FUN FACT: Square Enix is now banning users from their forums for using the word "Teef" when referring to that game. I am honestly, absolutely, NOT joking about this.
They were actually doing that even before the game was released, going on about a year and a half. Even the TTLG Forums instated a temporary ban on 'Teef'. The rationale being that it was 'racist', or some such nonsense. It's not our fault Square shopped out the Thief franchise away from America for some Canadian tax breaks, and wound up with a development team who not only didn't respect - but _couldn't _*_pronounce_* - THIEF.
Another fun fact about The Evil Within: It's a "next-gen" Sub-HD game. Glorious 1600x640 on Xbox One. Would it have killed Sony or Microsoft to hear 3rd parties say "we want x86 architecture!" and say back "No, you want something easy to program for." That is pretty much the only bonus to be had.. x86 is old as the hills and is generally NOT used in dedicated gaming consoles for a reason. The architecture is about as efficient as eating a box of rice krispies... one at a fucking time...
I just don't understand Teef's defenders. I get called a perfectionist whiner by them just for pointing out that it's clearly flawed even if you put all memory of even Deadly Shadows out of your head. About the best I can say for the game is that it had pretty environments, even if the color palette was drab. As for the rest...
"Aiming with the right stick that has more sensitivity issues than a social justice blogger." That one scored a critical hit in the progress of making me croak from laughter.
IDK what to tell you. But in a year of despicable turds, at least there were a few gems in the mix. Hopefully this year we see real next-gen titles. I have my PS4 ready.
Ah AC Unity, more bugs and glitches to rival Skyrim, framerate issues, game breaking bugs, and 99 butt fucking dollar micro transactions. One of the worst Ubisoft has ever made.
The difference is that DmC: Devil May Cry somewhat resembles the original series in its gameplay. It's not as in-depth, but it allows you to pull off the same moves with better controls and an INFITINTELY-better camera. Thi4f is so painfully linear and grotesquely unrecognizable compared to the old Thief games. People complained about "how far Thief 3 strayed from the original games", but Thi4f is so botched and lukewarm, it renders those complaints into nothing.
This was quite glorious. Can't disagree with any of those, my biggest additions would be Destiny and Shadow of Mordor, though they're probably slightly higher "quality" than these.
TheFrostsabre tbh with you its just one of the less worse games of the year, not one of the best, in fact there are no best games of this year, all the top 10 best games of 2014 should change the name to top 10 less worse games of 2014
LatinoBadass PLenty of good games this year. Divinity: Original Sin. Smash Brothers Wii U. Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze. Hyrule Warriors. Shovel Knight. Dragonfall. Mario Kart 8. This is just to name a few.
***** Oh yeah I remember the nemesis system and the upgrade tree in AC2. Oh and remember that time we went to Mordor in AC2? And you were able to ride creatures and use special skills which you levelled up? Fucking dumbass
I didn't dislike The Evil Within, I didn't have much expectations given the general direction the RE franchise is going for. If anything, and for what it's worth, I think that The Evil Within was a better Resident Evil that what we've been getting since the RE4. Which isn't much if you compare it to the it's predecessors.
Keep your hip waders handy because this is gonna keep happening much larger than before. The video game industry may be reduced heavily by the mid 2020s to late 2020s.
The fact that although I disagree with a lot of your videos, I find myself entertained with most of them. Great content razor fist you got my subscription.
I just found this channel and I am infatuated with Rageaholic's writing style as well as his performances in front of the camera. It is all quite impressive. Subbed, and I can't wait to look through his back catalog.
Teef deserves the scorn you so liberally pour on it. I remembered playing Thief Gold years ago, and enjoying the thrill of it. No such thrill in Teef. Nicer graphics do not make up for tedious game play and dumb Ai. Yesterday I began playing 2004's Thief: Dark Project. Hooked already. Played for hours and hours. Much better.
I always feel like Square spends all their time designing characters, then forgets to spend time designing GAMES. I find this highly ironic, due to the fact that their characters often fail to actually HAVE any character.
Your description of Teef's narrative left out the Thief taker general; possibly the worst, most cliche-ridden game villain of all time. God, that story was so bad. As for the game itself, I was prepared for it being buggy, unpolished crap. In the end it was just... boring, generic, forgettable and mildly frustrating to play. In a way that's actually worse- it showed the game never had much hope, as it was terrible by design! And the fanboy 'don't treat it as a Thief game' argument. It never fails to amaze me that the Thief fan community seems more willing than most to accept whatever shit comes their way. This game actually has a number of defenders on the Eidos and TTLG forums for Christ's sake- despite the fact that Fan Missions for the old games and the Dark Mod still get released every month, almost all of which exceed Teef in terms of gameplay and faithfulness to the series (and were produced on a budget of zero). It's not as if we're so desperate for more Thief that we should greet shit like this with open arms. We should just give up hope of getting a good AAA Thief game in the foreseeable future; no-one can ever expect to match the MIT geniuses who made Thief: The Dark Project, System Shock and Ultima Underworld.
"And the fanboy 'don't treat it as a Thief game' argument." I've seen this argument pop up time and time again with other gaming abortions like Hitman: Absolution and Splinter Cell Conviction. It never ceases to amaze me how apologists will defend absolutely anything, regardless of how objectively bad the game lives up to any standard let alone its own namesake.
remotefreak147 True, I guess some people like to justify their purchases, or perhaps act edgy by going against the majority opinion. I can kind of understand people enjoying those games, but it's when people tell you they're better than the originals or they're faithful to the old games that really pisses me off.
JCaesar I perfectly understand that- as you've only played one game in the series (often considered the worst one of the three). It's the comparison with Thief Gold and 2 which is the final nail in the coffin for Thief. I'd urge you to play the first two though- they're quite something :)
I agree with everything you said Razorfist EXCEPT.... Final Fantasy 14 is not a financial catastrophe. At least not any more. It's original launch was a fucking disaster. But, it is actually very profitable for Square Enix now. www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-02-05-final-fantasy-14-helps-square-enix-swing-back-to-profit massively.joystiq.com/2014/02/05/final-fantasy-xiv-provides-square-enix-profitable-2013/ venturebeat.com/2014/02/05/final-fantasy-xiv-a-realm-reborn-helps-square-enix-return-to-profitability/ Yes, I know these articles are almost a year old, but the game is actually even more popular and profitable now than it was then. Great video Razorfist. Very funny. :)
VoreTechz1985 That statement is true, and you are welcome to your opinion of it. I quit the game last year because it got stale and I had beat everything to death. I might go back to it when the new expansion drops. There is already a lot of new content apparently. Try it before you bash it. You might like it.
Ian Smith Sadly, you're right. After I agonizingly finished FF13, and tried it's sequels, I have a feeling that they only care about money, not quality and consumers.
FFXIV A Realm Reborn is something people who like to complain about Square Enix hate... Similar to Braverly Default.. (although made by a 3rd party company.. it was based on Final Fantasy 4 Heroes of Light (DS).. which had the Scenario Designer/writer of Final Fantasy IV at it's head.. who also headed a little game called Parasite Eve 1 :D) These are overlooked.. sucess stories since they are not seen as part of the "numbered" series of games.. by many..
Maxiga Big corporations are like dogs, the only thing they understand is money (food) and if you keep rewarding them for bad behavior you can't blame them for continuing to be bad.
The evil within was surprisingly good. I went in with low expectations, but it managed to get better and better as it went on. It has grit and horror ambiance missing from what has become ''survival horror'' these day's with games like resident evil 6 flooding the store shelves.
"Aiming with the right stick that has more sensibility issues than a social justice blogger" I think you have manage to surpass yourself. I need to pause that moment to laught my ass off
Other than the death of a dearly beloved cat at my workplace, Thief was the absolute worst event of 2014. Yahtzee and RazorFist both did well to mark it as the worst game of the year, and for all the right reasons. To give credit where it's due, Eidos Montreal did a superb job with Deus Ex Human Revolution. The Thief developers had all the resources and precedents to Build a great game to satisfy the taffers, but their work hath displeased The Builder, and they were verbally struck down and hammered into the earth by both critics and fans alike.
Between the "Gamers Are Dead" bullshit, the cascade of god awfull games, such as Teef and Final Turd 13: My Girlfriend's Period Returns, and the fact that 2 out of the 3 decent games that came out last year are fucking movie tie-ins, I can honestly say that 2014 was the absolute worst year for gaming since 1982. Good fucking ridance.
The press conference for splatoon was awkward but the game looks hype. As some one who played 10k hours of the quake series, this game looks fast paced and with enough movement options to get some one as jaded in shooter like me excited.
Hmm I dunno. I haven't played TEW yet, but I've heard good things about it from reviewers I really trust. AnalogReviews for example gave it their game of the year award. I guess tastes differ greatly from person to person. Great video though, I really enjoyed it.
i actually really like the evil within, and sadly found alien isolation a bit boring(i really wanted to like it) but great video, i dont watch videos just to hear people agreeing with me and i definitely understand why people found the evil within disappointing, assassins creed is such a shitty series though i did enjoy the pirate one somewhat
Also: Those Evil Within glitches. I played through it twice on the XBOX 360 and didn't encounter anything of the sort, so... am I lucky that I didn't encounter any glitches or what?
Maxiga PC Master Race I guess? I haven't ran into any on PC either, I also died laughing when a few weeks after release they patched in the option to play the game without the stupid letterbox and in 60fps. So much for "artistic choices"
Most of the time I disagree with razorfist on some reviews, for example I liked the new hitman, sure it wasn't the best but I find it enjoyable, I also liked the new Splinter Cell even though I missed the old voice actor I find the game pretty enjoyable if you always play it on Ghost, but Thief.... man I tried to like thief.
I had been watching someone play through Thief 4 and in the end he got sick of it and did an entire rant about all of his problems he was running into and essentially it was completely immersion breaking the stuff he was going on about to the point where it was just incredibly ridiculous seeing how badly the game failed on those levels. Apparently guards all shouting about a thief being there isn't enough to wake a sleeping guard up. Not to mention how ridiculously easy it was to escape the guards. Also have a friend that's in some of my college classes who played it too and said it was the only game he ever wanted to return (he was a fan of the previous Thief games too).
Look sometimes i actually don't agree with razorfist but I always say to myself after every video "without razorfist youtube would suck ass" keep doing what your doing man keep up the good work
Problem with Evil Within was basically that Shinji decided to work with western company, Bethesda. Remember, this is the lovable company known for creating major issues like save corruptions that crash your games (Fallout 3/New vegas) or the major glitchfests that gave birth to the Powdered Toast Dragon (Skyrim)
Bethesda didn't do QA on New Vegas. Obsidian did. fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Quality_assurance Bethesda were, however, responsible for every post-launch patch (see also: The only reason the game is even marginally playable in 2015).
***** that's always been Bethesda's roots. They just leave it to the mod community to fix (while they themselves leave a buggy game on the marketplace) also I find it ironic they trash talked Nintendo about how their specs are weak (bet Myamoto brought up Bugthesda's bad track record on bugs and crashes)
Don't forget about the black dildos on the top and in the bottom of the screen, that were put there to allegedly make the game more cinema-like. Luckily, that shit could be patched on PC.
Can you get Dennis Miller or Dana Carvey doing a Miller impression to narrate your reviews? You write them like Dennis writes his SNL Weekend Update editorials. A complement.
Idk, Evil Within sure as hell had it's fair share of issues, but i'll take 20 copies of a flawed survival horror game over Rehashed Creed, FF13, or a shitty Rambo game, lol.
Funny isn't it how Dishonored got generally critically acclaimed while The Evil Within got relatively lambasted even though both games are far from exemplars of their respected genres. Typical double standards from the mainstream gaming media.
+Hovis Steve Never trust the gaming media...they're more dishonest than car salesmen who just got done taking shots of truth serum. Hell, trying to beat The Evil Within in less than 5 hours for a damn trophy is about as entertaining as standing in line for the yearly rinse and repeat franchise known as COD.
+1sam234 At least MGS 5 made that list because it was after playing it and observation from Razorfist himself that this was indeed same shit different year.
I really like The Evil Within but it is far from being a survival-horror title when you gain a revolver, shotgun, an explosives-launching crossbow, and plenty of ammo/grenades by the 3rd chapter of the game.
Even though 2014 had a lot of crap like *Assassin's Creed: Unity* and disappointments like *Thief*, I still consider last year an awesome one for gaming. Awesome video BTW. Nice concept and execution.
