Top 50 Songs Closest to Qualifying (2004-2022) / Eurovision 

Just a question, isnt it the top 5 who qualifies? Then how can a 10th in semifinal not qualify?

@@linneawickander350 This is actually a system specific to 2008 and 2009. The semi finals voting was entirely televoting, where they'd pick 9 of the 10 qualifiers, but they'd also have a set of juries who would pick a 10th wildcard out of the remaining songs which in practice ranged between the songs that came 10th-13th in the semifinal.

Maybe one year we will have the 10th finalist with same amount of points like 11th one. For example 10. Georgia 107 (Georgia qualified because of higer Televoting points) 11. Denmark 107 But it is statistically almost impossible...

@@dora01abale I was thinking about the same thing happening. Another tie break situation, where someone with a higher televote would advance. Would even more bizarre, if the advancing song was 11th with the juries and the public, while the other one was 9th or 10th with the juries, but only 12th with the televote.

Denmark was actually close to losing a tie breaker in 2019. It seems that the Italian televote in semi 2 was incorrect. Had that mistake not occured Lithuania would've gotten one point from them and tied Denmark. Since Lithuania got more televotes that year they would've won the tie-breaker.

I *guess*, but usually when a voting error regards individual juries and they can still register a jury result, it’s not changed. For example, if it weren’t for a Swedish juror, Austria would’ve come last overall

thats what happened with Lithuania in the other semi but for another country I forgot, but Im kinda glad they didnt qualify cuz I love Denmark's entry

Yes, Croatia and North Macedonia were 20+ points behind song that qualified. Not surprising that they aren't here.

juries could choose a wildcard to the final back then, even if the televoters didn't agree.

In 2008 and 2009 there was something called the "jury wildcard". It basically means that the top 9 in the televote qualified to the final, and then the juries decided the final qualifier. This system was especially dumb in 2009 when the final had a 50/50 jury/televote but in the semis it was all televote with the juries only getting to pick one entry to qualify. If that year the semis also had 50/50 voting the entries from that year in this video likely would've been nowhere close to qualifying.

Yes, in 2008 & 2009, the voting of the semi was 100% televoting So, the top 9 of the televoting was qualified and the jury give a wildcard to one of the remaining songs (which really don't please at Many people, especially in North Macedonia as they were 10th in 2008 & 2009 but still got Eliminated both Times) The wildcard of the jury were disturbed to: - Poland 2008 (10th in semi) - Sweden 2008 (12th) (instead of North Macedonia)) - Finland 2009 (12th) (instead of North Macedonia) - Croatia 2009 (13th) (instead of Serbia) For info, if the same system was used in 2022, the qualifiers would have Been: - In The 1st semi : Albania instead of Iceland - In The 2nd semi : Cyprus instead of Azerbaijan (It would have Been last in The semi with 0 points) - The jury wildcard would have Been disturbed to Switzerland (second-to-last in televoting) & Belgium (10th in televoting)

In 2012 Norway and Bulgaria received exactly the same number of points (45) in semi final 2 and placed in joint 10th place. Only 10 countries can qualify to the final though, so the tie had to be broken. Under Eurovision rules the country which received votes from a larger amount of countries wins the tie break. In this case that was Norway who received points from 11 countries, as opposed to Bulgaria who got points from 10.
