idk what the episode is called but the one with Phil and his sister fighting was really sad to me, cause you find out why they hate each other so much is because they blame each other for their childhood dog getting out from the backyard only to be hit and killed by a milk truck. I had dogs as a kid so that was very sad for me to imagine if my dog got loose and that happened to them.

It's one of those moments that made me really hurt for a Helga spinoff. (The Patakis) She's an angel. She really deserved to get a series, even just a miniseries maybe, to show her coming out of her shell & shine. It's funny how Arnold's a smart, cool kid and great character but Helga was just written so wonderfully, she overshadows pretty much the entire cast. Often, I'd suggest.

"Helga On the Couch" is one of my favorite Helga episodes. Although when we see the flashback of how Helga met Arnold, I still can't help but feel amazed that the psychologist didn't feel the need to call social services after hearing the neglectful family part of Helga's story. Because I'm pretty sure irl therapists, psychiatrists and psychologists are legally obligated to contact social services if there's ever cases of things like child abuse or neglect.

Their response, CALL MY FREAKING PARENTS! Oh they told him he would have to go to school facilitated family courses or they'd call child protective services (they didn't later on, btw, despite evidence i was still being abused) but that was it. @@wintermoon7003 Maybe the only good thing I can say is good about Honey Boo Boo was that it enabled Alana (Honey Boo Boo) and her sisters to escape June and her mess. That woman is toxic, and not just because she exploited her children. For instance, a man she dated molested her eldest daughter, and then years later, she got back with the same man AFTER knowing the truth. It's one of the things that led eventually to her arrest and losing custody of Alana to her eldest, Anna. At least the girls had a bit of peace after the fad passed, just doing the shows every now and again to get some more money. Last I heard, Anna passed from cancer, the other sisters are married, and Alana lives in Denver with a boyfriend and is studying nursing

Bob isn't just neglectful, he's verbally abusive as well. I think they didn't show as much as they wanted to with his abusive behavior due to it being a kids' show (hell, they were stretching the limits a bit for their target audience even then.) I can see Bob as a fuel for Miriam's drinking, actually. He always seems focused on his own needs and pays no attention to his wife's needs; she always seems to be serving him (when she's not passed out drunk or hung over) and never the other way around, and I can't help but wonder what goes on behind the scenes. It's a harrowing thought. That aside, I think the portrayal of Helga's broken family dynamic and how it influences her behavior must have helped a lot of kids back then. Kids shows most of the time don't show the dark side of the world, so although cartoons that aren't dark serve a very good purpose, I think the inclusion of Helga's issues with her parents made some kids feel like they're not alone; that these things happen and it's the parents' fault and it's not because they're a "bad kid." They don't try to push any narrative except that most of Helga's problems can be traced to her family's behavior. They pretty much tell it like it is, and I praise the show for its boldness. The episode "Helga On The Couch" is one of my all time favorites with how it *directly* addresses the connection between Helga's behavior and her unstable, unsupportive home life, and though her obsession with Arnold is unusual and unhealthy, I still like that her therapist reminded her that it's okay to feel that way as long as it hurts no one. I do wish we as adults had gotten a follow up episode where her therapist calls CPS on the parents and teaches her healthier ways to cope with her trauma. Helga just made do at the time; Arnold had shown her kindness and that not all people are bad, and though she dealt with her crush in often unhealthy ways I can still see the positive impacts Arnold makes in her life that she would suffer without.

I really resonated with Helga as a kid, as a younger sister who had a beloved older sister myself, I really understood the shadow an older sibling could cast on you. @ForeverLaxx
@ForeverLaxx Месяц назад
What bothered me about their dynamic is that they showed the constant stress of being perfect in order to live up to their parents' expectations was ruining her life, eventually resulting in the two of them coming to an understanding and mutual respect... until another episode later where Helga is back to resenting her "perfect" sister and being petty about her again. No idea why they erased that previous growth.

I like the idea of Ms. Perfect on paper. The message of not judging people or making assumptions about them based on the image they present of themselves in public, especially if you think they’re seemingly better than you, is a pretty good one in my opinion that’s held up surprisingly well. In the age of social media where everyone can construct a perfect image of themselves through what they post, it’s easy to look at vloggers or Instagram models and other such online influencers and feel they have a perfect life. When in reality that online image doesn’t tell the full story. You don’t really know these people’s lives or the struggles they might not post about. In that way, I can understand why this episode resonates with some people, given how well it’s message has aged. Though, I defiantly agree the plot twist of Lyla being poor came off a bit forced, and the overall structure of the episode had a more cliche sitcom vibe. The execution could’ve been better.

The lack of Olga episodes might bother me just a little... they weren't sad in such a direct way ig, but they did make me wish the two sisters could have patched things up. I'm with you on it being my favorite of the day, even with ones as excellent as Rocko's Modern Life as contenders. Hey Arnold wasn't the kinda show that consistently had me laughing all that much, but holy crap the sheer level of feeling & relating to real life type interactions. Nothing else was doing it the way it did back then. I've sometimes wondered how the show would have fared if they had gone with more... normal looking character design. Despite 'em looking weird, while watching the show, the odd looks of them all seem to fall away. That's how good the storytelling & dialogue is in Hey Arnold, for the most part. Something about it didn't appeal to me at first glance, but seeing how much wholesomeness and depth I missed out after seeing this video, I should've at least given it a chance. I'm especially intrigued about "Pigeon Man" and "Arthur's Christmas". Guess I'll add this to my to-watch list.

There's also the episode where Olga comes home announcing that she's engaged and plans to quit her studies. There are three factors here that make it an Honorable Mention: 1) Miriam in despair tells Olga to "not make the same mistake she did". Miriam has shown in a few episodes how she used to be a pretty cool, level headed person, probably leading a good, successful life, like in the Mother's Day one. She even took over for Bob at the beeper business when he got injured and did a bit too well. (But she quit when she realized she was turning into Bob in a dark way.) But her warning to Olga means she did the exact same thing to marry Bob: She quit her studies and gave up her life to be with him. THIS is why she drinks, and is often seen just apathetic towards life itself. 2) It turns out Olga's fiancée is a complete gold digger and was probably planning on leaving her once he got into Bob's will, or even have a worse scenario than the imagine spot shown. 3) When Helga learns about Olga's fiancée's scheme, she eventually decides Olga doesn't deserve her possible future with that guy. We know their parents are a toxic mess, and that in a way Helga should resent Olga for being the favorite. But Olga is literally the one person in Helga's family to actually care for her. While Helga is too proud to admit she would help her, she's not letting this guy ruin her older sister's life, which is one of the coolest things Helga has done for another character.

I'd like to note that Pigeon Man only said pineapple on pizza was strange, not that he didn't enjoy it.

The Christmas episode was the first time I ever cried for a show/movie in general. Let alone a cartoon! I definitely would NEVER cry over a cartoon. It was fake. But yet, Hey Arnold, when the daughter came home finally, I had a few tears come out. Hey Arnold was the first show to ever get me to cry over a cartoon/show. Still don't cry over them now as well. But how could you not mention the turtle scene?! Where they rescued the turtle and send him back home! I really liked that one! His grandma was helping him as well! I think this is part of the reason why I love giving around Christmas much more rather than receiving. Don't get me wrong, I am grateful for any gift I get, but I feel more joy when I get the right gifts that I know my family and friends will love. I go ALL OUT on Christmas.

Hey Arnold! was always my favorite show growing up in the 90's early 2000's just because of the raw emotion. And I think everyone on the show I could relate to someone I actually knew in real life. It was just a fantastic show.

So happy to see Chocolate Boy & Road Trip get attention, not to mention Helga and the Nanny I hardly hear anything about post season 1 episodes other than Helga on the Couch & Parents Day, when some of the series' best is present then. (one example being Stuck in a Tree. It's one of the most memorable episodes of the entire series to me, but it has very little coverage)

12:34 I associate that moment with one of two pivotal moments in my life where my Mom dismissed my tears over a "dumb cartoon", even though it touched me so much I cried. I've been having troubles crying ever since. It's tragic, but whatever. Good episode.

Kid that too young to understand clearly just saw Hey Arnold as simply entertaining cartoon. For much mature audience it goes deeper and deeper, affecting feeling and thought about life

I miss when cartoons weren’t just a distraction for kid. They treated them, not as something to entertain, but teach and aren’t as simple as pretty colors.

The Pigeon Man EP is so relatable to me. Humans are prone to judge each other by nature, but animals... they cannot do that. The EP shows you what's like to feel alone ... To feel depressed. You can tell this man has given up on humanity, and rightfully so. We miss a lot of these details as children. The quote, "I understand birds... It's people I don't understand!" So true. We always spend our time trying to understand why other humans do what they do or how can do horrible things. He has a Shinobu complex the idea of disliking humans. Or wanting to separate oneself from other humans.
