The thing that bothered me the most about High School Prodigies In Another World is that they decided to have the Politician double as the Military Tactician, those things don't overlap. History shows that Politicians often make the worst military commanders, political victories are not the same as military victories and they are measured by different standards and achieved by different methods. A Politician aiming for a political victory will squander and pass by Tactically superior methods and objectives, and ultimately never achieve a military victory.

I once read a fanfiction in which the author misunderstood how shark mating works in order to force one hot guy and another hot guy in merman shark form to bang, with the characterization/writing skills/everything slowly disintegrating as the story went on. And I'd rather go and reread that then watch the mermaid mess that the card game gods shat out this year.

Admittedly, I enjoyed the Highschool Prodigies anime because when I went into it, I thought it was itself a parody of the OP Isekai genre with intentionally backwards "maintain the real world status quo" aspects to subvert the supposed overpowered/exceptional characters. I didn't realize that it was... actually trying to take itself seriously.

Tsukasa has to be the first character with heterochomia I've ever seen where I think he would look better without it. I love heterochromia but damn that doesn't look good at all.

Another problem with the prodigy anime is a lack of understanding of how society evolves. You can't just transform a nation and culture that has only ever known absolute monarchy into a liberal democracy. The problems arise with the fact there is no evolution of government. Granted, while revolutions are generally throwing out the old and bringing in the new (america), they could only do so because of the social tensions and philosophocal thought to allow it. The american revolution for example came about after a good few centuries of being a colony, Britain was already the most democratic of the European empires (though it was abysmally undemocratic by today's standards) and the Enlightenment provided the critical thought to fuel a desire for change. I don't want to sound like an obnoxious youtube commenter, the "look at me i'm smrt!" kind of guy, I just wanted to point that out as a history buff and politics student. Besides, what really condemns that show is the fact that the political prodigy is apparently wanting to create a better world based on morality, going so far as to trust his former enemies who were saturday morning cartoon villains, when he himself murdered his father.

one thing that bothers me is when a show just needs a small change to drastically improve it, like instead of making the highschool prodigies the good guys make them knowingly install our corrupt political systems explicitly for their own gain, you can have an interesting complex plans within plans for the first half and maybe some dissention among the main character and interpersonal conflict for the second. like heterochromia-kun becoming a dictator and the other need to use their skills to take him out such as: -ninja journalist exposing political corruption and wrongdoing -billionaire could go both ways using his wealth to influence politics for his benefit or remaining a business man while supplying a resistance with funding on the down low -Samurai whamen and engineer wahmen can work with training and technological advancement for a resistance -Medical wahmen can stick with heterochromia guy, she seems the most 1 note, and somebody has to stick with him to be the evil second in command -and kill the kid magician since hes useless at the turning point of the story, at least he would have some use by upping the stakes and maybe a villain kicking puppies effect.

The problem with the Number 1 Anime is really simple. People can't write characters that are truly more intelligent than they themselves are without research into and consultation about what those characters are supposed to be. Research and consultation clearly was not done, and if it was, it wasn't done properly.

I'm about 96% sure that nobody working on high school prodigies did a second of research into what the characters were doing. Like I got an ad for it a couple times on VRV that was just cut from some random scene featuring the doctor restarting someone's heart, and I have CPR training, so I figured she was gonna do something actually useful. Instead, she just... squishes his heart a few times and he's okay, which is obviously not how this works

The reason the High School Prodigy anime is like that is because that's the same foundation that modern Japan is built on: All the same nobles and wealthy individuals who ran the country before the Meiji restoration and before WWII just took over again once the dust settled. The people making the anime probably DON'T think there's any possible world better than the status-quo.

I want to see an isekai where a talented illusionist (magician, not actual wizard) is chucked into a fantasy world with a sufficiently corrupt government, and the story follows their escapades as they go *full* phantom thief, using their incredible skills in practical effects and certain parts of the magic system to pull off seemingly impossible heists with style and panache. An important note for this to work is that the protagonist cannot have any cheat skill, and preferably doesn't even have access to the base magic system, instead forced to get by on trickery and what magic is possible without any mana.

The city police department, meanwhile, is made up entirely of every spin on the Lawful Good Paladin archetype that can be conceived, from ‘cool grizzled Dude who knows every loophole in the book but isn’t afraid to nut up when it comes time to Enforce The Law’ to ‘hateful rule monkey who will attempt to execute you for looking at them funny’. Plot progresses, graffiti nears completion despite Law Enforcement’s best efforts, it develops that Graffiti Wizard has turned to art as a coping method after a much more classical-draconian government burned their own home down, leading sympathetic Law Enforcers to cut down on effort and start rethinking things. Character development all around, series ends with the completion of graffiti, turns out its great big scary magic effect was enforcement of truth. In one building. The government building. And only there. Graffiti Wizard rides off into the sunset, leaving behind a changed town, and their FORMER magnum opus - already plotting their next way into the history books - and Law Enforcers end up taking over whole force/going into politics/retiring to become media personality/otherwise moving into more civically influential roles in their city, always remembering that strange, kooky person who just wanted everyone to be happy... and to be famous, because heck yeah, that’s awesome.

While watching the handshakes segment, I noticed that some of the characters heads just sort of seam photo shopped onto their bodies. Like when looking at their faces it looks like they will just fly right of their shoulders.

I started this show on episode 1, they introduced Tsukasa the heterochromic silver hair prime minister of Japan. I exit out of the window instantly. I ended up finishing the show, but it really hurt my soul the whole time...

I find it funny that your whole "you're ideologically incompatible but your wealth and connections are useful in the short term so you get to stay as long as you don't complain" is, to my understanding, basically exactly what happened with the zaibatsus after WW2

The Handshakers sequel Wis is the best anime of 2019 for me, because it gives me hope. Handshakers was one of the worst financial failures in anime history. It's definitive proof that literally any show in existence can be revived and given a second season.

Your dissection of the number one spot holder really spoke to me, especially the bit about wasted talent. Sometimes I would wonder why I’d get pissed off at some of the writing decisions made in competently produced shows like Akame Ga Kill, but then I’d turn around and praise Demon King Daimao, which is a jumbled up, difficult to follow narrative lasagna. But now I know how to communicate that. It’s because of wasted potential. Same goes for a lot of entertainment these days. Disney keeps dropping the ball, despite all their resources. It truly is frustrating.
