I love this format, you guys are being very consistent with your roles. For the most part, I come to your channel for tips/advice/tutorials. I go to Film Riot, Corridor Digital, and Linus Tech Tips for Education/Entertainment. Please continue keeping your episodes short, to the point, and informative. While the humor is minimal in your episodes, I think it is for the best... again, here for info not entertainment. I appreciate you guys finding a lane and sticking to it. @FXhome

+Doctor Vitas as with any filmmaking topic, you could write an entire book on it. :) We've covered the essentials here - if you understand these rules, you'll be able to create coherent dialogue scenes which the audience will be able to follow. Going from there to the cafe scene in Heat between Pacino and De Niro requires a lot of work and finessing of technique. Similarly, creating technically correct images is the first step, but it doesn't mean you're immediately an Oscar-worthy cinematographer.

Great tips! What about recording sound when shoting a dialog. Is lav mic good (hiden from the camera), or is better to use shotgun mic?
@FXhome
@FXhome 8 лет назад
+AV films it will depend on the specifics of the scene and, of course, on the equipment you have. A lot of the time having a boom mic above the actors is best, but that might not be possible depending on your camera angle. In practise you'll be switching technique frequently depending on the setup of the scene. And, of course, some dialogue might have to be done in ADR, if conditions on set are unfavorable (eg too much background noise).
@avfilms2036
@avfilms2036 8 лет назад
+HitFilm Oh, thanks! Currently my budget is 0 haha. I've just ordered my first lav mic (Aputure A.lav), because I need to shot an interview or let's say more of an promo, but I don't have any good microhone. Hope a little lavaliere will save my ass :) Thanks again and keep up the great work! It's very helpful.

This was really great, Just dled your software and subscribed and didn't expect film making tips. I have one script for a short film mainly involving dialogue and the cinematography will be very important. You gave nice tips and summed up the basics nicely. I'd like to add that you CAN break the 180 degree rule IF you move between the two characters with the camera to get another angle. Ever since I learned about the rule I've seen it practiced in almost every single film, only broken by what I just mentioned. It's really neat knowing these ins and outs you never knew before.

How do you get that blurry shoulder effect on the over the shoulder shot? Just change focus? Or lense? I'm new to film so any help would be great :)
@FXhome
@FXhome 7 лет назад
That shallow depth of field is created by the camera settings. Open up the aperture as wide as you can (small numbers are wider), And avoid wide angle lenses. If your camera has a zoom lens, then it will help to zoom all the way in, and get as far away as necessary to frame the shot.
@kathy9250
@kathy9250 7 лет назад
HitFilm thank you :) I have a zoom lens and I have to get so far away to make a good shot it's ridiculous :(
@FXhome
@FXhome 7 лет назад
That's why they build movie sets with walls that move, so they can get the camera farther away. Your other option is to switch to a lens with a larger aperture.
@kathy9250
@kathy9250 7 лет назад
HitFilm I think I'll just save up a bit and get a new camera then. :) Is the blur effect the same with depth of field or different then the zoom lense one?
@FXhome
@FXhome 7 лет назад
Depth of field is the term for the range of the scene from the closest point that is in focus to the farthest point that is in focus. It is controlled by your lens's focal length and aperture. Usually video camera lenses, which are too small to have a really large aperture, will only be able to achieve shallow depth of field by getting far away and zooming way in. (small aperture, long focal length). If you get a lens with a larger aperture, then you can get closer and retain the same shallow depth of field.

here is a question not covered in these tutorials. How long do you do each take per angle? If I have 10 pages. Do I do the whole ten pages in wide shot... then the whole ten pages for ever other shots or do I get selective according to my story boards. isn't that considered editing in camera which is a no-no?
@patrickdaitya7084
@patrickdaitya7084 7 лет назад
I don't think you would know until you try it out. Or story boards. Yah.
@jacobvarney23
@jacobvarney23 3 года назад
It depends on how long you want the shot to last. People usually don't shoot an intense closeup for an entire scene. Editing in camera is fine, so long as you're certain you know you won't be missing anything.

Very nice tips. Do you typically have to do the same scene over and over for each camera move or can you film just each actor's line while that actor is talking and then move the camera to film the other actor? What is the best way?
@FXhome
@FXhome 5 лет назад
It's better to film the whole conversation from one side, then move the camera and do it again. Filming it line-by-line won't feel natural for the actors. - Javert (FXhome Staff)

I have a question, when I shoot a dialogue scene with two people, do I have to move my lights and the camers I use everytime when the other person speaks, so when they interact? Or can / should I record the complete speach of one person at once and then go to the other? Thanks!
@FXhome
@FXhome Год назад
I'd suggest recording the conversation entirely from one side, then move all the equipment and have them do it again while recording from the other side.
@georgerady9706
@georgerady9706 5 месяцев назад
Of course it helps if you have ACTORS who know how to SPEAK!!! I swear, the whole discipline of Theatrical diction seems to have been washed away by “methody” acting teachers who can’t stage-speak themselves and think it’s a “reality” virtue and not just lazy incompetence! Pace, Character, Clarity so clean that you can mess with it and still be understood! And - most of all - know what you are TALKING about within the context of the story, the character and the moment of the scene! Then the cinematographer merely has to shoot the voice and reactions and the audio guy needs only to get clean sounds… the rest can be done in post.

Hi HitFilm! I really enjoy your videos. I need help. I have to do a film with my whole class, we decided it will be a criminal film and will shoot mostly outside. We have two good DSLRs but non of us has a microphone. What do you you think we should do? Can we get a good aoudio from a smartphone or the dsrls or we need to buy a microphone? Its just for one film and i want to hear your opinion. If possible give me some ideas for cheap microphones that might do the job. Thanks in advance keep up with the good videos! :)
@FXhome
@FXhome 8 лет назад
+kamen traikov Much as we would like to say that you can get good audio from a smartphone or the DSLR's, (which may be true if you were inside), you are likely to just hear noise and wind when shooting outside. As having bad audio is one of the things that immediately makes films look 'amateur', we would recommend investing in a really good mic. We personally use a rode mic which is about £50 and does a wonderful job. If you'd like some more suggestions, do consider posting on the forums where we have thousands of filmmakers who would be able to help! Best thing to do in the meantime is do a test run - take the equipment you have at the moment outside and do a bit of filming to see what quality you get. Thanks for the question!
