I agree to some extent with you.The reason Kenyans and other countries rate Toyota highly "overrated" in your own words is resale value & reliability. My colleagues bought an allion in 2015 for 1.2 and has never visited a mechanic..the car has never had issues...sold it last year for 800k....
I applaud your rating approach but terms like "overrated" mean that you are comparing. Merely comparing used car prices is not really informative because people are trying to make a judgement about the whole package including reliability, spares availability, resale value (and therefore depreciation), etc. Can I suggest that you can do another video in which you compare several different attributes and that way get the true "best value for money." True we don't have a company like Warranty Direct with its objective reliability ratings but there are proxies; no of ads for particular makes on sites like Cheki (indicative of demand), no of complaints on various chats about particular cars, dealers, insurers, AA of Kenya purchase data, and possibly KRA as well. It's a lot of work I know, and I'm not paying the bill. I enjoy watching your videos. Keep it up Erick!
Overrated is meaning their practicability, price, usability and appeal. Car prices in Kenya are just driven by the importation ban and not necessarily market forces.
All Toyotas are overpriced...You forgot to mention Runx/Allex, I see them going for 650K and it is a 2002 model. I do not dispute they are reliable, dependable and cheap to maintain, but that price is a rip off. I think fair price should be 350-400
Wokabi, I am a great fun of your review but this, I tend to differ. When you say a car is overrated, what do you use as a benchmark? Price only can't be the base because it has a driving force called demand which is also subject to other qualities. To me a good scores list would be a determinant.
Good point. Walk kirinyaga road looking for brake pads for that Volvo. Or a malfunctioning throttle. A car should be ranked based on maintenance cost not purchase value.
1.Oil Leaks. This is the common issue of the 111 series. The causer is bad cylinder head gasket. 2. Loss of power, high fuel consumption. The root of evil is the air flow sensor. 3. All M111 series engines are quite noisy and featured by a short sparkplug life. Too many sensors =too many problems and that is why there are NO Mercedes on the list of reliable vehicles.
@@rodneyagesa1851 I disagree with you on all fronts esp when it has to do with " high fuel consumption or noisy engines" M111 on the W124, W202 and W 210 platforms are cars still on the road after 20 - 25 plus years. The makers must atleast be doing something RIGHT
@@bobbzkw1 those are not my remarks, they are from an international review and to counter that show me your data. Give me one report that has a Mercedes on the list of the top ten reliable vehicle. Maybe if you drive your M111 Mercedes like a 90 year old granny you might just get it to function past two decades.
Premio 260 that I had was actually very luxurious, the quality of the interior is too good. Upgraded to a lexus that, yeah moves faster and has a better budge but I'll actually miss the premio. Added bonus, very easy to maintain
Boss, most Toyotas are extremely reliable. And their replacement parts extremely cheap plus any regular mechanic mwitu can fix these cars. People are buying RELIABILITY not FANCIFUL PERFORMANCE FIGURES. Performance without Reliability plus complexity, that's just pure horror.
I totally agree with you . Here in the USA 🇺🇸, the most expensive cars are TOYOTA ‘s . They are reliable , cheap to maintain , and last very long . A lot of people don’t necessarily go for the looks and try to impress
In the video we have affirmed that yes the Toyos are very reliable, very as a matter of fact but our opinion is compared to the price tags on those cars mentioned we tend to think it's a pure rip off especially within the Kenyan market where in some cases car dealers create artificial shortages to make a killing but since we have been sold the idea that if not Toyota then what? I will give an example with the vits big rip off then we tried the demio which by then was being sold at a reasonable price fresh import then once people confirmed they were good prices short up later came in the Honda fit same story prices short up! There are equally awesome reliable cars at all the price points given the problem is there has been s lot of misinformation on this brands for long that not many are willing to try
Whatever you have explained here its a clear indication of demand and supply which also happens in all other products like houses, plots you can name them.Once a product has a high demand its price must be high simple economics.Don't just say the cars are overpriced cause people are buying them at the 'overpriced' value give us the reason as to why people are still buying them at that high price.Make a consultation to car valuers and also let them give a reason as to why the cars are 'overpriced' as you state. With this video I beg to differ with your review.
Totally agree on this one. The Toyota reliability, resale value, availability of parts, no if mechanics that can repair the car is unrivaled. I would love to see a direct compariosn of a harriers vs an Audi Q5 in all aspect from price of basic things like side mirrors, bumpers, plugs, service cost etc then compare performance n let everyone choose their headache. I would really love the classy Benz, Audis etc but the maintenance Vs a Toyota are waaaay waay apart. For me wacha ninunue Fielder if not a Subaru.
Toyotas are indeed the leading car brand globally, but, isn't it an oxymoron to say, "Toyotas are reliable", yet at the same time say, "and I buy them at the expensive price tag because you can find parts easily and there are mechanics to fix your car almost anywhere"? If a car is reliable, why the need to anticipate replacing parts frequently and having a mechanic at your beck and call? One big beef I have about Toyotas is they are absolutely uncomfortable, especially for long journeys. Another issue, especially for second-hand imports into Kenya, don't know about other countries, Toyotas are not that safe. Can't compare to European cars. Chances of death or serious injury in a Toyota are much higher than even cars like Subaru or Honda. So, I really don't understand why people love them so much.
Ask yourself why all terrorist organizations must feature Toyotas in their armada!!simply put they are Beasts of burden...basic maintenance and it will run forever. All that will result in high demand hence the the high price tag.
@@its_me1276 Toyota's ownership of Subaru doesn't influence or change Subaru's standards including safety. Safety is one thing Toyota should learn from Subaru, however, let's give Toyota the benefit of the doubt, because Lexus, which is by Toyota, is one of the safest cars in the World. I just don't understand why they compromise when it comes to Toyotas.
@@its_me1276 that's not the point. The point is toyota are bland...boring. Toyota is tha single largest shareholder of Fuji Heavy Industries at 20% but Toyota doesn't own Subaru, they don't have the controlling staketo own it.
Audi is a definite no no. I don't care about the price comparison. Especially the locally used Audi DO NOT TOUCH. Firstly, Audi are the absolutely worst car makers as far as German cars are concerned. They have issues galore. Timing chain issues in most if not all Audi models is a GUARANTEE. Take that car to a mech and THE WHOLE ENGINE HAS TO COME OFF. Parts and labour bill is an easy 300K. Secondly, any knowledge filled mech will tell you how difficult these cars are to repair. Of course the calibre of mechs in Kenya will never shy away from a job. They will chocha you how easy it is to repair. They will fumble and since most owners are naive, you think your car is good to go. Shock! 2 weeks later you are back to the same garage. Guaranteed. I actually don't care whether the said mech has 40 years experience working for the local dealer. They're all the same. They just wanna secure the bag AND WILL NOT TELL YOU THE TRUTH.
You are out of touch with car culture in Kenya. Ati volvo na Mercedes 😂😂😂... By the way, premio nyoka is called so because of the Singapore version that had a 3s ,2000 cc engine which would zig zag on the road overtaking all other cars . Toyota cars have value and reliability. Unmatched.
Man this is some good content, I've been debating with my folks for so long on buying a premio for 1.3m, afaa wanunue SUV ya kupita mawe za ocha. Subscribed!
You got it right ......''hii gari ni mzuri'' that is a slang that has been used for so long by car sellers and even some users but cant tell you much about being mzuri. DONT back down on giving us the facts ...if we get to choose at least we know the good and bad of that choice.
I was nodding to your recommendations until you mentioned the Golf Variant...Anyway, it has a beautiful 1.4 TSI engine for folks who love misfires and Christmas tree lights on their dashboard.
Seems there is a lot of misinformation about the golf and VW in general, I own a 1.4 TSI (0 lights on dashboard btw) and I dare you Eric to get a VW for 2 weeks then give us a review, because I think you can correct the misinformation in the society.
There are several versions of the 1.4l TSI. The EA111 1.4L that is both turbocharged and supercharged is the one with issues and was dropped in 2012 in favour of the EA211 1.4 TSI turbocharged only. Both the 1.4 TSI EA111 and EA211 Turbocharged only found in the MK6 and MK7 respectively are very reliable
Great content and good input for new car users but as a car user you can't say a car is overrated by using price only. Price is more a factor of forces of demand and supply..there is reliability, there is car use and the list goes on
Lol, it's all about "status" in Kenya. I'd drive a Vitz to that biz meeting any day. It's NOT what you drive, it's what you bring to the meeting and you aren't there to sell cars..
Nimecatch feelings hapo kwa Arsenal 😔 (sawa tu) It is videos like this that are helpful to break conventional beliefs...and help us focus on overall cost/benefit of especially "unknown" models.... Thank you for the information.
Brilliant review as always and quite commendable how you throw in those alternative preferences. Could you kindly do a review on Audis, specifically Audi A3 and A4. Thank you.
Comparing toyota premio to vovlo v40 is like comparing iphone to a tecno.. Premio is Toyota's flagship model with both class and reliability... It has both durability and fuel efficiency.. Nonetheless it offers a sense of class.. You ever wonder why a 2 gb iphone is ten times expensive to that of an 8gb infinix or oppo....its that sense of class and reliability.... A car is not always about the torque or speed.....mostly for premio people it's about reliability... And you a missing the idea that it is a toyota a top brand in the car industry offering efficiency and at the same time balancing class
I believe you didn't get our illustration well, on premio and V40 we came down to the price point, why you would buy the other and overlook the other where the V40 offers more just because of a mindset that Toyota's are reliable who said volvos are not? The only thing the Toyota has over the Volvo is what we call first in the market advantage where it dominates in common availability of parts (not saying Volvo parts are not available) and second easy to work on compared to European over engineering but if you can get over this two which we can confirm currently there is a significant uptake in European cars mechanics and availability of parts then your beloved premio has nothing on the Volvo V40 at the same price point
When you drive on kenyan roads the ultimate yardstick is reliability, basically it's unrealistic to compare Toyota with German cars regardless of their year of manufacture
I have owned several cars in the past including BMW , Toyota , Nissan , Rover , Volvo. Toyota is a true value for money. It is efficient on fuel , very affordable to maintain. Easy to find qualified car mechanics within your local area , even small towns. Extremely reliable. Spare part very easy to get. These are some of the important factors one must consider when buying a car.
😅😅very Biased view that's a toyota mentality , I doubt you've owned a car, you buy a car depending with the money you have and needs, people don't compromise comfort because you want all mechanics including quacks to be able to fix your car,,
@@edwinkarani5593 one becomes dependent on spares parts that don't last long...and f om the same car manufacturer..meaning you get stuck on the manufacturer...keeps ripping you off by "proposing cheap and available" spares parts.. Merc W202 M111 is a better deal
All Kenyans think of is resale value, why buy a fielder and get ulcers because it's such a hot cake for car an part thieves , I know a guy who has 3 trackers hidden in his vehicle ! About the volvo and merc wouldn't that screw you when it comes to parts (just asking)
As important as other things go, car spares play a major role in car choice for buyers. Tbh cars like the pre-2006 fielders have way cheaper spares than the post-2006 models and that's enough reason for buyers to go for the such kama hiyo ya mataa ya boot... It has the fielder reliability, durability, status and passenger & boot capacity, yet with cheaper maintenance upsets. Spares are also quite cheap for Toyotas compared to other cars in the same class and year band. One thing with car maintenance is that sometimes you have to cough out cash for spares you didn't anticipate to purchase at that time - so the cheaper they are, the fairer it is to the owner.
I enjoyed this video. Toyotas are VERY overrated in Kenya. Even my own late father & his ilk loved them. It's the resale value notion ati "Ukiwa na shida mahali unaweza uza na bei mzuri"... in those days people bought cars & sold them for more than they bought them believe it or not. I personally think that mentality has been passed on to us. Lakini me ni Benz damu!
Is there any Mercedes on the list of the top ten most reliable vehicles in the world in 2020 or 2021?Just to let you know the lists are dominated by Toyotas
I'm not a Benz owner mpaka double cab ifike but parking a toyo in a public parking is when you'll understand that peace of mind is better than heart aches.
Toyota are the most durable cars we have.. Do your research.. How many models of KAA, KAB, are still running strong on our roads? All manufacturers had same opportunity to market there cars in Kenya. Mtazunguka kwa German tech, etc.. one day mtarudi kwa Toyotas tu.. Toyota does not change there tech so often, they are made to last many many many years..

Since you have partly used price as a factor, you should also add whether the "overpricing" is due to the taxes KRA impose or its the car dealers' margins that are high. For instance, how much does it cost for say a 2015 auris if I import Vs purchasing from a dealer. It could just be that the taxman is imposing more on popular models.
Kenn and Clancy, I would agree with you to some extent, but what I think is that we tend to look down upon us (blacks) even on issues that aren't so sophisticated and mostly would require interest. Am a good analyst for example on matters cars, but all is out of having owned a car and the enthusiasm in having to try find out which better car to own next. In becoming a good analyst, you watch and read all that you can pertaining to particular car makes of your interest and match all that with a taste of the car (where possible)... You then just become an expert.
Thanks for the effort, wengine hapo kwa comments naona wanaumwa ju ya opinions zako. Now we need a list of overrated phones & you better not mention my samsung s10 🤣
Please help in educating Kenyans on matters cars. Hii obsession ya Toyota ni deadly. My fren, unaambia mkenya awache fielder achukue teana? Wewe hujui wewe🤣🤣🤣 If you realise, the main rip offs are actually Toyotas. People will tell you about reliability, resale value, cheap spare parts, consumption......bla bla bla.... I can drive all other cars but I will not be caught dead in these funny Toyota.....sio maringo, ni fact tu..... 😜😜
Your "hatred" and stereotyping of Nissan Serena is overboard!! He he he he... Whereas this is true in a great extent, please remember there are some Nissan Serenas that are just exceptional. I own one for two and a half years without any mechanical issues!! I have done the craziest of trips with it, now at 250k kms on mileage, having bought it at 115k kms...it's not that obviously baaaad!!!
I'm surprised that folks are angry with the list. There seems to be this false idea that if something has high demand then its good and therefore not overrated. A lot of car purchases in Kenya are based on the "ata mimi" syndrome, where we buy simply because our workmate, our neighbor or cousin has the same car and said its good (remember nobody says or accepts he has a useless car). Folks, overrated things can also have high demand.
I agree with the Mazda CX5 as overrated! . In fact when I saw the CX8 some months back I realised why the CX5 had always looked like ''work in progress''!
Toyota is the NUMBER ONE selling car in the world for a reason. All the major concepts regarding car quality manufacture are based on the Toyota way and this include Total Quality Management (TQM), Customer first, Kaizen were all began by Toyota.
Overrated cars are like overrated matatu fare, Unajua hio fare ni double but huna choice kuabiri gari. Likewise, its either you buy at the set price or you end up repairing your your cheap unreliable vehicle like paying dowry. Nonetheless, Jifunze kutembea kutafuta, don't sit and wait Bei ishuke. Kuna places watu wanauza at affordable prices, Trust me.
I am very disappointed by your comments about the business meeting with one having a vitz and merc. I think that opinion is reserved to a poverty sticken African...
Toyota is a car for people who don't like trouble after purchase, and that's a good thing ,but most toyota cars especially cars like premio don't offer value for money for car enthusiasts, to a person who likes driving ,its a no , I like your comparison between a vitz and a benz at the same price tag, I will buy the benz all day long
Only in Africa where value for people is equated to the type of car you drive. I disagree to this ! I wouldn't mind driving vitz to a business meeting or use Ubar. What matters is your product and service
Sawa Wokabi ...in short in Kenya ...its the brand ..Toyota that is overrated!! yes a Toyota is reliable but why do they sell them so highly !!! just because you can sell the easily ??
Auris is good value for money. Only issue is clearance. So si gari ya mizigo na watu. But on normal road and speed, space, fuel efficiency etc yes it is value for money. And resale for those hard times or just resale value. The other options are good for status but zero resale plus maintenance issues not forgetting nissan juke bad engine issues. If you have esteem issues and need status boost, maybe go for the rest. I don't.
What do u mean by 'overrated'? Value for money means that you compare a better car at a cost close to what u talk abt then use the specifications for those cars... I feel confused by talking of overrated... but your content is quite ok
