Top 5 DARKEST Hey Arnold Episodes

Here's a slightly older video I made that was originally taken down as it was blasted with Copyright strikes from the fantastic copyright system. Hey Arnold was always a more down to earth show for Nickolodeon at the time, but was also quite famous for having its fair share of dark and creepy moments too!

Anyone else ever wonder why Helga was never taken away from her parents? I mean, if you've ever been to therapy as a child, then you know that if you even hint at your parents being neglectful or abusive in any way they call CPS.
@ZefDavenport

Back in the 90's we didn't have that much protection. By that logic, my father should have been arrested when I was a kid for psychological abuse to my mother and me, but he never was.
@Bluemilk92
@Bluemilk92 5 лет назад
You're not wrong. "Hello, when I was 10, I showed my 8 year old brother my penis, and a porn website. I guess that means you have to arrest my entire extended family" That sounds like a joke, but I've seen CPS try and take a family members daughter away away, 20 years after the supposed "incident." It took everyone involved, including the "victim" aggressively insisting their overreaction to settle the issue. I'm not trying to demonize their job, as sexual abuse is among the most disgusting common crimes. But human sexuality is super complicated.

Doesn't Olga have a degree in psychology? It would explain her really sugar coated behavior, especally toward Helga. If she had noticed her little sister was neglected and knows the effects it has, Olga may be trying to be especially nice toward Helga to heal some of the damage. She may even be trying to give Helga someone in her family who loves and notices her no matter how she behaves. It comes off as disingenuous to Helga because at this point any kindness is suspicious.

I always saw this show as a small child, and I never realized that it took place in basically NYC, or that Helga's mom was an alcoholic or Chocolate Boy was representing a junkie. It really speaks to how kids USED to be treated as more mature and able to handle more adult themes. Like, you could never do that with children's cartoons today, but honestly, if I had fully been aware of those things, it wouldn't have freaked me out or made me go cry to my mom, I would've thought that was cool and had felt more grown up for having been able to see it. And I doubt kids today aren't capable of that exact same treatment.

@Azby64
@Azby64 5 лет назад
I don't think it's "not babying" kids quite so much as disguising heavy adult topics in a way that's silly and also generally relatable to children. It makes it a pleasure for parents to watch with their kids and also for just adults in general. You get to exercise your crew's creativity and further broaden the demographic.
@kmac2300
@kmac2300 5 лет назад
Most of those things are true except the backdrop (the creator was trying to aim for a West Coast city like Seattle or Portland). I think part of it was cartoons like Hey Arnold tried to talk to kids like they were adults and gave them the space to handle the bigger subjects like addiction and neglect. I feel like cartoons since have taken a step back, giving into the easy tropes and childish nature than giving kids the benefit of the doubt that they'll be able to handle tough subjects.

This show was on regularly when I was about 5-9 years old. You can figure out my age from that… Never picked up on half the stuff it was telling me, but I'll admit that I was a pretty sheltered tract house trash kid. Turned out my dad was an alcoholic, but I didn't really know that until I was a teen. Helga's mom hits me hard now that he's been dead for 8 years. He had similar ways of hiding it to how she did (the "cooking wine" all but disappeared while dad cooked dinner less and less). I don't really think that the show was trying to get the message out there for kids who might have been unable to see it, but just imply that Helga's at home life is really messed up. I'm curious, how do you see kids being treated now so differently from 20-ish years ago? Nickelodeon seems to be in a slump animation-wise (actually network tv is in a bit of a slump) but at the same time kids have a lot more options thanks to the internet. If anything, I worry about how much information they're going to find that isn't presented in such a careful way as shows like this did. There are no filters online.
@ReverieOfThorns
@ReverieOfThorns 5 лет назад
I personally think that because children nowadays are so babied, they couldn’t handle something like this. My eleven year old sister and many others in her age group act rather young and immature for their age. I blame their access to the internet and the ignorance of parents for that, but maybe that’s just me

I wish we had more shows like Hey Arnold that actually taught you something. Helgas episodes were always sad because her parents would neglect her and favored Olga, and Helga wasn't so close to Olga either. An episode that wasn't dark but was somewhat sad was how Olgas fiance was a con artist he points out no one would believe Helga if she told her family the truth about him. She resorts to blackmail that shows that no matter how her and her sister aren't close she ultamitley did the right thing in the end. For Helga seeing a therapist that was also dark and sad. I always thought her father Bob, was a jerk, but Steve Reviews was on to something he could have been physically abusive or borderline abusive. She was.definitely neglected though. I think Helgas mom Miriam is alcoholic because she hates her married life with Bob.

Honestly a lot of the darker episodes for me had nothing to do with ghosts or the like but the actual real life issues these kids dealt with. Poverty, addiction, neglect, perfectionism, loss of family/friends, abandonment, bullying and what can lead to it, violence, mugging, etc. Real life can be insanely dark and this show would often deal with that darkness. Ghosts can be spooky but these are things that actually happen in real life and thus feel more scary to me as it's something a great many people will or have dealt with in their lifetime.

The episode that scared me the most as a kid I think you didn’t include it but it was about Arnold’s grandfather telling him about this person who invented things always invented things in the basement and one day while it was raining a flash of lighting electrocuted him and killed him and the said that if you go down there his ghost will get you there everyone stated hearing noises down stairs and this whole time it was grandpa doing something but I don’t remember it it was the most scariest episode I’ve seen and what’s worse about it I watched it at 11:30

Wheezin' Ed, Four-Eyed Jack, Stoop Kid, Big Ceasar. The urban legends of Hey Arnold are just as creepy as the supernatural myths of Gravity Falls. Gravity Falls is scary because of how outlandishly dangerous the supernatural appears to be. (Shape-shifters, killer ghosts, Aliens robots. Oh My!) Hey Arnold is scary because the Legends actually have some real life truths to them. (Urban Legends do Exist for a reason.)

I have always been really anti social and when i was 13 it was normal to be stolen away by cartoons but hey Arnold caught my eye the most and it actually encouraged me to become an artist. I used to draw fanart, all the way up to the hey Arnold jungle movie and being apart of the fan page. So basically was a magafan for about 7 years. The characters are so down to earth and Helga has always been my favorite and most relatable character, especially her family dynamic. I love this show so muxh it hurts. I absolutely loved this show as a child and I'm honestly surprised I remember all of these episodes. Helga on the couch is probably the darkest, in my opinion as for the other episodes, you kind of expected them to be "Creepy "and "dark" from the get go, so it didn't really hit you like Helga on the couch. Plus, it was real. Well, no, it's a cartoon, but it held topics that were very real. Though, the fact they had a woman kill her ex and her sister while in her bride gown, humming the march and tossing rice is pretty... Wow. But, as a child it didn't phase me much and only when I got older did I really understand how twisted that really was. It didn't really show anything, but seeing CSI, Criminal Minds, and other shows of that nature where you see "corpses" of victims, it doesn't leave much to the imagination.

Are you talking about the episode where they dressed as aliens? That wasn't war of the world's, that was a reference to "the twilight zone", specifically an episode where because the lights go out on one specific street, they start getting more and more paranoid, someone suggests aliens, and it ends with them killing someone accidentally because they thought he was an alien, and then it cuts to actual aliens. They didn't interfere at all, and they reminisced about how dangerous paranoia is, especially for humans. I can't remember the name though

I remember seeing that episode as a kid and thinking to myself the fact that someone, somewhere, experienced this harrowing hair raising fear is just so fucked up. And in the end Arnold and Gerald are already hardened by the city they live in that when they eventually do get dunked in trash, they're like 'eh, wasn't that bad'. Them running for their lives from the fear of being forcefully dunked in the trash was worse than actually being subjected to such. Gave my puerile brain a lot to think about.
