Want to learn about the top 5 things I love about my air cooled Porsche 911? Well, you've come to the right place!
I'll go ahead and spoil the surprise. There's very little I don't love about my 86 3.2 and really haven't been able to stop driving it since I bought it.
After putting over 1,000 miles on this 86 Porsche 911, I’ve decided that there are really 5 key things I love about my air cooled 3.2 Carrera. I thought I would capture these things on video and share them with you, the viewer, to give you a sense of what the strong points of owning an air cooled Porsche 911.
I will be doing a driving impression video in the very near future, but for the meantime, watch this video and you’ll learn what my short-term ownership of my air cooled Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera revealed as the top 5 things I enjoy the most about the car.
They include:
1. The interior - the interior of this car screams classic 911. From the moment you get in, you know exactly where you are based on the old school 911 smells, the sounds and the overall interior design. Watch the video to get a sense and a feel of what it’s like to sit in the car. You’ll also find out what 3.2 911 interior design element I find the most interesting.
2. The 915 transmission - there’s something so special about the feeling you get when you shift this gearbox. The vintage feel and the intentionality required to operate the 915 puts the 3.2 Carrera squarely in the category of enthusiast driver car. In the video, I’ll share with you where to find a video specific to what it’s like to shift the 915 gearbox.
3. The specific mods that have been done to my Porsche 911. The previous owner dialed in this 3.2 and really did some tasteful things to it including Bilstein sports suspension, 17” aftermarket fuch clones, momo prototipo steering wheel, Tag Heuer rally timers and Coco-Mats. All of these mods come together to give my 3.2 a super personalized feel.
4. The air cooled Porsche enthusiast community - while not unique to just the 3.2, it does seem that the air cooled Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera has a deep and special following. In the video, I’ll talk about why I feel the air cooled porsche enthusiast community stands out in comparison to other automotive brand enthusiast communities.
5. The iconic exterior design of the g series generation of the Porsche 911 - the headlights, the low slung rear end and the lines of the 3.2 all come together to give create what I feel is one of the most beautiful automotive designs of all time.
Please don't forget to subscribe, comment and give a thumbs up!

About My Channel:
Rennthusiast (formerly Bavarian Enthusiast TV) is for the most part a Porsche 911 channel centering on experiencing air cooled Porsches, but will also feature other vintage, analog vehicles I add to the collection. The channel is the result of my deep passion for air cooled Porsches, my interest in the air cooled Porsche community, my obsession with modding, improving, buying and selling cars in general and my desire to put myself out there on RU-vid and share these passions with other enthusiasts.
As I continue to build this channel, I'll be adding more cars to the mix, and will likely branch out beyond the German sports car genre as is the case with this video. Why? Because I LOVE cool collector cars and as my interests morph and change, so will this channel.
As of the date of this video, the collection includes a 1995 Porsche 911 993 Coupe, a 1986 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Coupe, a 2007 Porsche 911 Turbo, a 2000 Toyota Landcruiser and....a 1993 Toyota Landcruiser FZJ80 (no they're not German but they've been bucket list vehicles for me so they're now in the collection).
Please subscribe to my channel.

Another solid video. I believe you mentioned the car doesn't have power steering or brakes. The 4 wheel disc brakes are power assist unless that system was removed from your car which I doubt. The other thing you mentioned is lowered suspension. As far as I know Bilsteins, which I have on my 89, do not lower the car. What lowers the car is re-indexing the torsion bars in the rear and making a simple limit adjustment to the front both of which I had to adjust as the previous owner had gone to low that resulted in wheel well strikes. I also think that 996s have increased in price because pretty much all other vintage Porsches have increased in price and a rising tide, etc. Good to see content like this. Love that Heuer rally timer too!

Thanks for commenting! I don’t doubt you’re right In the points you’re making and what I love about what you’ve shared is that you clarified and corrected some of the info in a positive way instead of torching me 😂 Now that I think about it I’m sure the brakes are power assist but they do have a different feel than others I’ve owned and require more effort. Interesting about the Bilsteins. One thing I am fairly sure of is the car has been lowered from stock and I’m thinking that it must be what he did. Thanks again for commenting and also for watching. 👍🏼

Hello from Nashville! I’ve always wanted a Porsche 911, and, ever since the late ‘90s, when my buddy and I were roasted in his 1996 Mustang, by a Porsche 911, I’ve lusted after one of these cars. I’ll never forget the angry, honking, highly-mechanical noises that emanated from the aft end of that 911 convertible that spanked us that night! I could hear it perfectly because my friend’s Mustang was also a convertible. Nice job on the video. I’m envious of your TWO air/oil-cooled Porsches! You have a new subscriber.

Excellent video - well done and lots of good observations about the car. As you point out with the previous owner of your car, we are stewards of these wonderful machines - both maintaining them and modifying them to make each unique. I keep in touch with the previous owner of my 964, letting him know things I’ve done to carry on what he started. My experience of the Porsche community agrees with yours 100%. I haven’t come across the air cooled Porsche community on Facebook, would you post a link? Especially now that we can’t gather, another digital forum would be welcome.

Just recently saw this video. I too recently bought a low mileage, '87 3.2 Carrera (G1 Targa) with mostly a 930 set up in suspension/brakes. I too find my other Porsche (997.2 TTS) and other collectable cars feeling lonely. The G body cars seem to hit the perfect balance of old 911 feel and modern (aka >200 hp) performance in an agile, light body. I agree with every comment (appears to me the G50 transmission/hydraulic clutch is technically superior then the 915 (which is also great BTW), which is why it was again used in the 964 and your 933) right down to the Cocoa mats. I share your enthusiasm. Hope you feel the same 2 years later.

Will, how would you compare the driving and overall experience of the 3.2 versus the 993? Interesting to hear your thoughts. I have a friend who has had a 993, GT3, GT3 RS and had a 3.2 before all of those. He recently got another 3.2 b/c he says of all the 911s he has had, nothing drives like the 3.2.
@Rennthusiast
@Rennthusiast 4 года назад
Interesting that you ask that question. I just drove my 993 to my office and was thinking through how exactly I want to execute a video that deals with that topic. It's been on my mind for sure because I have had many people ask that. So, I'll be publishing a video that compares and contrasts the 2 cars. That said, to answer your question, I feel like the main difference between the 2 is how much effort and intention is required to drive the 3.2 vs. the 993. The 993 is, without question, technically a better car. With research, innovation and optimization come improvements and as a result, the 993 (being a more modern car) is better in the sense of speed, handling, safety, etc. Nevertheless, it's still raw and very exciting. The 3.2, on the other hand, feels much more analog. It requires more focus, more physically demanding inputs and shifting the 915 is much less forgiving than the G50 gearbox in the 993. The 3.2 feels narrower to drive and the lack of power steering is notable when you drive it directly after driving the 993. At the risk of going on and on, the key answer to your question is that each of these cars brings a ton of fun, but in different ways. I'll drive the 3.2 for a few days, conclude that I like it better than the 993, then put it away on the top of the 4 post lift just to change things up. Then, as soon as I get the 993 warmed up and wind out the gears, I'll change my mind and believe that I like the 993 better. So, stay tuned for the video comparison, and thanks for watching.

Always enjoy your content. Did you mean Horizontal (regarding dash)? I am not getting your perfect vertical dash comment. Regardless, enjoyed the video. I just “hung” with a couple 356 owners (that had gathered in C.R.). They really enjoyed someone that had passion for the brand and interest in their baby. So fun to see the subtle nuances between the model years and the customization that was alive and well in the 50’s and 60’s too. (Mirrors/knock offs/exhaust and yes mats...lol). I agree that the exterior of the G body is sweet spot on 911 aesthetically. I prefer your NO whale tale engine cover, but am a sucker for a duck tail. I think I would add a ducktail and the Porsche Classic blue tooth if I dive into vintage. A little more discussion on the G50 transmission (on feel) would be appreciated. I really did NOT like the ‘83 I drove. I found the pedal position in combination with the linkage to be a deal-breaker. I learned to drive on a manual and that ‘83 box just sucked on the Targa I drove. I know there can be a tremendous difference in shift action based on transmission and clutch. VERY interested in hearing more about G50 box specifics on “feel/driveability” over previous tranny. The footwell on these 911’s (clutch position) would take me a while to get used to. Does 993 have same footwell or did they “fix that”?
@Rennthusiast
@Rennthusiast 3 года назад
1. When I say vertical I mean it has no slope to it like modern center stacks. It faces the driver straight on but yes, I can see why that description may not make sense. 2. Yes the pedal orientation on the 993 is similar to earlier air cooled Porsches. The pedals feel offset at first but you get used to it then it begins to feel natural.

I have always liked the body style of the coupes and see that they sell for lots of money. I do my own work on all my cars and whenever I get a car I get very familiar with it. lots of reading and lots of videos on how to. so my question is is a 1980 911 sc targa top with 69990 miles worth having or fixing for a profit? when the car is 25k? with lots of xtra parts. has a 3.0 already fixed with a 915 tranny. but it needs to be put together . it is all original and is petrol blue with black interior 1 owner? thank you for taking the time and appreciate your input.

Thanks for watching and glad you like the channel! Pls subscribe if you haven’t already. If you’re looking for a coupe, you’re probably in relatively clean 911 SC territory with that price. Here’s a good resource to learn about them: www.porscheclubgb.com/regions-registers/registers/classic/911-sc/porsche-911-sc-buyers-guide Read that info carefully. I believe there’s something in there about common repairs and preventative maintenance you really need to make sure have been done on any SC you’re looking at. As I recall, you’ll want the head studs to have been replaced. Also, it should have gotten upgraded Carrera chain tensioners I think but you’ll have to verify that with research as it’s been a little while since I’ve read up on that. Pelican classifieds is a good place to keep an eye on for clean cars, as is the PCA classifieds. I keep both bookmarked on my phone as I continually watch both sites to monitor market activity and to tempt myself if I see a cool car come up for sale 😂 Pelican: forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-sale/ PCA: www.pca.org/browse-the-mart-classified-ads Finally, winter is a better time to get a good price. As spring approaches, prices will likely go up some. Good luck in your search. You can’t go wrong with an air cooled 911. You’ll love it.

Sounds like somebody (not saying it’s you or anything) is a little angry they can’t pull the trigger and buy what they want. Look into a boxster. Might be a better fit for your price point?

@@Rennthusiast I won't lie. You are 100% correct and that's my conflict. My hobbies are cars, watch collecting and finance. That last one always creates conflict between the first two and tries to differentiate between passion and common sense. They are the worst hobbies to have together. On one hand, studying finance all my life allowed me to retire in my early 50's and be able to buy a vintage 911 outright (if I could) without hurting my overall financial wellness. Plus, I already own two now one being a second year 928. I almost envy those that can, without batting an eye to the financial side, pull the trigger and pay $50k plus for a 70's - 80's 170K miles 911SC. I mean 20 years ago, no one wanted these old AC cars. Is it the pandemic toilet paper effect all over again?

For me it’s simple. I can either live my life in a way that I deprive myself of things I want or I can (responsibly) give myself the things I want. I have had friends die at an early age who never really did what they truly wanted. If I end up checking out early I want to be able to look back and know I squeezed the juice out.

@@Rennthusiast Yes but $50k for a 42 year old Beetle with 40 more HP and bad synchro's? LOL! That's what my muscle car buddy keeps telling me. Not sure how old you are but you look a bit younger than 55. I'm now 55 and the other thing you mentioned about dying and never realizing your dreams i.e. getting what you wanted I also believe from a practical view is also a bit of a misconception. In the end, like money, what will it truly matter because you can't take your experiences with you either and regret wont be a thought either.

Hi, nice video, thank you. I also have a red 3.2 and am very happy with it. Nice that you have converted the headlights to the European version. It is indeed much better. Maybe you should also take a European rear bumper. I also think it is nicer. They were of course designed in Europe. ;-)

Thanks for the tip and for watching! I just got home from a 100 mile "quick trip" in my 3.2. Love this car!
