Just thought I'd add to this info for anyone looking at a 3rd gen TL. 1. Transmission: Yes, the automatic trans in the 04-06 model is significantly weaker than the 07-08. However, if the trans was taken care of with regular fluid changes, trans filter changes, and pressure switch changes, you should have no issues on a 04-06. The problem is finding a car where the previous owners actually cared enough to do this maintenance. (My 06 is at 230k miles on the original auto trans, working perfect). 2. Bushings: Yes, also a weak point. Usually torn on these cars, but not usually to the point of making the driving experience horrible. 3. Shocks: Not really applicable. The shocks and struts they used in this car are actually better quality than most of the other stuff Honda was putting out at the time. Kind of subjective given the specific car's history and how rough of terrain it's been over. 4. EGR & IAC: Not really sure where they got this info. There are hundreds of active users on the Acurazine forums, who have this exact car, and EGR & IAC are not components that are abnormally failing. These are not items you should typically have to worry about in this car. There ARE a couple other major items that were not mentioned here. Biggest one affecting a vast majority of owners being the HandsFree Link (HFL) module causing a drain on your battery, leaving users with a dead car randomly. This is a very simple disconnect to prevent. Additionally, the infamous dash cracking is a design/manufacture flaw that will cause virtually all of the dashboards out there to crack at some point. There are covers to remedy this, because entire new dashboards are expensive and rare. There's other things that are less prevalent like axle failure/vibration and trim peeling, but overall, these cars are extremely solid if given simple maintenance. The hardest part now is finding a 15+ year old car that has been actually taken car of.
I have a 06 TL automatic and my drive light has been blinking for over a year now. No issues with changing gears but when i come to a quick stop (like a rushed stop sign) and accelerate, it gives a small jerk to it. I took it to the dealer for a full inspection and let them know beforehand that the pressure switch was my main concern and they told me my 3rd pressure switch needs to be replaced for around 300$. I see them on ebay for around 10$ so idk if I should buy the 10$ switch myself and reset the transmission or just pay the 300$
No man, the early model transmission issue is a design problem, not something fluid change can help, in fact I did a 3 qt AT fluid change every other oil change, my transmission still crap out around 140K. During that time I have changed lots of thing under the hood too, except the engine lol. Let me count, transmission, power steering pump, alternator (may be partially due to bluetooth module drain), starter, passenger side engine mount bracket bolt teeth stripped. The engine is good, but this car is not that reliable, consumer report supports that too... And then there's lots of interior problem, like others had mentioned, dash cracking, bluetooth module battery drain, dash digital display light out (circuitboard issue), audio system statics when not warmed up(capacitor leaking), other small thing. I still like the car though
I have an 07 TL and I would agree the most common problem I've read about (happened to me as well) was the hands free link draining the battery, but a simple disconnect solves the problem. I've also replaced the transmission safety switch and a couple gaskets on the inlet/outlet power steering lines and that is the extent of work besides oil/transmission fluid changes. It now has 98k miles and runs like a top---very reliable but I do proper maintenance ( flushes, coolant changes etc)
I definitely agree, both of these cosmetic problems should have been listed in the video....not to mention the clear coat paint failure! Geez, Honda really stuck it to the 2004-2008 TL owners with the cosmetic failures.
@@thefutureisnowoldman7653 This is a parallel comment, as it CAN apply to ALL cars in which it has a had a history of SOMEONE treating the dash to ArmorAll. That stuff has silicon in it... looks 'nice a shiny' for a spell, but bonds with the surface... and INITIALIZES CRACKS. So... be aware... don't ever use that stuff on any dash or foam/plastico that will be seeing sunlight.
I've had an 04 for almost 2 years now and love it! Has over 400,000km now. To anyone buying one of these, I recommend going with an 07-08 because they did major transmission upgrades. Also replace the fluid pressure switches and do a full 3x3 fluid change.
Good to hear, I just bought an 05 and also love it, with 175,000kms. Ya I would love an ‘08 with the upgrades, maybe in a few years although I have no problem driving this one as long as she will go
I just wish they would have made way more type-s of those years they are the best looking TL of all time and also the stick ones where way better then the auto to
I’ve worked on these cars since 2004. I currently own an 08 type s 6 speed manual and I’ve never had to replace an EGR on this generation TL, never heard of them commonly going out and definitely never heard of the IAC as a common failure either. Not saying that they don’t go out, I’ve just never encountered one. The purge valve yes, upper and lower ball joints, yes.... engine mounts, power steering pumps, starters, oil leaking from the valve covers and oil pump housing, all very common.
I love the car I am thinking of changing the transmission and front shocks to prolong the life of the car currently at 184460 I believe this car is very reliable even with these 5 issues it’s worth fixing when you start noticing the problem
My first Acura was a 2005 TL 5spd auto nothing bad to say was a very pleasant experience, bought it for $1000 Unfortunately someone I knew stole my car and when I recieved it back I just didn't want it and sold it.. kinda ruined my experience with the car couldn't live with the fact that it was stolen. My second car was a 2005 Acura tsx 6spd manual.. bought it for $500 sold it for $2000 the next day.. unfortunately didn't get to learn manual in that exact car. My third car was a 2003 CL Type S 5spd Auto bought it for $800 my first ever type s and coupe, this was the bulletproof car that I've owned and ran with even all the lights on dash transmission slipping, bought it at 200,000km drove it till 300,000km without any problems lmaooooo sold it for $1000 my current car is a 2004 Acura TL 6spd manual.. omg I love this car, the fact that the manual has brembos and the fact that I learnt to drive manual in it.. kinda brought back the memories from my 05 TL 5spd auto but much better experience. I'm glad I opted for only 2004-2005 because those years had 270hp whilst the 2006-2008 had 256hp and trust me it is a noticeable difference. Wish me luck on my next car 2008 TL type S 6spd!!
The horsepower didn't change in that generation of TL's. The way that it was being measured was the change. Obviously the the '07-'08 Type S have more, because they are a 3.5L instead of a 3.2
If u can find a manual trans, u wont need to worry about any major mechanical issues. Ive heard and experienced nothing but good on the engine and standard manual trans. I have 190k miles on my 06 tl. Plus the manual received break and suspension upgrades including a LSD, which the automatic did not. I think lower ball joints are also a common problem: they can break and this does have a timing belt that needs to be replaced. It Was about a 700 dollar job at my shop.
I have a 2004 Acura TL with only 35K miles so the fact that the miles driven are so low probably accounts for why I haven't experienced any of these problems. I bought the car new 17 years ago and like the V-6 engine so much compared to the tinny sounding 4 cylinder sedans that dominate today's modern passenger sedans.
old rubber parts (3x engine, 3x tranny mounts) deteriorate by year not mileage alone. Same thing with grease lubricant that evaporates (HVAC AirMix Door sensor faults)... I have 04TL@150kMi: I like it far better than my newer German money pit 👍
If you ever want to sell her I’d be more than happy to buy it from you!! I’m as serious as can be. This is my email in case you’re interested, priscillaaguirre87@gmail.com
Hey 1Aauto I just wanted to say thanks for all the vids they really do help on choosing a vehicle 👍 . Can you guys make a video of a 2003 Nissan Maxima and it’s top problems PLEASE!!! Thank you José.Tenezaca
06 with 200k miles, disconnect the Bluetooth module, snapped driver side axle, motor mounts replaced, front sway bar links changed, but none of the issues included here. My suspension is still all original. Edit: forgot to mention the intermediate shaft bearing that seems to be a common problem on TLs and many other Honda and Acura models.
the transmission issue is related to the soft shift feature creating heat. adding a transmission cooler can solve the problem. and most defiantly fluid change is going extend the life of any automatic tranmsission.
I have a 2006 TL that I bought new with 160K and had to replace my transmission. Bought a JDM locally and had it installed for under 2K. Motor mounts. Valve cover gasket. Struts. Alternator.
04-06 have a weak transmission IF YOU DINT TAKE CARE OF IT. The 07-08’ are more reliable. Ironically the smaller brother TSX is bulletproof all years, those go up to 300k miles +
I’ve heard the 06 07 v6 accord transmission is a common replacement for the 04-06 tl. Is this true? My transmission just went on my 2005 tl with 130,000.
I have a 2005 TL 3.2l with 74k , I have all these problems except for 1 he mentioned because previous owner neglected the car 🤦♂️, love the car, just trying to find out how to fix hard shifting at 2/ to 3 rpm on and off
well today on the highway the VSA light kicked in along with the triangle ! light.. whats different about my situation is that its as if the traction control was on and wouldnt let me accelerate past 3k rpms .. i had to very slowly get back up to highway speed just to make it to an exit. Turned the car off and let it sit which fixed the problem, reason for the post is now this is the 2nd time this happened this week
You missed the parasitic drain on the battery, as well as the bad brush in the ignition system. However, if I could have this car back, I would. On my 2016 Acura TLX, it's facing a major recall for a bad crankshaft and bearings. It's like a nightmare. It just keeps getting worse. Maybe time to go to Lexus.
I have the same color and already replaced transmission love these cars you have to do more maintenance to the trans than the dealership wants you too or recommend.
I got a 2006 model and recently have been having trouble with the car losing power changed transmission fluid flushed coolant added additive to engine and have been running additive’s aswell to clean engine and tips?
3rd generation acura owners, can the drivers door window control switch be removed by just popping it up from it's position or do you have to take the entire door panel off to access it?
When someone tries to sell me 04-08 100k mileage Acura TL and tell me engine runs strong and no mechanical issues. It is automatically a red flag. Why? because at 100k if the owner didn't change the water pump, timing belt, idle tensioner bearings, hydraulic tensioner, drive belt, spark plugs, coil packs, plenum gaskets, lower intake gaskets, valve cover and tube seals and or didn't do a valve adjustment I would have to barter with the person on price. People often think that parts can run past their intended mileage and that is not true. If you didn't do any of the above and you are selling me your car with the intention I am getting a great deal I would have to tell you that you are incorrect on the asking price. Proper maintenance can maintain the value of the selling price and poor maintenance calls for bartering.
I'd like to add, deteriorated air boot which leaks and allows dust and debri in. Seem it twice for that year engine. Also, 2005 dash looks worse than a cracked and dried up Salton Sea!
Hey I recently ordered parts for my town car from.you guys and the box was pretty beat up..loose and parts were hanging out. I emailed customer support and haven't received an email back. I still haven't opened the box. I'm waiting to hear back from you. I bought Tie Rods I'm not sure how much they weigh but the box seemed pretty light.
I have owned 3 of these and one with nearly 200k miles and no transmission problems whatsoever in any of them and I find it laughable they added it here. I disagree with all of these except for all the bushings problems. I will also say this generation also has problems with rear wheel well body rot - I personally think it's a design flaw. I will also say that 2 of mine had APP units go bad at just about the 125k mark. 2 of mine also had a small leak in the oil right above the pan it is a pain to get to and unless it's really pissing on you just pay attention to the level. The other big thing I see on the boards is power steering pump but I didn't experience that in any of my vehicles.
I have an 06 and i'm getting rid of it. It literally has ALL of these problems, but I aint made cause it taught me a lot about cars and that I should research a car first before buying another
Any car that is from 2006 is going to need something in the suspension fixed, ball joints and bushings don't last the life of the car. The only mistake you made was not knowing Honda's from 1998-2006 have the worst automatic transmissions of Honda's history
@@Carlos-yz5kz yeah i agree i should have done more research especially since i got it second hand off of a female who knew nothing about cars. I was young and excited about my first car. I learned a lot from it tho so i'm not mad
+Crazymc3 We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Are the AWD models transverse mounted motors, or longitudinal? I’ve always thought these would make awesome drift cars when we eventually run out of S series Nissans.
I have a 2008 I bought in 2012 with 74,000 miles it has 243000 now on the day I replaced it with all new interior driving home engine light came on I check it with my diagnostic tool and got a po767 code. unfortunately I never changed the fluid so solenoid D Is stuck open so I'll try to clean it and see what happens
It amazed me how they go generation to generation with different problems not only this. Cars but the hondaa accord up to the 9 generetaion with different problems. Either they are stupid not efficient . Or doit in purpose so you keep bringing them to the dealer .
2006 in good condition with 234k miles bought for 3000 bucks. Bad Transmission, replacement 4500 bucks. Hell no! Front bushings, replacement 2300 bucks. No way I'm already broke. All four shocks/struts, replacement 1800 bucks. Nope! And he said not "bad" . How do I know this, I just recently junked my 2006 because of these not so "bad" issues. Drove it for 3 months before all the issues happen.
That's why you learn and find someone that can help you genuinely not to take your money at overpriced mechanics. These cars are STILL VERY RELIABLE, this IS NOTHING compared to other cars. I know people with 350k miles on the car, no tranny issues at all only fluid once in a while.
Woo 5 problems and i have 5 years whit my acura and i dont have eny of the the 5 problems mines are diferens in the same car ' like de ligth vsa and the speed sensor
Hi, I have a 2012 TSX Special edition with 108 miles on it and when I drive slow and gear changes I can feel a little vibration on the gas pedal. Not always but sometimes. Do you have any idea what it might be?
Sounds like a motor mount, probably the rear.. Either the vacuum hose on the bottom of the mount broke or the mount collapsed or broke. I’d try flushing the transmission fluid first though. Lack of maintenance can cause that as well.
Typically the trans go bad because ppl avoid maintenance and listen to garbage mechanics. D4 is a sensor 🤦🤦 . If not changed it'll cause damage in the trans . They are all serviceable and no fluid is lifetime. A solenoid cel code and other sensor issues mechanic shops say trans is going bad . All Honda automatic transmission (not cvt) are manual transmissions with a different case with pressure switches/solenoid . And those are facts not opinions. Idle air control valve is typically an adjustment inside the valve... There is a wax plunger that can be adjusted . Alot of the time transmission failure is do to no maintenance wrong maintenance and bad mechanics searching for a pay day or a free car . I've delt with hundreds of these cases . The biggest issue with tls are the dash cracking from sun or the wrong cleaning products. Don't let them dry up and they don't crack ..... And never use armour all junk products
it could be your rack & pinion, could be your axles and or lower control arms or upper control arms and or your wheel bearings and lastly lower ball joints...you need to inspect all of those components to see what is causing those vibrations
He said Transmission and that is the moment.... I knew.... I didn't want to get F'd up...I am looking at a car now and it has 300K miles on it and its 600 dollars.... I know that transmission is gone if its a top 5... also the engine will need to be rebuilt or a remanufactured one placed in.... Great cars after spending 10 - 15K dollars on all the work needed for a 300K mile version... LOL.
2 Corinthians 11:11-12-13-14-15 Wherefore? because I love you not? God knoweth. But what I do, that I will do, that I may cut off occasion from them which desire occasion; that wherein they glory, they may be found even as we. For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.
