Mainstream historiography can't always be trusted. There were history documents written - The Tarikh al-Sudan - history of the Mali Enpire, The Tarikh al-fattash - history of the Songhai empire. The Kano Chronicle King Njoya also wrote one that's only in French atm.

Aj Porsche Africans had written languages before Europeans or Arabs came to Africa.. The meroitic language,Old Nubian,Geez, and the west Africans had Nsidibi it was a script found among a number of Cross River peoples which owed nothing to foreign exemplars- each symbol is an ideograph, as in Chinese. Because each symbol represented a concept, it could be used between peopes speaking different anguages; over 500 signs are recorded, and there is reason to believe that they were only a small partof the whole.

This needs to be shown for those who think philosophy was invented and then spread around the globe. Thanks for bringing this info. A lot of African nations education systems are still in placed from colonialism and emphasize European (or Islamic) History. When I asked my Ma had she learned about Queen Nzinga in school, she said no but they were taught about European empires such as the Portuguese 😒. Thanks again for bringing the knowledge to the forefront! It's sorely needed!

During my early childhood, and even through high school education in Ghana, all our textbooks and history books were written either by Ghanaian, Nigerian as well as other African scholars. Yes, we learned about our oppressors because they were and are still woven into our history and our scholars understood the need to identify them by origin in those history books, so as to enable us to appreciate how hard our Ancestors fought for our continent. This experience planted a seed of self-worth within the very core of my being, because to this day, I can boldly say that my first exposure to academic intelligence was from African scholars whose works served many children, the wholesome and longlasting dose of African learning. I clearly remember our Class five aka 5th-grade teacher Miss Zigah, teaching us to read the Medu Ntchr through a grade school syllabus established by the Education Ministers of the Nkrumah Government. Those pro-Africa textbooks instituted and enforced by our First President, remained within the syllabus until JJ Rawlings backed by Gadafi plunged the nation into several coup detats, which completely derailed the standard of Ghanaian education, but #Sankofa is back in motion, repairing those bridges that lead to the #AfroAcademic art of #KnowingTheSelf.

This brother took the time out his day and made an awesome video, and some people decide to bring negativity to his comments. Its so many emotional statements coming from " Enlightened, Conscious, etc. " people who succeed at killing the vibe of the video. The narrative of Muslims/Arabs enslaving Africans has so many flaws in it along with Europeans " TAKING " us from Africa and making us slaves. It has some truth to it, but some don't realize that every time you make that statement, you make our ancestors look weak and gullible. We all know that wasn't the case. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but the disrespectful comments aren't necessary. Especially amongst people who claim to be " WOKE " !!!! Keep up the good work soldier! HomeTeam History! Greetings of peace and other blessings. Brother, this video was well received and valued as a gem. I'm a student of life sciences and give ample time on a daily basis to cataloguing and discerning information. The interest in Africa and its historical heritage is important because the last 800 years is a period of upheaval for African peoples. The reorienting and reclaiming of knowledge systems will allow our culture and heritage to retake its place on the world stage. In so doing the balance of the social and cultural movement of humanity will reconnect its legitimate stages and influences. All human beings will come to understand its contributions and excellences as individuals and larger cultural/ ethnic constructs. On such a global platform, the fusion of people and ideas will not be on the basis of misfortune and shame but the willing and enthusiastic interplay of human commonality and curiosity.

They said the trade in books was the biggest trade. But people always say Africans only had an oral tradition. 🤔 You're absolutely right about this and it is a great point that needs to be explained. Remember Africa was the first continent into which Islam spread from Southwest Asia, during the early 7th century CE.. So we're talking the 11th century of course by then Africans had done learned everything about Arabic , mastered it, and they would use it for writing. It's been established that's one the reasons Africans never felt they needed to come up with scripts of their own. Now the question is did Africans contributed too much in Arabic and ended up loosing their own mores for Islam? Even though big African figures like KANKAN MOUSSA gave the impression to have fully embraced Islamic culture, but most people don't know it was actually by desire to learn about the unknown as much as one can to be aware and well informed. But gosh did the spiritual got it over reality for Muslim Africans? Well It's still a great debate till today but the majority of some African decided to be Muslim and follow that. But the short answer to your question is that this was late in the 11th century and Arabic was well known and mastered by Africans already. You Should check out guys like JEAN PHILLIP OMOTUNDE or DOUMBI FAKOLY for truth African history among others. Also the manuscripts of the city Timbuktu( said TUMBUTU by natives) are all written using the Arabic alphabet but the majority of them is actually for an African audience that lies in the deepest part of the Mali empire, which included the actual today's mali, Gambia, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Niger, Burkina, part of Nigeria and so on. They used the fact that Arabic is a phonetic language to write in their African languages. You can write about any languages with Arabic scripts sound wise because its a phonetic. language. I'll finish by saying it's sad what is happening in Mali right now to the great city of TUMBUTU

But when I mentioned this to a person who claimed they were Morrocan, they said they were not black and the black people from the south are the usurpers. Then we see what's going on with black people in Libya. It's all very complex.

Thanks for doing a nice presentation about African history and civilization. There were many Islamic civilizations and before Africans were taken away to the west by the Europeans , Islam was our way of life, based upon divine laws and intellectual elevation and civilization. Before the Europeans introduced the bible and the worship of jesus a white god, Islam was our way of life and if anyone does some research they will find their Islamic heritage. I thank God All mighty for returning me to the way of my ancestors and away from the disbelief of the western life style and spiritual misguidance. People have to understand , man , life and the universe is Created...from Allah we came and back to him we all shall return Ameen.

Great video! I think that the statement about Abdurahman the 4th scholar having “Gods consciousness “ probably is supposed to mean that he was god conscious and feared god as this is called taqwa in Islam and one of the highest virtues. I don’t think it was a title refers to him as having Gods consciousness or having a mind similar to god, because that would be blasphemy and shirk in the Islamic world veiw. I might be wrong so please correct me if that is the case, otherwise great video!

I really love your videos. Thank you so very much. But Sir, I wish you would put in the time periods in which these people lived. Because, of westernization, it is hard to place these scholars. You may also use in conjunction with those drummed in our heads too. I mean no harm in saying this.... But, sometimes one may need to teach using proximity as a tool for better grasping the subject matter. Like going into the world/mind of a psychotic in order to understand it's next move. I hope I am making a little sense. I only mean you the world of good young man. & I am proud of & for you for you efforts to educate the public/God's Own. Was curious as to the timeline....

Yes I agree! He should include dates and timelines to his sources. It would make his already excellent work even more credible.

Nantz Stein knowledge wherever it may come from , whether it is from Islam,Buddhism,Christianity or whatever. If it’s good ,enlightens and empowers men to be better than they are ,then it’s from God.what scares you ?

Well that was very interesting thank you ! Do you have any book (or any sources) to start learning about scholarship in Timbuktu (or the general region) ? I've been facineted by this city and those scholars but it's pretty hard to find what was written in their books... Anyone have any suggestion ? Thanks again, learning something less eurocentric is always very nice.

I've never come across any source suggesting or proving Ahmad Baba was "black". The use of the nisba Sudani was probably a regional marker, not a "racial" one. In fact, one of the Moroccans who met him in North Africa explicitly said he wasn't "Sudan" or "black." You should read Mahmoud Zouber's book on Ahmad Baba for a good introduction to his life and works.

They were African Muslim scholars... They definitely viewed themselves heavily as Muslims.

Not sure what you're getting at ... you're juxtaposing Africa and Muslim as if they are two continents or two religions. There is no comparison. Being a devout Muslim does not make one "less African." Muslim isn't a nationality.

Antoine Bandele Islam is a culture and a way of life..My point was he didn't mention much about the being Muslims which they seen themselves as first..plus I highly doubt they knew the word Africa and they most certainly didn't use the world Africa....We know they viewed themselves as Muslims first bc they fought with other "Africans" around them.

Most African countries and nations didn't see themselves as a Pan-African culture until colonialism. I do agree there. It was just the way you presented your original comment was a bit perplexing. Islam is indeed a culture/way of life but you presented it as just the religion. But yeah, the notion of Pan-Africanism is a more modern concept.

Mk Km So what? Most Arabic Scholars saw themselves as Muslims first too. What's your point? Would you have said the same thing if he made a "Top 5 Arabic Scholars" video?

Antoine Bandele I never presented it as a religion esp not in the western sense I don't know where you read that from in my words.
