Never really understood the hate unova gets for having ”copied” old pokemons. In my mind having an environment where say zubat doesn’t exist another similar species whould take its place. I mean thats how real niches work in ecosystems.

Gulpin is a stomach, it talks about that in its pokedex entry Eldegoss is probably based of a dandelion. It looks nothing like a cotton plant. Same goes with Jumpluff.

Jumpluff, Whimsicott, and Eldegoss are all based on different plants. The reason they look similar is because they all share the same method of seed dispersal. Only Whimsicott is based on cotton while Jumpluff and Eldegoss are base on other flowers being the dandelion and the gossypium.

Regarding the Muk clones, I actually think the gulpin and trubbish lines look fine. They are as gross as you’d expect them to be, whilst having some charm and having a different enough design to each other. If anything Grimer/muk are worse but it’s gen 1 so they get a pass

To be honest, I would quite like there to be a regional variant of Meowth in every region as it’s way to show how much Meowth has evolved throughout the generations through different regions basically making it the somewhat new Eeveelution.

IDK I personally like the idea of Meowth having a different form in every region. Not that there can't be other cats but the idea of Meowth being a sort of marker for other regions is interesting and gives the coin cat more personality with it's diverse cousins.

Huh, i know everyone has their opinions and i respect that but to me Turtonator was much of an upgrade to the fire turtle department since torkoal isn't crazy above in terms of Mons i'd like to use (Also if that helps make swalot better which i doubt it will, but its based on a stomach and stuff since its called swalot and eats stuff)

I don't think Jumpluff should be included with Whimsicott & Eldegoss, since Jumpluff is a dandelion, not cotton. (I know it's called the Cottonweed Pokemon, but Quagsire is the Water Fish Pokemon and I for one would not lump it in with other Fish Pokemon.) The rest of your point still stands. Also, I think it's fine that Meowth got two regional variants, namely for the reason that it lets fans know that if a Pokemon has already received a regional variant, it does not discount them from getting another in future generations. It doesn't mean Meowth needs a new regional form for each region, but honestly, I've seen a lot of great fanart for various regional Meowth, to the point that I wouldn't mind seeing a new one in every gen if they wanted. Meowth getting a regional variant AND a Gigantamax form in gen 8 might've been a bit much I'll admit. Also, also, Grimer is a good concept in Gen 1 and fits in with the other designs that introduced the world of Pokemon, but it literally just becomes a bigger Grimer when it evolves. I don't want to be too harsh, but it's about as bland of an evolution as Diglett to Dugtrio, but less interesting. Alola did it much more justice.

I agree for the most part, but 1. I think the Swalot line is meant to be a stomach? Something like that 2. Jumpluff isn't based on the cotton plant, but the last stage of Dandelion (as indicated by its preevolutions)

I disagree with the whimsicott thing. Jumpluff draws from dandelion seeds and other seeds that are carried on the wind, and not cotton. Eldegoss is boring as anything though and does what whimsicott did worse.

I don't really get why it's bad to "copy" past ideas it makes the world seem more like our own, there are not only one dog breed in the canine family as an example. I get that people would want to see certain animals get the pokemon treatment, but i don't get why it's bad that concepts are repeated when there are plenty repeated concepts in our own world, cars comes to mind. Let me state why i think it's good to "re-invent the wheel" so to speak: It makes the world believeable: Our own world has plenty examples of this. It tells out a lot of the region: You can learn a lot from colors, designs and behavior. It breaks the mold: With them not all pokemon of one species seems the same. Same concept different animal/plant: This probably goes under the second reasson but no matter. Not all species are the same, monkeys, apes and humans would be a classic example. Yes i know there are quite a dew monkey pokemon, but my point still stands. I can see why people wouldn't want this though, it takes up already limited space and design/expectations plays a huge role, but i still think that it's good to have them.

I have actually liked that Meowth is getting these remixes in new Gens. It makes sense because cats can be pretty different in different spots all over the world.

Here in brazil we quite like Whinsicott due to it being based on a Brazilian folk story.

Contests and other non-battle things. Gen 3 had Contests, and I loved them. Gen 4 had Contest Spectacular, which had the weird dressup mechanic and voltage or whatever, which overcomplicated it. Gen 5 had... Musicals. Which had no mechanics to them, and no reward. Just make the sprites dance.

At this point, if we drop the meme and *DON'T* get a new Meowth every new game, I'm gonna riot as hard as I did back when they dropped the TM51 meme for Beheeyem

most overused Pokémon idea: Poison/Grass types in Gen I. In Gen I, there is not one, not two, but three, 3 stage Grass/Poison evolutionary lines. Bulbasaur, Bellsprout, and Oddish, were all part of a three stage evolution line. Sure Oddish's line got a split evolution, and Bulbasaur isn't just a plant, but look at the flower on Vileplume, then look at the flower on Venusaur, basically the same flower, and come on, 9 Grass/Poison types in one generation, do you know how many Grass types in Gen I weren't part Poison? 5, the Exeggcute line, the Paras line, and Tangela. Everyone talks about how there are so many Normal/Flying types, but did you know that in Gen I, Grass/Poison was the most common dual type combo, as Normal/Flying only had 8 members, while Grass/Poison had 9. And how is it that at one point pure Grass was a unique typing? Honestly Game Freak, couldn't you have given the pure Grass type to Bellsprout or something, to distinguish them?

Regarding Meowth, I actually think Meowth works well as a kind of "Universal Regional Variant", of sorts. Ya see, ya take a well known gen 1 pokemon, but one without much to its name, and change it to suit the region. Also, Trubbish > Grimer.

Yeah, I don‘t know why they had to make a few Galar-Meowth. The Alolan version was good enough. The shiny actually looks different AND has a good colour, and once you get used to Persian in big head-mode, that one is fine too.

I actually appreciate Trubbish and Garbodor because of what they represent: Koffing & Weezing are air pollution, Grimer & Muk are water pollution, Trubbish & Garbodor are land pollution. They are parallels of each other, but they cover all three types of pollution.

Even though most fighting types in Unova are man-like, they also gave us the Swords of Justice. The most animal looking fighters and the only quadrupeds for this typing

6- Pansear really was brought up in the wrong generation, but I'll probably be the one with the unpopular opinion and say that Darmanitan should have been the one pushed back to Gen 6 or rushed to Gen 4. Gen 5 had a bigger fire type pool, and the elemental monkey trio is a great early game memory. It's a little bit of a tangent but I think Darmanitan would have been the ideal ace Pokémon for Flint. 5 - Diggersby is a whole can of worms. For japanese people it's just a stereotype of a blue collar worker. The waist band, the messy beard. It's something you see in multiple other sources, like Boss in Hamtaro, or kinda like Gutsman in Megaman, just for an example. For western audiences, specially the portion that already had problematized Lopunny, it is a whole 'nother deal; it is specially hated because it at the same time validates a point about gender design and invalidates it at the same time just by existing. Both Pokémon can be of either gender and they went and stereotyped both genders contrary to the previous narrative. It could have been remembered as a mediocre design that is lost in translation or for being the only ground type that isn't a legendary in the region, but it's probably the most veiled piece of politics and specially identitary politics in Pokémon since Jynx. 4 - They more or less have the same core idea, but the reference is quite different. A lot of Pokémon are based on kaiju and yokai, right? I believe Muk is supposed to be based on Hedorah (from Godzilla, not unlike Raremon), while Swalot is supposed to be both the slime from Dragon Quest and 'The Blob'. Which is why Muk is more 'destructive' while Swalot is this kind of unsatiable thing. And speaking of rabbits, for Trubbish and Garbodor, I do believe the pointy teeth hanging out the mouth and the bag ears are kind of supposed to imply a "dust bunny" design, I think they should have leaned more into it. 3 - My gripe with fighting types is repetition. It is ok to have some kind of 'people' pokémon, as long as you're doing different fight styles. And for the most part we didn't get repeats. Crabominable not only looks terrible but it also repeats sumo from Hariyama. We have an absurd amount of grapplers and wrestlers (Grapploct, Hawlucha, Poliwrath, Toxicroak, Emboar, Bewear, and why we can even count Incineroar). I have a couple more issues with them, like Hawlucha or Grapploct not debuting the same region as Incineroar so we could have face and heel in the same region, or like secondary types, like again Grapploct or Crabrawler, but honestly, I think the ones I dislike the most are Falinx and Kubfu. Falinx is just Galarian Exeggute and you can't change my mind on how dumb it is. Kubfu design is so soulless, it's so generic and uninspired. The evolutions do a bit better but I don't get why they aren't just form changes, why do they need to be two different evolutions withing the same dex slot? Usually my response to the criticism of the type is just 'yeah, they just need to do it with more animals' but Kubfu really shoots it down. 2 - Hmmm... I'm pretty sure Jumpluff is supposed to be on a dandelion not cotton. Hence why it flies so easily. I 100% agree with Eldegoss though. My solution for it would actually to delete Eldegoss' line from the game and give Wooloo a split evolution. One can still be Dubwool, but I'd have the other one be a Normal/Grass type, and have it be a mix of both cotton and wool, and be based on a more domesticated kind of animal. I honestly think it would be a better fit for Milo's character as a farmer, specially when his gym's puzzle are all about handling Wooloo in the first place. 1 - I'm kind of ok with Meowth, but I'll say, with Raichu being my favorite pokémon, I'm upset that they chose Meowth to be the mascot for regional change instead. I'd take a fairy or fighting Raichu variant gladly. But then again they did want to push regional exclusive evolution, so I guess I see why they would pick another gen 1 thing to do that...

Unova is supposed to be like a soft reboot and I'm actually okay with these reused ideas.

Gulpin and swalot are not piles of sludge, they are actually based on stomachs and that is the reason they are so keen on eating. their poison type comes for gastric acid.

I think it'll be better for the three Unova monkeys to have different elements than the starter ones. They're all based on the three wise monkeys, I was thinking that maybe the fighting, psychic, and dark types might be fitting. See no evil monkey will be a dark type for an obvious reason. I was thinking that hear no evil money might be a psychic type, it can't talk so it communicates telepathically. while as the speak no evil will be a fighting type, since in some martial arts (like karate for example) have those short shouts when performing attacking moves.

I know we all have different opinions but there is only so many things you can do with the fighting type without just taking an animal and putting some boxing gloves on them we gotta give the devs some credit for the conklidurr evolution line its pretty cool in my opinion how as the Pokemon evolves he holds a stronger material its just a cool Pokemon line in general (also I think a platypus Pokemon would be a really bad Pokemon it would be like youngoose or sumthin super lame and forgettable)

I'd argue that the Skitty, Purugly, and _especially_ Liepard lines are retreads of Meowth every bit as much as the Regional Meowth Variants are.

I don't agree on your take on Fighting-types "being human". Yes, they're humanoid, but not human. Besides they do a good job with most others, like with Lucario just to mention one. Also you failed to see the connection with gen V fighting evolutionary line that was supposed to be sort of like a copy to Machop's, which is why they /had/ to be humanoid in the same sense. So it made, well, sense. The same with the others you mentioned from gen V, like Swoobat and Garbordor. Humanoid Pokémon are not the best, but they're fsr from being bad mons.

I have a suggestion for a video you could make. What Pokémon would live around you based on the animals and plants in your surroundings. For example, in the early summer there would be tons of buzzwole where I live as well as shaymin land form in the evenings and in the winter the forests would be full of snover and abomasnow… etc

How do you even design a platypus Pokemon? It's basically already a Pokemon since it's a strange mix of a beaver and a duck.

It's interesting how different some of your opinions are from mine. I love Diggersby. He's clearly supposed to be a cross between a rabbit and a construction worker / ditch digger, which I find to be a really cool motif. He's got like a muddy 5 o'clock shadow and a dirt vest. I feel like he should be wearing a hard hat or something. Normal/Ground is also pretty unique typing with great offensive coverage, which goes well with his Huge Power ability. He's also immune to Electric and Ghost, which is pretty nifty. I've always wanted to work him into a serious competitive team.

There's really only 2 cotton mons. Jumpluff is more of a Dandelion. But Eldegoss is definitely a "Why are you even here" pokemon, Cottonee and Whimsicott are in the same game and are like 1000 times more viable.

I guess the regional Meowth trend is here to stay. If they're trying to make Meowth as relevant as Pikachu (and I most definitely think that's the case) these regional Meowths of varying types will be a staple in coming generations, unless they remove the regional variant gimmick completely.

I feel like comparing Infernape to Darmanitan and Simesear is kind of a false equivalence since they draw from different inspirations. One is Sun Wukong, one’s a daruma doll and the others based on Hear,see and do no evil.

I think you’re overrating Muk. There’s a fine line between simplistic and lazy, and I think it leans pretty far into lazy. Garbodor is way better designed

I have two others but based on the starters - The fire-fighting type combo (Blaziken, Infernape, Emboar) - Quadrupes becoming bipedal, vice versa (Tepig-Emboar, Oshawott-Samurott, Fennekin-Delphox, Litten-Incineroar)

Gulpin and Swalot aren't just blobs, they specifically are based on the digestive system. Heck, Gulpin is in the exact shape of a stomach! The reason for the poison typing being the acids and possibly waste related to the digestive system.

I think it would be funny if each region got a new meowth variant. I can see why you find it annoying But I personally think a little trend would be pretty fun to see for meowth. Also yes. They should have made a lets go meowth because that would be hilarious but also pretty cool.

I never once saw Trubbish and Garboder as repeats of Grimer and Muk, and I never heard that connection drawn either. And even if they were, they are strict improvements in my eyes.

He doesn't take into account that most of these Pokémon don't exist in yhe same regions. That's why there are repeats, buddy.

I think the reson we have two regional forms for meowth is he'll be our sorta Pikachu clone. Since they probably aren't gonna give Pikachu that many new regional forms they picked the second Mascott to be a sorta "Hey remember me? I got my own gimmick now every new region is gonna have a brand new me Baby"

All we need is an Ice-type Meowth and then we would have covered all the types weak to the Fighting-type. And possibly even make a Fighting-type Meowth to be seen as the dominant of the species

I really like your videos, i trully do, but this one i felt was kinda bad. The fire monkeys and the "cotton" ones where the ones that i felt the worst takes. The fire monkey one is just bad because you just discard the entire idea behind the mons. Each one of them has a unique origin in asian mythology and unique traits that are shown through then, they aren't just "fire monkeys" they are their own thing. Same thing for Jumpluff, whimsicott and eldegoss, jumpluff itself being a dandelion, whimsicott having the whoke sheep/saci thing and making a pair with liligant, and eldegoss being more like a wild windflower with the seeds on it's back. I feel like a lot of pokemon are really simple and kinda boring in design and theme, but come on, if you're going to over simplify it why not say that dragonite, salamance and haxorus are copies for being just dragons when things like garchomp and hydreigon exist, wich are unique in style,moves,design,origin and etc? Because they are all good despite being just dragons. An example of lazyness in this case would be druddigon who is just boring, ugly and forgetable. I dunno if i expressed myself well but to sumarize: I dont think a single one of those pokemons are worse than the "original" (Except of course simisear and his boring design) And i think they have a lot in both design, lore and gameplay stats to be considered a copy or a repeated idea.

I cannot stress this enough. I'm genuinely confused how you could even think this? It's got "Duck" in the name, even in Japanese. There's no beaver tail. It's based on a rubber duck; it has waterfowl feet. Did someone out there spread this lie, or did so many people come to the wrong conclusion on their own...?

Gulpin and swallot are actually trash bags as well. The feather and whiskers are the tie and laces of certain trash bags respectively. Gulping and swallot are a more refined version of grimmer and muk, and the trubish line is a more obvious version of the gulpin one, while adding the dust bunny concept. Grimmer and Muk are just generic poisonous sludge, the two successor lines are way better executed.
