I'm just happy that with their CS-80 V4, Arturia finally gave us something that is close enough to the real thing that I can play it from my Hydrasynth Deluxe (with poly-aftertouch and the ribbon) and be pleased with the result.

Tielo, that’s a good POV, I think it’s so hard when it comes to the VSTi emulations. My personal feeling is that the sound is there, but the experience isn’t, so it’s cool that you chimes in with how you use it with the Hydrasynth

@@gautrstafr do you have a Cs80 ? Deckard dream sounds nothing like the real thing ... (it's possible to replicate famous Cs sounds it, as it is possible with most versatile polysynths) With a similar architecture, it's even easier, but it does not make a clone

@@noiretblancvie-afterhours true, sound is there (the V4 update has been modeled after my Cs80) Sincerely, I always managed to recreate any sounds from the original on the V4 Using an hydrasynth as master keyboard makes the experience more pleasant, but, as you point, does not replace the experience to play the real thing The keyboard action, the controllers, even the appearance, contribute (in my opinion) to the experience of playing such an instrument

Roland System-8 nails the JP-8 sound, IMHO, - plus it's 10x cheaper, and more importantly, at my age, 10x lighter. - I had daily access to a JP-8 for well over a decade, and still own a JP-6 and Super Jupiter (early version), - personally I find the JP-6 a much more versatile synthesizer, compered to the 8. The sounds on the 6 may lack the girth of the 8, but for that same reason it doesn't always dominate the mix the way an 8 does.

No questions about your list however, as someone who is very curious about the TI2 Id love to hear more about it ( a video?) and particularly how it distinguishes itself from the gamut of synths available in 2022. Beyond the fact that its a classic in its own right and has a place in a synth collection.

The TAL J8 more than scratches my Jupiter 8 itch, sounds stunningly warm, fat and musical. The developer owns a Jupiter 8 and has painstakingly matched the VST to his Jupiter with awesome results!

@@noiretblancvie-afterhours well I have the Arturia CS-80 virtual plug in and it is good too. I use VSTis to mimic instruments I could/would never be able to buy. Having said that, a digital VST never sounds like analogue synths from decades ago. Regardless of the skills of the programmers, it can’t be matched. And having said that, once the synth sound is buried in the mix of the piece, these differences seem to disappear. Love the TAL stuff too. Just wished they would upgrade or complete the TAL-sampler manual. Sorry, getting off topic.

I happened to have an inheritance last year, and a Roland JP8 showed up reasonably locally, at an only slightly ridiculous price, so I convinced myself to snag it. However, part of my brain was justifying the purchase because it would only go up in price. It sits proudly as a feature in my studio. Is it still the most beautiful synth I've ever seen and laid my hands on? Yes. Does it have the wonderfully analog oscillator and filter sound? Yes. Have I used it extensively on every song I've done in the last year? No. As a matter of fact, I've reached for my Korg DW8000 far more often to produce classic sounds I love than the Jupiter 8. And with the announcement of the Oberheim OB-X8, I've decided to sell the Jupiter 8 and get an OB-X8 and a few other choice goodies and pocket the change. Will I miss it? Yes. But more because of what it represents than what it can do for me. I think a Polybrute is a better musical investment. Top 5 synths I will never own: - Korg M1 - I never dug the sound - Yamaha CS80 - all the same reasons, but I did have a Deckard's Dream and sold it in favour of the Hydrasynth - Any Older Moog - The Grandmother, Matriarch or Sub 37 would give me all the Moog goodness I desire. - Korg MS20 - The sounds never really did it for me - Yamaha DX1 - I would love one as much as I wanted the JP8. But price and inconvenience will prevent me. Perhaps I'll replace my DX7 with a DX5. Lastly, I have a PolyEvolver and PE Rack. I recommend you keep your eyes out and grab yourself one. Such a cool beast of a synth.

Arturia softsynths could help salve the wounds of some of these missing synths in our lives. They need to emulate some classic Waldorf synths. The new CS80V does sound pretty sweet. You do need a good controller, for you, that has the feel you want for these things tho. I’ve settled on Lumatone for their awesome feeling poly aftertouch as well as the 280 keys. It’s expensive, but well constructed!

I appreciate your healthy dose of rationalism and the vintage market is crazy. There is no right or wrong here. However, if I may provide an alternative observation. I am a lucky owner of a vintage Jupiter 8 and a vintage Model D - I gotta say there is irreplaceable magic in both of these units. To my ears, the Model D is still the greatest synth ever made. Its filter and phatness are unlike anything else. Moog described it as: "Being able to hear the electrons pass through the circuits" and that is exactly what it sounds like. It is alive in a way that is hard to put in words. But just like a Stradavarius - it all comes down to who uses it and how skilled they are. Another decadent aspect to consider is that these units each form a unique character over time. I ultra-deep-sampled two different Juno 60s and their oscillators and filters each sound pretty different. (Cheers, Troels).

I don't have a craving for old synths. However, I'm close to not getting a Prophet 08 REV2 (ever), because of it's price increases (It was a bit too expensive for me before the increase), and it may also be discontinued soon. Other ones I want, but would never buy include: - Arturia PolyBrute - Moog Matriarch - All those Roland flagships that need "the cloud thing" to work - Access Virus Ti2 (I dreamt of this synth 10 or so years ago .. and I still want it)

Yamaha Cs80, Waldorf Wave, Mini Moog and Prophet VS. 4/5 of my favorite synths that I NEVER would or could buy is here. 😎 Currently considering saving up for either the Waldorf Microwave XTK (for that 90's grit and the looks alone) or the new 3rd wave by Groove Music (nails the PPG sound), or a Waldorf Iridium Keyboard (all those tasty features). That's a great list! Here are my thoughts: grab a Yamaha CS-50 or CS-60 before the prices go too crazy. Having played them all (and owning a 50), they all have the same tone and the "lesser" versions will get you 80% of the CS-80's experience, trust me! It's still my favourite synth after many years. Also, the Jupiter-4 is absolutely amazing and goes for so much less than the Jupiter-8. That thing sounds "alive" - hard to put into words especially for a french guy like me! Act quick before it's too late!!

The MKS80 and one of the Retroktive MPG 8X could get you more than what you could get out of a JP8 imho especially since the MKS80 had revision variants one with a Jupiter 6 style filter ( the best in my opinion) . The Retroaktive programmers are some genius bit of kit . The extra functionality they pack into them is well thought out and makes them much more than simple programmers . Well worth a look anyone using the MKS series of Roland synths . Cheers

If someone wants an affordable taste of a CS80, you can always check out the Yamaha SK series. They have the same filter as the CS, but are 7-voice paraphonic. They come along with an additive synth section for organ simulation and a strings section, that is pulled off the poly synth section. Again, this is just a taste. I traded a used ms20mini for my SK20, and it came with a flight case that I can throw it in, or fit my rev2, tb-03 and tr8s in... So just some info for the shoppers haha EDIT FOR DISCLAIMER: I said 'an affordable TASTE' - Not substitute.

The Prophet VS is one of the only synths that completely blew me away. Once you hear one and start messing with it you will know why but the sound is unmatched in my opinion. I saw and played Jupiter 8, original minimoog, ppg wave 2.3, dx1, arp 2600 and axxe, severan prophets. Most i would say very good but not representative of their price tag. the Prophet VS after only maybe 10 minutes of playing is on my one day must have list. If I can't buy them new as normal people prices, I'm not into it. My 5th choice is, honestly, Mutable Instruments' Plaits. I love the sound of the CS-80 but due to it's price I would never buy it. Software versions can give us the sound but for me I like hardware so I went for the very poor person's CS-80, the Yamaha SK30. It's basically a string synth from the late 70s that has a simple poly synth, an organ and a mono synth, as well as a string sound that's an additional poly synth all as different parts that can be blended together or split. The mono synth is basically a CS-5 with aftertouch instead of sample and hold. Of course it will never be a CS80 but if you like that type of sound and you don't want to shell out for a CS80 or 60 then it's a great alternative and not as heavy to lift (but still at least 50kg so it's never leaving my studio again). It's almost as rare though so if you find one grab it

I passed up a CS80 many years ago for £750 in the early 90's............that was a hell of a mistake! I'd still love a Synclavier II for the raw sound and user interface and also a DK Synergy but finding working models, money and space are an issue. All said and done, I have everything I need (JP6, Arp 2600, Fender Rhodes, Fairlight IIx and Series III and an Eminent 310u among others). Its the results that count, not the gear so if your setup works for you, that's the important thing.

Well, I wouldn't buy ANY vintage synth - the on-going cost of upkeep is likely to be severe 😱 I also love the CS-80. There was a rumour that Yamaha might issue a revamp a few years ago. That seems like a business no-brainer but doesn't seem likely to happen 😢 Will have to wait for Behringer's DS-80 which I doubt will be as good as an enhanced Yamaha one. But at least it will be affordable. Meanwhile, there's Arturia's awesome CS80 V

1) CS-80 But I'm pretty sure the CS-80 is one most synth nerds list of want but would never actually buy. 2) Fairlight CMI while technically a sampler (I know I'm cheating here) it's still iconic and offers a lot with that extra crunch but the 10,000$+ they seem to go for is well above what I would willingly pay for something that has plenty of pretty good emulations out there. 3) Korg Kronos, while I've always had a soft spot for workstation class keyboards between the Nautilus and the price jump second hand Kronos have seen I'll just buy a Nautilus and deal with the feature cut back. (Actually going to be ordering a 61key Nautilus in the next month or two) 4) Moog modular of nearly any kind, while they sound nice and understandably have an important place in synth history, they go for well above what I'm willing to spend on a single piece even if I had infinite money to play with. 5) Of all things a DX7 but this is more down to the fact so many DX7 compatible plugins and even hardware out there even for as cheap as they can be had some times I see no point in shelling out for one this day and age even with the near rock bottom prices they can be had for this day an age. I'll also probably stay away from most mono synths as well as I found out I don't get along with mono keyboard synths very well the hard way when I bought a MS-20 Mini second hand a year or so ago and I hardly touched the thing and recently took it in to a local shop and ate a 200$ loss on what I payed for it. Plus I didn't like the tuning stability issues my MS-20 Mini seemed to have as I couldn't leave it hooked up 24/7 for space reasons plus with the issues with power stability we have in the area I live in that would also have been tempting fate. It took mine upwards of 30 minutes for the tuning to stabilize on it more than once after initial power on for some reason which just made it too much of a hassle to ever want to really use.

Apart from the CS-80, I wouldn't ever buy any of the most commonly recorded Roland synths. That would be the 101, 303, Junos (except Alpha). Just because they are heard to death, very limited, and extremely overpriced, with build quality issues, and good clones and VSTs, and alternatives are available. There's a lot to like in the JX-3P over the Juno, for the price. I'd quite like a Jupiter 6 though. In reality, I'd probably not buy an expensive vintage synth again. I'd buy a Deckard's Dream, Baloran The River, Groove Synthesis Third Wave, Polybrute, Quantum/Iridium Keyboard, Summit, UDO Super-6. Maybe you could quash your Prophet VS doubts by looking into SQ-80s. I've been using that a lot in the Arturia V collection, it stands up next to the VS, and they are relatively undervalued, second-hand.

Overpriced and uninovative. 3. Yamaha. Just not feeling it, booring, cold expensive. 4. Liven 8bit. I have been looking at it since release, but there is just no way I can fork out a whopping 200$ for a synth this year, because both my distributors seems to have misplaced all my earnings to their personal accounts. 5. Microfreak. As an old phreaker, it have always apealed to me, but because they basically just snagged the Plates software, and then went on this smear campagn against Behringer for making the same MIDI keyboard as they did, even if the Crave who have all that stuff had been out for a year at that point. Not to mention that there are 100 broken Arturia synths for sale in my area, and the video showing how to replace a broken pot on those synths is 6 hours long, and ends up with the guy giving up instead of just dropping a new pot in there... Like maybe if they gave me one, but I feel my 2HP Pluck has that nice spirit and warm soul to it.
