Awesome list, for something with a bit of presence that will usually hide but demand attention when he's out is a knife fish! My black ghost is about two years old and lives in my African cichlid tank. He smashes the cichlid pellets that sink to the bottom, is big enough to not be messed with, but not so big that when he's doing night patrols he won't harass your cichlids. Hides in his log during the day unless he smells food, and just beautiful to observe his hypnotic swimming style!
You are right, Clown loaches should be nbr 1. What you missed that I have had off and on since the 1970's are Giant Danios. Great dither fish and no issues at all.
I keep Electric Blue Acara in my mixed Mbuna tank with no issues. People often worry about mixing South American and African cichlids due to water parameters, but IMO that's probably not an issue if you're keeping locally bred rather than wild caught fish.
Another one I think that's unique and can be hit or miss but generally works out for the most part: Blue Lobster/Crayfish. It's a great pop of blue and the african cichlids are generally fast enough to escape any pinching from the crayfish.
Hi currently have Acara, sev, rainbow cichlids. I'm really wanting mbuna but can't have another tank. Would you say it's do able to have the more peaceful mbuna (yellow labs, acei ect) be ok? Providing I balance that diet??
I have some larger Buenos aires tetras (6) about 18 months old or so with 2 mbuna and 2 cory catfish over 2 inches and they all get along fine. It's a 60 gallon 4 foot long. If anything the mbuna see me and fly at each other. Very rarely.
All cichlids can go along with each other, the only thing you need to look for is age of the fish and the aggression level like if convicts and jewel are semi, they can live but if its like a convict and an auratus, then that should be taken into consideration
I love ❤️ how my petricola looked in my African Cichlids tank , I had 6 in my 220 and I got caught them eating the slime coat of my Malawi Hawk and it was dead a week later. I thought 💭 it was odd since I had them a few years and never seen it before and a month later caught them doing it to another fish and pulled them out and gave them to my LFS
Btw, I was planning to get a 75 gallon tank with 5 geophagus tapajos, 1 or 2 severums, and 1 or 2 electric blue acaras. Is there anything else I could put in the tank?

Great video as always guys. If I were to get that school of clown loaches you were talking about, the 6 or 7, being that they do get up there in size what size tank would you say I need if I added them to an African cichlid tank?
Hey Guys, I have a 55 all mbuna tank and was wanting to get a bottom dweller. My problem is the mbuna stay on the bottom too. They rarely get above 6 inches from the bottom. They wont come to the top when I feed, they wait until the food gets close to the bottom before they go after it. Is this normal for mbuna? I find them to be skiddish also.
I tried , that rainbow,convict,eb acara,gold saum, gold garami, Honduran red point and they all got shredded up! I currently have a blood parrot and Salvini that's doing fine, My firemouth is struggling and my Nicaraguan is either a serious bully in some of my tanks or gets his but kicked in another tank so I can't find a good fit for him so I currently have him in a 40g Hexagon by himself.. Finnaly got my hands on a few clown loaches That i thought would do fine in my 55g juvie tank but 2 of them disappeared within 5 hours
I recently set up an mbuna tank. I heard that plecos can live together with mbuna so I dropped my pleco into the mbuna tank. But it seems that mbunas are nipping at the plecos fins and causing considerable damage. So at this point I'm guessing my only option is to take the pleco out. Is there anything I could be doing wrong possibly? Everyone else's plecos seem to be doing fine with african cichlids.
