My favorite indigenous American tribe: the rockabillys. They originally traded archtop electrics of their own design with the settlers at Plymouth rock, and their boppin' beats and cool pentatonic licks kept the settlers alive during the first harsh winter.

Randy, I’ve been playing rockabilly and country for over a decade in North America. I’ve always enjoyed your playing and teaching and learned from you. In fact some of the best teachers of the genres I like have been Europeans. It’s irrelevant what part of the world the teacher is from, it’s the appreciation of the music which you clearly have. Others can make all the daft comments they want, Maybe they are jealous because you have got right in your lessons what many British & American bands have been getting wrong for decades wrong notes ,wrong sound, wrong tempo & those making rediculous comments cannot do any better themselves so resort to 'nit picking' in frustration. There is one thing that all of the RU-vid trolls/critics have in common: they see fault but cannot do the thing they are critcising. I have never seen any of them write: "Please follow this link to see me demonstrating the correct way". Ayone who has taken the time to learn practise enough to go on stage and play would not be an internet troll.
Hi Ian, thank you for your comment. I think you're right. Most people who learn an instrument, a skill or a sport realize how much dedication and effort it takes to master it. It makes you appreciate more what others achieved no matter what level they are at.
The 'Mick Weaver' post gets my vote for #1. Great rockabilly music (or classical, R&B, country, whatever) can come from anywhere. Any notion of 'pedigree' is just ignorance. Yes, Carl Perkins is from Tennessee, but Eddie Cochran is from Minnesota, Brian Setzer is from Long Island, and Randy Richter is from Germany!

I love your channel, your passion, your skills, your dry humour, and all those really great interviews!! Keep this music alive! You know more about this music than most! In fact, there's pockets of people all around the world keeping many great American traditions alive. Germany also has it's fair share of Jazz players, as does the Netherlands, and France, Japan, or wherever. Those fans, and scholars keep genres and subgenres alive. So yeah, that last guy has my vote for most misguided comment. Oh, and your Rockabilly on the BC Rich Warlock is literally one of my favourite videos on the net. I've been trying to find one ever since, just to up my Rockabilly skills... ;) I know it won't sound just right unless it's the exact right headstock...

Hi Randy.. I don't care about any comments that dumb people make and nor should you. I joined a rockabilly band (1 singer, 1 upright bass player, 1 drummer and myself on a newly bought Gretsch 5410T Tri-Five) 8 weeks ago and we played our 1st gig together in front of 200 people (mostly dancers) 2 nights ago on NYE in Brisbane, Queensland and it went very well. I never played rockabilly before this band and I can thank You and Damien Bacci for showing me some licks that I was having trouble figuring out myself. I found your lessons easy to follow and learn from. I particularly remember just before playing Rock'n' Roll Ruby going through your lesson in my head and I nailed the solo thanks to you. So, again, Thankyou. By the way, I like Carl Perkins version of Blue Suede Shoes the most!

I've enjoyed your channel for many years.. screw the haters, keep smilin' and layin' down the cool sounds.. one thing I would humbly suggest for any future list would be to modulate the minor chord a half step up between the examples to build tension on your way to the final example, or perhaps diminished chords like in "Along Came Jones" by the Coasters .. it's a lot of work to maintain a channel, thanks again ..your honest love of the music shines through.

Sorry for any confusion or lack of clarity.. It's just something we came up with when playing back ground for functions or contests when there would be introductions ..or when playing walk on or walk off music for awards or speeches. example : MC says " and now Contestant # 1 band strums a chord or plays a lick). MC announces contestant # 2 (band strums same chord or plays same lick but 1/2 step higher) etc. There have been situations when we would go up an octave, then start going back down.. hahaha... It's silly but very effective, plus it's something for the band to amuse themselves with. In your case, it would mean strumming the chord your playing (E6 / C#- ??) 1/2 step higher before each example. diminished chords can also be substituted. Just another little trick of the trade to share and try out.

I would say all these comments are ripe for the bin. Yes they are ludicrous, waffling on without much sense. I'm sure there are thousands more viewers, as well as me, who play guitar and value the lessons you've given, breaking down solos, chord shapes, strumming patterns etc. Like your passion for the 50's music too. It never occurred to me that you would receive negative comments from anyone, since I've always been a fan of all of your content. Still, it was entertaining to hear from the haters, who only demonstrate that they have nothing to offer at all. Their remarks reveal much about themselves, and nothing about you. Keep up the excellent work -- I don't think there is anyone else out there who teaches this music as well as you do.
Sad to see that some people have to be negative in such petty ways. As for those critics, I would remind them that this music we admire is on the endangered list lately, and anyone - anywhere - who is an enthusiastic proponent of the style should be applauded. My thanks to Randy for keeping Rockabilly alive with his fine lessons.

Yeah I recall picking up on a remark you made in one lesson which suggested someone had made an ignorant remark about your "German' heritage. And this might hold water - if only Elvis hadn;t spent a considerable time in Germany, if only the Beatles (great champions of Rockabilly) hadn;t learned their craft in Germany, and if only man of the Rock'n'Roll greats including Gene Vincent hadn't enjoyed their work performing for German audiences. And of course if only German immigrants hadn't influenced teh evolution of Rock'n'Roll - your German heritage is an essential part of this history, but ignorance - well unfortunately - ignorance it is an international currency.... I think a lot of these guys are showing off their "expertise" on rockabilly, gained from Google searches and Wikipedia with little understanding of how much of the passion and knowledge of this music resides w/English and German fans. If it weren't for the 70's UK fans like Ted Carrol a ton of the original recordings would have been lost. They drove the research on the sessions and musicians and gave a lot of them a livelihood in their old age by giving them steady work through the years after the music was far from popular "south of the Mason Dixon, where real musicians have generations of experience to draw on". HA! the ONLY place I've ever personally seen a grandfather, father and son together who were passionate rockabilly fans was in London!! Document Records is run by Austrian collectors - they were able to make available to the public the entire recorded catalog of pre WWII blues music. Library of Congress uses their recordings for the majority of their reference material on it - which they generously gave a copy of the whole catalog of thousands of CD's to. Anyone who's been a fan of this music for years knows instantly what a contribution Europeans have made to Rockabilly music. I think the American rockabilly scene (in general) is much more hung up on clothes and gives much less shit about the music itself compared the Europeans. Maybe if you made a Wikipedia page on European contributions to Rockabilly some of these people would believe it. Once again a European is giving me access to enjoying music that has been one of the greatest loves of my life. Sorry for the long rant
You're right. We really have to thank those people who kept the flame alive during the 60s and 70s when it was not cool at all to listen to rockabilly. They preserved a real treasure for us

You can play any guitar style on most types of guitars. They have to put videos out of all that knowledge, otherwise it will die. I don’t get the snobby scene parts to music genres. You have to take drugs to play prog rock, no you have to take drugs to want to 😂😂
I have absolutely no interest in drugs or prog rock, yuck to both, whoever thought it was a good idea to combine rock n' roll with classical music was definitely on drugs! Didn't they ever hear Chuck Berry or The Beatles play Roll Over Beethoven!?

Its good to see that your not taking the racist idiots seriously Randy Jokes about the war are so childish and pathetic and I think the Rockabilly scene in Germany is much stronger than the one in Britain at the moment where a lot of people are just jumping on the "retro" bandwagon and are not getting it right with the music or the clothes and they think having a million tattoos makes you a Rockabilly whereas the Germans seem to be getting it right by doing Rockabilly in the right way
Hi Paul, Thank you for your comment. I agree with you about the war jokes. It's hard for me to take them seriously. Regarding the scenes, we have plenty of people here too in Germany who are on the retro banwagon so to speak. It doesn't bother me too much, because I have a bunch of guys who share my musical views and taste. Ultimately, I think you can't chose what you like or dislike. So I'm really thankful that I'm not the only one with a passion for 1950s music, movies, design and so on

Everybody agrees that I am a better guitar player than Tommy Emanuel. There, now you have a ridiculous comment to start your next ten years. I have only used one of your lessons but I liked it very much.
What is really interesting is that these criticisms come from people who probably don't have a RU-vid channel themselves, I bet you. The first comment is particularly stupid-.Rockabilly blends the sound of Western musical styles such as country with that of rhythm and blues, an amalgam of western swing, boogie-woogie, jump blues, and electric blues.In other words the form is heavily influenced by Black culture. Negermusik ("Negro Music") was a derogatory term used by the Nazis during the Third Reich to signify musical styles and performances by blacks They viewed these musical styles as inferior works belonging to an "inferior" race and therefore prohibited by the Nazis. Rock on Randy you do a great job-look forward to learning about 'Listen to me'!!!
The only comment I have done, i think , is about the rockabilly sound guitar video... When the least looking rockabilly guitar sounded most "rockabilly". So I advise using that on any recording session :). For me it is all about sound and not looks, in the end. Here in sweden we do joke about WWII, mostly for it is "forbidden" or not "political correct" here to talk about it, like what has Hitlers favourite tune? (it was a beatles song... U will figure it out...)
