This was one of your best videos. I have been collecting comics since 1973. I have 26K comics. I have one room in my house and a storage unit. When I was younger, I went to at least 4 major comic conventions per year. Now I am handi-capped, and my scooter is not a great way to get around in the crowds. I enjoy watching your videos, even the sales. I get to see alot of cool comics, even though I cant afford to buy. Thank you for what you do, I really appreciate it.
The best thing since I got back into collecting is the vast amount of things to discover. I know since I came back into the hobby I have become a cover collector. So many beautiful covers. The worst part is the amount of space my comics take up.
The best things for me personally, are the deals you offer week after week on your claim sales and the community. The worst part is that all my LCS’s can’t compare, so now RU-vid is my main comic buying platform.
With this hobby, you can literally hold history in your hands. Opening a comic book where you can smell the old newsprint and feel the grit of the paper in your hands. It's like opening a time capsule and stepping into another era. It's a truly magical thing when you find a story and art that really resonates with you on a deeply profound and personal level. (Dan Jurgens' work has always been my personal favorite since I was a kid.) This is truly the greatest medium in the world. There's nothing else like it.
I tell my non collector friends this all the time. The smell of the book, the dialogue, and even the adds make you feel you are back in time in a different era. Simpler times. Enjoying quality entertainment after taking some change to the dime store to get the new issue that just came out.
@@Deadeyecomics gettin' parked beside the spinner rack at the grocery store. Because Mom knows you'll sit there and be occupied and entertained while she got the shopping done... And the hook? "If you're good today, you can get comics!" Some pretty sweet memories.
@@ryanstoick601 That worked for me for a bit until she realized it was cheaper for me to walk with her and get cereal and Doritos than get comic books at the spinner.
Cinema is a similar art form, in that it's a visual medium, and also narrative-driven. Consider how often popular comics are adapted to movies, and how often popular movies are given comic / graphic-novel adaptations.
@@wylierichardson-tu6zs also, both are collaborative mediums. It's a wonderful thing to see a group of creative people working together to bring a singular vision to life. Although, in comics you can get the rare gem of an entire story by one individual. Will Eisner, Robert Crumb, Frank Miller, Jeff Smith... Some truly wonderful art comes from both ways.
I think the best thing when it comes to comic collecting is simply just how many different directions you can go in choosing what to collect. You can collect your favorite character/s, your favorite artists and writers, you can collect books that are part of major events, books that are part of a particular series, graded books, key issues, first appearances, etc. This variety of things to collect added with the variety of ways to collect make it so that no two collections are the same.
The best thing for me right now is completing childhood runs. Right now I am trying to finish Batman 400-500 from when I was a kid. Had most of the issues already but I am in the process of tracking the final 10-12 issues of it down. A lot of good memories and fun!
The nostalgia is what got me back into the hobby. Being able to buy a pristine slab of one of my childhood books and having it next to my childhood copy feels amazing
I think something that’s great is the large community. I work at a comic book store and it’s so fun to be around people who like what you like. Something that sucks though is getting into it now just because so much greatness came out before and it can be hard to find and finish older runs
The best thing for me is the thrill of the hunt. That on any given day you could come across a book that you never thought you would hold in your hands. That is truly exciting!
The best thing about the hobby is the feeling of holding a great book. The worst is a tie between the money you have to spend and the room it takes up to store your issues
The best thing for me is that there's always a new artist or book to discover. I find something cool I've never seen before every time I dig through a bin, and I love it
The best thing for me is that it's something I can share with my kids and pass along some day to another generation. I inherited comics from my dad and one day I'll be able to do the same for my son.
The best thing about comics is the community. Reading books with good art, stories, characters, and talking with others about it. Getting into debates about the minutiae of things. Nerd stuff. The worst thing about comics are people who don’t understand that culture and just want to manipulate it for social agenda or suckering folks out of their money.
I like that its a timeless hobby. I collected 30 years ago and just started again. Same great feeling getting a new book you were hunting for. Thanks for the great channel and content.
Best thing for me is the feeling of pride I get from cleaning and pressing an old book. Doesn't hurt that it helps from an investment point of view as well! 😊
the raddest thing for me in the game is grabbing up my old issues that made me fall in love with comics in the first place.... that I trashed when I was a kid. Worth it.
My favourite things are the history this all ties to, the short, enjoyable stories encapsulated in so few pages, and the medium as a story telling machine via both words and art is unmatched.
For met one of the best things is the passion and wonder, I’m still new to collecting started almost a year ago and I love going through bins filled with books finding things I don’t have and questioning myself “what’s this” or “I wonder what this is about”. Also a big art guy so I love seeing different variants and versions of covers
The community is the best thing. I always felt like a geek for liking to read/collect comics, but the community has shown that there are many, many people out there that enjoy the hobby as much as I.
One of my favorite things about the hobby is the ability to find a new favorite artist or storyline when hunting. Giving a book a chance and then finding out how great it is in the writing or the artwork of an artist thats either been around or new on the scene.
i have learned a lot more about collecting. When I first started I was obsessed with aquiring every issue. For instance, I had a lot of the wolverine collection 1 through 100 of series 2 along with hulk 180 and 181. I also had Spawn 1 through 90 with various other books that were mostly number 1s etc. I lost that collection during hurricane Katrina and stopped until I became wheel chair bound and got back into the hobby. Since then Ive learned about keys, DC rare prints and limited covers. Most of this I have learned from watching your channel, so ty for the great content and I look forward to more.
The great thing about comic books is that it’s a medium where you can do just about anything. Storytelling and artistry come together in this beautiful bizarre nebula of imagination and wonder. It’s my favorite form of entertainment. I do hope we can find a way to get generations younger than us captivated by it just as we were. Cheers
The community is a big positive to me. The onslaught of variants is starting to remind me a bit of the late 90s (which made me drop the hobby back then). Let's not repeat history!
Great content! So many things I could mention! One thing I enjoy about collecting comics is the value and preservation of graded comics. On the other hand, I think it's very unfortunate that now those comics cannot be read and the art inside cannot be appreciated if preserved that way. Very kind of you to do these giveaways for the community by the way!
Being out of the collecting for over 20 years it's amazing to finally going thru your long and short boxes and finding those super surprises of books that have accumulated value over time. Going into the hobby for enjoyment and for investment of..."maybe this will be worth something in the future" decades ago and revisiting it now....is like going back in time and finding that enjoyment again!! DC universe variant logos, newsies, crossing your fingers when you see a big boi book for great condition........NOICE! So happy to be part of such a great community of people. Love your comic channel the Best MintHunter!!!
I think the mark of a truly excellent content creator is someone who can have me interested in a hobby I never indulged in. I've never bought a comic other than to read it and, in one case, frame it on my wall. But James always garners my interest when he puts new video up.
One good thing is that there will always be something new to see, whether you find a new favorite writer, artist, new cover, or meeting new people. At the end of the day, as long as you had fun, everything else is a bonus 👍
A great thing about this hobby for me is the RU-vid community - I’ve learnt so much since I’ve got back into the hobby about everything from grading to investing from content creators ( and passionate collectors ) like yourself 👍
I just got back into the hobby about 5 years ago. I just began watching comic videos on RU-vid about a year or more ago and discovered this channel. Its been my favorite by far and has really helped me in identifying the smaller keys in dollar bins at pawn shops and was regularly pulling out 15 and 20 dollar books. Thanks James!
Great list bro! I would say that an additional good one is how the community comes together to support one another. I see videos all the time about a need that arises and how much people came together to help out. Seeing all of the AOKs are great too. On the bad side of things-people really need to accept the fact that there is no one way to collect! Just because they don’t prefer to collect this that or the other doesn’t mean that it’s not ok for someone who chooses to go that route! If everyone collected the same way, how boring would that be!
My favorite thing about this hobby is when the market is down, u can tell who the real collectors are in down times. I also love filling runs, digging through a long box that smells like a musty basement and finding an old Hot Stuff comic (don’t judge me lol), and grabbing a graded grail that is slightly out of my budget for a good price. Don’t yuck someone else’s yum and collect what u like and you’ll never lose
Your comment about hiding your love of comics as a child resonated with me strongly. Growing up as a person of colour in the ‘80s (and my older siblings who grew up in the ‘70s) - it was very common to hear from people that “black people don’t read comics”. From fellow children and adults alike. The absurdity of such presumptions drum up memories that are surprisingly bittersweet. Furthermore, finding comics with heroes who looked like myself back then proved to be a significant challenge. Luckily, one or two LCS took surprising interest on the topic and made efforts to stock some characters of interest. It was a very interesting, engaging, awkward and transformative process for my siblings and I to have to - for the most part - educate and inform adults who were supposed to be highly knowledgeable about comic book history and the comic book world at large. But that’s how it starts - a willingness from both sides to sit down and have frank, honest and factual conversation. It never stopped us from pursuing any of our interests, but I was fortunate to have found a small circle of friends who’s passions transcended the boundaries of race and class. I left the hobby for many years but got back into it a year or two ago - only because while going through and organizing my storage I stumbled upon my childhood collection. I forgot how many I had! I was also surprised to frequent those same LCS that I engaged with as a kid where the proprietors recognized me and recalled me by name and had recited my run lists from memory after decades of not visiting! So my siblings and I frequent them once more, and continue to support them to this day!
I enjoy the books and the good information you share. It was 32yrs since I was into collecting comics. And this month marks a year since getting back into it and making some AWESOME friends. Thank you very much. 👍😁👍
Good stuff man, agree, we have a good community. I guess the best annoying thing for me is the "good ole boys" at cons where the dealers and artists, etc. often (certainly not all) are in it to make each other money and the fans get squeezed out and end up being the source of the inflated signed copies, or whatever. There are stories but too long for comments. Hope you have a great man
My personal choice for good and bad is actually the same thing... Age, I've been reading, collecting and buying comic books for almost 60 years now, and one day I won't. I'm not an invest person, when I'm gone there's going to be a pretty happy charity shop. I'm just sad that I'm going to miss the end of a good story arc,😢 if I get to 73, I will have least finished the Colour version of the Walking Dead, that's my goal!😇 (I didn't get into the black and white until the #1 was a thousand pounds or something crazy like that, so I never bothered!) Two selfish things I know, but I don't worry about grails or first appearances, if I have them that's good, but if I don't that's okay to!
As someone who’s going to college and has a part time job the one thing that sucks about the hobby is how expensive it is for a young collector. I have a pull list at my LCS but it’s only 3 titles which is like paying for a Netflix subscription. When it comes to buying key issues for my PC, I find it difficult to pay the prices that older collectors are willing to pay.
What's great about this hobby is there seems to be a limitless amount of information to discover - puts you on a continual learning cycle. Very cool. What's not so great - vultures ready to pounce on momentary lapses of that knowledge. Buyers and sellers need to be transparent when it comes to transactions.
On the good side: the joy of the hunt and finding something that you've been searching for, even if it's not necessarily valuable. On the bad side: Seller's remorse. I sold so many great books about 20-25 years ago, thinking I needed to. I sure wish I still had them.
Great video. Definitely love the community. I wish I had made it to the back deck comic fest. One thing I hate is the cost of supplies. Boards, bags, top loaders, etc.
As a brand new collector of comics, the thing I like the most is the sheer quantity of the number of comics to collect and/or read. I am a long time record collector, but I find it easier to enjoy more of a variety of comics and their art rather than specific music genres/artists.
Great video James. My books arrived today from your Batman claim sale and they look great. Thank you very much sir and looking forward to the next one!
For me the best part of the hobby is having a library of backstories for family and friends that might be curious to learn more about the characters and the industry overall.
I collected comics in the 80's for like 5 years. Then collected GI Joe in the early 2000's (lol). I started collecting again 2 years ago and this time I collect keys only for characters I like. I also like the grading aspect by CGC. I think it's great to have books graded because eventually I will sell my small collection and whether it's me selling it or my children, my books will have been graded professionally and there won't be much arguing about grade and value. We didn't have a grading service back in the mid 80's when I started. The Internet has enhanced collecting for me exponentially! It's great time to be a collector!
I think the negative for me is that a very big part of the market is speculators and dealers playing hot potato with rumoured books causing unjustified price inflation. It prices so many collectors out of the market for books they would really want.
I love all your videos. You help me with Marc hobby and make me knowledgeable what I don’t know, but I never wear anything but I love your videos and I love your knowledge and your love for the Hardy you are awesome.
Best thing is having the ability to get books I had as a kid. All those back issues my Mom threw out would be impossible to collect without the internet. Worst thing is spec and scammers everywhere. Have to be very careful. Great video as always.
This was a fun list to watch play out. I think one of the best things about this hobby is that everyone is different and u can collect/read what u like and ignore the noise from speculators and investors.
Best thing, having a chance now on collecting what I didn’t when I was a kid… not so good, the current woke and activist superhero tampering market/writers messing up our childhood superheroes… Thanks for another great video James
Thanks to watching you I've turned my reading hobby into collecting, I got secret wars #8 for my birthday and I've been picking up little keys here or there since.
all great points. i want to add that this hobby is supposed to be fun. if you feel overwhelmed, take a step back and take a deep breath. comics will still be here after you take a break.
I recently started collecting/reading again this past year and it’s by far the most rewarding/fun hobby I currently have. I’m always looking forward to my biweekly trips to my LCS.
GREAT Content as usual Jimmy Boy ..... GREAT to see your Journey from the hirricane to job loss to turning ot around to your Business Model and selling at the Antique Store. AWESOME.
Best thing for me is my local shop…they’re the best and my safe space. Also the community in general and channels like yours James. It’s inspired me to start my own channel (Madmage-Collector if you’re ever curious 😊)…I’m a humble little channel and it’s been a fun experience so far. Thanks for what you do!
Ok, I'll give a great: treasure hunting! Searching through bins, exploring shops, visiting garage sales, checking local ads, browsing eBay, even traveling to new places, there are so many potential treasures, that is comics, out there just waiting to be found by collectors! There's nothing like going out and simply searching... hunting...for comic books!
Best thing is having so much knowledge available and the access to different sites to be able to search and purchase these. Down side is over priced comics and so called dealers selling At ridiculous prices. I live in UK and our prices are 10/20% higher than in the US. I do buy from US too
For something on the ups is getting people into the hobby! I just got my girlfriend into it through the Night Terrors stories that are coming out right now and all she wants to do is find comic shops, go through back issues and find a horror story or something that peaks her interest.
Good list James! And I'm not just saying because we have the same name either... A great thing about this hobby is kind of like movies / TV shows - there should be something really for everyone as far as taste / preference. The variety of comics and the variety of collectors that collect them, is very deep and wide.
My one great thing is the art. Even though two of my favorite artists died too soon (Darwyn Cooke and John Paul Leon), the pencilling and inking and coloring of modern art are amazing. Some artists I like are Darick Robertson (pencilling & inking), Diego Rodriguez (coloring), Dave Stewart (coloring), Michael Allred (pencilling and inking), Laura Allred (coloring), Brad Anderson (coloring), Gary Frank (pencilling & inking), Jamie McKelvie (pencilling, inking, and coloring), Ron Garney (pencilling and inking), Bruno Redondo (pencilling and inking), and Adriano Lucas (coloring).
For me personally, I’ve found a lot more joy out of collecting runs rather than investing in keys. Runs I’m currently working on include the Defenders, Amazing Spider-Man, Marvel Team-Up, Marvel Two In One etc
For me the best thing about the hobby is the artwork! It's such a great release after a rough night at work to come home and look at such great artwork! I'm a cover collector and it's a great stress relief to look at them all.
What’s great is that you have so much choice in collecting. You can collect keys, first appearances, Classic covers, runs, gorilla covers, good girl, certain characters, rare obscurities, slabbed, raw, variants, 9.8s, mid grade, low grade, moderns, stuff you just like, you name it! The bad is that sometimes other collectors hate because you don’t collect what they think you should and that your collection should look like the top 40 or full of expensive silver age first appearances or you’re not a real collector. This is an egalitarian hobby with room for all types of collectors
One of the best things about collecting comics is that it’s fairly easy to make the hobby fund itself. With some knowledge and research it’s easy to flip books to make money and spend that on the ones you’re chasing
Probably the worst thing for me is the time that I lost based on being a female and feeling unwelcome in a lot of nerdier hobbies. I remember being in school and I commented on another kid's Star Wars toy and was told I couldn't like it since I was a girl. It just seemed like I was always judged harsher for my interests than my brother and pushed in different directions. It genuinely feels so good to know that little girls today will never have to go through what I had to, so at least that is a positive to look forward to 😊
I know the feeling. The first 5 comic book shops I went into made me feel as if I was a stranger in an unwelcomed land. Otherwise I'd have been into them right around 1992. I didn't get into them until about 8 years later and have been in them ever since. Embrace what you love in life! You only get one time around this ball of dirt, so may as well enjoy yourself while you're here.
@@thepickle2535 absolutely! I stopped caring about that a long time ago and have more than made up for lost time. I had a DC comics encyclopedia as a kid and I read that thing to death. I loved learning about the world and characters, but actually reading the comics felt so out of reach for some reason.
