Great video! I wish you had spent a bit more time on how they COMPLETELY dropped the whole Mystique/Stryker thing. That bugged the SHIT out of me, in the theater. I kept wondering why NO ONE, neither Stryker nor Mystique, bothered to explain how Wolverine ended up back in Stryker's hands. It's the biggest plot hole of the entire film, in my opinion. And that's saying something!

The worst part about Jennifer Lawrence performance is that they didn't need her to reprise the role. It makes no sense for her to spend her whole life using the same face. In the original trilogy she spent all her time in disguise or Blue. They could've cast anyone to play her using a different identity because the world by now would recognize her face and she would be a fugitive.

The only thing I hate about this movie is how they made Angel suck. And also killed him.

And I can understand people's frustration with Quicksilver. My guess is that they want to parallel the comics where he doesn't want anything to do with him. They kind of build this up through out the film. His mother telling Erik that being involved with him doesn't end well. The family's death(which is also from the comics) was used as example to show this and not just to give Magneto a motive. Than conservation with Mystique about him being a bad guy and finally seeing the destruction caused. This caused him to realize that his mother was right.

Bryan Singer is considered a genius because of The Usual Suspects, and that makes a strong case. However, how many more movies do you have to sit through to realize that he's a decent moviemaker, with a masterpiece under his belt?

9:00 Notice how Scott says "none that we know of" in that same page. Angel was shown in a panel causing destruction throughout New York and IIRC it's the reason why Warren hates Apocalypse. Sidenote: Apocalypse didn't really have mind control, he just had drugs that removed a person's inhibitions as he explains in another panel. It's similar to that drug in the recent Batman game. Because if he did have mind control he would have used it on X-Factor when he captured them instead of trying to convince them to join. And Bryan Singer months prior to the film's release did state that Apocalypse does do something to the horsemen's minds but he didn't want to make it explicit.(I don't know why). There are subtle hints in the film that is the case. Such as where he recruits Storm, that scene with Xavier with the corrupt Cerebro, and the acting of the horsemen where they looked to be in a trance. 16:30 They do state his motive in the film a couple of times. It has nothing to do with wiping out humanity. It's to wipe out technology because he sees it as idolatry. Apocalypse is depicted as a product of his time. He believes the "gods" should rule this earth and be worshipped instead of machines. Similar to Enchantress in Sucide Squad. It's a towel of Babel metaphor, which referenced in this film at one point.

Great review, but: Days of Future Past > First Class. The MAIN storyline of 'First Class' was great, but most of the supporting characters in it were either dull or annoying. I'm cool with them being written off. And 'Days of Future Past' was just much more polished and complete, IMO.

The reason the X Men begin again is because after Days Of Future Past, Xavier brought the school back, yes, but as just a school on learning to control your powers. At the end of Apocalypse, he is bringing back the X Men as Defenders and fighters, something he hasn't done since X Men First Class.

Sweet Dreams' upbeat tempo and catchy lyrics perfectly matched the fast-paced, visually dynamic nature of the scene. Additionally, the lyrics of "Sweet Dreams" contain themes of rebellion and defiance, which fit well with the character of Quicksilver and his role as a member of the X-Men team.

One more note: Angel's death is a reference to the comics where he seemly died in a plane explosion but was later revealed to be alive. So it's like Quicksilver's death and more like Bucky's in The First Avenger. He is likely to come back.

I will say that the film was a disappointment coming off of Days of Future Past, but I still enjoyed it. I think Apocalypse could've been s bit stronger in terms of his character development, and Moira's involvement didn't completely work. But other than those criticisms I enjoyed the rest of the movie. It's fast paced, has a lot of great action, and does a good job of wrapping of the character arcs from the past 2 films. I'm also aware that people have a hard on as far as hating Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, but I actually love this interpretation of the character. As far as female characters in current comic book movie franchises she might be my favorite. Thinking of other female comic book characters, I find character development, and motivations to be a huge issue. (Black Widow letting Captain America leave in the airport battle for no reason comes to mind) However, this new X-Men trilogy has done a good job of fleshing out this version of Mystique, and gives her a compelling arc over the course of these three films. If Apocalypse is the last film in this series, I'll be ok with that. Having said that, I don't want the rights to go back to Marvel. Don't get me wrong Marvel has made some enjoyable popcorn films, but imo none of their output has been on the level of X2, or Days of Future Past.

Quick silver was hinted to be magnetos son from the previous movie it just did not come out of anywhere

Sweet Dreams may not fit the scene... but take a step back on your self congratulatory selection or whatever that was. Cuz while it was slightly more befitting lyrically, beat and tempo wise... awful choice.

1981's All Stood Still by Ultravox would have been my track of choice for the Quicksilver scene.

The TFA "Rathtar" segment is quite misunderstood: Thatt segment intros a vital "mentor" character and a sample of his talents as well as functioning as a "bonding" story-beat connecting him with the younger characters he is to mentor through a shared obstacle... how a very good movie deconstructor like you doesn't see how different that is from Wolverne/AOA is beyond me.

Damn, "Time Stand Still" by Rush would've been so much cooler for Quicksilver's scene!

This was the worst X-Men movie besides "X-Men Origins: Wolverine". For all of its flaws, "X-Men: The Last Stand" was better than this by a mile.

Ashamed that we never had a definitive X-Men film. Either there's wolverine oh btw the x-men are here too, Wolverine the movie, First class eh sort of.... not really, Time travel to fix stuff so we can have a proper x-men film and now it's eh... Fuck it let's not even try.

I think that the time skips are really the biggest issue, you have to spend so much time reintroducing the characters and their recent activities, that you lose time developing them. In the end the story and the characters suffer, while the play time is still bloated.

The best Fox comic book movie is Logan.

Apocalypse was suppose to strike fear in me? I was supposed to care Apocalypse exists? Color me blue with surprise.

I LIKED X MEN apocolypse and ive seen it several times now. It DOES have some interesting continuity plot points, such as (after the chaos ending of the last film) Magneto is living quietly under an assumed name in Eastern Europe having made peace with himself & humans. Lets not forget him saving a man's life in the steel mill, & starting a family very profound the FIRST time we care about him. PLUS I also like the idea of a new villain for a change, having had what...5 previous films ALL with Magneto as the enemy, Apocolypse being both Egyptian & an original X man was a great idea he's very well explained & justifyed, (there's even a theory that Alien's built the pyramid's)this is a...smaller X men offering lacking the usual interplanetory threat story, & that's just it, the change for the better, all the story aspects work together- how Magneto is back to his old self having been duped by Apocolypse, & realising it in the end. I do agree about some unnecessary characters, but disagree about Quicksilver not telling Magneto he's his son at a time when the world's at steak, plus if it were real he would definitaly say so to give him pause for thought. there's NO confusion as to Apocolipse agenda he wants to begin the world again with him as supreme leader, Brian Singer is making the point that sometimes the villain's make sense, such as Apocolipse destroying all nuclear threats around the globeif only that hapened for real huh?

I just re-watched it for the first time since seeing it in theatres in 2016. While it’s a huge step down from DoFP, it’s not as bas as I thought I had remembered.

I used to be a huge x-men fan and have been waiting since I was a kid to see them on the big screen, and now I hate them so much I feel like the characters and characterization, the plot and themes, the back stories and everything is wrong. Yep....tyvm Fox.

They should have revolved the whole thing about Magneto and Quicksilver. Quicksilver seems like fan-service because of his popularity in the last movie. Also Apocalypse sucked as a villain.

I found this movie to be passable at best. Its the type of movie you'd only want to watch if you were marathoning the entire X-Men franchise, rather than watching it alone by itself. Really disappointing that it turned out like this considering how great of a job Bryan Singer did with X-Men: Days of Future Past. At this point Fox should consider doing a half-half deal just like what Sony did with Spider-Man. As for the Fantastic Four, Marvel should absolutely get the rights back 100%. Fox has done nothing but tarnish them, they don't deserve to own them even partially. The only character I don't want Marvel to get back is Deadpool, because they'll make him more kid-friendly. Because god forbid a Disney movie ever becomes R......

You don't think deeply enough into these things to maintain my respect for you as a reviewer. Sorry, but there are a hundred other youtubers thinking outside the box on their breakdowns of these things. Yours is really superficial and error prone. You picked the wrong genre to play so loose with. Not 100% wrong but 50/50 doesn't give you enough credit for your POV to hold MY interest. Yeah, I over think stuff. Maybe I should do the videos and you can watch and get some perspective on these movies from ME.

Your choice of song to replace sweet dreams is so poor. I get that you think the lyrics match up more which they do. But sweet dreams was such a better song choice because it got you pumped up for the scene

A small critique. When you reviewed Suicide Squad you complained that the music was too on the nose but here you complain that its not on the nose enough. I agree both film sucked but I prefer music to fit the scene and that’s about it. I always thought Apocalypse looked like a blue tank unlike the film version that just looks like a plastic toy. Also thought it was weird how so many people lost their minds over Psylocks cleavage in this film when Scarlet Witch was displaying more chest in the Civil War.

Well, we can all agree that X-Men Apocalypse is really not that good. It's not terrible, but compared to the X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Its just mediocre at beast.

They should change the rules & NOT be repetitive!! I enjoyed part of it NOT all of it I know you want to see heroes combined but they all should change. I’ve seen this before! X-men 2002 etc They’re just going to reunite & fight crime thats it. Same things 👎 it’s a replay 👎 my advice to them is : be more Creative and don’t re-write what you’ve already written! (2002 X-men movies) Be more creative. It makes things more exciting

X-Men: First Class was NOT "better than any of the X-Men movies" Singer directed. It's not better than X2 and it's not better than Days of Future Past. X-Men: First Class is excellent. Kevin Bacon is terrific, but the development and depiction of Banshee, Angel, Darwin, Emma Frost and Azazel ranged from woefully inadequate to downright lousy.
