Arriving from Asia during the 18th century, Crabapples have become a staple in U.S. landscapes and are used as dependable street trees and small ornamental options. Many in colder climates will turn to Crabapples as an alternative to flowering cherry trees since they consistently weather the cold well.
With around 30 different species and another couple hundred hybrid varieties, it can be difficult to pick just one so we’ve highlighted a few crowd favorites. Enjoy!
#5 Royal Raindrops® Crabapple
Royal Raindrops® bloom deep pink each spring along upward spreading branches-giving the tree a peppy, whimsical feel. Not to be outdone by the flashy flower display, the leaves flush out a reddish-purple color and stay dark green with a purple overcast all summer long. And don’t forget about the little purple berries that speckle the tree all winter and feed the returning migratory birds. #5 Royal Raindrops Crabapple - Growing zones 4-8, upright spreading branches, and dark foliage.

#4 Sargent Crabapple
Sargent is the perfect ornamental tree for small urban yards. Getting only about 8-10 feet tall and 8-12 feet wide. It buds dark pink and then blooms white, attracting all kinds of pollinators to your little slice of heaven. The birds will thank you too for the bright red berries that they can snack on all winter. #4 Sargent Crabapple - Growing zones 4-8, compact ornamental tree, and bright berries for winter interest.

#3 Purple Prince Crabapple
In my opinion, Purple Prince gets its royal status from the absolutely massive flower display it puts on each spring, along with the purple foliage following soon after. This tree is well known for its improved disease resistance and it makes a great street tree, standing at 16-18 feet tall and 15-18 feet wide. #3 Purple Prince Crabapple - Growing zones 4-8, disease-resistant, with ruby red berries in the fall and winter.

#2 Spring Snow Crabapple
Spring Snow gives you all the aesthetic appeal of a crabapple, without any of the fruits. This no-mess option features fragrant white blooms and a classic upright oval form. You can count on it getting to be 15-25 feet tall and 15-20 feet wide at maturity. #2 Spring Snow Crabapple - Growing zones 4-8, fragrant white blooms, and fruitless.

#1 Prairifire Crabapple
Prairifire is a consistent customer favorite that was hybridized to feature all the best traits of crabapples. It blooms bright pink in the spring, sports lush dark green leaves with that purplish overcast all summer and bears dark purplish-red fruit in the fall that the birds will love to munch on all winter. It’s hardy, has excellent disease resistance, and tolerates clay soil which makes it the perfect addition to urban gardens. #1 Prairifire Crabapple - Growing zones 4-8, a pollinator magnet, and perfect for urban landscapes.

I used to climb the last one I think at my old apartment complex 😅 I love crabapple trees though cause they look kinda like cherry blossom trees and they were nice to sit and read under when the petals started falling off

What should I spray my Spring Snow Crabapples with in the spring to prevent disease? We planted 3 of them last April and by early to mid summer they lost all of their leaves. I sprayed weekly with Daconil but they still lost all of the foliage.

Are the prairie fire crab apple trees edible?
@Naturehills
@Naturehills 2 года назад
Hey there Onaip, the fruit on Prairie Fire is pretty small and there isn't really enough flesh to make them palatable. There are some crabapple varieties that are grown for fruit production though like Dolgo, Whitney, and Chestnut. I hope that helps! -Whit

Would all be good to cross pollinate apple trees?
@Naturehills
@Naturehills Год назад
Hi there! This is a good question and I'm glad you asked. These aren't great varieties for polinating apple trees but there are others that are. Bees tend to stick with the same colors, so white flowering varieties are better pollinators for the white flowering apple trees. Whitney, Dolgo, Snowdrift, Manchurian, or Donald Wyman are all fantastic pollinators for apple trees. I hope this helps! -Whit

They do a bit, don't they! Crabapple Trees are sometimes used as substitutions for flowering cherry trees in colder regions because of their comparable blooms:) -Whit

I have (what I think) is a prairie fire in my front yard. This spring I grafted a couple different regular apple branches to it. Hopefully the grafts take and I can make this great little tree even better 🙂
