What is your favorite frog to keep as a pet? Do you think some frogs make better pet amphibians than others for beginner frog keepers? These 5 worst amphibians actually have better options and here they are. The Purple frog for example, from India is an amazing looking species but they hide so often, are so hard to find and overall do not make the best cold blooded pets. A white's tree frog on the other hand is much easier to keep, easier to find and cheaper too. Dumpy Tree Frogs make excellent pet frogs! Malayan Horned frogs or sometimes called leaf frogs are maybe the coolest frog on the planet but these big toad looking frogs do not make the best pets for beginner amphibian keepers for many reasons. A better and more common option might be Pacman frogs. These colourful amphibians come in many morphs and colors but are much easier to keep! Indian Bullfrogs have the most amazing vocal sac color and their frog call is absolutely beautiful. However, these bullfrogs likely will be hard to find, hard to breed in captivity and overall a better option might be the African Bullfrog. Pixie frogs make amazing captives and their massive size and appetite is absolutely amazing and so fun to keep as a pet. Vietnamese Mossy Frogs also make cool looking frogs byt are very shy. Looking for a crazy looking frog that is out and about? Try an Amazon Milk Frog! These medium sized hoppy bois are so cool and look like Panda Bears! Hairy Frogs, or often called Horror Frogs are insane! These guys break bones, grow hair looking skin and really, aren't great pets. Spanish ribbed newts maybe the best option here.

I love to show my red eyed tree frogs to people just because they seem like they really shouldnt exist. (theres a video idea!) They can destroy their eyes just by eating too large meals. What a peculiar evolutionary dead end. Easy to care, when grown up. Absolute nightmare to search for tiniest crickets every day when they are really young. Where was I going with this...? Youre welcome.

So my conclusion, it depends on the pacman frog and where you purchase it from/raised. The more isolated from people growing up the more defensive they're going to be towards us :) if yours ends up aggressive dont worry just be patient and in a year or two it can grow to trust you with the right care :)

I had one that I occasionally took to my job as a high school biology teacher. Most the kids didn't even want to touch him so that wasn't a problem, but if I had him sitting in the middle of a table with everyone gathered around to observe him eating or whatever, he would hear the sound of my voice wherever I was standing, turn to face me, and leap onto me. Every. Dang. Time.

Also a good tip for beginners. Dont get a baby, get an subadult or adult frog. You cant really treat parasites on frogs, so when you get a baby thats full of worms cause the breeder doesn keep an eye on it it will probably die. If the breeder or store managed to raise it to a certain size, its a good sign that the animal is healthy and the seller knows what he/she is doing.

I've got several of these animals: I own a breeding pair of Vietnamese Mossy frogs (Theloderma corticale). I don't yet have amazon milk frogs, but they are on my list. I find the mossy frogs to be generally quite cryptic, they stay hidden most of the time unless stressed or feeding. They don't seem to rely on their camouflage that much, preferring to stay in the water and just cling to plants and wood. They do go through more gregarious periods, but generally, their flightiness takes over. That being said, I also now have over 20 tadpoles from them with more on the way. They are prolific breeders. White's tree frogs are great, but best if you have a red night light to watch them hunt when they are awake. I've got three and they are fantastic pets that require almost no maintenance outside of feeding and scrubbing shed skin off of the glass. Bioactive enclosures make it so the poop just sort of disappears mostly. Spanish ribbed newts are awesome too. I own 10 of them in my breeding colony, and they are by far the easiest aquatic animal I've ever owned. Extremely hardy, very robust, "playful", amorous and inquisitive, often coming to the glass of the tank to investigate me when I walk in the room. Probably expecting food, but not always as those same inquisitive newts will sometimes ignore the food in favour of staring at me and following me around. I've got a pixie frog, and while I agree that feeding one is certainly a fun thing to do, I'll also add that they are the only amphibian I've encountered that you can actually build an owner-pet relationship. Something nearly on par with a cat or dog. Indeed I think if you can figure out the right incentive and strategy, they might even be smart enough to be trained to do simple tricks (trying to come up with a method now, just to see). Mine has proven to be an avid problem solver (gradually weakening the lid on his tub of a course of a couple months till the screen came loose so he could escape), and discerning eater, often conveying displeasure when I try to feed him food other than superworms. He knows not to bite me, but treats others as dangerous or hostile. He willingly comes and sits in my presence when I give him free roaming time (which I highly recommend, so long as the floor or environment is free of toxic chemicals). I try not to read into things too much, but I am almost certain that the inner life of a Pixie is a tad more complex than a lot of other amphibians.

Great recommendations! As someone who has kept horned frogs, White's and milk frogs, you pretty much hit the mark. One species I was disappointed not to see was fire-bellied toads. Also very active during the day, which is rewarding for beginners in the hobby.

For beginners, all amphibians that require either a lot of climbing space or a filtered water feature that isnt a water ball is probably not that great. Thats why a lot of toads are just great! I think most of them dont climb that much and water bowl is almost always good enough. Plus they are very easy to feed (biggest problem is overfeeding them). Add to that the price for them which is usually quite low and the price of their enclosure (which can be very very cheap for toads that require no additional heating). Great video as always btw

I might be a bit weird in this regard, but I LOVE the idea of having a bunch of animals with extreme cameoflage. I love images of things like moss on rocks, so the idea of that image coming to life, or slightly changing because apparently it's actually an animal.... That's AMAZING to me.

As a frog fan from nearly birth I can say that these are some great recommendations for beginners, I have two whites tree frogs and they’re so great, I hope to soon get a milk frog and maybe a bio active setup going for some dart frogs but I can hands down say all the recommended frogs are great I had a pacman when I was 8 that got so big we could feed them pinkies for its birthday and Christmas 🤣 loved that dude! Update: got another Pac-Man cause there was a big chonky one at petco they were selling at 50% off and I got em at gave em a nice pretty home right next to the whites which is now bio active🤙

The spanish rib newt, or, as we call it here in Spain, the "gallipato", is an endangered species that is being recovered in its natural habitats thanks to programs of breeding and releasing. I had no idea they were kept as pets across the pond! I thought that they were overlooked, which would be sad, because they are REALLY cool!

I read about the Hairy Frog years ago. I guess one of its common names where it comes from translates to "the frog that will scratch you like a cat". They grow hair, too. I'm gonna start calling them Cat Frogs. I wanted a Pacman Frog, and I'm probably going to get one eventually, but I'm completely captivated by the idea of an African Bullfrog now. Reading up on them here, they sound like a dream. I'm not the only one who has dreams about being friends with giant frogs, right?
