If you haven’t done it by now I would go with a 29 gall same footprint as a 20 long but have extra depth and can house a larger variety of smaller species

Pro tip. If you get handy you can make a 20 gal long into a 20 gal tall and stick crestie in there.

I keep two garters in a 40 breeder, which is the smallest size I’d recommend (even for 1). They’re super active and can get longish despite being thin/narrower than other colubrids that get the same length.

I’d say a green anole is good too. They can be personable, they’re good for handling after five minutes, plus they’re small. They have a simple diet, being insects, plus they have independently moving eyes, like chameleons. They can also change color from green to deep brown
@AllCanadianReptileGirl

Only reason they change colors is because they are stressed I believe
@Mbapaparaue

omg stpbro any reptile that can change colors can change colors because of stress, but they would naturally get darker to bask so they can absorve more heat, or if they get lighter, it’s to cool off because they’re too hot

The Reptile Guy I didn’t mean for a beginner. I would say a 40 would be better as well. I’d say these are okay for handling, since they will sit on you and stay there. I agree that they’re not the best for it though since they are small and fast

I LOVE my rubber boa! He's so sweet, so calm, so easy to handle, and so easy to house. He's an old man, probably 15+ years (I got him as a mature adult, so I'm not 100% sure his age), and only around 2' long. He does brumate longer than other snakes I've kept, like 5 months, which isn't for everyone, but I don't see it as a big drawback. He's such a chill snake. They are notoriously good at escaping though, so definitely make sure enclosures are secure. About once a week he checks his enclosure over for holes.

I have four BABY Oregon Red-spotted Garters in a 20 gallon long terrarium and it's perfect for them. But once they have grown, they are going into a 4x2x2. These are a wonderful, extremely entertaining, and pretty snake. I'd agree with you, though, about how much better they do in groups. I really hope nobody gets just one garter. They just really blossom when they are with other Garters. Congratulations on your Rubber Boa! Looking forward to updates. Finally, another snake that can do very well in a 20 gallon enclosure is the Kenyan Sand Boa or the Rough-scaled Sand Boa - especially the males which are about the same size as a male Hognose.

My very first reptile was a garter snake that I caught in my yard (yes, I know better now!). I'm not 100% sure what type of garter snake it was, but full grown, it was about 2 feet long and pretty slender. I kept it in a 20 long tank on aspen, gave him a basking spot of about 90-95 degrees, and fed him a diet of earthworms and minnows that I put in his water dish and let him fish for. It was super fun to watch. I never recommend catching and keeping wild animals, but i learned a lot from that little guy. He started my lifelong love of reptiles. He lived a happy, long life and that 20 long tank was perfect for him.

such good suggestions, including some really cool ones I hadn't heard of, like of course number 1. I would suggest a 6th non-reptile, but definitely reptile adjacent pet: pet land snails. a 20 Gallon would be perfect for a few of those, and the eggs can be fed to lizards and turtles. I'm not talking your standard garden snail, but rainforest snails that grow to be about 2 inches and live between 5-10 years.

For hognose definitely 20 long, they're pretty active! My boy is in a 29 but it's the same length of a 20 long. And there are definitely outliers for leopard geckos too-I took in a re-homed male and he came with a 20 long but he's way too big for it! So I stuck him in a 40 and he's super spoiled haha.

All lizards can be kept in bioactive enclosures

To my knowledge the only limit on what reptiles can be kept on a bioactive or zoological grade setup is current care information and the research done to replicate the proper ecosystem. I part of my career is setting up and building bioactive enclosures for reptiles and amphibians. If you have a species your interested to move to bioactive I can probably give you a rough estimate of what you will need to get for the exhibit, and how the care will change for the species in question

My husband got me a 29 gallon Repti-Habitat for Christmas. Is there something that is more arboreal that would appreciate the extra height? I was thinking a tree frog communal maybe.

!! African house snake! That’s my baby I own right now. He’s a black African house snake. He’s a super sweet baby, definitely a food lover. But he take his food super gentle. They are beautiful and he has iridescent scales.

Love to see a bunch a snakes on the list. I really want a garter snake and it would be awesome to Cohan some, so what other species of garters would you recommend? Btw never take a break from the snakes

I think most species of garters can be cohabbed as long as you watch them to make sure they’re all chill and the same gender. What size tank and how many do you plan on keeping? :)

You’re turning me into a reptile lady, damn it. Was just watching this because I have a spare 20 long and was curious. Now I need a fat tailed gecko

20 Gallons imo are the perfect tank. Easy to move but big enough to where it doesn't feel like animal abuse. I use one for my Leopard Gecko and he loves it :) He's a baby now so might upgrade to a little bigger but I love how easy a 20 is.

What do you think about a tokay as a second reptile? I am fully aware that they are extremely defensive but I am willing to go through that

When I was married, my wife and I kept lots of snakes. My western hognose bit her once, and managed to get his fangs in her before we got him off. The bite wasn't bad. It swelled up a little, and she said it itched a little and she could feel pressure, but that it wasn't very painful. It lasted a few days. The bite was a feeding response. We didnt have alcohol nearby because he was normally a very calm snake. He struck and managed to catch the webbing between her thumb and forefinger. He walked his jaw up and got some venom in before I got back with the alcohol for him to smell. Hognose bites are incredibly rare, and not dangerous when they happen.

I'm developing a little hypothesis about you reptile people: you love handling critters. I got 2 dogs that don't get handled as much as you handle and hold your reptiles. I saw another video of WWR holding a relatively young golden retriever puppy for the entire video. I dunno how long it takes to shoot one of these videos, but that pup was so damned good for being held that long!! Mine need to run off and play, there's no way they'd let you hold them like that unless it was sleepy time. That said, countless herpers let their snakes or lizards sit on them for entire video shoots. TLDR: I think deep down you herpers are all big snuggly softies at heart, and it's adorable to watch!
