Fourth point is pretty valid. PMP is based on the waterfall project life cycle whereas most IT projects are moving towards Agile project life cycle ...and an CSM or PMI-ACP certification might be more useful.
@@pmclounge Mixing the two project life cycles (water fall and agile) into the same certification viz. PMP does not add any value if you are going to work in a single type of project life cycle. Example: You are in the construction industry and your pursue PMP then the Agile knowledge will not be useful there. If you are involved with creating new products probably the waterfall knowledge may not be useful. If you work in a Hybrid environment probably then only the new PMP makes some sense. Let me know what you think.
You just said if you work in hybrid only then the new PMP makes sense but how can you understand hybrid if you don't know either agile or waterfall? In order to know hybrid you must know both agile and waterfall. That being said, this means PMP is now preparing you for agile, waterfall and hybrid
I am a masters level social worker looking to make a transition into tech. Everything you just mentioned is the exact process I have to go through for my clinical social work license. The only difference is that the average pm makes 60k more that the average social worker. I'll take my chances with the pmp certification thanks. Whish me luck!
Congrats on taking the leap. This video is only an alternate viewpoint, we have 600+ videos on this channel explaining every single concept of PMP that has benefitted thousands of aspirants clear their exam. Do consider subscribing 👍😊
What you forgot to mention was the PMP certification is an investment in yourself with a 25% rate of return. It also disguises you from your fellow co workers, who you are competing against for promotions in the company or job applicants. A designation such as a PMP is a way to show you are certified and should be studying continuosly in your field of expertise to become better everyday... A minimum of 35 hours of education every 3 years is nothing
Filling out the application was more time consuming than actually preparing for the exam. It took me months to finalize it because I had in mind the pmp audit. So i only added experience that I can easily verify just in case. However, I was able to save money and time on the PDUs through taking LinkedIn learning courses. LinkedIn gives you one month of free trial. I only studied for one month because I didn’t have enough time on my hands. During this month I took 2 weeks off work, one at the beginning of my study and the last before the exam. So I was studying full time for 2 weeks. Also, I didn’t buy any books. I just used the pmbok pdf version and printed ppt slides found on LinkedIn from a Pmp trainer. So it only costs me a total of 544$ (membership+ exam fees) which’s still damn expensive.
Expensive, time consuming, hard .. this applies to all certificates .. like MBA for example. A lot of employees would like to earn money, in order to do that, they need to raise the complexity of their jobs, PMP is a way to raise the complexity and education of a person. Also PMP opens doors, meaning, some clients require whoever will work with them has to have PMP and preferable MBA, you can't wing such requirement! Also when it comes to promoting a person in a department, 90-99% of the time one with the best academic education will win, they will not take you over a guys that is ITIL, Six Sigma, PMP or MBA certified because you are smart. Education has its value and it comes with a price, if it was easy .. everyone would've done it. Nice video btw :) Cheers,
For me PMP certification is just a piece of paper that tells the world that you have cleared an exam. And frankly just going through pmbok and Rita and solving mock questions should give a non certifed PM all the knowledge needed to apply the PMP concepts as needed to his/her current project. The rediculous fees that PMI charges for the exam is just their way to fish money out of our pockets....after all it's an American body which presents simple common sense concepts packaged with unnecessarily complicated word play, so that they can charge crazy fees for the exam. I have cleared the exam and what I feel is needed to clear almost 90 % of the exam is just basic common sense. Once you solve enough number of mock questions you get a sense of the approach and mindset that you need to have to easily clear the exam. Even the mathematical concepts aren't difficult AT ALL. All the people that I spoke to were strangly scared of the course content and viewed the exam as an incredible barrier to overcome....which it DEFINITELY is not.
@@engr.a.d2850 Just saw your comment. You may have already taken the exam....but my above comment still holds. There is nothing that PMP teaches you that you cannot acquire from free sources on the net. PMI just charges for the certificate. Incidentally PMI forces you to take their introductory course.....and gives you some made up PDU's(they call it Professional Development Units). Even if you tell them that you are comfortable directly giving the PMP.... without the need to attend their priliminary course....they will not allow you......that is all that you need to know wrt how these buggers nickel and dime people under the guise of providing "knowledg". What is important from a persons career pov is the knowledge that he can apply to his projects.... NOT a freaking certificate. Just get hold of RITA and some mock questions, go through them, read RITA a couple of times(the book does ramble quite a bit but it's way better than the horrendously written PMBOK) Try and get your organization to pay for the exam(convince them of how you getting the certificate can be a big help to the organization to get more/better projects)
The explanations in this video fit the reality very well. The PMI wants to make sure that every PMP maintains its knowledge. It is true that it is a lot of work. Some people may say that if you really want it then you should invest the time and effort. It is also true that there are other method out there. It is also true that you can get the knowledge and not the certification if you become a mebmer of PMI, then you get the PMBOK and then you can even get yourself trained and gain the same knowledge. PMP designations just tells everyone that I HAVE MADE IT!. Do you want to let the world know about it? It is your decision. I would chose to go through all the work to make sure I get the knowledge. I would suggest that the PMI streamlines this process. It is lots and lots of work.
While this video does present an alternative view and state some of the reasons why you can say no to PMP, over here at pmclounge.com, we firmly believe that PMP is the absolute gold standard when it comes to Project Management certifications. Every Project Manager out there should strive to get PMP, below are some of our other videos justifying the same, Do you need PMP Certification - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-heoJjPlM5rQ.html What do PMP certified Project Managers do differently? - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fouM3F0wJOQ.html Top 3 Reasons to get PMP certified - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iQylrWVQmrM.html
People don't keep learning. They just report pdus. It will be better to retest slightly pmp in order to keep the certification, for example an exam of 60 questions every 3 year to keep the certification
I agree with point number 5. The problem I have with certs is that if all you have to do is memorize information for an MCQ test, then it does not demonstrate you have the skills. That is why I love IT certs like Cisco Routing and Switching for the CCNP and CCIE levels because you have to do labs in order to attest your skills. If a certification does not require you to perform skillsets, then it is just memorizing information to pass an MCQ test.
What I took away from my coworkers about PMP certifications is this " If you are a good Project Manager the PMP will not make you a better Project Manager. If you are a bad Project Manager the PMP will not make you a good Project Manager. It is just a certification, a piece of paper to hang on your wall.
True it is just a certificate, but it is based on best practices on project management. In the process of achieving and passing the exam through the learning materials, you learn the necessary processes and knowledge to make your projects more efficient and effective. So I truly feel if you're a bad project manager, you will become a better one for sure (If you practice what you've learned). Do not think of it as just a piece of paper, the certificate itself doesn't matter much, In the end it's journey that counts, not necessarily the destination. Will be writing my exam in a few days btw👍🏾
So True my friend, I agree with the points you just made. Many years ago I did go through rigorous training for PMP and have worked on Multiple projects however never planned on getting a PMP Certification. In my humble opinion --- 1 it was too expensive, 2 it was time consuming and exhausting, 3 its just one of the methods of getting a job and not really a display of your real knowledge working in projects and lastly we have to keep reading newer versions, maintaining credit hours and the whole nine yards. Eventually you will move to a higher position where this probably would cease to have its existence. But i'm glad some one had the courage to make this video and it will help demystify the myth that PMP is the Ultimate certification without which in the IT industry your worth is not a lot.... Thanks for sharing
Mr Srivasta please can you tell us that can we giVe the PMP certification for our future prospect or there is any other course available for better than PMP what is your Opinion
@@up8508 PMP any day is a prized possession but again it's something of a personal choice if you want to be renewing it every 3 years. Also what are your goals. Plan things accordingly. Hope it helps
Hello, if you have worked in a project environment and under different project phases, I don't see a reason why you wouldn't be eligible. All the best and don't forget to subscribe 😊👍
I am a software developer, I passed pmp but found that salaries of project managers are way lower than software developers so it is not really useful to maintain it and keep paying for it
Thanks for sharing. We have done an entire series covering Project Manager salaries in different countries, feel free to check it out here goo.gl/Jdms2u
Though your points are true in terms of cost and time we need to spend, but it is worth to invest.. here is my understanding of it "PMP learning/certification process and exercises you do will help to better understand the situations by that you can apply more superior response that results in more number of winnings" ; PMP syllabus focuses on 360 degree review of activities we undergo as a project manager, so it is huge and does make sense; at the end the certification alone will not help unless one starts applying the principles learned out of it.. refer PMI Talent Triangle that refers to Technical, Leadership and Strategic Business management skills which helps a project manager.
Thanks for your comment. I am a big advocate for the PMP certification and made this video just to give an alternate perspective, feel free to check out this video on what a PMP certified Project Manager can bring to the table ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fouM3F0wJOQ.html
I was lucky to get in a EU sponsor project where they payed for the 35 h course and the application. It took me 1.5 months from the first time I have ever heard of PMP to getting the Certificate. Most of the study I did in the week I took the 35 h course then maybe 1 or 2 days doing tests the days before the exam. But I had much of the knowledge from working and Six sigma certification training.
@@salmanalphatron5813 hello. The basics information/mentality was the same so that helped me understand but PMP use some spacial definition and abbreviation that are in almost all of the questions of the exam. If you just want to take the exam with only the six sigma training I don't think you can pass.
Hi Alex Hope you're having a great time. I am searching for some certifications that could be an added value to my current job role and with the hope of increase in opportunities & pay. But, I now see and hear too many names: PMP, PMI-ACP, Prince2, ITIL, CAPM, lean six sigma & different belts. Some of them I heard it for the first time. Could you suggest which one of them is widely accepted and pays good?? TIA.
@@SSMB-vl4fz Hello. It depends on so many things. I could give you some points but only in my field and in my country. I do interact through the company with different factories in America, China, India and other countries but mainly I can tall you what is the trend in Romanian. Six sigma and Lean is a basic training but it does differ from organization to organization. Usually the big ones creat they're one sistem that integrat the Lean certification or the six sigma/ green belt/ black belt. So this is usually something that you get after you start working at a company and is done in the internal sistem. There are external certification for similar activities but I would not sugest it because it is expensive and depending on the company they will make you redo the internal certification. If you can go at a free or cheap introduction to the tools this is a good thing to have on a CV. An important certificate cation for me was the FMEA. It is used in all automotive industries and it is starting to be asked for in all the other industries by the client auditor. But this is what I see from my point of view. I always worked in factories somewhere between the client and process. But if you work away from the factory or client interaction a certification for a program used in your line of work is more important. The problem is when you start in getting certification that helps with management positions like PMP, networking is more important. I don't like this but in Romanian who you know is more important then what you know. If you want to get jobs like project leader or manager without networking you must have good experience and the certification are like the cherry on top of that.
We have discussed all certifications offered by PMI and who should take them in this video - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ROodO4dII3k.html. All the best 👍
Hello Urvashi, IIM does not run PMP course. PMP certification is offered only by PMI. You will find this page on our website helpful www.pmclounge.com/start-here/
I just finished a PM certification and don’t have a college degree. Would have LOVED to have the luxury to take the PMP in 2-3 years but i am looking to enroll back into college for a B.S. However, in the meantime i want to break into entry-level … possibly a project coordinator. Without a degree would you suggest CAPM, and CSM will land me the position until i can get PMP certified?
Hi Tiera, CAPM is a good entry level project management certification that you can look into. All the best don't forget to subscribe for conceptual videos that can help you prepare for the certification 😊👍
The best Project Managers worked their way up from apprenticeship, to foreman to engineering manager in fabrication or maintenance and then moved into project management with all that experience. Getting a piece of paper from an exam doesn't make you a PM. Trust me, i'm one of highest paid PMs in the UK with 40 years experience and well over a Billion pounds of projects under my belt. Don't be conned by people selling PM schemes, you won't hack the job in the longer term.
Very True and very enlightning video, you rightly said PMP certified need not be good PM's. I would rather say it is waste of time and the questions asked in exam is irrelevant to what is being studied or in the PMBOK. Also there is no guarantee the answers hidden from users are right, practically we face in the field and tick marked by them might be different. Also no guarantee if you scored above PAR but was failed for 'N' reasons. I strongly recommed all PMP aspirants, you are wasting your time and money. Finally, i would want to ask if all PMP certified are successful in executing their projects I would rather suggest PMI to be more transparent in their approach
Yup , that is correct and i almost attend the formal training. I know many who have cleared the PMP exam and even retained the certificate have seen any good worth due to that certificate. BTW the fees is just humungous and the worst is we need to keep retaining it.
I’m studying for my CAPM exam and I wonder if your points are also valid for that. I definitely agree with the PMP unless someone is deadset on obtaining it or it is logical I. Their career journey to have it. Experience trumps over everything. Most certifications are to get your foot in the door at a company. As I’m in freight forwarding, this knowledge doesn’t apply to it’s true nature, but the work itself is the same as handling projects. Just on a smaller more repetitive scale. What are your thoughts for CAPM? How can one figure out if the certification would not be significant or how it can be for themselves? I assume to some it would be beneficial while to others it probably wouldn’t do much if anything for their growth?
CAPM exam is a good choice if you do not have the experience required for PMP. Hi friend, in continuation with this for everything taking my encase, my designation is engineer and am handling projects, but having a year experience. Am I eligible for this after 2 yrs..
Thank you for providing the costly process of PMP and it is true I have friends that spend a lot of time and money to get PMP. It is true you have to continue keeping up educations along with having to renew your PMP every 3 years & 60 PDU.
Hi Deepak, depends on where you want to take your career. Project Management is more of an individual contributor role in most of the organizations today. But even if you are at manager level, having a PMP is the best way to exhibit that you possess project management skills. All the best 😊👍
Hi Kamal, do note that this video is only presenting an alternative view as mentioned in the first pinned comment. If you are eligible for PMP, then you should go for it, it is the absolute gold standard certification in Project Mgmt 😊👍
I'm Graduated in Arts BA (Public administration & English Literature) from Open University Ignou and I have a Working Experience in 2 Years in Call Centre & 1.5 Years of Back office, Can i go for PMP in India
Ok I have a question!! I am in 12th right now so should I do bba after my 12th for project management or not? What should I do right after my highschool graduation for project management!
Hi Pragya, the best option is to get yourself an engineering degree. Note that PMI also provides project mgmt certification for students, check out this video for more ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E_YT-3J-5Lo.html 😊👍
I agree, I said this in many interviews when I got the same question "Why you have not certified", I said certificate may be till the door of interview but not for the job... If capable to ans the question as per the interviewer requirement then you are IN else Out.... But still it's about the judgement on candidates with PMP certification....
+MyMaking while the answer is good enough, have you considered being a PMP would actually eliminate that question itself. Have you considered the number of times you didn't receive the interview call because an HR couldn't find the letters "PMP" on your resume?
Why would successfully completing a tough certification exam not warrant that the PM will be good? I assume that when you say good, you're referring to their technical capabilities, and not to their moral standing.
Thanks PMP lounge for the information. Though, I am new to your channel, yet, could you tell me what's the precise difference between Agile PM vs PMP. I've 10 years of overall experience in IT (mixture of App support & handing Team as TL for 4.5 years). I am in North America and what would you think best fit for me right now.
@chetandayma5602 I didn't, but I chose to go with PMP. It is thorough and gives you a better understanding of overall processes and procedures along with implementation.
Hi Bala, PMP certification requires atleast 3 years of project experience to be eligible for the exam. You can consider PMI certification offered to students. Check this video for more ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E_YT-3J-5Lo.html 👍😊
are those real problems? tell me what we get easily in life without any hardwork or paying more? I spend around 60k for pmp and and now my basic pay per month is almost double of it. m not promoting pmp but it is really useful if you get into it. if you take it like a degree certificate den of course its waste
Not convincing for not to get PMP. Any certifications requires its own cost and time though the extent varies from certification to certification. Accordingly, the relevance varies with the effort needed. In regards to what you tried to mention that getting certified is not a guarantee to be a good project manager might be true. But the worst manager who is certified with PMP is always better in project management than if he is not certified as he gained the required globally accepted best practice knowledge of project management
Going by the name of the jobs mentioned like Supply Chain or Administration, PMP certification is not required but if your job involves Project Management or you want to get into Project Management, you can definitely look for getting yourself the PMP certification. Here's a video that discusses more - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-heoJjPlM5rQ.html
I guess it’s better to do Msc in PM from a reputed University and continue external CPDs with industry specific or expectations (whichever the industry - project logistics, construction or ?)
I would like to go for project management in IT in One of the colleges in canada, pursuing as systems manager after msc computer science in 2018.is it worth it .general project management or project management IT a good choice?
Your last point i.e. PMP does not certify that you will become an excellent Project Manager, is absolutely right. So why PMP? Think again. (Disclaimer - It's not my opinion :))
I am having the project management experience from last 6 yrs and willing to get the certificate of PMP for betetr oportunity. But I am agree this certification will not define you are a good or poor manager. It is your skill to handle and manage the problems associate with the project. But keen to know is that is it mandatory to get PMP to work for a good organisation.
Hi Azhar, PMP is the absolute gold standard when it comes to Project Mgmt certifications. Now if it is mandatory or not depends on your region and the companies you are trying to apply for. It will be best to check out your local area job openings to find out 😊👍
Please note that this video only tries to provide an alternate point of view. Over at pmclounge.com we are all for PMP. But if you are looking for an alternate then real life project management experience is the way to go. If you are looking for a certification then PMP is the gold standard. All the best 👍
good content out here, I had a question how will my job opportunities increase in IT sector with a PMP or CAPM certificate. And is it helpful doing it ?
Reason number 6 is not GUARANTEED to land a JOB as a Proyect Manager specially if never work as PM, and even if you got Experience the CERT is not important just a "ok that´s good" next topic.
Hello. As far as I know there are no certifications that specifically deals with delivery managers. However, the PMP or CAPM in addition to Lean Six Sigma certifications would be a great place to start. All of these certifications deal with exactly the same things you are dealing with now. PMP & CAPM deals with managing of projects using resources that comes from investors, stakeholders and guidelines from start to finish with the deliverable as the goal while using the least amount of resources and yet putting out a competitive product. Lean Six Sigma is a method that relies on a collaborative team effort to improve performance by systematically removing waste and reducing variation. The bottom line as a delivery manager, you're looking to make sure the deliverable is the best quality you can produce within guidelines and eliminating waste at the same time. Simply put efficiency and effectiveness. That's my take. My best to you!
Yes that is one solid reason to get yourself the PMP certification. Check out 650+ other videos on this channel explaining every single project mgmt concept. All the best 🙂👍
Your points do not make sense to me, basically what i understand from your thinking process is that you are looking for free certification for which you need not to be invest time and prepare, which should have full value in market. if you think any certification of this type, do let us know. We will do it. And one more thing whatever you do passing a exam never gives a guarantee that you are genius in that field, but surely it gives you confidence that you can go ahead and do something.
Thanks for sharing your views Sudhir. If you are preparing for your PMP exam, we have hundreds of other videos on this channel that explain every single concept of PMP. This video only giving an alternate viewpoint 😊👍
My first question is: "If no businesses actually use PMP - why do they look for PMP qualified job applicants?" My second question is: "If no one is using PMP in a practical manner at work, does anyone actually keep up with the PDUs? - I wonder what percentage of PMPs actually stay current? Do they publish that information?"
Certifications are most helpful if you have some hands-on experience already. Having PRINCE2 might actually limit your job opportunities to the organizations that practice PRINCE2. If you're looking for a certification as a fresher, CAPM will be a better choice. All the best 👍
I sincerely appreciate your PMP training materials, but this video is kind of contradictory to your channel in my opinion. With a channel called "PMP Lounge" you assume that the content would be geared to PMP information and positive learning. It would be better, just a suggestion, if you had did the video in a Pro's and Con's of the PMP certification instead of a video that is "Why not to get the PMP". This can be distracting and discouraging to some folks, thanks!
+Brandon Muffoletto totally agree with you Brandon. This video is indeed in contradiction to the channel but we have so many videos where we pitch in and suggest PMP that I thought about presenting the other side of the story on why some people decide not to get the PMP. Like I mentioned in the end, I can totally destroy each of these points with my justifications but that's for another video. Thanks and appreciate your feedback 👍
I get what you were trying to do, and while everyone has their own opinion I think a simple title alteration or a pro's vs. con's would probably avoid any question marks from viewers regarding the intentions of said video. In any case, thanks for your videos, I have gotten a lot of great info out of them; especially on how to read PMP questions and the PMP study schedule. Keep up the great work.
it's funny how some people don't understand the purpose of this video and they are still questioning the value of the PMP. I would say it's true if you see PMP not valuable because it's not valuable for you as an individual, it needs commitment and perhaps you don't have that

It's useless in the building construction industry. Many PMs for large construction firms such as Turner Construction and Tishman Construction are not PMPs. The company I work for pulled all 20 of us PMs for a week long training course for this. It was torture. None of it helped me on how to run or build a project.
Stupidest con list ever... everything worth doing is time-consuming and costs money, but the benefits greatly outweigh the sacrifices. Your potential to get better jobs and higher salaries itself outweigh these reasons. A college education costs an average of $20K and four years and PMP certification cost $1K and a few months. I wonder which one is worth it? My BS college education provided me with salaries ranging from $40-80K and PMP certification allowed me to break through $100K salaries... hmm.... wonder if it's worth it.
