Hi All,
In this video, we'll discuss if getting a project management profession certification is worth it and if it actually helps improve your chances of getting a project management job and increase your salary. I'll also share my own personal experience in getting my PMP and if it paid off for me. Lastly, we'll cover questions to ask yourself to determine if you should take the pop exam.
After 3 years of being PMP-certified, I'll discuss:
1. What the requirements are to get a PMP and sit for the exam
2. How you can go about signing up for the PMP exam
3. How much does it cost to get a PMP?
4. How can you get a PMP for cheaper or free?
5. What are the pros to getting a PMP?
6. What are the cons to getting a PMP?
7. Are you guaranteed a better paying job if you get a PMP?
8. What is the passrate for the PMP exam?
9. Is getting a PMP worth it?
10. What's the ROI on a PMP?
11. What was my personal experience with getting a PMP?
12. Will you benefit from getting a PMP?
13. How to decide if you should get a PMP?
14. Who's the best candidate to get a PMP?
15. How to get the most out of your PMP

If you're contemplating a PMP certification, you're already a high-performing individual who aims for continual personal & professional improvement (only the most motivated of us will better ourselves through training/education). YES - the PMP qualifies your experience as a project manager to those who don't know you or your work history. The certification definitely opens doors, and will lead to a MUCH HIGHER income in the years to come. Get it done! Best of luck.

I did my PMP few years ago. Since then, I have seen it open more doors for me - most PM roles say 'PMP preferred' -making it that much easier to get my resume picked up. After that what I got paid was mostly based on how I interviewed and negotiated. PMP certificate is another tool in the kit - it is up to you how you benefit from it.

Thanks for chiming in Uday! Love the perspective and I agree! PMI actually just published a report on the difference in salary between PMPs and non-PMPs in a variety of countries. It looks like PMPs make on average 16% more than their non-PMP counterparts.

I was Project Manager for over 15 years making great money without a PMP. I finally got it. What I realize is Larger Fortune 500 companies dont really care if you got it. They want someone who know their stuff. Going the Agile way by getting a Scrum Master or SAFe certification is the way. PMI change their curriculum because Scrum Alliance and SAFe were taking their customers. This message was to encourage you that you still can make 6 figures without a PMP. Its good to get one because some companies love it but not all.

Emma, this was a wonderful video, thank you. I have been a PM for 6 years now and hold the PMP, PMI-ACP, and PMI-RMP (along with two certifications from the Scaled Agile Framework and two from Scrum). Looking back, my PMP journey was a huge leap forward in my career because it allowed me to truly understand my profession from various perspectives. It also equipped me with the ability to work within any manner of PMO and to do so fully understanding all methods and frameworks. Another thing I will add is that I have never paid for my PDUs. I have used "giving back" (working in my function as a PM practitioner as well as volunteering for PMI), reading plenty of books on PM risk management, or attending PM chapter events. One should not have to spend a dime to fulfill PDUs. My next thing will be to write a white paper on a PM topic, and that activity also generates PDUs.

Great presentation! Thank you for creating these. I passed the PMP exam in April 2014, and while it was not a direct line to a promotion, there is no question that in the big scheme of things, it was a very positive cert to have on my resume. Again, thank you for creating these videos. All the best!

"PMP Preferred" almost always meant "PMP Required" when I was interviewing for roles. I got approved to take the PMP exam, so I put on my resume that I was approved and studying for it, which probably helped me land an IT Projecr Coordinator job.

The best-paid PMPs have a solid technical background. In fact, they have worked in the tech industry in some capacity or another. It is so easy to gather requirements and at times to write the requirements without having to infringe upon the technical resources' time. I have been in the tech industry for 23 years, and I often find myself challenging techies as to what needs to be done and how long it will take to complete a task; speaking from personal technical experience. However, the quantifiers are important as well ie. Numbers. Most project managers only have a broad, shallow, technical understanding of what is actually happening behind the scenes. They also lack the ability to question the resources as to why they have met the deadline for any given deliverable. Best advice: Obtain at least one technical certification. Start with AZ series exams. Example AZ-900 (Microsoft Azure Fundamentals).

Hi Leonardo! Your comment is sooooo timely! I'm posting a video on my top 10 tips for new PMs and my second tip is: know your product. There are a lot of PMs in other industries as well. I work on aerospace/defense manufacturing and most PMPs in my industry don't come from a tech background at all. Mostly mechanical or engineering. I think the important thing would be you need to have some industry experience in your respective industry prior to leading projects.

I just got my PMP a week ago now I'm a little different in that I have my Masters so I got it to enhance my resume. That being said I will say its worth it not only for the knowledge but for the doors it opens. I live in the DMV (DC,VA,MD) area and there are tons of jobs that require it. Depending on what you want to do and whether you have a clearance or not will usually dictate salary. I would say it is well worth the journey although I will say that what you learn via PMI and what you do during your job may be different but the concepts will give you a solid understanding. One last thing, PMP does travel so it is recognized literally everywhere especially globally the only limitations are what you set for yourself.

I got my PMP a few years ago and here is some tips if you are scared of failing.... Study so long you are absolutely sick of studying, especially the areas you are the weakest. Find the junkiest test banks you can find. Challenge yourself and prove or disprove their answers with how PMI would view the correct answer. If you can get through junky questions, you will be better prepared for test taking strategies on real questions. And you will find real questions to be much easier. Do not memorize the formulas. Learn them through practice and understand why the formulas are the way they are. Understand what the solution means in an example. I passed with exceeds expectations on the first try. I had an hour of left before I turned it in. I don't say that to brag. I say all that because those are the strategies I used. They work! If I can do it, YOU CAN TOO! You don't need luck because you got this!

@@RecipeforSuccess1, I haven't started the PRINCE2 yet. It seems like PRINCE2 is easer than the PMP and focuses on processes rather than knowledge. PRINCE2 is also more valued in the Commonwealth like the UK and Australia, whereas the PMP is higher regarded in the USA and Canada, mainland Europe, and the Middle East. My thought process is that having both, the PMP and PRINCE2 Practitioner is a great setup and defiantly unique, which is a good thing in PM.

Hi Prashant - the PMP is offered through PMI only and is a formal exam. The Google PM course is offered by Coursera (like you mentioned without the exam). I hope that answers your question. Either way - I would add any credentials related to project management to your resume!

My opinion: forget “ROI” when it comes to personal investment. You AND your career will grow faster and have a bigger pool of knowledge, skills, etc. to draw from now or later… or not at all if you so choose. There is only upsides to being “overqualified”.

Interesting take! You're suggesting that the data is 'skewed' by the fact that these two groups self-select into PMP vs. non-PMP and their OTHER personality differences are what cause the pay increase....not the actual certification (i.e. correlation instead of causation). Possibly! Thanks for sharing!

I plan on using my military experience to eliminate hours/experience as my MBA cover my 30 hour PMP educational training. This has been very helpful. I plan on getting my PMP certification prior to retirement. My only question: is the PMP certification stronger on a resume vs higher education? Subscribed and liked! Thank you for the content!

I'm wondering if pmp would benefit me. I'm a red seal machinist, millwright and 5th class power engineer (have my firing time for 4th class... but need a break from technical reading...) in Canada. I have 7 years of managing projects, so I meet the requirements to do the pmp. Would there be a benefit you think? My wife is doing pmp right now and it looks quite easy overall. Nothing too crazy and the topics are fairly easy to grasp overall. I'm wanting to be involved in larger scale projects as a decision maker, but I'd also like to be fairly hands on too.

Yes. Completely worth it. Did it on my own budget, paid no more than $600 for all; studied over five months. I passed it on the first try without PM experience (hours from putting events together). The test (back in 2019) involved quite many analytical thought processes but overall, I think the PMP is for those who can see the “big picture.” As for the benefit, I saw a 40% salary increase. I got a new position with a bigger company that took it into account. What are your thoughts on Agile and Lean Six Sigma certs? Do you plan on pursuing those?

Hi Damaso - That's awesome! Congrats on getting through it all and that fantastic pay increase. I see Agile becoming more important, but see the certification as paying off for those in really specific roles or those interested in really specific career paths. As for six sigma, I started my yellow belt for lean six sigma with the intent to complete a green belt. For me, I like the focus and education opportunity but am still in the process of determine ROI.

Hey - that's a great point! I would love to see some data about PMPs and remote work! @AlergicToSnow

My experience is that most companies requiring a PMP have no idea what it means. They do not understand, for instance, that the organization has to be quite project mature or else they will look at the PM following the methodology like they have a third eye. I find I have to do a lot of teaching for my teams and stakeholders so they understand what I’m doing and why. I also know PMPs who really don’t know how to implement the framework. They get the theory, but it’s really not enough. I find PRINCE2 is better for tailoring the process to the type and size of project, and for the organization to understand the process.
@RecipeforSuccess1

@alergictosnow - thanks for sharing your thoughts! For employers who don't realize what comes with the PMP certification, they may be missing out on an opportunity to leverage that experience to grow their PMOs or standardize their project management. Even so, it's interesting to see the number of employers who still list PMP as a 'preferred' qualification. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for this video. I have a MBA and see the PMP as a differentiator, like you mentioned in your video. My concern is that it's not quite clear what the 36 months of PM experience entails. I've heard conflicting accounts. Does setting up a GANTT chart for a project count as working towards that 36 months? If I were to sit for the test, I would need to contact 3 or 4 past employers to get them to sign off. In your experience, how easy was it to get past employers to confirm your PM hours? Thank you!
@RecipeforSuccess1
@RecipeforSuccess1 Год назад
Hi Tyler - PMI will only ask your previous employers to verify your hours if you get audited. It's self-reported. Obviously you could get audited (it happened to my manager actually) and yes it would be a pain to ask previous employers to sign off on your hours, but if you still have a good relationship with them or at least one point of contact, I imagine they would be willing to help you.

@RecipeforSuccess1
@RecipeforSuccess1 2 года назад
Hi Devin - there's no formal vetting, you put your experience into your application to sit for the PMP. However PMI will randomly audit a percentage of applicants - so you'll want to make sure you can back up your experience! This happened to a manager of mine and he had to get all his old managers to sign off on his experience.

Like you said in your video the way you practice pm in the work place vs what pmi is teaching is like night and day. yesterday i spent six hours taking notes on a 20 minute video dealing with the project management process and imitation, planning, execution, monitoring and controlling and closing. this was just me taking notes and making sure i understand. i feel dumb. i started classes on monday and i have seven more days to go. my teacher was/is so laid back that i became even more worried if i am even going to learn anything from him. today i went over the first three modules again to understand why i got the questions wrong i did. i am beyond scared. i dont know what to do..i will continue but what if i fail, will i have to pay that entire fee again? there is no real information of what to study and i wonder if i am maximizing my time effectively studying these modules. i am all over the place.
