wish I had the money I have now back then!
Hey Mike would you know any places online to find 7.65x53 Argentine ammo? I'd love to have more of it and enjoy my Argentines more. Would appreciate any tips from anyone else here as well👍
I got a sporterized 1891 argentine mauser carbine for 330 dollars, it's a beautiful gun that works well but the ammo is scarce so I kind of regret buying it due to lack of ammo I hope I can find somewhere to get the ammo. If anybody knows where to get some ammo please tell me. Edit: sportsman's warehouse recently restocked their ammo and I bought some, I've seen other places that say they sell the ammo for $15-$20 but they don't have it in stock and how legit those sites is questionable, so buying it for 28 bucks is good for now.
The Swedish Mauser is definitely my favorite for all the reasons given. The brass disc on the stock keeps track of the condition of the barrel and the firearm overall as they were meticulous in their upkeep Most Swedish Mausers are found with good metal due to the Swedes using a higher percentage of copper in their steel. The finest of the Mausers.
I bought my Turkish Mauser for $280 and I have yet to shoot it but the stock is really good besides 3 cracks in the stock, the bore is also pretty good. A lot of life left in the rifle.
My grandpa had a 1891 argentine mauser it was pristine except for the stock was broke. Everything else was excellent. My mom sold it and im not happy about it
I picked up a swedish 1896 last month. It's absolutely beautiful, made by Mauser. Marked Mauser Oberndorf, 1899. I can't wait to take it out and shoot it with my Husqvarna M38!
I have thos old timer at a gunshow that always has insane prices. He has mosins just 91/30s nothing special ww2 run of the mill rifles for $700 but he had an egyptian Rasheed for $350 a Yugoslavia sks for $300 an all matching portuguese contract mauser k98 for $500 and fn49s for $600 each...... deals can be sound just gotta hunt. Good video Mike just wanted to add my experience
I've heard rumors and talks of Ethiopia opening up their surplus stockpiles to the markets. I may be wrong but I've heard a lot of people getting their hands on Italian Papal breachloads. Don't think they'll come on the markets as cheap as the Mosins did or the Carcanos, but really cool and definitely worth a pickup if you are a collector.
Where are you seeing the Mosins for 300-400 and the Swedish M38 for 200? The lowest I can find them online is over $700. Is there a site you recommend to find them at those prices?
the issue is that you're looking online for sure. I do doubt you'd find a m38 for 200, yet even with gun prices being high in georgia, my local ffl just had 10+ refurbed m91/30 mosins for $400 each with a bayonet. the best thing you can do is look around at gun shops all around your area
I have been a pistol shooter all my life, i want to get into mil/surp rifles. I love the fact these are affordable. BUT,,,where can I find these rifles, any web site? etc.
