When I started a bought 100 of the Dorco 301 blades. I assumed it was my novice wet shaving abilities but after a few weeks, I almost gave up. I decided to buy a sampler and my first shave with a different blade was 100 times better. I gave the rest of the Dorcos away as they may work for someone. Also, Voskhod are in my top three. It’s amazing how one blade is great for one and horrible for another.
The variety packs are a great idea! I will continue to experiment and test blades, I think it’s part of the fun. Tomorrow evening I will have my top 5 favorites. Thanks for watching Dan!
Dorco ST 301 was unable to start cutting my hair. It became visibly bent and got stuck. Why do they make them? Voshkhod is, in my opinion, the sharpest and smoothest blade in the world. I love it.
I try to tell myself maybe I got a bad one but how many out of a 100 should be acceptable as bad? I want to love the voskhod but they are a bit too tuggy for me. Thanks for watching!
I’m only a beginner wet shaver, but I would agree with the Dorco’s. I’ve been using Gillette blades and haven’t had any issues…tonight shaved with the Dorco and got nicked going across the grain on my chin. Blades felts a little rougher in passings. May try one more shave with them…if I have similar results then they’ll be hitting the sharps container lol
I just saw this. I was somewhat surprised by seeing the Voskhod blades on your list. I happen to agree. I have also sampled a lot of different blades and saw that Voskhods got a lot of love in the wet shaving community. Just goes to show you that the YMMV holds true. It was not smooth at all for me. Good to see I wasn't the only one.
I have went back to try them on several occasions thinking my technique improved or maybe I just got a bad one. Nope they just don’t work for me. Thanks for watching James!
All Dorco's, Super Max, Lord's, Shark Super Chrome and Gillette Silver Blue are horrible. I agree with you on the other blades too. Also, There is some other review on here with the " Sharpest Blade" test. He tested close to 2 dozen blades and he said Facon was the sharpest and Feather so-so 🤯. IMO..Permasharp, Personna lab blues and Astra SP are the best.
About the time you made this video the quality control of the Voskhod blades had tanked. They use to be a nice balance of sharp & smoothness but I remember buying my last100 pack a couple of years ago and every second or third blade was rough & tuggy. Even corking didn't seem to fix them. But as of 2024 my faulty five are All Derby, Vietnam Dorco 300/301, All Treets except the Black Beauties, all Samah, and the worst value for the money goes to Timor. 10 times the price of a 100 Dorco pack but just as bad. Actaully I have a sixth blade but it is so bad it is in a class by itself. Unshaveable at any exposure the worst blade at any price goes to... wait for it.... Tiger carbon steel.
I’ve had a few good shaves with voshkod blades but last few were so rough I stopped the shave and swapped them out. I wanted to love them but I’ll pass.
I second your thoughts on Voskhod. I just can’t get them to work for me either. I think Ladas and Rapira Plat Lux are the better blades from that manufacturer
Eyyy Matthew! Interesting video on these blades. My worst blades that I didn't like were Merkur and Derby blades. Happy Thanksgiving Weekend my brother!
A lot of those blades I’ve never heard of. My worst blades are Merkur and Timor blades. They’ve always been dull and tuggy. Voskhods work just fine for me, little on the mild side but not horrible. Great video sir!
I’ll agree with you on all the blades you listed except for the Voskhods. Voskhods work great for me in more aggressive razors, specifically my Parker Variant and RR Gamechanger .84 Jaws. They’re too dull for me in any mild-medium razor (Merkur 34C/HD, Jagger DE89, Muhle R89-range) I own though. The least favorite blades I’ve tried have been Derby Extras, Dorco,SUPERMAX, Shark, Bic, Merkur & Muhle Blades. My favorite blade varies per razor, not all of them work great with the same blade, but they all shave great with the right blade.
@@lawrence1md That’s a bummer, but I guess that’s why there’s all kinds of different blades. There are definitely people on RU-vid here I’ve seen get excellent shaves with the brands that I listed above, along with many other brands I don’t care for, various Personna blades being another stand-out. I think it’s a matter of how serious a person’s hair is. I have pretty thick beard growth, so I need a Feather for a close shave in a mild-medium razor, in a mid-aggression razor I use Nacets and an aggressive razor I use Astra SS, Gillette 7:00 Yellow or Treet Platinum Stainless in super-aggressive razors. Cheers!
@@lawrence1md That has been my experience with the Gillette 7:00 blades too, although I haven’t tried the Green 7:00 Super Stainless yet, anything of the Gillette Perma-Sharp blades are too dull for me also.
What's interesting is I remember enjoying the dorco red label blades, yes they're not sharp as others I guess I was New to wet shaving at the time and found them to be a good training blade, I need to buy a tuck and revisit them.. I have enjoyed blades others do not like such as Lord, shark, dorco and Derby. But I have liked the one or two voshkod I had.. Mild blades though, not aggressive..
I have the Voskhod with no coating and they seem to work pretty good. Probably in my top 5 of blades. Maybe the coated ones are different. In my experience there are blades I love and ones I hate made by the same company.
@@lawrence1md just like the wrapper of the blade you showed except blank where yours had the name of the coating. My just has the pattern in that area.
Thanks for taking the bullet for those "worst" blades - Now I don't have to try any of them. OTOH, The Voskhods are among my top favorite blades ... BUT they only work really well in select vintage razors - most notably: Gillette old Type, most Techs, 40's Super Speed, Slim Adjustable, and Super Adjustable. Also (don't take this the wrong way) ... try raising your camera a little, and shooting down on your face a little - it'll make your head look less pointy.
Hmm. Personally, I've had decent results with both Dorco and Vokshod blades. I've gotten a week's worth of use with a Vokshod, about 21 passes. With Dorco, about the same. I'd never heard of those other three brands. My emphasis is to use a hot washcloth, a pre-shave, an excellent lather, lathering up after each psss, and using a high quality balm afterwards.
You might want to avoid making too much of the printing on individual blades, my Kai blades have no printing on them and my Personna Blues looks as if someone forgot to refill the ink bottle. I don't have any 'worst' blades since I buy based on recommendations plus I never buy razor blades that have the word 'max' in the name.
Voskhod Blades are AWESOME...dude you got some Amazon Ebay fakes is my guess. buy some from a real shave supply is my guess west coast /razorock had a killer sale and i bought like 500 for a steal!!!! they may not be the sharpest but they are SMOOTH and get better after the first shave as well I feel that way about Gillette platinum...pull and tug for me so...who knows right lol (maybe i got fakes too )
I wish I had some that worked for me. I’ve bought some straight from Russia, Italian barber and even PAA. I have had viewers send me some that the swear are good ones. All failed me, I really wanted to love them. Thanks for watching!
YMMV. Voskhod's are not particularly sharp. They are renowned for being smooth. If you strop a teflon coated blade, then you will end up with an uncoated edge. I don't think that would improve them. Some people say that there are QC problems with Voskhod's such that each box of 100 will have some bad blades in them. Others say that they have not had that experience. You appear to favor sharp blades. Voskhod's may not be for you in any case. Probably best to try them out in your most efficient razors. They should tame a highly efficient razor.
I have to agree I personally found Voskhod to be rubbish I have tried a few and I find they pull and tug and I just cannot get on with them at all. I just find it hard to believe so many people rate them. Keep well and keep safe.
@@lawrence1md also I was thinking about trying euromax blades but after watching your review no need to waste my money. I did just recently by Lords and they are pretty good
Cool video, bro! ST-301's, while mediocre are still much better than the ST-300's. Those blades are complete garbage. 301's actually worked well enough for me in my aggressive iKon Tech razor.
The blade that has no name , that shouldn't be name because it was so terrible 😅😂🤣 Sometimes I wonder about that quality control person. It must have been on a Monday when those nameless blades where made. Well done Matthew thank you for the set and a video will be up in a few days. Smooth shaves to you.
This is a video leading up to my favorite blades video : ) sometimes I wonder how ink or paper really impacts cost on products. I look forward to seeing your video and hope the set worked out well for ya. Thanks for watching Jeffrey !
@@lawrence1md I was having a lot of fun watching the video ... thinking back to some of the shaves I have had with "blades" that are what nightmares are made of. I have been lucky that most of the blades that didn't work out for me wasn't on video. It should be a good series of videos. 🌞
Why not do some research and buy the best 5? Why would you buy blades from the Dollar Tree? Why wouldn’t you buy blades from a reputable online shaving supplier and buy their top selling blades? You are nuts bro.
I thought this would be fun, because I’ve never seen a list of bad blades. This could help people find blades the are better and I wanted to get some people fired up. Hehehehehe. Thanks for watching!
